Bayesian Optimization -- Multi-Armed Bandit Problem

In this report, we survey Bayesian Optimization methods focussed on the Multi-Armed Bandit Problem. We take the help of the paper "Portfolio Allocation for Bayesian Optimization". We report a small literature survey on the acquisition functions and the types of portfolio strategies used in papers discussing Bayesian Optimization. We also replicate the experiments and report our findings and compare them to the results in the paper. A Novel Multimodal Music Genre Classifier using Hierarchical Attention and Convolutional Neural Network

Music genre classification is one of the trending topics in regards to the current Music Information Retrieval (MIR) Research. Since, the dependency of genre is not only limited to the audio profile, we also make use of textual content provided as lyrics of the corresponding song. We implemented a CNN based feature extractor for spectrograms in order to incorporate the acoustic features and a Hierarchical Attention Network based feature extractor for lyrics. We then go on to classify the music track based upon the resulting fused feature vector.

Identification of Cervical Pathology using Adversarial Neural Networks

Various screening and diagnostic methods have led to a large reduction of cervical cancer death rates in developed countries. However, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women in India and other low and middle income countries (LMICs) especially among the urban poor and slum dwellers. Several sophisticated techniques such as cytology tests, HPV tests etc. have been widely used for screening of cervical cancer. These tests are inherently time consuming. In this paper, we propose a convolutional autoencoder based framework, having an architecture similar to SegNet which is trained in an adversarial fashion for classifying images of the cervix acquired using a colposcope. We validate performance on the Intel-Mobile ODT cervical image classification dataset. The proposed method outperforms the standard technique of fine-tuning convolutional neural networks pre-trained on ImageNet database with an average accuracy of 73.75%.

KarNet: An Efficient Boolean Function Simplifier

Many approaches such as Quine-McCluskey algorithm, Karnaugh map solving, Petrick's method and McBoole's method have been devised to simplify Boolean expressions in order to optimize hardware implementation of digital circuits. However, the algorithmic implementations of these methods are hard-coded and also their computation time is proportional to the number of minterms involved in the expression. In this paper, we propose KarNet, where the ability of Convolutional Neural Networks to model relationships between various cell locations and values by capturing spatial dependencies is exploited to solve Karnaugh maps. In order to do so, a Karnaugh map is represented as an image signal, where each cell is considered as a pixel. Experimental results show that the computation time of KarNet is independent of the number of minterms and is of the order of one-hundredth to one-tenth that of the rule-based methods. KarNet being a learned system is found to achieve nearly a hundred percent accuracy, precision, and recall. We train KarNet to solve four variable Karnaugh maps and also show that a similar method can be applied on Karnaugh maps with more variables. Finally, we show a way to build a fully accurate and computationally fast system using KarNet.
