Renormalisation of IR divergences and holography in de Sitter

We formulate a renormalisation procedure for IR divergences of tree-level in-in late-time de Sitter correlators. These divergences are due to the infinite volume of spacetime and are analogous to the divergences that appear in AdS dealt with by holographic renormalisation. Regulating the theory using dimensional regularisation, we show that one can remove all infinities by adding local counterterms at the future boundary of dS in the Schwinger-Keldysh path integral. The counterterms amount to renormalising the late-time bulk field. We frame the discussion in terms of bulk scalar fields in dS, using tree-level correlators of massless and conformal scalars for illustration. The relation to AdS via analytic continuation is discussed, and we show that different versions of the analytic continuation appearing in the literature are equivalent to each other. In AdS, one needs to add counterterms that are related to conformal anomalies, and also to renormalise the source part of the bulk field. The analytic continuation to dS projects out the traditional AdS counterterms, and links the renormalisation of the sources to the renormalisation of the late-time bulk field. We use these results to establish holographic formulae that relate tree-level dS in-in correlators to CFT correlators at up to four points, and we provide two proofs: one using the connection between the dS wavefunction and the partition function of the dual CFT, and a second by direct evaluation of the in-in correlators using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. The renormalisation of the bulk IR divergences is mapped by these formulae to UV renormalisation of the dual CFT via local counterterms, providing structural support for a possible duality. We also recast the regulated holographic formulae in terms of the AdS amplitudes of shadow fields, but show that this relation breaks down when renormalisation is required.

Handbook of derivative AdS amplitudes

In the 2022 study, together with Paul McFadden and Kostas Skenderis, I analyzed tree-level 3- and 4-point Witten diagrams (amplitudes) of scalar operators in anti-de Sitter space in momentum space. This paper constitutes its extension to Witten diagrams with bulk interactions involving spacetime derivatives. In $d = 3$ boundary dimensions the Witten diagrams involving conformally coupled and massless scalars can be evaluated in closed form. Such cases are of interest in holographic cosmology and correspond to dual operators of conformal dimensions $\Delta = 2$ and $3$ respectively. I present explicit formulae for all such amplitudes and provide a Mathematica package serving as the repository of all the results. I discuss renormalization issues and show that, contrary to the expectation, even finite correlators may acquire non-trivial renormalization effects.

Wormholes, geons, and the illusion of the tensor product

In this paper I argue that the Hilbert space of states of a holographic, traversable wormhole does not factorize into the tensor product of the boundary Hilbert spaces. After presenting the general argument I analyze two examples: the scalar sectors of the BTZ geon and the AdS$_2$ eternal wormhole. Utilizing real-time holography I derive the Hilbert spaces, identify the dual states and evaluate correlation functions. I show that the number of peculiarities associated with the wormhole and black hole physics emerges once the factorization is \textit{a priori} assumed. This includes null states and null operators, highly entangled vacuum states and the cross-boundary interactions all emerging as avatars of non-factorization.

A handbook of holographic 4-point functions

We present a comprehensive discussion of tree-level holographic $4$-point functions of scalar operators in momentum space. We show that each individual Witten diagram satisfies the conformal Ward identities on its own and is thus a valid conformal correlator. When the $\beta = \Delta - d/2$ are half-integral, with $\Delta$ the dimensions of the operators and $d$ the spacetime dimension, the Witten diagrams can be evaluated in closed form and we present explicit formulae for the case $d=3$ and $\Delta=2,3$. These correlators require renormalization, which we carry out explicitly, and lead to new conformal anomalies and beta functions. Correlators of operators of different dimension may be linked via weight-shifting operators, which allow new correlators to be generated from given `seed' correlators. We present a new derivation of weight-shifting operators in momentum space and uncover several subtleties associated with their use: such operators map exchange diagrams to a linear combination of exchange and contact diagrams, and special care must be taken when renormalization is required.

Breaking the spell of the tensor product

In this essay I argue that the Hilbert space of states dual to a traversable wormhole is smaller than the tensor product of the independent Hilbert spaces of the boundary field theories. From the point of view of semiclassical physics, the decrease in the number of states is perceived as an emergent, non-local interaction stabilizing the wormhole. This presents new possibilities for models of radiating black holes and raises questions about results established under the spell of the tensor product.

Consistency of supersymmetric 't Hooft anomalies

We consider recent claims that supersymmetry is anomalous in the presence of a R-symmetry anomaly. We revisit arguments that such an anomaly in supersymmetry can be removed and write down an explicit counterterm that accomplishes it. Removal of the supersymmetry anomaly requires enlarging the corresponding current multiplet. As a consequence the Ward identities for other symmetries that are already anomalous acquire extra terms. This procedure can only be impeded when the choice of current multiplet is forced. We show how Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are modified when the anomaly is removed. Finally we check that the modified Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are satisfied, and supersymmetry unbroken, in an explicit one loop computation using Pauli-Villars regulators. To this end we comment on how to use Pauli-Villars to regulate correlators of components of (super)current multiplets in a manifestly supersymmetric way.

Conformal correlators as simplex integrals in momentum space

We find the general solution of the conformal Ward identities for scalar $n$-point functions in momentum space and in general dimension. The solution is given in terms of integrals over $(n-1)$-simplices in momentum space. The $n$ operators are inserted at the $n$ vertices of the simplex, and the momenta running between any two vertices of the simplex are the integration variables. The integrand involves an arbitrary function of momentum-space cross ratios constructed from the integration variables, while the external momenta enter only via momentum conservation at each vertex. Correlators where the function of cross ratios is a monomial exhibit a remarkable recursive structure where $n$-point functions are built in terms of $(n-1)$-point functions. To illustrate our discussion, we derive the simplex representation of $n$-point contact Witten diagrams in a holographic conformal field theory. This can be achieved through both a recursive method, as well as an approach based on the star-mesh transformation of electrical circuit theory. The resulting expression for the function of cross ratios involves $(n-2)$ integrations, which is an improvement (when $n>4$) relative to the Mellin representation that involves $n(n-3)/2$ integrations.

Wormholes from two-sided $T \bar{T}$-deformation

We introduce a new coupling between stress tensors of the CFTs living on the two boundaries of the BTZ black hole. Similar to the $T \bar{T}$-deformation, the system exhibits universal properties and is solvable. The resulting geometry is an extreme case of a wormhole with the right and left BTZ wedges glued together along the horizons. We show that the geometry is realized by uniform shock waves emanating from both asymptotic boundaries. The construction has profound implications for the structure of the Hilbert space of states of the dual QFT.

TripleK: A Mathematica package for evaluating triple-K integrals and conformal correlation functions

I present a Mathematica package designed for manipulations and evaluations of triple-K integrals and conformal correlation functions in momentum space. Additionally, the program provides tools for evaluation of a large class of 2- and 3-point massless multi-loop Feynman integrals with generalized propagators. The package is accompanied by five Mathematica notebooks containing detailed calculations of numerous conformal 3-point functions in momentum space.

Conformal $n$-point functions in momentum space

We present a Feynman integral representation for the general momentum-space scalar $n$-point function in any conformal field theory. This representation solves the conformal Ward identities and features an arbitrary function of $n(n-3)/2$ variables which play the role of momentum-space conformal cross-ratios. It involves $(n-1)(n-2)/2$ integrations over momenta, with the momenta running over the edges of an $(n-1)$-simplex. We provide the details in the simplest non-trivial case (4-point functions), and for this case we identify values of the operator and spacetime dimensions for which singularities arise leading to anomalies and beta functions, and discuss several illustrative examples from perturbative quantum field theory and holography.

Dimensional regularization for holographic RG flows

In this work, we present a holographic renormalization scheme for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in which the dual renormalization scheme of the boundary field theory is dimensional regularization. This constitutes a new level of precision in the holographic dictionary and paves the way for the exact matching of scheme dependent quantities, such as holographic beta functions, with field theory computations. Furthermore, the renormalization procedure identifies a local source field which satisfies the equations of motion along renormalization group flows, resolving a long-standing puzzle regarding the Wilsonian coupling in holography. This identification of the source field also provides new insight into field theories deformed by marginal operators, which have been traditionally difficult to analyze due to altered bulk asymptotics. Finally, we demonstrate a new relation equating the analyticity of the holographic beta function to the absence of conformal anomalies, and conjecture that the conformal anomaly should vanish in the UV for all holographic constructions.

Renormalised CFT 3-point functions of scalars, currents and stress tensors

We discuss the renormalisation of mixed 3-point functions involving tensorial and scalar operators in conformal field theories of general dimension. In previous work we analysed correlators of either purely scalar or purely tensorial operators, in each case finding new features and new complications: for scalar correlators, renormalisation leads to beta functions, novel conformal anomalies of type B, and unexpected analytic structure in momentum space; for correlators of stress tensors and/or conserved currents, beta functions vanish but anomalies of both type B and type A (associated with a $0/0$ structure) are present. Mixed correlators combine all these features: beta functions and anomalies of type B, plus the possibility of new type A anomalies. Following a non-perturbative and general momentum-space analysis, we present explicit results in dimensions $d=3,4$ for all renormalised 3-point functions of stress tensors, conserved currents and scalars of dimensions $\Delta=d$ and $\Delta=d-2$. We identify all anomalies and beta functions, and explain the form of the anomalous conformal Ward identities. In $d=3$, we find a $0/0$ structure but the corresponding type A anomaly turns out to be trivial. In addition, the correlators of two currents and a scalar, and of two stress tensors and a scalar, both feature universal tensor structures that are independent of the scalar dimension and vanish for opposite helicities.

The holographic interpretation of $J \bar T$-deformed CFTs

Recently, a non-local yet possibly UV-complete quantum field theory has been constructed by deforming a two-dimensional CFT by the composite operator $J \bar T$, where $J$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current and $\bar T$ is a component of the stress tensor. Assuming the original CFT was a holographic CFT, we work out the holographic dual of its $J \bar T$ deformation. We find that the dual spacetime is still AdS$_3$, but with modified boundary conditions that mix the metric and the Chern-Simons gauge field dual to the $U(1)$ current. We show that when the coefficient of the chiral anomaly for $J$ vanishes, the energy and thermodynamics of black holes obeying these modified boundary conditions precisely reproduce the previously derived field theory spectrum and thermodynamics. Our proposed holographic dictionary can also reproduce the field-theoretical spectrum in presence of the chiral anomaly, upon a certain assumption that we justify. The asymptotic symmetry group associated to these boundary conditions consists of two copies of the Virasoro and one copy of the $U(1)$ Ka\v{c}-Moody algebra, just as before the deformation; the only effect of the latter is to modify the spacetime dependence of the right-moving Virasoro generators, whose action becomes state-dependent and effectively non-local.

Interactions resolve state-dependence in a toy-model of AdS black holes

We show that the holographic description of a class of AdS black holes with scalar hair involves dual field theories with a double well effective potential. Black hole microstates have significant support around both vacua in the dual, which correspond to perturbative degrees of freedom on opposite sides of the horizon. A solvable toy-model version of this dual is given by a quantum mechanical particle in a double well potential. In this we show explicitly that the interactions replace the state-dependence that is needed to describe black hole microstates in a low energy effective model involving the tensor product of two decoupled harmonic oscillators. A naive number operator signals the presence of a firewall but a careful construction of perturbative states and operators extinguishes this.

Renormalised 3-point functions of stress tensors and conserved currents in CFT

We present a complete momentum-space prescription for the renormalisation of tensorial correlators in conformal field theories. Our discussion covers all 3-point functions of stress tensors and conserved currents in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. In dimensions three and four, we give explicit results for the renormalised correlators, the anomalous Ward identities they obey, and the conformal anomalies. For the stress tensor 3-point function in four dimensions, we identify the specific evanescent tensorial structure responsible for the type A Euler anomaly, and show this anomaly has the form of a double copy of the chiral anomaly.

Dimensional renormalization in AdS/CFT

In this paper we present a dimensional renormalization scheme suitable for holographic theories. We use the bulk physics in the supergravity limit as a definition of the dual CFT. Similar to the perturbative quantization of a QFT, one is free to choose a convenient renormalization scheme, and the holographic renormalization method is only one such choice. We show how the bulk theory can be rendered finite with a renormalization scheme that corresponds to dimensional renormalization in the dual CFT. The method does not require any cut-offs and does not introduce any dimensionful parameters. It delivers a one-to-one map between bulk and boundary counterterms and leads to an exact and unambiguous identification of field theoretical objects in terms of bulk data. In particular, we resolve long standing issues regarding the identification of the renormalization scale and beta functions on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Furthermore, the method is considerably simpler than standard holographic renormalization on a practical level when evaluating correlation functions.

Cosmological singularities encoded in IR boundary correlations

We study the dynamics near big crunch singularities produced in asymptotic AdS cosmologies using gauge/gravity duality. The dual description consists of a constant mass deformation of ABJM theory on de Sitter space and is well-defined and stable for small deformations. We identify the critical deformation where the theory becomes unstable at weak and at strong coupling. Using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary we compute two-point correlators of ABJM operators of large dimensions. Near the critical deformation a second saddle point contribution enters, in which the spacelike geodesics probe the high curvature region near the singularity. Its contribution strongly enhances the long-distance correlations. This has a natural interpretation in the weakly coupled boundary theory where the critical point corresponds to a massless limit.

Evaluation of conformal integrals

We present a comprehensive method for the evaluation of a vast class of integrals representing 3-point functions of conformal field theories in momentum space. The method leads to analytic, closed-form expressions for all scalar and tensorial 3-point functions of operators with integer dimensions in any spacetime dimension. In particular, this encompasses all 3-point functions of the stress tensor, conserved currents and marginal scalar operators.
