Deconstructing Supersymmetric S-matrices in D <= 2 + 1

Global supersymmetries of the S-matrices of N = 2, 4, 8 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions (without matter hypermultiplets) are shown to be SU(1|1), SU(2|2) and SU(2|2) X SU(2|2) respectively. These symmetries are not manifest in the off-shell Lagrangian formulations of these theories. A direct map between these symmetries and their representations in terms of the Yang-Mills degrees of freedom and the corresponding quantities in Chern-Simons-Matter theories with N >= 4 supersymmetry is also obtained. Dimensional reduction of the on-shell observables of the Yang-Mills theories to two spacetime dimensions is also discussed.

Supersymmetry and Mass Gap in 2+1 Dimensions: A Gauge Invariant Hamiltonian Analysis

A Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with $0\leq N\leq 4$ supersymmetry in terms of gauge-invariant variables is presented, generalizing earlier work on nonsupersymmetric gauge theories. Special attention is paid to the volume measure of integration (over the gauge orbit space of the fields) which occurs in the inner product for the wave functions and arguments relating it to the renormalization of the Chern-Simons level number and to mass-gaps in the spectrum of the Hamiltonians are presented. The expression for the integration measure is consistent with the absence of mass gap for theories with extended supersymmetry (in the absence of additional matter hypermultiplets and/or Chern-Simons couplings), while for the minimally supersymmetric case, there is a mass-gap, the scale of which is set by a renormalized level number, in agreement with indications from existing literature. The realization of the supersymmetry algebra and the Hamiltonian in terms of the gauge invariant variables is also presented.

Non-local symmetries for Yang-Mills theories and their massive counterparts in two and three dimensions

We identify a non-local symmetry for Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 and 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The symmetry mixes a vector current with the gauge field. The current involved in the symmetry is required to satisfy certain constraints. The explicit solution for the current obeying these constraints, is obtained in two spacetime dimensions and in the abelian case in three dimensions. We conjecture that the current is generated from a non-local gauge and Lorentz invariant mass term in three dimensions and provide some evidence for it. We also posit a conserved current associated with the symmetry generators and derive some of its properties. In the Abelian case, we compute the symmetry algebra and show that additional symmetry generators have to be included for the algebra to close. The algebra contains an SO(2,1) subalgebra. We also comment on the implications of this symmetry for N=1 supersymmetry.

Hidden Local and Non-local Symmetries of S-matrices of N=2,4,8 SYM in D=2+1

This talk, based principally on arXiv:1103.0786, is devoted to properties of tree-level S-matrices of N=2,4,8 SYM in D=2+1. We'll discuss an on-shell formalism for three-dimensional theories inspired by the spinor-helicity framework in four spacetime dimensions. Our framework will be shown be to particularly well suited for the extraction of hidden symmetries and algebraic structures that the scattering amplitudes of the three-dimensional theories posses. In particular we shall discuss the manifest SO(N) symmetry of the S-matrix to all orders in perturbation theory; a symmetry that the Lagrangians of these theories do not have. After a brief discussion of the ramification of the SO(N) invariance to the D2-M2 brane dualities, we shall introduce an on-shell superfield framework for three-dimensional theories and end with a surprising hint of the existence of non-local symmetries for the S-matrix of the N=8 theory.

Manifest SO(N) invariance and S-matrices of three-dimensional N=2,4,8 SYM

An on-shell formalism for the computation of S-matrices of SYM theories in three spacetime dimensions is presented. The framework is a generalization of the spinor-helicity formalism in four dimensions. The formalism is applied to establish the manifest SO(N) covariance of the on-shell superalgebra relevant to N =2,4 and 8 SYM theories in d=3. The results are then used to argue for the SO(N) invariance of the S-matrices of these theories: a claim which is proved explicitly for the four-particle scattering amplitudes. Recursion relations relating tree amplitudes of three-dimensional SYM theories are shown to follow from their four-dimensional counterparts. The results for the four-particle amplitudes are verified by tree-level perturbative computations and a unitarity based construction of the integrand corresponding to the leading perturbative correction is also presented for the N=8 theory. For N=8 SYM, the manifest SO(8) symmetry is used to develop a map between the color-ordered amplitudes of the SYM and superconformal Chern-Simons theories, providing a direct connection between on-shell observables of D2 and M2-brane theories.

SU(2|2) for Theories with Sixteen Supercharges at Weak and Strong Coupling

We consider the dimensional reductions of N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on R x S^3 to the three-dimensional theory on R x S^2, the orbifolded theory on R x S^3/Z_k, and the plane-wave matrix model. With explicit emphasis on the three-dimensional theory, we demonstrate the realization of the SU(2|3) algebra in a radial Hamiltonian framework. Using this structure we constrain the form of the spin chains, their S-matrices, and the corresponding one- and two-loop Hamiltonian of the three dimensional theory and find putative signs of integrability up to the two-loop order. The string duals of these theories admit the IIA plane-wave geometry as their Penrose limit. Using known results for strings quantized on this background, we explicitly construct the strong-coupling dual extended SU(2|2) algebra and discuss its implications for the gauge theories.

A Supersymmetry Preserving Mass-Deformation of N=1 Super Yang-Mills in D=2+1

We construct a massive non-abelian N= 1 SYM theory on R^3. This is achieved by using a non-local gauge and Poincare invariant mass term for gluons due to Nair. The underlying supersymmetry algebra is shown to be a non-central extension of the Poincare algebra by the spacetime rotation group so(3). The incorporation of Chern-Simons couplings in the formalism is also presented. The dimensional reduction of the gauge theory and the SUSY algebra is related to a massive N=2 massive matrix quantum mechanics based on euclidean $Clifford_2(R)$.

Supersymmetric Wilson Loops in Diverse Dimensions

We consider supersymmetric Wilson loops a la Zarembo in planar supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions. Using perturbation theory we show that these loops have trivial vacuum expectation values to second order in the 't Hooft coupling. We review the known superspace results which, for specific dimensions, extend this triviality to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling. Using the gauge/gravity correspondence, we construct the explicit dual fundamental string solutions corresponding to these Wilson loops for the case of circular geometry. We find that the regularized action of these string solutions vanishes. We also generalize the framework of calibrated surfaces to prove the vanishing of the regularized action for loops of general geometry. We propose a possible string-side manifestation of the gauge theory generalized Konishi anomaly in seven dimensions.

Scattering in Mass-Deformed N>=4 Chern-Simons Models

We investigate the scattering matrix in mass-deformed N>=4 Chern-Simons models including as special cases the BLG and ABJM theories of multiple M2 branes. Curiously the structure of this scattering matrix in three spacetime dimensions is equivalent to (a) the two-dimensional worldsheet matrix found in the context of AdS/CFT integrability and (b) the R-matrix of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. The underlying reason is that all three models are based on an extension of the psu(2|2) superalgebra which constrains the matrix completely. We also compute scattering amplitudes in one-loop field theory and find perfect agreement with scattering unitarity.

The Hamiltonian Analysis for Yang-Mills Theory on $R\times S^2$

Pure Yang-Mills theory on ${\mathbb R} \times S^2$ is analyzed in a gauge-invariant Hamiltonian formalism. Using a suitable coordinatization for the sphere and a gauge-invariant matrix parametrization for the gauge potentials, we develop the Hamiltonian formalism in a manner that closely parallels previous analysis on ${\mathbb R}^3$. The volume measure on the physical configuration space of the gauge theory, the nonperturbative mass-gap and the leading term of the vacuum wave functional are discussed using a point-splitting regularization. All the results carry over smoothly to known results on ${\mathbb R}^3$ in the limit in which the sphere is de-compactified to a plane.

Mass Deformations of Super Yang-Mills Theories in D= 2+1, and Super-Membranes: A Note

Mass deformations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions are considered. The gluons of the theories are made massive by the inclusion of a non-local gauge and Poincare invariant mass term due to Alexanian and Nair, while the matter fields are given standard Gaussian mass-terms. It is shown that the dimensional reduction of such mass deformed gauge theories defined on $R^3$ or $R\times T^2$ produces matrix quantum mechanics with massive spectra. In particular, all known massive matrix quantum mechanical models obtained by the deformations of dimensional reductions of minimal super Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions are shown also to arise from the dimensional reductions of appropriate massive Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions. Explicit formulae for the gauge theory actions are provided.

Yang-Mills Theory in 2+1 Dimensions: Coupling of Matter Fields and String-breaking Effects

We explore further the Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions in terms of gauge-invariant matrix variables. Coupling to scalar matter fields is discussed in terms of gauge-invariant fields. We analyze how the screening of adjoint (and other screenable) representations can arise in this formalism. A Schrodinger equation is then derived for the gluelump states which are the daughter states when an adjoint string breaks. A variational solution of this Schrodinger equation leads to an analytic estimate of the string-breaking energy which is within 8.8% of the latest lattice estimates.

Aspects of Integrability in N =4 SYM

Various recently developed connections between supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions and two dimensional integrable systems serve as crucial ingredients in improving our understanding of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this review, we highlight some connections between superconformal four dimensional Yang-Mills theory and various integrable systems. In particular, we focus on the role of Yangian symmetries in studying the gauge theory dual of closed string excitations. We also briefly review how the gauge theory connects to Calogero models and open quantum spin chains through the study of the gauge theory duals of D3 branes and open strings ending on them. This invited review, written for Modern Physics Letters-A, is based on a seminar given at the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton.

Mass-Gaps and Spin Chains for (Super) Membranes

We present a method for computing the non-perturbative mass-gap in the theory of Bosonic membranes in flat background spacetimes with or without background fluxes. The computation of mass-gaps is carried out using a matrix regularization of the membrane Hamiltonians. The mass gap is shown to be naturally organized as an expansion in a 'hidden' parameter, which turns out to be $\frac{1}{d}$: d being the related to the dimensionality of the background space. We then proceed to develop a large $N$ perturbation theory for the membrane/matrix-model Hamiltonians around the quantum/mass corrected effective potential. The same parameter that controls the perturbation theory for the mass gap is also shown to control the Hamiltonian perturbation theory around the effective potential. The large $N$ perturbation theory is then translated into the language of quantum spin chains and the one loop spectra of various Bosonic matrix models are computed by applying the Bethe ansatz to the one-loop effective Hamiltonians for membranes in flat space times. Apart from membranes in flat spacetimes, the recently proposed matrix models (hep-th/0607005) for non-critical membranes in plane wave type spacetimes are also analyzed within the paradigm of quantum spin chains and the Bosonic sectors of all the models proposed in (hep-th/0607005) are diagonalized at the one-loop level.

BPS Operators in N=4 SYM: Calogero Models and 2D Fermions

A connection between the gauge fixed dynamics of protected operators in superconformal Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and Calogero systems is established. This connection generalizes the free Fermion description of the chiral primary operators of the gauge theory formed out of a single complex scalar to more general operators. In particular, a detailed analysis of protected operators charged under an su(1|1)contained in psu(2,2|4) is carried out and a class of operators is identified, whose dynamics is described by the rational super-Calogero model. These results are generalized to arbitrary BPS operators charged under an su(2|3) of the superconformal algebra. Analysis of the non-local symmetries of the super-Calogero model is also carried out, and it is shown that symmetry for a large class of protected operators is a contraction of the corresponding Yangian algebra to a loop algebra.

Open Spin Chains in Super Yang-Mills at Higher Loops: Some Potential Problems with Integrability

The super Yang-Mills duals of open strings attached to maximal giant gravitons are studied in perturbation theory. It is shown that non-BPS baryonic excitations of the gauge theory can be studied within the paradigm of open quantum spin chains even beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. The open spin chain describing the two loop mixing of non-BPS giant gravitons charged under an su(2) of the so(6) R symmetry group is explicitly constructed. It is also shown that although the corresponding open spin chain is integrable at the one loop order, there is a potential breakdown of integrability at two and higher loops. The study of integrability is performed using coordinate Bethe ansatz techniques.

Higher Charges in Dynamical Spin Chains for SYM Theory

We construct, to the first two non-trivial orders, the next conserved charge in the su(2|3) sector of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. This represents a test of integrability in a sector where the interactions change the number of sites of the chain. The expression for the charge is completely determined by the algebra and can be written in a diagrammatic form in terms of the interactions already present in the Hamiltonian. It appears likely that this diagrammatic expression remains valid in the full theory and can be generalized to higher loops and higher charges thus helping in establishing complete integrability for these dynamical chains.

Extraction of parton distributions from lattice QCD

We review the calculation of moments of both the polarized and unpolarized parton distribution functions of the nucleon in lattice QCD, and in particular their extrapolation to the physical region. We also discuss the reconstruction of the x dependence of the valence quark distributions in the nucleon from a finite number of lattice moments.
