Comodule theories in Grothendieck categories and relative Hopf objects

We develop the categorical algebra of the noncommutative base change of a comodule category by means of a Grothendieck category $\mathfrak S$. We describe when the resulting category of comodules is locally finitely generated, locally noetherian or may be recovered as a coreflective subcategory of the noncommutative base change of a module category. We also introduce the category ${_A}\mathfrak S^H$ of relative $(A,H)$-Hopf modules in $\mathfrak S$, where $H$ is a Hopf algebra and $A$ is a right $H$-comodule algebra. We study the cohomological theory in ${_A}\mathfrak S^H$ by means of spectral sequences. Using coinduction functors and functors of coinvariants, we study torsion theories and how they relate to injective resolutions in ${_A}\mathfrak S^H$. Finally, we use the theory of associated primes and support in noncommutative base change of module categories to give direct sum decompositions of minimal injective resolutions in ${_A}\mathfrak S^H$.

From axion quality and naturalness problems to a high-quality $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ QCD relaxion

We highlight general issues associated with quality and naturalness problems in theories of light QCD-axions, axion-like particles, and relaxions. We show the presence of Planck-suppressed operators generically lead to scalar coupling of axions with the Standard model. We present a new class of $\mathbb Z_{N}$ QCD relaxion models that can address both the QCD relaxion CP problem as well as its quality problem. This new class of models also leads to interesting experimental signatures, which can be searched for at the precision frontier.

Categories of modules, comodules and contramodules over representations

We study and relate categories of modules, comodules and contramodules over a representation of a small category taking values in (co)algebras, in a manner similar to modules over a ringed space. As a result, we obtain a categorical framework which incorporates all the adjoint functors between these categories in a natural manner. Various classical properties of coalgebras and their morphisms arise naturally within this theory. We also consider cartesian objects in each of these categories, which may be viewed as counterparts of quasi-coherent sheaves over a scheme. We study their categorical properties using cardinality arguments. Our focus is on generators for these categories and on Grothendieck categories, because the latter may be treated as replacements for noncommutative spaces.

Phase Asymmetry of Andreev Spectra From Cooper-Pair Momentum

In analogy to conventional semiconductor diodes, the Josephson diode exhibits superconducting properties that are asymmetric in applied bias. The effect has been investigated in number of systems recently, and requires a combination of broken time-reversal and inversion symmetries. We demonstrate a dual of the usual Josephson diode effect, a nonreciprocal response of Andreev bound states to a superconducting phase difference across the normal region of a superconductor-normal-superconductor Josephson junction, fabricated using an epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructure. Phase asymmetry of the subgap Andreev spectrum is absent in the absence of in-plane magnetic field and reaches a maximum at 0.15 T applied in the plane of the junction transverse to the current direction. We interpret the phase diode effect in this system as resulting from finite-momentum Cooper pairing due to orbital coupling to the in-plane magnetic field, without invoking Zeeman or spin-orbit coupling.

Search for ultralight dark matter with spectroscopy of radio-frequency atomic transitions

The effects of scalar and pseudoscalar ultralight bosonic dark matter (UBDM) were searched for by comparing the frequency of a quartz oscillator to that of a hyperfine-structure transition in $^{87}$Rb, and an electronic transition in $^{164}$Dy. We constrain linear interactions between a scalar UBDM field and Standard-Model (SM) fields for an underlying UBDM particle mass in the range $1\times10^{-17}-8.3\times10^{-13} $ eV and quadratic interactions between a pseudoscalar UBDM field and SM fields in the range $5\times10^{-18}- 4.1\times10^{-13} $ eV. Within regions of the respective ranges, our constraints on linear interactions significantly improve on results from previous, direct searches for oscillations in atomic parameters, while constraints on quadratic interactions surpass limits imposed by such direct searches as well as by astrophysical observations.

Entwined modules over representations of categories

We introduce a theory of modules over a representation of a small category taking values in entwining structures over a semiperfect coalgebra. This takes forward the aim of developing categories of entwined modules to the same extent as that of module categories as well as the philosophy of Mitchell of working with rings with several objects. The representations are motivated by work of Estrada and Virili, who developed a theory of modules over a representation taking values in small preadditive categories, which were then studied in the same spirit as sheaves of modules over a scheme. We also describe, by means of Frobenius and separable functors, how our theory relates to that of modules over the underlying representation taking values in small $K$-linear categories.

Control of Andreev bound states using superconducting phase texture

Andreev bound states with opposite phase-inversion asymmetries are observed in local and non-local tunneling spectra at the two ends of a superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor planar Josephson junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Spectral signatures agree with a theoretical model, yielding a physical picture in which phase textures in superconducting leads localize and control the position of Andreev bound states in the junction, demonstrating a simple means of controlling the position and size of Andreev states within a planar junction.

Adjunctions between Eilenberg-Moore categories and a PBW-type theorem

Recently, Dotsenko and Tamaroff have shown that a morphism of $T\longrightarrow S$ of monads over a category $\mathscr C$ satisfies the PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ into a free right $T$-module. We consider an adjunction $Ψ=(G,F)$ between categories $\mathscr C$, $\mathscr D$, a monad $S$ on $\mathscr C$ and a monad $T$ on $\mathscr D$. We show that a morphism $ϕ:(\mathscr C,S)\longrightarrow (\mathscr D,T)$ that is well behaved with respect to the adjunction $Ψ$ has a PBW-property if and only if it makes $S$ satisfy a certain freeness condition with respect to $T$-modules with values in $\mathscr C$.

Improved bounds on ultralight scalar dark matter in the radio-frequency range

We present a search for fundamental constant oscillations in the range $20$~kHz-$100$ MHz, that may arise within models for ultralight dark matter (UDM). Using two independent, significantly upgraded optical-spectroscopy apparatus, we achieve up to $\times$1000 greater sensitivity in the search relative to previous work. We report no observation of UDM and thus constrain respective couplings to electrons and photons within the investigated UDM particle mass range $8\cdot 10^{-11}-4\cdot 10^{-7}$ eV. The constraints significantly exceed previously set bounds, and as we show, may surpass in future experiments those provided by equivalence-principle experiments in a specific case regarding the combination of UDM couplings probed by the latter.

Learning Unseen Emotions from Gestures via Semantically-Conditioned Zero-Shot Perception with Adversarial Autoencoders

We present a novel generalized zero-shot algorithm to recognize perceived emotions from gestures. Our task is to map gestures to novel emotion categories not encountered in training. We introduce an adversarial, autoencoder-based representation learning that correlates 3D motion-captured gesture sequence with the vectorized representation of the natural-language perceived emotion terms using word2vec embeddings. The language-semantic embedding provides a representation of the emotion label space, and we leverage this underlying distribution to map the gesture-sequences to the appropriate categorical emotion labels. We train our method using a combination of gestures annotated with known emotion terms and gestures not annotated with any emotions. We evaluate our method on the MPI Emotional Body Expressions Database (EBEDB) and obtain an accuracy of $58.43\%$. This improves the performance of current state-of-the-art algorithms for generalized zero-shot learning by $25$--$27\%$ on the absolute.

Braess Paradox in a quantum network

Dietrich Braess while working on traffic modelling, noticed that traffic flow in a network can be worsened by adding extra edges to an existing network. This seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon is known as the Braess paradox. We consider a quantum network, where edges represent shared entangled states between spatially separated parties(nodes). The goal is to entangle two previously uncorrelated nodes using entanglement swappings. The amount of entanglement between the distant nodes is quantified by the average concurrence of the states established, as a result of the entanglement swappings. We then introduce an additional edge of maximally entangled Bell states in the network. We show that the introduction of the additional maximally entangled states to this network leads to lower concurrence between the two previously un-correlated nodes. Thus we demonstrate the occurrence of a phenomenon in a quantum network that is analogous to the Braess' paradox in traffic networks.

Gravitational Wave Echo of Relaxion Trapping

To solve the hierarchy problem, the relaxion must remain trapped in the correct minimum, even if the electroweak symmetry is restored after reheating. In this scenario, the relaxion starts rolling again until the backreaction potential, with its set of local minima, reappears. Depending on the time of barrier reappearance, Hubble friction alone may be insufficient to retrap the relaxion in a large portion of the parameter space. Thus, an additional source of friction is required, which might be provided by coupling to a dark photon. The dark photon experiences a tachyonic instability as the relaxion rolls, which slows down the relaxion by backreacting to its motion, and efficiently creates anisotropies in the dark photon energy-momentum tensor, sourcing gravitational waves. We calculate the spectrum of the resulting gravitational wave background from this new mechanism, and evaluate its observability by current and future experiments. We further investigate the possibility that the coherently oscillating relaxion constitutes dark matter and present the corresponding constraints from gravitational waves.

Fredholm modules over categories, Connes periodicity and classes in cyclic cohomology

We replace a ring with a small $\mathbb C$-linear category $\mathcal{C}$, seen as a ring with several objects in the sense of Mitchell. We introduce Fredholm modules over this category and construct a Chern character taking values in the cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal C$. We show that this categorified Chern character is homotopy invariant and is well-behaved with respect to the periodicity operator in cyclic cohomology. For this, we also obtain a description of cocycles and coboundaries in the cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal C$ (and more generally, in the Hopf-cyclic cohomology of a Hopf module category) by means of DG-semicategories equipped with a trace on endomorphism spaces.

Weak comp algebras and cup products in secondary Hochschild cohomology of entwining structures

We define the secondary Hochschild complex for an entwining structure over a commutative $k$-algebra $B$. We show that this complex carries the structure of a weak comp algebra. We obtain two distinct cup product structures for the secondary cohomology groups. We also consider a subcomplex on which the two cup products coincide and which satisfies the axioms for being a comp algebra. The cohomology of this subcomplex then forms a Gerstenhaber algebra. We also construct a bicomplex that controls the deformations of the entwining structure over $B$.

One-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Dirac system with extended $s$-wave superconductivity: Majorana modes and Josephson effects

Motivated by the spin-momentum locking of electrons at the boundaries of topological insulators, we study a one-dimensional system of spin-orbit coupled massless Dirac electrons with $s$-wave superconducting pairing. As a result of the spin-orbit coupling, our model has only two kinds of linearly dispersing modes, which we take to be right-moving spin-up and left-moving spin-down. Both lattice and continuum models are studied. In the lattice model, we find that a single Majorana zero energy mode appears at each end of a finite system provided that the $s$-wave pairing has an extended form, with the nearest-neighbor pairing being larger than the on-site pairing. We confirm this both numerically and analytically by calculating the winding number. Next we study a lattice version of a model with both Schrödinger and Dirac-like terms and find that the model hosts a topological transition between topologically trivial and non-trivial phases depending on the relative strength of the Schrödinger and Dirac terms. We then study a continuum system consisting of two $s$-wave superconductors with different phases of the pairing. Remarkably, we find that the system has a {\it single} Andreev bound state which is localized at the junction. When the pairing phase difference crosses a multiple of $2 π$, an Andreev bound state touches the top of the superconducting gap and disappears, and a different state appears from the bottom of the gap. We also study the AC Josephson effect in such a junction with a voltage bias that has both a constant $V_0$ and a term which oscillates with a frequency $ω$. We find that, in contrast to standard Josephson junctions, Shapiro plateaus appear when the Josephson frequency $ω_J= 2eV_0/\hbar$ is a rational fraction of $ω$. We discuss experiments which can realize such junctions.

Homological Algebra of Heyting modules

The collection of open sets of a topological space forms a Heyting algebra, which leads to the idea of a Heyting algebra as a generalized topological space. In fact, a sober topological space may be reconstructed from its locale of open sets. This has given rise to a good theory of presheaves and sheaves over locales. At the same time, several ring like properties of Heyting algebras have also been studied. The purpose of this paper is to study a non-abelian homological theory for modules over Heyting algebras.

Searching for Earth/Solar Axion Halos

We discuss the sensitivity of the present and near-future axion dark matter experiments to a halo of axions or axion-like particles gravitationally bound to the Earth or the Sun. The existence of such halos, assuming they are formed, renders a significant gain in the sensitivity of axion searches while satisfying all the present experimental bounds. The structure and coherence properties of these halos also imply novel signals, which can depend on the latitude or orientation of the detector. We demonstrate this by analysing the sensitivity of several distinct types of axion dark matter experiments.
