Azimuthal correlations from transverse momentum conservation and possible local parity violation

We analytically calculate the contribution of transverse momentum conservation to the azimuthal correlations that have been proposed as signals for possible local strong parity violation and recently measured in heavy ion collisions. These corrections are of the order of the inverse of the total final state particle multiplicity and thus are of the same order as the observed signal. The corrections contribute with the same sign to both like-sign and opposite-sign pair correlations. Their dependence on the momentum is in qualitative agreement with the measurements by the STAR collaboration, while the pseudorapidity dependence differs from the data.

On the Charge Separation Effect in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we discuss alternative means of measuring the possible presence of local parity violation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We focus on the phenomenon of charge separation and introduce the charged dipole vector $\hat{Q}^c_1$, which will measure the charge separation on an event-by-event basis. Using Monte Carlo events, we demonstrate the method and its discriminating power. In particular we show that such an analysis will reveal the strength of charge separation effect and its azimuthal correlation with the reaction plane. We further show that our proposed method may be able to distinguish between the actual charge separation effect and effects due to certain two particle correlations. The connection to present measurements based on particle correlations is discussed.

Remarks on possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions

In this note we discuss some observations concerning the possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions recently announced by the STAR Collaboration. Our results can be summarized as follows (i) the measured correlations for same charge pairs are mainly in-plain and not out of plane, (ii) if there is a parity violating component it is large and, surprisingly, of the same magnitude as the background, and (iii) the observed dependence of the signal on the transverse momentum (p_t) is consistent with a soft boost in p_t and thus in line with expectations from the proposed chiral magnetic effect.

Forward-backward multiplicity fluctuations in heavy nuclei collisions in the wounded nucleon model

We use the wounded nucleon model to study the forward-backward multiplicity fluctuations measured by the PHOBOS Collaboration in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The enhancement of forward-backward fluctuations in Au+Au collisions with respect to the elementary p+p interactions is in this model explained by the asymmetric shape of the pseudorapidity density of produced particles from a single wounded nucleon and the fluctuations of the number of wounded nucleons in the colliding nuclei. The wounded nucleon model describes these experimental data better than the HIJING, AMPT or UrQMD models do.

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations in the wounded nucleon model

The forward-backward multiplicity correlation strength is calculated for arbitrary nucleus-nucleus collision in the framework of the wounded nucleon model. Discussion of our results in the context of the recent STAR data in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s}=200 GeV is presented. It is suggested that the observed (i) growth of the correlation coefficient with centrality and (ii) approximately flat pseudorapidity dependence of the correlation strength for central collisions are due to the fluctuations of the number of wounded nucleons at a given centrality bin.

Long-range multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions

The forward-backward long-range multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions are investigated in the model with two independent sources of particles: one left- and one right-moving wounded nucleon. A good agreement with the UA5 collaboration proton-antiproton data at the c.m. energy of 200 GeV is observed. For comparison the model with only one source of particles is also discussed.

Measurement of asymmetric component in proton-proton collisions

It is argued that a standard measurement of multiplicities in proton-proton collisions is sufficient to construct a single nucleon fragmentation function. A proposed method is based on measurement of mean values of produced particles and pairs of particles in symmetric and asymmetric bins

The diquark and elastic pion-proton scattering at high energies

Small momentum transfer elastic pion-proton cross-section at high energies is calculated assuming the proton is composed of two constituents, a quark and a diquark. We find that it is possible to fit very precisely the data when (i) the pion acts as a single entity (no constituent quark structure) and (ii) the diquark is rather large, comparable to the size of the proton.

Heavy ion collisions in the used nucleon model

It is shown that recently proposed by R.J. Glauber the used nucleon model combined with the assumption that the nucleon consists of two constituents (a quark and a diquark) describes well the PHOBOS data on particle production at midrapidity.

Remark on double diffractive chi meson production

The double pomeron exchange contributions to the central inclusive and exclusive chi_c0 and chi_b0 mesons production in the Bialas-Landshoff approach are calculated. We find the model to be consistent with the preliminary CDF upper limit on double diffractive exclusive chi_c0 production cross section.

Exclusive Higgs and dijet production by double pomeron exchange. The CDF upper limits

We use as a starting point the original, central inclusive Bialas-Landshoff model for Higgs and dijet production by a double pomeron exchange in pp collisions. Next we propose the simple extension of this model to the exclusive processes. We find the extended model to be consistent with the CDF Run I, II upper limits for double diffractive exclusive dijet production. The predictions for the exclusive Higgs boson production cross sections at the Tevatron and the LHC energies are also presented.

Central inclusive dijets production by double pomeron exchange. Comparison with the CDF results

Using the Landshoff-Nachtmann model of the pomeron, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of gluon jets produced by double pomeron exchange in pp collisions are calculated. The comparison with the CDF Run I results on the central inclusive dijets production cross sections is performed. We find the model to give correct order of magnitude for the measured cross sections.
