Implementation of Hybrid QoS-Aware Data Radio Bearer in 5G Networks

In Fifth-Generation (5G) wireless networks, Quality of Service (QoS) flow management supports diverse applications with heterogeneous QoS requirements, including latency-sensitive and high-throughput services. 5G architectures adopt a flow based QoS framework, where QoS flows are mapped to Data Radio Bearers (DRBs) to achieve the desired radio resource allocation. Existing mapping strategies typically rely on static one-to-one QoS-to-DRB mappings per PDU session, leading to inefficient spectrum utilization or inadequate support for delay sensitive traffic. This work presents a hybrid QoS-aware DRB mapping mechanism based on standardized 5G QoS Identifier (5QI) characteristics. The proposed framework incorporates multiple QoS flows within a single PDU session, supporting both many-to-one and one-to-one mapping strategies. The hybrid framework improves radio resource utilization and reduced bearer overhead by enabling flexible DRB utilization, where compatible non critical flows share DRBs while delay-critical flows are assigned dedicated DRBs to ensure strict QoS guarantees. The proposed hybrid QoS-aware DRB mapping is implemented using the open-source OpenAirInterface (OAI) mobile stack platform to demonstrate the integration of the proposed features within the existing 5G framework.

PRO-RAN: Processor-Level Characterization of Open RAN Centralized and Distributed Units

Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) disaggregates RAN protocol functions and enables Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) software to execute on general-purpose computing platforms. Different CU and DU protocol responsibilities produce different processor workloads and execution paths. Conventional performance metrics, including CPU utilization and throughput, quantify aggregate resource usage without identifying function-level execution costs or processor microarchitectural bottlenecks. Processor-level characterization, on the other hand, provides insights into resource provisioning, function placement, software optimization, and hardware acceleration. The paper describes a controlled characterization framework that evaluates independently deployed CU and DU functions under matched hardware and traffic conditions. The experimental platform integrates the Linux Foundation OCUDU implementation with an emulated User Equipment, a ZeroMQ-based radio interface, and an Open5GS core. Automated validation confirms registration and bidirectional packet delivery before process-scoped Intel VTune Hotspots and Top-Down Microarchitecture Analysis. Under traffic load, accumulated process CPU time increases from 17.3 s to 37.4 s for the CU and from 462.0 s to 628.4 s for the DU during equal 300-s profiling intervals. The measurements identify distinct CU and DU execution characteristics and motivate function-specific processor analysis and optimization.

Designing an Energy Efficient Framework for Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Network

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a collection of nodes which can communicate with each other without any prior infrastructure along with the ability to collect data autonomously and effectively after being deployed in an ad-hoc fashion to monitor a given area. One major problem encountered in data gathering wireless systems is to obtain an optimal balance among the number of nodes deployed, energy efficiency and lifetime as energy of nodes cannot be replenished. In this paper we propose first a scheme to estimate the number of nodes to be deployed in a WSN for a predetermined lifetime so that total energy utilization and complete connectivity are ensured under all circumstances. This scheme also guarantees that during each data gathering cycle, every node dissipates the requisite amount of energy, which thus minimizes the number of nodes required to achieve the desired network lifetime. Second, this paper has proposed a framework to conduct data gathering in WSN. Extensive simulations have been carried out in ns2 to establish the effectiveness of this framework.
