Large values of newforms on GL(2) with highly ramified central character

We give a lower bound for the sup-norm of an $L^2$-normalized newform in an irreducible, unitary, cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL_2$ over a number field. When the central character of $π$ is sufficiently ramified, this bound improves upon the trivial bound by a positive power of $N$ where $N$ is the norm of the conductor of $π$. This generalizes a result of Templier, who dealt with the special case when the conductor of the central character equals the conductor of the representation. We also make a conjecture about the true size of the sup-norm in the $N$-aspect that takes into account this central character phenomenon. Our results depend upon some explicit formulas and bounds for the Whittaker newvector over a non-archimedean local field, which may be of independent interest.

Bayesian inference for Gaussian graphical models beyond decomposable graphs

Bayesian inference for graphical models has received much attention in the literature in recent years. It is well known that when the graph G is decomposable, Bayesian inference is significantly more tractable than in the general non-decomposable setting. Penalized likelihood inference on the other hand has made tremendous gains in the past few years in terms of scalability and tractability. Bayesian inference, however, has not had the same level of success, though a scalable Bayesian approach has its respective strengths, especially in terms of quantifying uncertainty. To address this gap, we propose a scalable and flexible novel Bayesian approach for estimation and model selection in Gaussian undirected graphical models. We first develop a class of generalized G-Wishart distributions with multiple shape parameters for an arbitrary underlying graph. This class contains the G-Wishart distribution as a special case. We then introduce the class of Generalized Bartlett (GB) graphs, and derive an efficient Gibbs sampling algorithm to obtain posterior draws from generalized G-Wishart distributions corresponding to a GB graph. The class of Generalized Bartlett graphs contains the class of decomposable graphs as a special case, but is substantially larger than the class of decomposable graphs. We proceed to derive theoretical properties of the proposed Gibbs sampler. We then demonstrate that the proposed Gibbs sampler is scalable to significantly higher dimensional problems as compared to using an accept-reject or a Metropolis-Hasting algorithm. Finally, we show the efficacy of the proposed approach on simulated and real data.

Representations of SL_2(R) and nearly holomorphic modular forms

In this semi-expository note, we give a new proof of a structure theorem due to Shimura for nearly holomorphic modular forms on the complex upper half plane. Roughly speaking, the theorem says that the space of all nearly holomorphic modular forms is the direct sum of the subspaces obtained by applying appropriate weight-raising operators on the spaces of holomorphic modular forms and on the one-dimensional space spanned by the weight 2 nearly holomorphic Eisenstein series. While Shimura's proof was classical, ours is representation-theoretic. We deduce the structure theorem from a decomposition for the space of n-finite automorphic forms on SL_2(R). To prove this decomposition, we use the mechanism of category O and a careful analysis of the various possible indecomposable submodules. It is possible to achieve the same end by more direct methods, but we prefer this approach as it generalizes to other groups. This note may be viewed as the toy case of our paper ["Lowest weight modules of Sp_4(R) and nearly holomorphic Siegel modular forms"], where we prove an analogous structure theorem for vector-valued nearly holomorphic Siegel modular forms of degree two.

Local and global Maass relations (expanded version)

We characterize the irreducible, admissible, spherical representations of GSp(4,F) (where F is a p-adic field) that occur in certain CAP representations in terms of relations satisfied by their spherical vector in a special Bessel model. These local relations are analogous to the Maass relations satisfied by the Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 in the image of the Saito-Kurokawa lifting. We show how the classical Maass relations can be deduced from the local relations in a representation theoretic way, without recourse to the construction of Saito-Kurokawa lifts in terms of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight modular forms or Jacobi forms. As an additional application of our methods, we give a new characterization of Saito-Kurokawa lifts involving a certain average of Fourier coefficients.

Bounds for Rankin--Selberg integrals and quantum unique ergodicity for powerful levels

Let f be a classical holomorphic newform of level q and even weight k. We show that the pushforward to the full level modular curve of the mass of f equidistributes as qk -> infinity. This generalizes known results in the case that q is squarefree. We obtain a power savings in the rate of equidistribution as q becomes sufficiently "powerful" (far away from being squarefree), and in particular in the "depth aspect" as q traverses the powers of a fixed prime. We compare the difficulty of such equidistribution problems to that of corresponding subconvexity problems by deriving explicit extensions of Watson's formula to certain triple product integrals involving forms of non-squarefree level. By a theorem of Ichino and a lemma of Michel--Venkatesh, this amounts to a detailed study of Rankin--Selberg integrals int|f|^2 E attached to newforms f of arbitrary level and Eisenstein series E of full level. We find that the local factors of such integrals participate in many amusing analogies with global L-functions. For instance, we observe that the mass equidistribution conjecture with a power savings in the depth aspect is equivalent to the union of a global subconvexity bound and what we call a "local subconvexity bound"; a consequence of our local calculations is what we call a "local Lindelof hypothesis".

On ratios of Petersson norms for Yoshida lifts

We prove an algebraicity property for a certain ratio of Petersson norms associated to a Siegel cusp form of degree 2 (and arbitrary level) whose adelization generates a weak endoscopic lift. As a preparation for this, we explicate various features of the correspondence between scalar valued Siegel cusp forms of degree n and automorphic representations on GSp_{2n}.

Yoshida lifts and simultaneous non-vanishing of dihedral twists of modular L-functions

Given elliptic modular forms f and g satisfying certain conditions on their weights and levels, we prove (a quantitative version of the statement) that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields K and characters chi of the ideal class group Cl_K such that L(1/2, f_K \times chi) \neq 0 and L(1/2, g_K \times chi) \neq 0. The proof is based on a non-vanishing result for Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms combined with the theory of Yoshida liftings.

Transfer of Siegel cusp forms of degree 2

Let $π$ be the automorphic representation of $\GSp_4(\A)$ generated by a full level cuspidal Siegel eigenform that is not a Saito-Kurokawa lift, and $τ$ be an arbitrary cuspidal, automorphic representation of $\GL_2(\A)$. Using Furusawa's integral representation for $\GSp_4\times\GL_2$ combined with a pullback formula involving the unitary group $\GU(3,3)$, we prove that the $L$-functions $L(s,π\timesτ)$ are "nice". The converse theorem of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro then implies that such representations $π$ have a functorial lifting to a cuspidal representation of $\GL_4(\A)$. Combined with the exterior-square lifting of Kim, this also leads to a functorial lifting of $π$ to a cuspidal representation of $\GL_5(\A)$. As an application, we obtain analytic properties of various $L$-functions related to full level Siegel cusp forms. We also obtain special value results for $\GSp_4\times\GL_1$ and $\GSp_4\times\GL_2$.

Determination of modular forms by fundamental Fourier coefficients

This article is a research exposition based on the author's talk at the International Colloquium on Automorphic Representations and L-Functions, 2012, held at TIFR, Mumbai. We consider some special cases of the following question: when is a natural subset of the Fourier coefficients sufficient to uniquely determine a "modular form"? Two kinds of modular forms are considered in this article: a) classical modular forms of half-integral weight, and b) Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and integral weight. These two apparently different scenarios turn out to be closely related. Our results were motivated by, and have several interesting connections to, automorphic L-functions and Bessel models.

Siegel cusp forms of degree 2 are determined by their fundamental Fourier coefficients

We prove that a Siegel cusp form of degree 2 for the full modular group is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(S) with 4 det(S) ranging over odd squarefree integers. As a key step to our result, we also prove that a classical cusp form of half-integral weight and level 4N, with N odd and squarefree, is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(d) with d ranging over odd squarefree integers, a result that was previously known only for Hecke eigenforms.

Local spectral equidistribution for Siegel modular forms and applications

We study the distribution, in the space of Satake parameters, of local components of Siegel cusp forms of genus 2 and growing weight, subject to a specific weighting which allows us to apply results concerning Bessel models and a variant of Petersson's formula. We obtain for this family a quantitative local equidistribution result, and derive a number of consequences. In particular, we show that the computation of the density of low-lying zeros of the spinor L-functions (for restricted test functions) gives global evidence for a well-known conjecture of Böcherer concerning the arithmetic nature of Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms.

Structure formation by nanosilica particles suspended in levitated droplet

Vaporization of liquid droplets containing particles has been studied extensively for its applications in combustion, thermal coating, ink-jet printing, spray cooling, drug delivery, and surface patterning. Droplets containing solid particles show a preferential solute-migration during drying process. Recently we carried out experiments with vaporizing droplet suspended in an acoustic levitator. In this work, we present detailed study of a laser irradiated droplet containing nanosilica particles. Infrared and High speed imaging of the heating process for different concentrations of nanosilica revealed an interesting solute migration pattern. Further investigation with Particle Image Velocimetry shows presence of strong recirculation within the levitated droplet. It also reveals that with increasing viscosity of the liquid the strength of this recirculation decreases. Due to the droplets rotation about the levitator axis, a centrifugal force also dominated the flow field within the droplet. High speed imaging shows that initial stage of heating is dominated by sharper diameter reduction. At the end of this stage the droplet takes a bowl shape. Next stage, which is termed as structure formation shows different characteristics for higher and lower concentrations. For nanosilica concentration of less than 1.3%, the bowl shape remains unaltered with further heating. On the other hand, for concentration greater than 1.9%, due to stronger centrifugal effect than recirculation, the particles migrate towards the equator plane creating horizontal ring structure. The horizontal ring very soon starts oscillating about the levitator axis. This creates an imbalance of forces resulting in reorientation of the ring. Thus a vertical ring is created.

Prime density results for Hecke eigenvalues of a Siegel cusp form

Let F in S_k(Sp(2g, Z)) be a cuspidal Siegel eigenform of genus g with normalized Hecke eigenvalues mu_F(n). Suppose that the associated automorphic representation pi_F is locally tempered everywhere. For each c>0 we consider the set of primes p for which |mu_F(p)| >= c and we provide an explicit upper bound on the density of this set. In the case g=2, we also provide an explicit upper bound on the density of the set of primes p for which mu_F(p) >= c.

Pullbacks of Eisenstein series from GU(3,3) and critical L-values for GSp(4) X GL(2)

Let F be a genus two Siegel newform and g a classical newform, both of squarefree levels and of equal weight l. We prove a pullback formula for certain Eisenstein series -- thus generalizing a construction of Shimura -- and use this to derive an explicit integral representation for the degree eight L-function L(s, F X g). This integral representation involves the pullback of a simple Siegel-type Eisenstein series on the unitary group GU(3,3). As an application, we prove a reciprocity law -- predicted by Deligne's conjecture -- for the critical special values L(m, F X g) where m is an integer, 2 <= m <= l/2-1.

L-functions for holomorphic forms on GSp(4) x GL(2) and their special values

We provide an explicit integral representation for L-functions of pairs (F,g) where F is a holomorphic genus 2 Siegel newform and g a holomorphic elliptic newform, both of squarefree levels and of equal weights. When F,g have level one, this was earlier known by the work of Furusawa. The extension is not straightforward. Our methods involve precise double-coset and volume computations as well as an explicit formula for the Bessel model for GSp(4) in the Steinberg case; the latter is possibly of independent interest. We apply our integral representation to prove an algebraicity result for a critical special value of L(s, F \times g). This is in the spirit of known results on critical values of triple product L-functions, also of degree 8, though there are significant differences.

Hilbert modular forms of weight 1/2 and theta functions

Serre and Stark found a basis for the space of modular forms of weight 1/2 in terms of theta series. In this paper, we generalize their result - under certain mild restrictions on the level and character - to the case of weight 1/2 Hilbert modular forms over a totally real field of narrow class number 1. The methods broadly follow those of Serre-Stark; however we are forced to overcome technical difficulties which arise when we move out of Q.
