Norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms

In this paper we study the structure of the set $\mbox{Hom}(X,\mathbb{R})$ of all lattice homomorphisms from a Banach lattice $X$ into $\mathbb{R}$. Using the relation among lattice homomorphisms and disjoint families, we prove that the topological dual of the free Banach lattice $FBL(A)$ generated by a set $A$ contains a disjoint family of cardinality $2^{|A|}$, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. We also deal with norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms. For classical Banach lattices, as $c_0$, $L_p$-, and $C(K)$-spaces, every lattice homomorphism on it attains its norm, which shows, in particular, that there is no James theorem for this class of functions. We prove that, indeed, every lattice homomorphism on $X$ and $C(K,X)$ attains its norm whenever $X$ has order continuous norm. On the other hand, we provide what seems to be the first example in the literature of a lattice homomorphism which does not attain its norm. In general, we study the existence and characterization of lattice homomorphisms not attaining their norm in free Banach lattices. As a consequence, it is shown that no Bishop-Phelps type theorem holds true in the Banach lattice setting, i.e. not every lattice homomorphism can be approximated by norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms.

Octahedral norms in free Banach lattices

In this paper, we study octahedral norms in free Banach lattices $FBL[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$. We prove that if $E$ is an $L_1(μ)$-space, a predual of von Neumann algebra, a predual of a JBW$^*$-triple, the dual of an $M$-embedded Banach space, the disc algebra or the projective tensor product under some hypothesis, then the norm of $FBL[E]$ is octahedral. We get the analogous result when the topological dual $E^*$ of $E$ is almost square. We finish the paper by proving that the norm of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space of dimension $ \geq 2$ is nowhere Fréchet differentiable. Moreover, we discuss some open problems on this topic.

On Daugavet indices of thickness

Inspired by R. Whitley's thickness index the last named author recently introduced the Daugavet index of thickness of Banach spaces. We continue the investigation of the behavior of this index and also consider two new versions of the Daugavet index of thickness, which helps us solve an open problem which connect the Daugavet indices with the Daugavet equation. Moreover, we will improve the formerly known estimates of the behavior of Daugavet index on direct sums of Banach spaces by establishing sharp bounds. As a consequence of our results we prove that, for every $0<δ<2$, there exists a Banach space where the infimum of the diameter of convex combinations of slices of the unit ball is exactly $δ$, solving an open question from the literature. Finally, we prove that an open question posed by Ivakhno in 2006 about the relation between the radius and diameter of slices has a negative answer.

Octahedral norms in duals and biduals of Lipschitz-free spaces

We continue with the study of octahedral norms in the context of spaces of Lipschitz functions and in their duals. First, we prove that the norm of $\mathcal F(M)^{**}$ is octahedral as soon as $M$ is unbounded or is not uniformly discrete. Further, we prove that a concrete sequence of uniformly discrete and bounded metric spaces $(K_m)$ satisfies that the norm of $\mathcal F(K_m)^{**}$ is octahedral for every $m$. Finally, we prove that if $X$ is an arbitrary Banach space and the norm of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ is octahedral, then the norm of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M,X^\ast)$ is octahedral. These results solve several open problems from the literature.

Points of differentiability of the norm in Lipschitz-free spaces

We consider convex series of molecules in Lipschitz-free spaces, i.e. elements of the form $μ=\sum_n λ_n \frac{δ_{x_n}-δ_{y_n}}{d(x_n,y_n)}$ such that $\|μ\|=\sum_n |λ_n |$. We characterise these elements in terms of geometric conditions on the points $x_n$, $y_n$ of the underlying metric space, and determine when they are points of Gâteaux differentiability of the norm. In particular, we show that Gâteaux and Fréchet differentiability are equivalent for finitely supported elements of Lipschitz-free spaces over uniformly discrete and bounded metric spaces, and that their tensor products with Gâteaux (resp. Fréchet) differentiable elements of a Banach space are Gâteaux (resp. Fréchet) differentiable in the corresponding projective tensor product.

Examples and applications of the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the density of the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which strongly attain their norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is actually a maximum). We present new and somehow counterintuitive examples, and we give some applications. First, we show that $\operatorname{SNA}(\mathbb T,Y)$ is not dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(\mathbb T,Y)$ for any Banach space $Y$, where $\mathbb T$ denotes the unit circle in the Euclidean plane. This provides the first example of a Gromov concave metric space (i.e.\ every molecule is a strongly exposed point of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space) for which the density does not hold. Next, we construct metric spaces $M$ satisfying that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,Y)$ regardless $Y$ but which contains an isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and so the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$ fails the Radon--Nikodým property, answering in the negative a posed question. Furthermore, an example $M$ can be produced failing all the previously known sufficient conditions to get the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps. Finally, among other applications, we prove that given a compact metric $M$ which does not contains any isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and a Banach space $Y$, if $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense, then $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ actually contains an open dense subset and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}=\overline{\mathrm{co}}(\operatorname{str-exp}(B_{\mathcal F(M)}))$. Further, we show that if $M$ is a boundedly compact metric space for which $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb R)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,\mathbb R)$, then the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space on $M$ is the closed convex hull of its strongly exposed points.

Some results on isometric composition operators on Lipschitz spaces

Given two metric spaces $M$ and $N$ we study, motivated by a question of N. Weaver, conditions under which an isometric composition operator $C_ϕ:\mathrm{Lip}_0(M)\longrightarrow \mathrm{Lip}_0(N)$ is isometric depending on the properties of $ϕ$. We obtain a complete characterisation of those operators $C_ϕ$ in terms of a property of the function $ϕ$ in the case that $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is the closed convex hull of its preserved extreme points. Also, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for $C_ϕ$ being isometric in the case that $M$ is geodesic.

Daugavet property in tensor product spaces

We study the Daugavet property in tensor products of Banach spaces. We show that $L_1(μ)\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon L_1(ν)$ has the Daugavet property when $μ$ and $ν$ are purely non-atomic measures. Also, we show that $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ has the Daugavet property provided $X$ and $Y$ are $L_1$-preduals with the Daugavet property, in particular spaces of continuous functions with this property. With the same tecniques, we also obtain consequences about roughness in projective tensor products as well as the Daugavet property of projective symmetric tensor products.

Strong diameter two property and convex combination of slices reaching the unit sphere

We characterise the class of those Banach spaces in which every convex combination of slices of the unit ball intersects the unit sphere as the class of those spaces in which every convex combination of slices of the unit ball contains two points at distance exactly two. Also, we study when the convex combinations of slices of the unit ball are relatively open or has non-empty relative interior for different topologies, studying the relationship between them and studying these properties for $L_{\infty}$-spaces and preduals of $L_1$-spaces.

On strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which (strongly) attain their Lipschitz norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is a maximum). Extending previous results, we prove that this set is not norm dense when $M$ is a length space (or local) or when $M$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}$ with positive Lebesgue measure, providing new examples which have very different topological properties than the previously known ones. On the other hand, we study the linear properties which are sufficient to get Lindenstrauss property A for the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ over $M$, and show that all of them actually provide the norm density of $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ in the space of all Lipschitz maps from $M$ to any Banach space $Y$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb{R})$ is weakly sequentially dense in the space of all Lipschitz functions for all metric spaces $M$. Finally, we show that the norm of the bidual space of $\mathcal{F}(M)$ is octahedral provided the metric space $M$ is discrete but not uniformly discrete or $M'$ is infinite.

Almost squareness and strong diameter two property in tensor product spaces

We study almost squareness and the strong diameter two property in the setting of projective (symmetric) tensor product. We prove that almost squareness is preserved by taking projective tensor product, providing non-trivial examples of ASQ projective tensor product spaces. Furthermore, we give sufficient conditions for a projective symmetric tensor product to have the strong diameter two property which extend most of the known results and provide new examples of such spaces with the strong diameter two property.

A characterisation of the Daugavet property in spaces of Lipschitz functions

We study the Daugavet property in the space of Lipschitz functions $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ for a complete metric space $M$. Namely we show that $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ has the Daugavet property if and only if $M$ is a length space. This condition also characterises the Daugavet property in the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$. Moreover, when $M$ is compact, we show that either $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the Daugavet property or its unit ball has a strongly exposed point. If $M$ is an infinite compact subset of a strictly convex Banach space then the Daugavet property of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ is equivalent to the convexity of $M$.

Extremal structure and Duality of Lipschitz free spaces

We analyse the relationship between different extremal notions in Lipschitz free spaces (strongly exposed, exposed, preserved extreme and extreme points). We prove in particular that every preserved extreme point of the unit ball is also a denting point. We also show in some particular cases that every extreme point is a molecule, and that a molecule is extreme whenever the two points, say $x$ and $y$, which define it satisfy that the metric segment $[x, y]$ only contains $x$ and $y$. The most notable among them is the case when the free space admits an isometric predual with some additional properties. As an application, we get some new consequences about norm-attainment in spaces of vector valued Lipschitz functions.

Diameter two properties and polyhedrality

We give two examples of polyhedral Banach spaces failing all the diameter two properties, showing that there is not any connection between polyhedrality and the diameter two properties.

Octahedral norms in tensor products of Banach spaces

We continue the investigation of the behaviour of octahedral norms in tensor products of Banach spaces. Firstly, we will prove the existence of a Banach space $Y$ such that the injective tensor products $l_1\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon Y$ and $L_1\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon Y$ both fail to have an octahedral norm, which solves two open problems from the literature. Secondly, we will show that in the presence of the metric approximation property octahedrality is preserved from a non-reflexive $L$-embedded Banach space taking projective tensor products with an arbitrary Banach space.

A characterisation of octahedrality in Lipschitz-free spaces

We characterise the octahedrality of Lipschitz-free space norm in terms of a new geometric property of the underlying metric space. We study the metric spaces with and without this property. Quite surprisingly, metric spaces without this property cannot embed isometrically into $\ell_1$ and similar Banach spaces.

Daugavet property and separability in Banach spaces

We give a characterisation of the separable Banach spaces with the Daugavet property which is applied to study the Daugavet property in the projective tensor product of an $L$-embedded space with another non-zero Banach space. The former characterisation also motivates the introduction of two indices related to the Daugavet property and a short study of them.
