Probing the spin polarization of an Anderson impurity

We report spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of an Anderson impurity system in MoS$_{2}$ mirror twin boundaries, where both the quantum confined impurity state and the Kondo resonance resulting from the interaction with the substrate are accessible. Using a spin-polarized tip, we observe magnetic field induced changes in the peak heights of the Anderson impurity states as well as in the magnetic field-split Kondo resonance. Quantitative comparison with numerical renormalization group calculations provides evidence of the notable spin polarization of the spin-resolved impurity spectral function under the influence of a magnetic field. Moreover, we extract the field and temperature dependence of the impurity magnetization from the differential conductance measurements and demonstrate that this exhibits the universality and asymptotic freedom of the $S=1/2$ Kondo effect. This work shows that mirror twin boundaries can be used as a testing ground for theoretical predictions on quantum impurity models.

Gauge Field Dynamics in Multilayer Kitaev Spin Liquids

The Kitaev spin liquid realizes an emergent static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field with vison excitations coupled to Majorana fermions. We consider Kitaev models stacked on top of each other, weakly coupled by Heisenberg interaction $\propto J_\perp$. This inter-layer coupling breaks the integrability of the model and makes the gauge fields dynamic. \new{Conservation laws and topology keeps single visons immobile. However, an inter-layer vison pairs can hop with a hopping amplitude linear in $J_\perp$ confined to the layer, but their motion is strongly influenced by the type of stacking. For AA stacking, an interlayer pair has a two-dimensional motion but for the AB or ABC stacking, sheet conservation laws restrict its motion to a one-dimensional channel within the plane. For all stackings, an intra-layer vison-pair is constrained to move out-of-plane only.} Depending on the anisotropy of the Kitaev couplings $K_x, K_y, K_z$, the intra-layer vison pairs can display either coherent tunnelling or purely incoherent hopping. When a magnetic field opens a gap for Majorana fermions, there exist two types of intra-layer vison pairs - a bosonic and a fermionic one. Only the bosonic pair obtains a hopping rate linear in $J_\perp$. We use our results to identify the leading instabilities of the spin liquid phase induced by the inter-layer coupling.

Nonequilibrium Criticality at the Onset of Time-Crystalline Order

We explore the phase transitions at the onset of time-crystalline order in $O(N)$ models driven out-of-equilibrium. The spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry and its Goldstone mode are captured by an effective description with $O(N)\times SO(2)$ symmetry. Using the renormalization group and the $ε=4-d$ expansion in a leading two-loop analysis, we identify a new non-equilibrium universality class. Strikingly, it controls the long-distance physics no matter how small the microscopic breaking of equilibrium conditions is. The $O(N=2)\times SO(2)$ symmetry group is realized for magnon condensation in pumped yttirum iron garnet (YIG) films and in exciton-polariton systems with a polarization degree of freedom.

Nonlinear transport due to magnetic-field-induced flat bands in the nodal-line semimetal ZrTe5

The Dirac material ZrTe$_5$ at very low carrier density was recently found to be a nodal-line semimetal, where ultra-flat bands are expected to emerge in magnetic fields parallel to the nodal-line plane. Here we report that in very low carrier-density samples of ZrTe$_5$, when the current and the magnetic field are both along the crystallographic $a$ axis, the current-voltage characteristics presents a pronounced nonlinearity which tends to saturate in the ultra quantum limit. The magnetic-field dependence of the nonlinear coefficient is well explained by the Boltzmann theory for flat-band transport, and we argue that this nonlinear transport is likely due to the combined effect of flat bands and charge puddles, the latter appear due to very low carrier densities.

Generalized Higgs mechanism in long-range interacting quantum systems

The physics of long-range interacting quantum systems is currently living through a renaissance driven by the fast progress in quantum simulators. In these systems many paradigms of statistical physics do not apply and also the universal long-wavelength physics gets substantially modified by the presence of long-ranged forces. Here we explore the low-energy excitations of several long-range interacting quantum systems, including spin models and interacting Bose gases, in the ordered phase associated with the spontaneous breaking of U(1) and SU(2) symmetries. Instead of the expected Goldstone modes, we find three qualitatively different regimes, depending on the range of the interaction. In one of these regimes the Goldstone modes are gapped, via a generalization of the Higgs mechanism. Moreover, we show how this effect is realized in current experiments with ultracold atomic gases in optical cavities.

Decay rates of almost strong modes in Floquet spin chains beyond Fermi's Golden Rule

The stability and dynamics of almost strong zero and $π$ modes in weakly non-integrable Floquet spin chains are investigated. Such modes can also be viewed as localized Majorana modes at the edge of a topological superconductor. Perturbation theory in the strength of integrability-breaking interaction $J_z$ is employed to estimate the decay rates of these modes, and compared to decay rates obtained from exact diagonalization. The structure of the perturbation theory and thus the lifetime of the modes is governed by the conservation of quasi-energy modulo $2 π/T$, where $T$ is the period of the Floquet system. If the quasi-energies of minimally $4 n-1$ quasi-particles adds up to zero (or $π/T$ for a $π$ mode), the lifetime is proportional to $1/J_z^{2 n}$. Thus the lifetime is sensitively controlled by the width of the single-particle Floquet bands. For regimes where the decay rates are quadratic in $J_z$, an analytic expression for the decay rate in terms of an infinite temperature autocorrelation function of the integrable model is derived, and shown to agree well with exact diagonalization.

Non-integrable Floquet Ising model with duality twisted boundary conditions

Results are presented for a Floquet Ising chain with duality twisted boundary conditions, taking into account the role of weak integrability breaking in the form of four-fermion interactions. In the integrable case, a single isolated Majorana zero mode exists which is a symmetry in the sense that it commutes both with the Floquet unitary and the $Z_2$ symmetry of the Floquet unitary. When integrability is weakly broken, both in a manner so as to preserve or break the $Z_2$ symmetry, the Majorana zero mode is still found to be conserved for small system sizes. This is reflected in the dynamics of an infinite temperature autocorrelation function which, after an initial transient that is controlled by the strength of the integrability breaking term, approaches a plateau that does not decay with time. The height of the plateau agrees with a numerically constructed conserved quantity, and is found to decrease with increasing system sizes. It is argued that the existence of the plateau and its vanishing for larger system sizes is closely related to a localization-delocalization transition in Fock space triggered by the integrability-breaking interactions.

Modulated Kondo screening along magnetic mirror twin boundaries in monolayer MoS2 on graphene

A many-body resonance emerges at the Fermi energy when an electron bath screens the magnetic moment of a half-filled impurity level. This Kondo effect, originally introduced to explain the abnormal resistivity behavior in bulk magnetic alloys, has been realized in many quantum systems over the past decades, such as quantum dots, quantum point contacts, nanowires, single-molecule transistors, heavy-fermion lattices, down to adsorbed single atoms. Here we describe a unique Kondo system which allows us to experimentally resolve the spectral function consisting of impurity levels and Kondo resonance in a large Kondo temperature range, as well as their spatial modulation. Our experimental Kondo system, based on a discrete half-filled quantum confined state within a MoS2 grain boundary, in conjunction with numerical renormalization group calculations, enables us to test the predictive power of the Anderson model which is the basis of the microscopic understanding of Kondo physics.

Network of chiral one-dimensional channels and localized states emerging in a moiré system

Moiré systems provide a highly tunable platform for engineering band structures and exotic correlated phases. Here, we theoretically study a model for a single layer of graphene subject to a smooth moiré electrostatic potential, induced by an insulating substrate layer. For sufficiently large moiré unit cells, we find that ultra-flat bands coexist with a triangular network of chiral one-dimensional (1D) channels. These channels mediate an effective interaction between localized modes with spin-, orbital- and valley degrees of freedom emerging from the flat bands. The form of the interaction reflects the chiralilty and 1D nature of the network. We study this interacting model within an $SU(4)$ mean-field theory, semi-classical Monte-Carlo simulations, and an $SU(4)$ spin-wave theory, focusing on commensurate order stabilized by local two-site and chiral three-site interactions. By tuning a gate voltage, one can trigger a non-coplanar phase characterized by a peculiar coexistence of three different types of order: ferromagnetic spin order in one valley, non-coplanar chiral spin order in the other valley, and 120$^\circ$ order in the remaining spin and valley-mixed degrees of freedom. Quantum and classical fluctuations have qualitatively different effects on the observed phases and can, for example, create a finite spin-chirality purely via fluctuation effects.

First Order Quantum Phase Transition in the Hybrid Metal-Mott Insulator Transition Metal Dichalcogenide 4Hb-TaS2

Coupling together distinct correlated and topologically non-trivial electronic phases of matter can potentially induce novel electronic orders and phase transitions among them. Transition metal dichalcogenide compounds serve as a bedrock for exploration of such hybrid systems. They host a variety of exotic electronic phases and their Van der Waals nature enables to admix them, either by exfoliation and stacking or by stoichiometric growth, and thereby induce novel correlated complexes. Here we investigate the compound 4Hb-TaS$_2$ that interleaves the Mott-insulating state of 1T-TaS$_2$ and the putative spin liquid it hosts together with the metallic state of 2H-TaS$_2$ and the low temperature superconducting phase it harbors. We reveal a thermodynamic phase diagram that hosts a first order quantum phase transition between a correlated Kondo cluster state and a flat band state in which the Kondo cluster becomes depleted. We demonstrate that this intrinsic transition can be induced by an electric field and temperature as well as by manipulation of the interlayer coupling with the probe tip, hence allowing to reversibly toggle between the Kondo cluster and the flat band states. The phase transition is manifested by a discontinuous change of the complete electronic spectrum accompanied by hysteresis and low frequency noise. We find that the shape of the transition line in the phase diagram is determined by the local compressibility and the entropy of the two electronic states. Our findings set such heterogeneous structures as an exciting platform for systematic investigation and manipulation of Mott-metal transitions and strongly correlated phases and quantum phase transitions therein.

Experimental observation of one-dimensional motion of interstitial skyrmion in FeGe

The interplay between dimensionality and topology manifests in magnetism via both exotic texture morphology and novel dynamics. A free magnetic skyrmion exhibits the skyrmion Hall effect under electric currents. Once it is confined in one-dimensional (1D) channels, the skyrmion Hall effect would be suppressed, and the current-driven skyrmion speed should be boosted by the non-adiabatic spin transfer torque \b{eta}. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that stripes of a spatially modulated spin helix serve as natural 1D channels to restrict skyrmion. Using FeGe as a benchmark, an interstitial skyrmion is created by geometry notch and further moves steadily without the skyrmion Hall effect. The slope of the current-velocity curve for 1D skyrmion is enhanced almost by an order of magnitude owing to a large \b{eta} in FeGe. This feature is also observed in other topological defects. Utilizing the 1D skyrmion dynamics would be a highly promising route to implement topological spintronic devices.

Dynamics of visons and thermal Hall effect in perturbed Kitaev models

A vison is an excitation of the Kitaev spin liquid which carries a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge flux. While immobile in the pure Kitaev model, it becomes a dynamical degree of freedom in the presence of perturbations. We study an isolated vison in the isotropic Kitaev model perturbed by a small external magnetic field $h$, an offdiagonal exchange interactions $Γ$ and a Heisenberg coupling $J$. In the ferromagnetic Kitaev model, the dressed vison obtains a dispersion linear in $Γ$ and $h$ and a fully universal low-$T$ mobility, $μ=6 v_m^2/T^{2}$, where $v_m$ is the velocity of Majorana fermions. In contrast, in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model interference effects suppress the coherent propagation and an incoherent Majorana-assisted hopping leads to a $T$-independent mobility. The motion of a single vison due to Heisenberg interactions is strongly suppressed for both signs of the Kitaev coupling. Vison bands in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev models can be topological and may lead to a characteristic features in thermal Hall effects in Kitaev materials.

Imaging the ultrafast coherent control of a skyrmion crystal

Exotic magnetic textures emerging from the subtle interplay between thermodynamic and topological fluctuation have attracted intense interest due to their potential applications in spintronic devices. Recent advances in electron microscopy have enabled the imaging of random photo-generated individual skyrmions. However, their deterministic and dynamical manipulation is hampered by the chaotic nature of such fluctuations and the intrinsically irreversible switching between different minima in the magnetic energy landscape. Here, we demonstrate a method to coherently control the rotation of a skyrmion crystal by discrete amounts at speeds which are much faster than previously observed. By employing circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses with an energy below the bandgap of the Mott insulator Cu2OSeO3, we excite a collective magnon mode via the inverse Faraday effect. This triggers coherent magnetic oscillations that directly control the rotation of a skyrmion crystal imaged by cryo-Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy. The manipulation of topological order via ultrafast laser pulses shown here can be used to engineer fast spin-based logical devices.

Stability of Floquet Majorana box qubits

In one-dimensional topological superconductors driven periodically with the frequency $ω$, two types of topological edge modes may appear, the well-known Majorana zero mode and a Floquet Majorana mode located at the quasi-energy $\hbar ω/2$. We investigate two Josephson-coupled topological quantum wires in the presence of Coulomb interactions, forming a so-called Majorana box qubit. An oscillating gate voltage can induce Floquet Majorana modes in both wires. This allows encoding 3 qubits in a sector with fixed electron parity. If such a system is prepared by increasing the amplitude of oscillations adiabatically, it is inherently unstable as interactions resonantly create quasi particles. This can be avoided by using instead a protocol where the oscillation frequency is increased slowly. In this case, one can find a parameter regime where the system remains stable.

Gigantic magnetochiral anisotropy in the topological semimetal ZrTe5

Topological materials with broken inversion symmetry can give rise to nonreciprocal responses, such as the current rectification controlled by magnetic fields via magnetochiral anisotropy. Bulk nonreciprocal responses usually stem from relativistic corrections and are always very small. Here we report our discovery that ZrTe5 crystals in proximity to a topological quantum phase transition present gigantic magnetochiral anisotropy, which is the largest ever observed to date. We argue that a very low carrier density, inhomogeneities, and a torus-shaped Fermi surface induced by breaking of inversion symmetry in a Dirac material are central to explain this extraordinary property.

Thermal Hall response: violation of gravitational analogues and Einstein relations

The response of solids to temperature gradients is often described in terms of a gravitational analogue: the effect of a space-dependent temperature is modeled using a space dependent metric. We investigate the validity of this approach in describing the bulk response of quantum Hall states and other gapped chiral topological states. To this end, we consider the prototypical Haldane model in two different cases of (i) a space-dependent electrostatic potential and gravitational potential and (ii) a space-dependent temperature and chemical potential imprinted by a weak coupling to non-interacting electron baths and phonons. We find that the thermal analogue is \textit{invalid}; while a space dependent gravitational potential induces transverse energy currents proportional to the third derivative of the gravitational potential, the response to an analogous temperature profile vanishes in limit of weak coupling to the thermal bath. Similarly, the Einstein relation, the analogy between the electrostatic potential and the internal chemical potential, is not valid in such a setup.

Detection of Topological Spin Textures via Non-Linear Magnetic Responses

Topologically non-trivial spin textures, such as skyrmions and dislocations, display emergent electrodynamics and can be moved by spin currents over macroscopic distances. These unique properties and their nanoscale size make them excellent candidates for the development of next-generation logic gates, race-track memory, and artificial synapses for neuromorphic computing. A major challenge for these applications - and the investigation of nanoscale magnetic structures in general - is the realization of detection schemes that provide high resolution and sensitivity. We study the local magnetic properties of disclinations, dislocations, and domain walls in FeGe, and reveal a pronounced response that distinguishes the individual spin textures from the helimagnetic background. Combination of magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations links the non-linear response to the local magnetic susceptibility. Based on the findings, we propose a read-out scheme using superconducting micro-coils, representing an innovative approach for detecting topologically non-trivial spin textures and domain walls in device-relevant geometries.

Archimedean Screw in Driven Chiral Magnets

In chiral magnets a magnetic helix forms where the magnetization winds around a propagation vector $\mathbf{q}$. We show theoretically that a magnetic field $\mathbf{B}_{\perp}(t) \perp \mathbf{q}$, which is spatially homogeneous but oscillating in time, induces a net rotation of the texture around $\mathbf{q}$. This rotation is reminiscent of the motion of an Archimedean screw and is equivalent to a translation with velocity $v_{\text{screw}}$ parallel to $\mathbf{q}$. Due to the coupling to a Goldstone mode, this non-linear effect arises for arbitrarily weak $\mathbf{B}_{\perp}(t) $ with $v_{\text{screw}} \propto |\mathbf{B}_{\perp}|^2$ as long as pinning by disorder is absent. The effect is resonantly enhanced when internal modes of the helix are excited and the sign of $v_{\text{screw}}$ can be controlled either by changing the frequency or the polarization of $\mathbf{B}_{\perp}(t)$. The Archimedean screw can be used to transport spin and charge and thus the screwing motion is predicted to induce a voltage parallel to $\mathbf{q}$. Using a combination of numerics and Floquet spin wave theory, we show that the helix becomes unstable upon increasing $\mathbf{B}_{\perp}$ forming a `time quasicrystal' which oscillates in space and time for moderately strong drive.
