S-matrices in the holomorphic modular bootstrap approach

We numerically determine the S-matrix by using connection formulae in the modular linear differential equation (MLDE) approach to the holomorphic modular bootstrap. We then determine exact formulae using the fact that entries in the $S$-matrix are integer entries in a cyclotomic extension of the field of rational numbers. This provides a method that is intrinsic to the MLDE setup and does not require inputs outside this framework. The method is illustrated with a selection of examples.

Elliptic curves in game theory

We investigate Spohn curves, the algebro-geometric models of totally mixed dependency equilibria for $2 \times 2$ normal-form games. These curves arise as the intersection of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and are generically elliptic curves. We examine the reduction of Spohn curves to plane curves, providing a full classification of conditions under which they are reducible. Notably, we prove that the real points are dense on the Spohn curve in all cases, which is relevant for applications. These computations are further supported by Macaulay2 and stored in Mathrepo. We review methods to compute the $j$-invariants of elliptic curves arising as the intersection of quadrics in $\mathbb P^3$ which we apply to the case of Spohn curves aimed at game theorists. We propose a definition of equivalence of generic $2\times 2$ games based on the $j$-invariant of the Spohn curve.

Notes on Characterizations of 2d Rational SCFTs: Algebraicity, Mirror Symmetry and Complex Multiplication

These notes combine results from two papers by the present authors viz., Part I (arXiv:2205.10299) and Part II (arXiv:2212.13028) into one streamlined version for better readability, along with a review on theory of complex multiplication for non-singular complex projective varieties and complex tori that is aimed at string theorists. We think that it is worth posting this edition as a separate entry in arXiv for those reasons, although this edition contains no essential progress beyond Part I and Part II. S. Gukov and C. Vafa proposed a characterization of rational N=(1,1) superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on 1+1 dimensions with Ricci-flat Kahler target spaces in terms of the Hodge structure of the target space, extending an earlier observation by G. Moore. We refined this idea and obtained a conjectural statement on necessary and sufficient conditions for such SCFTs to be rational, which we indeed prove to be true in the case the target space is T^4. In the refined statement, the algebraicity of the geometric data of the target space turns out to be essential, and the Strominger--Yau--Zaslow fibration in the mirror correspondence also plays a vital role.

Octonionic Magical Supergravity, Niemeier Lattices, and Exceptional and Hilbert Modular Forms

We study the quantum degeneracies of BPS black holes of octonionic magical supergravity in five dimensions that is defined by the exceptional Jordan algebra. We define the quantum degeneracy purely number theoretically as the number of distinct states in the charge space with a given set of invariant labels of the discrete U-duality group. We argue that the quantum degeneracies of spherically symmetric stationary BPS black holes of octonionic magical supergravity in five dimensions are given by the Fourier coefficients of the modular forms of the exceptional group $E_{7(-25)}$. The charges of the black holes take values in the lattice defined by the exceptional Jordan algebra $J_3^{\mathbb{O}}(\mathcal{R})$ over integral octonions $\mathcal{R}$. The quantum degeneracies of charge states of rank one and rank two BPS black holes (zero area) are given by the Fourier coefficients of singular modular forms $E_4(Z)$ and $E_8(Z)=(E_4(Z))^2$ of $E_{7(-25)}(Z)$. The rank 3 (large) BPS black holes will be studied elsewhere. Following the work of N. Elkies and B. Gross on the embeddings of cubic rings $A$ into the exceptional Jordan algebra and their actions on the 24 dimensional orthogonal quadratic subspace of $J_3^{\mathbb{O}}(\mathcal{R})$, we show that the quantum degeneracies of rank one black holes described by such embeddings are given by the Fourier coefficients of the Hilbert modular forms of $SL(2,A)$. If the discriminant of the cubic ring $A$ is $D=p^2$ with $p$ a prime number then the isotropic lines in the 24 dimensional quadratic space define a pair of Niemeier lattices which can be taken as charge lattices of some BPS black holes. For $p=7$ they are the Leech lattice with no roots and the lattice $A_6^4$ with 168 root vectors. We also review the current status of the searches for the M/superstring theoretic origins of the octonionic magical supergravity.

Generalized Narain Theories Decoded: Discussions on Eisenstein series, Characteristics, Orbifolds, Discriminants and Ensembles in any Dimension

We study a class of newly-introduced CFTs associated with even quadratic forms of general signature, which we call generalized Narain theories. We first summarize the properties of these theories. We then consider orbifolds of these theories, thereby obtaining a large class of non-supersymmetric CFTs with exactly marginal deformations. We then discuss ensemble averages of such theories over their moduli space, and obtain a modular form associated with the quadratic form and an element of the discriminant group. The modular form can be written as a Poincare series, which contains novel invariants of lens spaces and suggests the interpretation of the holographic bulk as a theory of anyons.

The gravitational path integral for $ N=4$ BPS black holes from black hole microstate counting

We use the exact degeneracy formula of single-centred $\frac14$ BPS dyonic black holes with unit torsion in 4D $N=4$ toroidally compactified heterotic string theory to improve on the existing formulation of the corresponding quantum entropy function obtained using supersymmetric localization. The result takes the form of a sum over Euclidean backgrounds including orbifolds of the Euclidean $AdS_2 \times S^2$ attractor geometry. Using an $N=2$ formalism, we determine the explicit form of the Abelian gauge potentials supporting these backgrounds. We further show how a rewriting of the degeneracy formula is amenable, at a semi-classical level, to a gravitational interpretation involving 2D Euclidean wormholes. This alternative picture is useful to elucidate different aspects of the gravitational path integral capturing the microstate degeneracies. We also comment on the relation between the associated 1D holographic models.

Towards Hodge Theoretic Characterizations of 2d Rational SCFTs

The study of rational conformal field theories in the moduli space is of particular interest since these theories correspond to points in moduli space where the algebraic and arithmetic structure are usually richer, while also being points where non--trivial physics occurs (such as in the study of attractor black holes and BPS states at rational points). This has led to various attempts to characterize and classify such rational points. In this paper, a conjectured characterization by Gukov--Vafa of rational conformal field theories whose target space is a Ricci flat Kähler manifold is analyzed carefully for the case of toroidal compactifications. We refine the conjectured statement as well as making an effort to verify it, using $T^4$ compactification as a test case. Seven common properties in terms of Hodge theory (including complex multiplication) have been identified for $T^4$-target rational conformal field theories. By imposing three properties out of the seven, however, there remain $\mathcal N = (1,1)$ SCFTs that are not rational. Open questions, implications and future lines of work are discussed.

Chern-Simons Invariants from Ensemble Averages

We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form $Q$. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by $Q$. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

On Mathieu moonshine and Gromov-Witten invariants

We show that a large number of $CY_3$ manifolds are involved in an intricate way in Mathieu moonshine viz. their Gromov--Witten invariants are related to the expansion coefficients of the twined/ twisted--twined elliptic genera of $K3$. We use the string duality between CHL orbifolds of heterotic string theory on $K3 \times T^2$ and type IIA string theory on $CY_3$ manifolds to explicitly show this connection. We then work out two concrete examples where we exactly match the expansion coefficients on both sides of the duality.

Dyonic black hole degeneracies in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ string theory from Dabholkar-Harvey degeneracies

The degeneracies of single-centered dyonic $\frac14$-BPS black holes (BH) in Type II string theory on K3$\times T^2$ are known to be coefficients of certain mock Jacobi forms arising from the Igusa cusp form $Φ_{10}$. In this paper we present an exact analytic formula for these BH degeneracies purely in terms of the degeneracies of the perturbative $\frac12$-BPS states of the theory. We use the fact that the degeneracies are completely controlled by the polar coefficients of the mock Jacobi forms, using the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher circle method. Here we present a simple formula for these polar coefficients as a quadratic function of the $\frac12$-BPS degeneracies. We arrive at the formula by using the physical interpretation of polar coefficients as negative discriminant states, and then making use of previous results in the literature to track the decay of such states into pairs of $\frac12$-BPS states in the moduli space. Although there are an infinite number of such decays, we show that only a finite number of them contribute to the formula. The phenomenon of BH bound state metamorphosis (BSM) plays a crucial role in our analysis. We show that the dyonic BSM orbits with $U$-duality invariant $Δ<0$ are in exact correspondence with the solution sets of the Brahmagupta-Pell equation, which implies that they are isomorphic to the group of units in the order $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{|Δ|}]$ in the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{|Δ|})$. We check our formula against the known numerical data arising from the Igusa cusp form, for the first 1650 polar coefficients, and find perfect agreement.

Heterotic strings on $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_3$ and their dual Calabi-Yau threefolds

In this paper we study compactifications of the ${\cal N}=2$ heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string on $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_3$ with various gauge backgrounds and calculate the topological couplings in the effective supergravity action that arise from one-loop amplitudes. We then identify candidates for dual type IIA compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds and compare the heterotic results with the corresponding topological string amplitudes. We find that the dual Calabi-Yau geometries are $K3$ fibrations that are also genus one fibered with three-sections. Moreover, we show that the intersection form on the polarization lattice of the $K3$ fibration has to be three times the intersection form on the Narain lattice $Γ^{1,1}$.

Calabi-Yau manifolds and sporadic groups

A few years ago a connection between the elliptic genus of the K3 manifold and the largest Mathieu group M$_{24}$ was proposed. We study the elliptic genera for Calabi-Yau manifolds of larger dimensions and discuss potential connections between the expansion coefficients of these elliptic genera and sporadic groups. While the Calabi-Yau 3-fold case is rather uninteresting, the elliptic genera of certain Calabi-Yau $d$-folds for $d>3$ have expansions that could potentially arise from underlying sporadic symmetry groups. We explore such potential connections by calculating twined elliptic genera for a large number of Calabi-Yau 5-folds that are hypersurfaces in weighted projected spaces, for a toroidal orbifold and two Gepner models.
