Analysis of a diffuse interface method for the Stokes-Darcy coupled problem

We consider the interaction between a free flowing fluid and a porous medium flow, where the free flowing fluid is described using the time dependent Stokes equations, and the porous medium flow is described using Darcy's law in the primal formulation. To solve this problem numerically, we use a diffuse interface approach, where the weak form of the coupled problem is written on an extended domain which contains both Stokes and Darcy regions. This is achieved using a phase-field function which equals one in the Stokes region and zero in the Darcy region, and smoothly transitions between these two values on a diffuse region of width $\mathcal{O}(ε)$ around the Stokes-Darcy interface. We prove convergence of the diffuse interface formulation to the standard, sharp interface formulation, and derive rates of convergence. This is performed by deriving a priori error estimates for discretizations of the diffuse interface method, and by analyzing the modeling error of the diffuse interface approach at the continuous level. The convergence rates are also shown computationally in a numerical example.

Convergent, with rates, methods for normalized infinity Laplace, and related, equations

We propose a monotone, and consistent numerical scheme for the approximation of the Dirichlet problem for the normalized Infinity Laplacian, which could be related to the family of so--called two--scale methods. We show that this method is convergent, and prove rates of convergence. These rates depend not only on the regularity of the solution, but also on whether or not the right hand side vanishes. Some extensions to this approach, like obstacle problems and symmetric Finsler norms are also considered.

Diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes: Discrete energy-balance laws and compactness properties

We study diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) schemes when applied to abstract evolution problems that fit into the Gelfand-triple framework. We introduce novel stability notions that are well-suited to this setting and provide simple, necessary and sufficient, conditions to verify that a DIRK scheme is stable in our sense and in Bochner-type norms. We use several popular DIRK schemes in order to illustrate cases that satisfy the required structural stability properties and cases that do not. In addition, under some mild structural conditions on the problem we can guarantee compactness of families of discrete solutions with respect to time discretization.

Preconditioned accelerated gradient descent methods for locally Lipschitz smooth objectives with applications to the solution of nonlinear PDEs

We develop a theoretical foundation for the application of Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent method (AGD) to the approximation of solutions of a wide class of partial differential equations (PDEs). This is achieved by proving the existence of an invariant set and exponential convergence rates when its preconditioned version (PAGD) is applied to minimize locally Lipschitz smooth, strongly convex objective functionals. We introduce a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) with a preconditioner built-in and show that PAGD is an explicit time-discretization of this ODE, which requires a natural time step restriction for energy stability. At the continuous time level, we show an exponential convergence of the ODE solution to its steady state using a simple energy argument. At the discrete level, assuming the aforementioned step size restriction, the existence of an invariant set is proved and a matching exponential rate of convergence of the PAGD scheme is derived by mimicking the energy argument and the convergence at the continuous level. Applications of the PAGD method to numerical PDEs are demonstrated with certain nonlinear elliptic PDEs using pseudo-spectral methods for spatial discretization, and several numerical experiments are conducted. The results confirm the global geometric and mesh size-independent convergence of the PAGD method, with an accelerated rate that is improved over the preconditioned gradient descent (PGD) method.

Time fractional gradient flows: Theory and numerics

We develop the theory of fractional gradient flows: an evolution aimed at the minimization of a convex, l.s.c.~energy, with memory effects. This memory is characterized by the fact that the negative of the (sub)gradient of the energy equals the so-called Caputo derivative of the state. We introduce the notion of energy solutions, for which we provide existence, uniqueness and certain regularizing effects. We also consider Lipschitz perturbations of this energy. For these problems we provide an a posteriori error estimate and show its reliability. This estimate depends only on the problem data, and imposes no constraints between consecutive time-steps. On the basis of this estimate we provide an a priori error analysis that makes no assumptions on the smoothness of the solution.

The Darcy problem with porosity depending exponentially on the pressure

We consider the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a porous medium. We allow the permeability of the medium to depend exponentially on the pressure and provide an analysis for this model. We study a splitting formulation where a convection diffusion problem is used to define the permeability, which is then used in a linear Darcy equation. We also study a discretization of this problem, and provide an error analysis for it.

Estimation of the continuity constants for Bogovski\uı and regularized Poincaré integral operators

We study the dependence of the continuity constants for the regularized Poincaré and Bogovski\uı integral operators acting on differential forms defined on a domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We, in particular, study the dependence of such constants on certain geometric characteristics of the domain when these operators are considered as mappings from (a subset of) $L^2(Ω,Λ^\ell)$ to $H^1(Ω,Λ^{\ell-1})$, $\ell \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$. For domains $Ω$ that are star shaped with respect to a ball $B$ we study the dependence of the constants on the ratio $diam(Ω)/diam(B)$. A program on how to develop estimates for higher order Sobolev norms is presented. The results are extended to certain classes of unions of star shaped domains.

The stationary Boussinesq problem under singular forcing

In Lipschitz two and three dimensional domains, we study the existence for the so--called Boussinesq model of thermally driven convection under singular forcing. By singular we mean that the heat source is allowed to belong to $H^{-1}(\varpi,Ω)$, where $\varpi$ is a weight in the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ that is regular near the boundary. We propose a finite element scheme and, under the assumption that the domain is convex and $\varpi^{-1} \in A_1$, show its convergence. In the case that the thermal diffusion and viscosity are constants, we propose an a posteriori error estimator and show its reliability and local efficiency.

A posteriori error estimates for the stationary Navier Stokes equations with Dirac measures

In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for finite element approximations of the stationary Navier Stokes equations with singular sources on Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polygonal domains. Under a smallness assumption on the continuous and discrete solutions, we prove that the devised error estimator is reliable and locally efficient. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.

A weighted setting for the stationary Navier Stokes equations under singular forcing

In two dimensions, we show existence of solutions to the stationary Navier Stokes equations on weighted spaces $\mathbf{H}^1_0(ω,Ω) \times L^2(ω,Ω)$, where the weight belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$. We show how this theory can be applied to obtain a priori error estimates for approximations of the solution to the Navier Stokes problem with singular sources.

Stability of the Stokes projection on weighted spaces and applications

We show that, on convex polytopes and two or three dimensions, the finite element Stokes projection is stable on weighted spaces $\mathbf{W}^{1,p}_0(ω,Ω) \times L^p(ω,Ω)$, where the weight belongs to a certain Muckenhoupt class and the integrability index can be different from two. We show how this estimate can be applied to obtain error estimates for approximations of the solution to the Stokes problem with singular sources.

The Monge-Ampère equation

We review recent advances in the numerical analysis of the Monge-Ampère equation. Various computational techniques are discussed including wide-stencil finite difference schemes, two-scaled methods, finite element methods, and methods based on geometric considerations. Particular focus is the development of appropriate stability and consistency estimates which lead to rates of convergence of the discrete approximations. Finally we present numerical experiments which highlight each method for a variety of test problem with different levels of regularity.

A posteriori error estimates for the Stokes problem with singular sources

We propose a posteriori error estimators for classical low-order inf-sup stable and stabilized finite element approximations of the Stokes problem with singular sources in two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains. The designed error estimators are proven to be reliable and locally efficient. On the basis of these estimators we design a simple adaptive strategy that yields optimal rates of convergence for the numerical examples that we perform.

An a posteriori error analysis of an elliptic optimal control problem in measure space

We propose an a posteriori error estimator for a sparse optimal control problem: the control variable lies in the space of regular Borel measures. We consider a solution technique that relies on the discretization of the control variable as a linear combination of Dirac measures. The proposed a posteriori error estimator can be decomposed into the sum of two contributions: an error estimator in the maximum norm for the discretization of the adjoint equation and an estimator in the $L^2$-norm that accounts for the approximation of the state equation. We prove that the designed error estimator is locally efficient and we explore its reliability properties. The analysis is valid for two and three-dimensional domains. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.

The Poisson and Stokes problems in nonconvex, Lipschitz polytopes

We show the well-posedness of the Poisson and Stokes problems in weighted spaces over nonconvex, Lipschitz polytopes. For a particular range of $p$, we consider those weights in the Muckenhoupt class $A_p$ that have no singularities in a neighborhood of the boundary of the domain.
