Non-equilibrium stationary state of a harmonic crystal with alternating masses

We analyze the non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) of a one dimensional harmonic chain of $N$ atoms with alternating masses connected to heat reservoirs at unequal temperatures. We find that the temperature profile defined through the local kinetic energy $T(j) \equiv { }/{m_j}$, oscillates with period two in the bulk of the system. Depending on boundary conditions, either the heavier or the lighter particles in the bulk are hotter. We obtain exact expressions for the bulk temperature profile and steady state current in the limit $N \rightarrow \infty$. These depend on whether $N$ is odd or even. We also study similar temperature oscillations in the NESS of systems with noise in the dynamics. These die out as $N \rightarrow \infty$.

Nonequilibrium density matrix description of steady state quantum transport

With this work we investigate the stationary nonequilibrium density matrix of current carrying nonequilibrium steady states of in-between quantum systems that are connected to reservoirs. We describe the analytical procedure to obtain the explicit result for the reduced density matrix of quantum transport when the system, the connecting reservoirs and, as well, the system-reservoir interactions are described by quadratic Hamiltonians. Our procedure is detailed for both, electronic transport described by the tight-binding Hamiltonian and for phonon transport described by harmonic Hamiltonians. For the special case of weak system-reservoir couplings, a more detailed description of the steady-state density matrix is obtained. Several paradigm transport setups for inter-electrode electron transport and low-dimensional phonon heat flux are elucidated.

Additivity Principle in High-dimensional Deterministic Systems

The additivity principle (AP), conjectured by Bodineau and Derrida [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol.92, 180601 (2004)], is discussed for the case of heat conduction in three-dimensional disordered harmonic lattices to consider the effects of deterministic dynamics, higher dimensionality, and different transport regimes, i.e., ballistic, diffusive, and anomalous transport. The cumulant generating function (CGF) for heat transfer is accurately calculated, and compared with the one given by the AP. In the diffusive regime, we find a clear agreement with the conjecture even if the system is high-dimensional. Surprisingly even in the anomalous regime the CGF is also well fitted by the AP. Lower dimensional systems are also studied and the importance of three-dimensionality for the validity is stressed.

Tunable thermal conductivity in defect engineered nanowires at low temperatures

We measure the thermal conductivity ($κ$) of individual InAs nanowires (NWs), and find that it is 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the bulk value in the temperature range of 10 to 50 K. We argue that the low $κ$ arises from the strong localization of phonons in the random superlattice of twin-defects oriented perpendicular to the axis of the NW. We observe significant electronic contribution arising from the surface accumulation layer which gives rise to tunability of $κ$ with the application of electrostatic gate and magnetic field. Our devices and measurements of $κ$ at different carrier concentrations and magnetic field without introducing structural defects, offer a means to study new aspects of nanoscale thermal transport.

Generating Function Formula of Heat Transfer in Harmonic Networks

We consider heat transfer across an arbitrary harmonic network connected to two heat baths at different temperatures. The network has $N$ positional degrees of freedom, of which $N_L$ are connected to a bath at temperature $T_L$ and $N_R$ are connected to a bath at temperature $T_R$. We derive an exact formula for the cumulant generating function for heat transfer between the two baths. The formula is valid even for $N_L \ne N_R$ and satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation symmetry. Since harmonic crystals in three dimensions are known to exhibit different regimes of transport such as ballistic, anomalous and diffusive, our result implies validity of the fluctuation theorem in all regimes. Our exact formula provides a powerful tool to study other properties of nonequilibrium current fluctuations.

Large deviations of heat flow in harmonic chains

We consider heat transport across a harmonic chain connected at its two ends to white-noise Langevin reservoirs at different temperatures. In the steady state of this system the heat $Q$ flowing from one reservoir into the system in a finite time $τ$ has a distribution $P(Q,τ)$. We study the large time form of the corresponding moment generating function $ \sim g(λ) e^{τμ(λ)}$. Exact formal expressions, in terms of phonon Green's functions, are obtained for both $μ(λ)$ and also the lowest order correction $g(λ)$. We point out that, in general a knowledge of both $μ(λ)$ and $g(λ)$ is required for finding the large deviation function associated with $P(Q,τ)$. The function $μ(λ)$ is known to be the largest eigenvector of an appropriate Fokker-Planck type operator and our method also gives the corresponding eigenvector exactly.

Application of importance sampling to the computation of large deviations in non-equilibrium processes

We present an algorithm for finding the probabilities of rare events in nonequilibrium processes. The algorithm consists of evolving the system with a modified dynamics for which the required event occurs more frequently. By keeping track of the relative weight of phase-space trajectories generated by the modified and the original dynamics one can obtain the required probabilities. The algorithm is tested on two model systems of steady-state particle and heat transport where we find a huge improvement from direct simulation methods.

Heat conduction in disordered harmonic lattices with energy conserving noise

We study heat conduction in a harmonic crystal whose bulk dynamics is supplemented by random reversals (flips) of the velocity of each particle at a rate $λ$. The system is maintained in a nonequilibrium stationary state(NESS) by contacts with Langevin reservoirs at different temperatures. We show that the one-body and pair correlations in this system are the same (after an appropriate mapping of parameters) as those obtained for a model with self-consistent reservoirs. This is true both for the case of equal and random(quenched) masses. While the heat conductivity in the NESS of the ordered system is known explicitly, much less is known about the random mass case. Here we investigate the random system, with velocity flips. We improve the bounds on the Green-Kubo conductivity obtained by C.Bernardin. The conductivity of the 1D system is then studied both numerically and analytically. This sheds some light on the effect of noise on the transport properties of systems with localized states caused by quenched disorder.

Stochastic pump of interacting particles

We consider the overdamped motion of Brownian particles, interacting via particle exclusion, in an external potential that varies with time and space. We show that periodic potentials that maintain specific position-dependent phase relations generate time-averaged directed current of particles. We obtain analytic results for a lattice version of the model using a recently developed perturbative approach. Many interesting features like particle-hole symmetry, current reversal with changing density, and system-size dependence of current are obtained. We propose possible experiments to test our predictions.

Energy current magnification in coupled oscillator loops

Motivated by studies on current magnification in quantum mesoscopic systems we consider sound and heat transmission in classical models of oscillator chains. A loop of coupled oscillators is connected to two leads through which one can either transmit monochromatic waves or white noise signal from heat baths. We look for the possibility of current magnification in this system due to some asymmetry introduced between the two arms in the loop. We find that current magnification is indeed obtained for particular frequency ranges. However the integrated current shows the effect only in the presence of a pinning potential for the atoms in the leads. We also study the effect of anharmonicity on current magnification.

Linear response formula for finite frequency thermal conductance of open systems

An exact linear response expression is obtained for the heat current in a classical Hamiltonian system coupled to heat baths with time-dependent temperatures. The expression is equally valid at zero and finite frequencies. We present numerical results on the frequency dependence of the response function for three different one-dimensional models of coupled oscillators connected to Langevin baths with oscillating temperatures. For momentum conserving systems, a low frequency peak is seen that, is higher than the zero frequency response for large systems. For momentum non-conserving systems, there is no low frequency peak. The momentum non-conserving system is expected to satisfy Fourier's law, however, at the single bond level, we do not see any clear agreement with the predictions of the diffusion equation even at low frequencies. We also derive an exact analytical expression for the response of a chain of harmonic oscillators to a (not necessarily small) temperature difference; the agreement with the linear response simulation results for the same system is excellent.

Heat conduction and phonon localization in disordered harmonic crystals

We investigate the steady state heat current in two and three dimensional isotopically disordered harmonic lattices. Using localization theory as well as kinetic theory we estimate the system size dependence of the current. These estimates are compared with numerical results obtained using an exact formula for the current given in terms of a phonon transmission function, as well as by direct nonequilibrium simulations. We find that heat conduction by high-frequency modes is suppressed by localization while low-frequency modes are strongly affected by boundary conditions. Our {\color{black}heuristic} arguments show that Fourier's law is valid in a three dimensional disordered solid except for special boundary conditions. We also study the pinned case relevant to localization in quantum systems and often used as a model system to study the validity of Fourier's law. Here we provide the first numerical verification of Fourier's law in three dimensions. In the two dimensional pinned case we find that localization of phonon modes leads to a heat insulator.

Heat conduction in a three dimensional anharmonic crystal

We perform nonequilibrium simulations of heat conduction in a three dimensional anharmonic lattice. By studying slabs of length N and width W, we examine the cross-over from one-dimensional to three dimensional behavior of the thermal conductivity. We find that for large N, the cross-over takes place at a small value of the aspect ratio W/N. From our numerical data we conclude that the three dimensional system has a finite non-diverging thermal conductivity and thus provide the first verification of Fourier's law in a system without pinning.

Heat transport and phonon localization in mass-disordered harmonic crystals

We investigate the steady state heat current in two and three dimensional disordered harmonic crystals in a slab geometry, connected at the boundaries to stochastic white noise heat baths at different temperatures. The disorder causes short wavelength phonon modes to be localized so the heat current in this system is carried by the extended phonon modes which can be either diffusive or ballistic. Using ideas both from localization theory and from kinetic theory we estimate the contribution of various modes to the heat current and from this we obtain the asymptotic system size dependence of the current. These estimates are compared with results obtained from a numerical evaluation of an exact formula for the current, given in terms of a frequency transmission function, as well as from direct nonequilibrium simulations. These yield a strong dependence of the heat flux on boundary conditions. Our analytical arguments show that for realistic boundary conditions the conductivity is finite in three dimensions but we are not able to verify this numerically, except in the case where the system is subjected to an external pinning potential. This case is closely related to the problem of localization of electrons in a random potential and here we numerically verify that the pinned three dimensional system satisfies Fourier's law while the two dimensional system is a heat insulator. We also investigate the inverse participation ratio of different normal modes.

Nonequilibrium charge transport in an interacting open system: two-particle resonance and current asymmetry

We use Lippman-Schwinger scattering theory to study nonequilibrium electron transport through an interacting open quantum dot. The two-particle current is evaluated exactly while we use perturbation theory to calculate the current when the leads are Fermi liquids at different chemical potentials. We find an interesting two-particle resonance induced by the interaction and obtain criteria to observe it when a small bias is applied across the dot. Finally, for a system without spatial inversion symmetry we find that the two-particle current is quite different depending on whether the electrons are incident from the left lead or the right lead.

Green-Kubo formula for heat conduction in open systems

We obtain an exact Green-Kubo type linear response result for the heat current in an open system. The result is derived for classical Hamiltonian systems coupled to heat baths. Both lattice models and fluid systems are studied and several commonly used implementations of heat baths, stochastic as well as deterministic, are considered. The results are valid in arbitrary dimensions and for any system sizes. Our results are useful for obtaining the linear response transport properties of mesoscopic systems. Also we point out that for systems with anomalous heat transport, as is the case in low-dimensional systems, the use of the standard Green-Kubo formula is problematic and the open system formula should be used.

Heat Transport in low-dimensional systems

Recent results on theoretical studies of heat conduction in low-dimensional systems are presented. These studies are on simple, yet nontrivial, models. Most of these are classical systems, but some quantum-mechanical work is also reported. Much of the work has been on lattice models corresponding to phononic systems, and some on hard particle and hard disc systems. A recently developed approach, using generalized Langevin equations and phonon Green's functions, is explained and several applications to harmonic systems are given. For interacting systems, various analytic approaches based on the Green-Kubo formula are described, and their predictions are compared with the latest results from simulation. These results indicate that for momentum-conserving systems, transport is anomalous in one and two dimensions, and the thermal conductivity kappa, diverges with system size L, as kappa ~ L^alpha. For one dimensional interacting systems there is strong numerical evidence for a universal exponent alpha =1/3, but there is no exact proof for this so far. A brief discussion of some of the experiments on heat conduction in nanowires and nanotubes is also given.

Particle current in symmetric exclusion process with time-dependent hopping rates

In a recent study, (Jain et al 2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 190601), a symmetric exclusion process with time-dependent hopping rates was introduced. Using simulations and a perturbation theory, it was shown that if the hopping rates at two neighboring sites of a closed ring vary periodically in time and have a relative phase difference, there is a net DC current which decreases inversely with the system size. In this work, we simplify and generalize our earlier treatment. We study a model where hopping rates at all sites vary periodically in time, and show that for certain choices of relative phases, a DC current of order unity can be obtained. Our results are obtained using a perturbation theory in the amplitude of the time-dependent part of the hopping rate. We also present results obtained in a sudden approximation that assumes large modulation frequency.
