LHC EFT WG Note: Precision matching of microscopic physics to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT)

This note gives an overview of the tools for the precision matching of ultraviolet theories to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop. Several semi- and fully automated codes are presented, as well as some supplementary codes for the basis conversion and the subsequent running and matching at low energies. A suggestion to collect information for cross-validations of current and future codes is made.

All-multiplicity amplitudes with four massive quarks and identical-helicity gluons

We explore the on-shell recursion for tree-level scattering amplitudes with massive spinning particles. Based on the factorization structure encoded in the same way by two different recursion relations, we conjecture an all-multiplicity formula for two gauged massive particles of arbitrary spin and any number of identical-helicity gluons. Specializing to quantum chromodynamics (QCD), we solve the on-shell recursion relations in the presence of two pairs of massive quarks and an arbitrary number of identical-helicity gluons. We find closed-form expressions for the two distinct families of color-ordered four-quark amplitudes, in which all gluons comprise a single color-adjacent set. We compare the efficiency of the numerical evaluation of the two resulting analytic formulae against a numerical implementation of the off-shell Berends-Giele recursion. We find the formulae for both amplitude families to be faster for large multiplicities, while the simpler of the two is actually faster for any number of external legs. Our analytic results are provided in a computer-readable format as two ancillary files.

Matchmakereft: automated tree-level and one-loop matching

We introduce matchmakereft, a fully automated tool to compute the tree-level and one-loop matching of arbitrary models onto arbitrary effective theories. Matchmakereft performs an off-shell matching, using diagrammatic methods and the background field method when gauge theories are involved. The large redundancy inherent to the off-shell matching together with explicit gauge invariance offers a significant number of non-trivial checks of the results provided. These results are given in the physical basis but several intermediate results, including the matching in the Green basis before and after canonical normalization, are given for flexibility and the possibility of further cross-checks. As a non-trivial example we provide the complete matching in the Warsaw basis up to one loop of an extension of the Standard Model with a charge -1 vector-like lepton singlet. Matchmakereft has been built with generality, flexibility and efficiency in mind. These ingredients allow matchmakereft to have many applications beyond the matching between models and effective theories. Some of these applications include the one-loop renormalization of arbitrary theories (including the calculation of the one-loop renormalization group equations for arbitrary theories); the translation between different Green bases for a fixed effective theory or the check of (off-shell) linear independence of the operators in an effective theory. All these applications are performed in a fully automated way by matchmakereft.

Tree-level splitting amplitudes for a gluon into four collinear partons

We compute in conventional dimensional regularisation the tree-level splitting amplitudes for a gluon parent which splits into four collinear partons. This is part of the universal infrared behaviour of the QCD scattering amplitudes at next- to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in the strong coupling constant. Combined with our earlier results for a quark parent, this completes the set of tree-level splitting amplitudes required at this order. We also study iterated collinear limits where a subset of the four collinear partons become themselves collinear.

Tree-level splitting amplitudes for a quark into four collinear partons

We compute in conventional dimensional regularisation the tree-level splitting amplitudes for a quark parent in the limit where four partons become collinear to each other. This is part of the universal infrared behaviour of the QCD scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (${\rm N^3LO}$) in the strong coupling constant. Further, we consider the iterated limit when $m'$ massless partons become collinear to each other within a bigger set of $m$ collinear partons, as well as the limits when one gluon or a $q\bar{q}$ pair or two gluons become soft within a set of $m$ collinear partons.

iHixs 2 - Inclusive Higgs Cross Sections

We present a new release of the program iHixs. This easy-to-use tool allows to derive state of the art predictions for the inclusive production cross section of a Higgs boson at hadron colliders in the gluon fusion production mode. This includes the most up-to-date corrections in perturbative QCD and electro-weak theory, effects due to finite quark masses as well as an option to perform threshold resummation. In particular, exact perturbative QCD corrections through N3LO are included in the heavy top quark effective theory. Furthermore, iHixs contains automatic routines that allow to assess residual uncertainties on the prediction for the Higgs boson production cross section according to well established standard definitions. iHixs can be obtained from https://github.com/dulatf/ihixs .

CP-even scalar boson production via gluon fusion at the LHC

In view of the searches at the LHC for scalar particle resonances in addition to the 125 GeV Higgs boson, we present the cross section for a CP-even scalar produced via gluon fusion at N3LO in perturbative QCD assuming that it couples directly to gluons in an effective theory approach. We refine our prediction by taking into account the possibility that the scalar couples to the top-quark and computing the corresponding contributions through NLO in perturbative QCD. We assess the theoretical uncertainties of the cross section due to missing higher-order QCD effects and we provide the necessary information for obtaining the cross section value and uncertainty from our results in specific scenarios beyond the Standard Model. We also give detailed results for the case of a 750 GeV scalar, which will be the subject of intense experimental studies.

High precision determination of the gluon fusion Higgs boson cross-section at the LHC

We present the most precise value for the Higgs boson cross-section in the gluon-fusion production mode at the LHC. Our result is based on a perturbative expansion through N$^3$LO in QCD, in an effective theory where the top-quark is assumed to be infinitely heavy, while all other Standard Model quarks are massless. We combine this result with QCD corrections to the cross-section where all finite quark-mass effects are included exactly through NLO. In addition, electroweak corrections and the first corrections in the inverse mass of the top-quark are incorporated at three loops. We also investigate the effects of threshold resummation, both in the traditional QCD framework and following a SCET approach, which resums a class of $π^2$ contributions to all orders. We assess the uncertainty of the cross-section from missing higher-order corrections due to both perturbative QCD effects beyond N$^3$LO and unknown mixed QCD-electroweak effects. In addition, we determine the sensitivity of the cross-section to the choice of parton distribution function (PDF) sets and to the parametric uncertainty in the strong coupling constant and quark masses. For a Higgs mass of $m_H = 125~{\rm GeV}$ and an LHC center-of-mass energy of $13~{\rm TeV}$, our best prediction for the gluon fusion cross-section is \[ σ= 48.58\,{\rm pb} {}^{+2.22\, {\rm pb}\, (+4.56\%)}_{-3.27\, {\rm pb}\, (-6.72\%)} \mbox{ (theory)} \pm 1.56 \,{\rm pb}\, (3.20\%) \mbox{ (PDF+$α_s$)} \]

The fully differential decay rate of a Higgs boson to bottom-quarks at NNLO in QCD

The decay of a light Higgs boson to bottom quarks is dominant and can be exploited for the discovery of the Higgs particle and the measurement of its properties at the LHC and future collider experiments. We perform a first computation of the fully differential decay at next-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We employ a novel method of non-linear mappings for the treatment of singularities in the radiative processes which contribute to the decay width. This constitutes the first physical application of the method.

NNLO QCD corrections to $pp \to γ^* γ^*$ in the large $N_F$ limit

We compute the NNLO QCD corrections for the hadroproduction of a pair of off-shell photons in the limit of a large number of quark flavors. We perform a reduction of the two-loop amplitude to master integrals and calculate the latter analytically as a Laurent series in the dimensional regulator using modern integration methods. Real radiation corrections are evaluated numerically with a direct subtraction of infrared limits which we cast in a simple factorized form. The results presented here constitute a gauge invariant part of the full NNLO corrections but are not necessarily dominant. We view this calculation as a step towards a complete computation. Our partial corrections to the total cross-section are about $1\%-3\%$ and vary with the virtuality of the two off-shell photons.

Scale dependence and collinear subtraction terms for Higgs production in gluon fusion at N3LO

The full, explicit, scale dependence of the inclusive N3LO cross section for single Higgs hadroproduction is obtained by calculating the convolutions of collinear splitting kernels with lower-order partonic cross sections. We provide results for all convolutions of splitting kernels and lower-order partonic cross sections to the order in epsilon needed for the full N3LO computation, as well as their expansions around the soft limit. We also discuss the size of the total scale uncertainty at N3LO that can be anticipated with existing information.

The fully differential hadronic production of a Higgs boson via bottom quark fusion at NNLO

The fully differential computation of the hadronic production cross section of a Higgs boson via bottom quarks is presented at NNLO in QCD. Several differential distributions with their corresponding scale uncertainties are presented for the 8 TeV LHC. This is the first application of the method of non-linear mappings for NNLO differential calculations at hadron colliders.

Inclusive Higgs boson cross-section for the LHC at 8 TeV

We present the inclusive Higgs boson cross-section at the LHC with collision energy of 8 TeV. Our predictions are obtained using our publicly available program iHixs which incorporates NNLO QCD corrections and electroweak corrections. We review the convergence of the QCD perturbative expansion at this new energy and examine the impact of finite Higgs width effects. We also study the impact of different parton distribution functions on the cross-section. We present tables with the cross-section values and estimates for their uncertainty due to uncalculated higher orders in the perturbative expansion and parton densities.

Total cross-section for Higgs boson hadroproduction with anomalous Standard Model interactions

We present a new program (iHixs) which computes the inclusive Higgs boson cross-section at hadron colliders. It incorporates QCD corrections through NNLO, real and virtual electroweak corrections, mixed QCD-electroweak corrections, quark-mass effects through NLO in QCD, and finite width effects for the Higgs boson and heavy quarks. iHixs can be used to obtain the most precise cross-section values in fixed order perturbation theory in the Standard Model. In addition, it allows for a consistent evaluation of the cross-section in modified Higgs boson sectors with anomalous Yukawa and electroweak interactions as required in extensions of the Standard Model. iHixs is interfaced with the LHAPDF library and can be used with all available NNLO sets of parton distribution functions.

Higgs production cross-section in a Standard Model with four generations at the LHC

We present theoretical predictions for the Higgs boson production cross-section via gluon fusion at the LHC in a Standard Model with four generations. We include QCD corrections through NLO retaining the full dependence on the quark masses, and the NNLO corrections in the heavy quark effective theory approximation. We also include electroweak corrections through three loops. Electroweak and bottom-quark contributions are suppressed in comparison to the Standard Model with three generations.

On the factorization of overlapping singularities at NNLO

Real and virtual corrections in NNLO QCD require multi-dimensional integrals with overlapping singularities. We first review ideas and methods which have been proposed for performing such computations. We then present a new method for the factorization of overlapping singularities based on non-linear integral transformations. We apply this method for the evaluation of all integral topologies which appear in double real radiation corrections in cross-section calculations for the production of a heavy system at hadron colliders. Finally, we demonstrate with typical examples that two-loop virtual corrections are amenable to the same method.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to t-tbar-Z production at the LHC

We present a calculation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the scattering process pp \to t tbar Z. This channel will be used to measure the t tbar Z electroweak couplings at the Large Hadron Collider. These couplings cannot be directly measured in current experiments. To obtain these results, we utilize a novel, completely numerical approach to performing higher order QCD calculations. We find that for reasonable values of the renormalization and factorization scales the QCD corrections increase the leading order result by 35 percent, while reducing the theoretical error arising from uncalculated higher order corrections to approximately 10 percent.
