Recurrence in three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic plasma

We report on a numerical observation of recurrence phenomenon in a three dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) plasma for certain classes of initial flow profiles. Our simulations discover such a behaviour for an initial Taylor-Green (TG) type of flow whereas under identical conditions an initial Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flow fails to show recurrent behaviour. This difference in the dynamical behaviours is traced to the nature of the Rayleigh quotient in each case. The Rayleigh quotient which is an approximate measure of the number of active degrees of freedom in a dynamical system is found to remain small and bounded in time for the TG flow but grows indefinitely in time for the ABC flow. An estimate of the effective degrees of freedom for the TG flow case is provided and its practical implications for the nonlinear behaviour of the continuum nonlinear MHD plasma system is discussed.

Collective dynamics of globally delay-coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators

The effect of time-delayed coupling on the collective behavior of a population of globally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau (GCCGL) oscillators is investigated. A detailed numerical study is carried out to study the impact of time delay on various collective states that include synchronous states, multicluster states, chaos, amplitude mediated chimeras and incoherent states. It is found that time delay can bring about significant changes in the dynamical properties of these states including their regions of existence and stability. In general, an increase in time delay is seen to lower the threshold value of the coupling strength for the occurrence of such states and to shift the existence domain towards more negative values of the linear dispersion parameter. Further insights into the numerical findings are provided, wherever possible, by exact equilibrium and stability analysis of these states in the presence of time delay.

Two-photon decay of P-wave positronium: a tutorial

A detailed exposition of two-photon decays of P-wave positronium is given to fill an existing gap in the pedagogical literature. Annihilation decay rates of P-wave positronium are negligible compared to the rates of radiative electric dipole transitions to the ground state. This circumstance makes such decays experimentally inaccessible. However the situation is different for quarkonium and the experimental and theoretical research of two-photon and two-gluon decays of P-wave quarkonia is a still flourishing field.

Spatial symmetry breaking in single-frequency CCP discharge with transverse magnetic field

An independent control of the flux and energy of ions impacting on an object immersed in a plasma is often desirable for many industrial processes such as microelectronics manufacturing. We demonstrate that a simultaneous control of these quantities is possible by a suitable choice of a static magnetic field applied parallel to the plane electrodes in a standard single frequency capacitively coupled plasma device. Our particle-in-cell simulations show a 60% reduction in the sheath width (that improves control of ion energy) and a four fold increase in the ion flux at the electrode as a consequence of the altered ion and electron dynamics due to the ambient magnetic field. A detailed analysis of the particle dynamics is presented and the optimized operating parameters of the device are discussed. The present technique offers a simple and attractive alternative to conventional dual frequency based devices that often suffer from undesirable limitations arising from frequency coupling and electromagnetic effects.

Plasma density and ion energy control via driving frequency and applied voltage in a low pressure capacitively coupled plasma discharge

The dynamical characteristics of a single frequency low pressure capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) device under varying applied RF voltages and driving frequencies are studied using particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations. An operational regime is identified where for a given voltage the plasma density is found to remain constant over a range of driving frequencies and to then increase rapidly as a function of the driving frequency. The threshold frequency for this mode transition as well as the value of the constant density is found to increase with an increase in the applied voltage. Over the constant density range, for a given voltage, the sheath width is seen to increase as a function of the increasing driving frequency, thereby changing the ion energy without affecting the ion density. Our parametric study thus indicates that the twin knobs of the applied voltage and driving frequency offer a means of independently controlling the density and the ion energy in a low pressure CCP device that may be usefully exploited for plasma processing applications.

Effect of time varying transmission rates on coupled dynamics of epidemic and awareness over multiplex network

In the present work, a non-linear stochastic model is presented to study the effect of time variation of transmission rates on the co-evolution of epidemics and its corresponding awareness over a two layered multiplex network. In this model, the infection transmission rate of a given node in the epidemic layer depends upon its awareness probability in the awareness layer. Similarly, the infection information transmission rate of a node in the awareness layer depends upon its infection probability in the epidemic layer. The spread of disease resulting from physical contacts is described in terms of SIS (Susceptible Infected Susceptible) process over the epidemic layer and the spread of information about the disease outbreak is described in terms of UAU (Unaware Aware Unaware) process over the virtual interaction mediated awareness layer. The time variation of the transmission rates and the resulting co-evolution of these mutually competing processes is studied in terms of a network topology depend parameter(α). Using a second order linear theory it has been shown that in the continuous time limit, the co-evolution of these processes can be described in terms of damped and driven harmonic oscillator equations. From the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation, it is shown that for the suitable choice of parameter(α), the two process can either exhibit sustained oscillatory or damped dynamics. The damped dynamics corresponds to the endemic state. Further, for the case of endemic state it is shown that the inclusion of awareness layer significantly lowers the disease transmission rate and reduces the size of epidemic. The endemic state infection probability of a given node corresponding to the damped dynamics is found to have dependence upon both the transmission rates as well as on both absolute intra-layer and relative inter-layer degree of the individual nodes.

Amplitude Mediated Chimera States with Active and Inactive Oscillators

The emergence and nature of amplitude mediated chimera states, spatio-temporal patterns of co-existing coherent and incoherent regions, are investigated for a globally coupled system of active and inactive Ginzburg-Landau oscillators. The existence domain of such states is found to shrink and shift in parametric space as the fraction of inactive oscillators is increased. The role of inactive oscillators is found to be two fold - they get activated to form a separate region of coherent oscillations and in addition decrease the common collective frequency of the coherent regions by their presence. The dynamical origin of these effects is delineated through a detailed bifurcation analysis of a reduced model equation that is based on a mean field approximation. Our results may have practical implications for the robustness of such states in biological or physical systems where age related deterioration in the functionality of components can occur.

Visco-resistive MHD study of internal kink(m=1) modes

We have investigated the effect of sheared equilibrium flows on the $m = 1, n = 1$ resistive internal kink mode in the framework of a reduced magnetohydrodynamic model in a periodic cylindrical geometry. Our numerical studies show that there is a significant change of the scaling dependence of the mode growth rate on the Lundquist number in the presence of axial flows compared to the no flow case. Poloidal flows do not influence the scaling. We have further found that viscosity strongly modifies the effect of flows on the (1,1) mode both in the linear and nonlinear regime. Axial flows increase the linear growth rate for low viscosity values, but they decrease the linear growth rate for higher viscosity values. In the case of poloidal flows the linear growth rate decreases in all cases. Additionally at higher viscosity, we have found strong symmetry breaking in the behaviour of linear growth rates and in the nonlinear saturation levels of the modes as a function of the helicities of the flows. For axial, poloidal and most helical flow cases, there is flow induced stabilisation of the nonlinear saturation level in the high viscosity regime and destabilisation in the low viscosity regime.

Dynamics of compressional Mach cones in a strongly coupled complex plasma

Using a Generalised-Hydrodynamic (GH) fluid model we study the influence of strong coupling induced modification of the fluid compressibility on the dynamics of compressional Mach cones in a dusty plasma medium. A significant structural change of lateral wakes for a given Mach number and Epstein drag force is found in the strongly coupled regime. With the increase of fluid compressibility, the peak amplitude of the normalised perturbed dust density first increases and then decreases monotonically after reaching its maximum value. It is also noticed that the opening angle of the cone structure decreases with the increase of the compressibility of the medium and the arm of the Mach cone breaks up into small structures in the velocity vector profile when the coupling between the dust particles increases.

Wakes and precursor soliton excitations by a moving charged object in a plasma

We study the evolution of nonlinear ion acoustic wave excitations due to a moving charged source in a plasma. Our numerical investigations of the full set of cold fluid equations goes beyond the usual weak nonlinearity approximation and shows the existence of a rich variety of solutions including wakes, precursor solitons and pinned solitons that travel with the source velocity. These solutions represent a large amplitude generalization of solutions obtained in the past for the forced Korteweg deVries equation and can find useful applications in a variety of situations in the laboratory and in space wherever there is a large relative velocity between the plasma and a charged object.

Comment on "Spin-Gradient-Driven Light Amplification in a Quantum Plasma"

A comment on the Letter by S. Braun, F. A. Asenjo and S. M. Mahajan, Phys. Rev. Lett., 109, 175003 (2012). We show that recent arguments for light amplification driven by inhomogeneous quantum spin fields in low temperature electron plasmas in metals are invalid. In essence, a neglect of Pauli `blocking' led the authors to over-estimate the effects of intrinsic spin.

A KdV-like advection-dispersion equation with some remarkable properties

We discuss a new non-linear PDE, u_t + (2 u_xx/u) u_x = epsilon u_xxx, invariant under scaling of dependent variable and referred to here as SIdV. It is one of the simplest such translation and space-time reflection-symmetric first order advection-dispersion equations. This PDE (with dispersion coefficient unity) was discovered in a genetic programming search for equations sharing the KdV solitary wave solution. It provides a bridge between non-linear advection, diffusion and dispersion. Special cases include the mKdV and linear dispersive equations. We identify two conservation laws, though initial investigations indicate that SIdV does not follow from a polynomial Lagrangian of the KdV sort. Nevertheless, it possesses solitary and periodic travelling waves. Moreover, numerical simulations reveal recurrence properties usually associated with integrable systems. KdV and SIdV are the simplest in an infinite dimensional family of equations sharing the KdV solitary wave. SIdV and its generalizations may serve as a testing ground for numerical and analytical techniques and be a rich source for further explorations.

A critique of recent semi-classical spin-half quantum plasma theories

Certain recent semi-classical theories of spin-half quantum plasmas are examined with regard to their internal consistency, physical applicability and relevance to fusion, astrophysical and condensed matter plasmas. It is shown that the derivations and some of the results obtained in these theories are internally inconsistent and contradict well-established principles of quantum and statistical mechanics, especially in their treatment of fermions and spin. Claims of large semi-classical effects of spin magnetic moments that could dominate the plasma dynamics are found to be invalid both for single-particles and collectively. Larmor moments dominate at high temperature while spin moments cancel due to Pauli blocking at low temperatures. Explicit numerical estimates from a variety of plasmas are provided to demonstrate that spin effects are indeed much smaller than many neglected classical effects. The analysis presented suggests that the aforementioned `Spin Quantum Hydrodynamic' theories are not relevant to conventional laboratory or astrophysical plasmas.

Microscopic Origin of Shear Relaxation in Strongly Coupled Yukawa Liquids

We report accurate molecular dynamics calculations of the shear stress relaxation in a two-dimensional strongly coupled Yukawa liquid over a wide range of the Coulomb coupling strength $Γ$ and the Debye screening parameter $κ$. Our data on the relaxation times of the ideal- , excess- and total shear stress auto-correlation ($τ^{id}_M, τ^{ex}_M, τ_M$ respectively) along with the lifetime of local atomic connectivity $τ_{LC}$ leads us to the following important observation. Below a certain crossover $Γ_c(κ)$, $τ_{LC} \rightarrow τ^{ex}_M$, directly implying that here $τ_{LC}$ is the microscopic origin of the relaxation of excess shear stress unlike the case for ordinary liquids where it is the origin of the relaxation of the total shear stress. At $Γ>> Γ_c(κ)$ i.e. in the potential energy dominated regime, $τ^{ex}_M\rightarrow τ_M$ meaning that $τ^{ex}_M$ can fully account for the elastic or "solid like" behavior.

Time delay enhanced synchronization in a star network of second order Kuramoto oscillators

We examine the onset of synchronization transition in a star network of Kuramoto phase oscillators in the presence of inertia and a time delay in the coupling. A direct correlation between the natural frequencies of the oscillators and their degrees is assumed. The presence of time delay is seen to enhance the onset of first order synchronization. The star network also exhibits different synchronization transitions depending on the value of time delay. An analytical prediction to observe the effect of the time delay is provided and further supported by simulation results. Our findings may help provide valuable insights into the understanding of mechanisms that lead to synchronization on complex networks.

Chimera states: The Existence Criteria Revisited

Chimera states, representing a spontaneous break-up of a population of identical oscillators that are identically coupled, into sub-populations displaying synchronized and desynchronized behavior, have traditionally been found to exist in weakly coupled systems and with some form of nonlocal coupling between the oscillators. Here we show that neither the weak-coupling approximation nor nonlocal coupling are essential conditions for their existence. We obtain for the first time amplitude-mediated chimera states in a system of globally coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators. We delineate the dynamical origins for the formation of such states from a bifurcation analysis of a reduced model equation and also discuss the practical implications of our discovery of this broader class of chimera states.

Experimental observation of extreme multistability in an electronic system of two coupled Rössler oscillators

We report the first experimental observation of extreme multistability in a controlled laboratory investigation. Extreme multistability arises when infinitely many attractors coexist for the same set of system parameters. The behavior was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds, supported by numerical studies of models of two coupled identical or nearly identical systems. We construct and couple two analog circuits based on a modified coupled Rössler system and demonstrate the occurrence of extreme multistability through a controlled switching to different attractor states purely through a change in initial conditions for a fixed set of system parameters. Numerical studies of the coupled model equations are in agreement with our experimental findings.

Diverse routes of transition from amplitude to oscillation death in coupled oscillators under additional repulsive link

We report the existence of diverse routes of transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) in three different diffusively coupled systems, those are perturbed by a symmetry break- ing repulsive coupling link. For limit cycle systems the transition is through a pitchfork bifurcation (PB) as has been noted before, but in chaotic systems it can be through a saddle-node or a trans- critical bifurcation depending on the nature of the underlying dynamics of the individual systems. The diversity of the routes and their dependence on the complex dynamics of the coupled systems not only broadens our understanding of this important phenomenon but can lead to potentially new practical applications.
