Topology of Shape and Data in Material Microstructures

One of the challenges in microstructure analysis is the rigorous quantification of the shape, size, and spatial arrangement of the microstructure beyond comparison of average values. We expound on formal principles combining Topological Data Analysis (TDA) and non-Euclidean distances between curves to motivate novel perspectives on the form and nature of pattern and shape in images. Specifically, TDA descriptors extracting persistent topological structures are combined with product submanifold learning of separable shape tensors (SST) to offer unique insights about electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) images of material microstructures through the lens of a dual-parameter filtration. Beyond standard approaches, our methodology highlights how different choices or permutations of shape distances can lead to distinct notions of topological persistence, thereby broadening the interpretive scope of TDA. The resulting visualizations of feature extraction are designed to be both principled and explanatory, offering novel tools for modern imaging science with applications to material metrology. More broadly, this framework has strong potential to impact domains where precise quantification of topology and shape is critical for uncovering fundamental image patterns and features, and enables additional data-driven tools for microstructure analysis.

Three-dimensional nucleation and growth of deformation twins in magnesium

At two-thirds the weight of aluminum, magnesium alloys have the potential to significantly reduce the fuel consumption of transportation vehicles. These advancements depend on our ability to optimize the desirable versus undesirable effects of deformation twins: three dimensional (3D) microstructural domains that form under mechanical stresses. Previously only characterized using surface or thin-film measurements, here, we present the first 3D in-situ characterization of deformation twinning inside an embedded grain over mesoscopic fields of view using dark-field X-ray microscopy supported by crystal plasticity finite element analysis. The results reveal the important role of triple junctions on twin nucleation, that twin growth behavior is irregular and can occur in several directions simultaneously, and that twin-grain and twin-twin junctions are the sites of localized dislocation accumulation, a necessary precursor to crack initiation.

Accelerated Discovery of Molten Salt Corrosion-resistant Alloy by High-throughput Experimental and Modeling Methods Coupled to Data Analytics

Insufficient availability of molten salt corrosion-resistant alloys severely limits the fruition of a variety of promising molten salt technologies that could otherwise have significant societal impacts. To accelerate alloy development for molten salt applications and develop fundamental understanding of corrosion in these environments, here we present an integrated approach using a set of high-throughput alloy synthesis, corrosion testing, and modeling coupled with automated characterization and machine learning. By using this approach, a broad range of Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys were evaluated for their corrosion resistances in molten salt simultaneously demonstrating that corrosion-resistant alloy development can be accelerated by thousands of times. Based on the obtained results, we unveiled a sacrificial mechanism in the corrosion of Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni alloys in molten salts which can be applied to protect the less unstable elements in the alloy from being depleted, and provided new insights on the design of high-temperature molten salt corrosion-resistant alloys.
