Tensor algebras of product systems and their C*-envelopes

Let $(G, P)$ be an abelian, lattice ordered group and let $X$ be a compactly aligned product system over $P$. We show that the C*-envelope of the Nica tensor algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{T}^+_X$ coincides with both Sehnem's covariance algebra $\mathcal{A} \times_X P$ and the co-universal C*-algebra $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$ for injective, gauge compatible, Nica-covariant representations of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello. We give several applications of this result on both the selfadjoint and non-selfadjoint operator algebra theory. First we guarantee the existence of $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{O}^r_X$, thus settling a problem of Carlsen, Larsen, Sims and Vittadello which was open even for abelian, lattice ordered groups. As a second application, we resolve a problem posed by Skalski and Zacharias on dilating isometric representations of product systems to unitary representations. As a third application we characterize the C*-envelope of the tensor algebra of a finitely aligned higher-rank graph which also holds for topological higher-rank graphs. As a final application we prove reduced Hao-Ng isomorphisms for generalized gauge actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras of product systems. This generalizes recent results that were obtained by various authors in the case where $(G, P) =(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{N})$.

Doob equivalence and non-commutative peaking for Markov chains

In this paper we show how questions about operator algebras constructed from stochastic matrices motivate new results in the study of harmonic functions on Markov chains. More precisely, we characterize coincidence of conditional probabilities in terms of (generalized) Doob transforms, which then leads to a stronger classification result for the associated operator algebras in terms of spectral radius and strong Liouville property. Furthermore, we characterize the non-commutative peak points of the associated operator algebra in a way that allows one to determine them from inspecting the matrix. This leads to a concrete analogue of the maximum modulus principle for computing the norm of operators in the ampliated operator algebras.

Operator algebras for higher rank analysis and their application to factorial languages

We study strong compactly aligned product systems of $\mathbb{Z}_+^N$ over a C*-algebra $A$. We provide a description of their Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra in terms of tractable relations coming from ideals of $A$. This approach encompasses product systems where the left action is given by compacts, as well as a wide class of higher rank graphs (beyond row-finite). Moreover we analyze higher rank factorial languages and their C*-algebras. Many of the rank one results in the literature find here their higher rank analogues. In particular, we show that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of a higher rank sofic language coincides with the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of its unlabeled follower set higher rank graph. However there are also differences. For example, the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner can lie in-between the first quantization and its quotient by the compactly supported operators.

Structure of free semigroupoid algebras

A free semigroupoid algebra is the closure of the algebra generated by a TCK family of a graph in the weak operator topology. We obtain a structure theory for these algebras analogous to that of free semigroup algebra. We clarify the role of absolute continuity and wandering vectors. These results are applied to obtain a Lebesgue-von Neumann-Wold decomposition of TCK families, along with reflexivity, a Kaplansky density theorem and classification for free semigroupoid algebras. Several classes of examples are discussed and developed, including self-adjoint examples and a classification of atomic free semigroupoid algebras up to unitary equivalence.

Full Cuntz-Krieger dilations via non-commutative boundaries

We apply Arveson's non-commutative boundary theory to dilate every Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger family of a directed graph $G$ to a full Cuntz-Krieger family for $G$. We do this by describing all representations of the Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}(G)$ that have unique extension when restricted to the tensor algebra $\mathcal{T}_+(G)$. This yields an alternative proof to a result of Katsoulis and Kribs that the $C^*$-envelope of $\mathcal T_+(G)$ is the Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal O(G)$. We then generalize our dilation results further, to the context of colored directed graphs, by investigating free products of operator algebras. These generalizations rely on results of independent interest on complete injectivity and a characterization of representations with the unique extension property for free products of operator algebras.

Dilations, inclusions of matrix convex sets, and completely positive maps

A matrix convex set is a set of the form $\mathcal{S} = \cup_{n\geq 1}\mathcal{S}_n$ (where each $\mathcal{S}_n$ is a set of $d$-tuples of $n \times n$ matrices) that is invariant under UCP maps from $M_n$ to $M_k$ and under formation of direct sums. We study the geometry of matrix convex sets and their relationship to completely positive maps and dilation theory. Key ingredients in our approach are polar duality in the sense of Effros and Winkler, matrix ranges in the sense of Arveson, and concrete constructions of scaled commuting normal dilation for tuples of self-adjoint operators, in the sense of Helton, Klep, McCullough and Schweighofer. Given two matrix convex sets $\mathcal{S} = \cup_{n \geq 1} \mathcal{S}_n,$ and $\mathcal{T} = \cup_{n \geq 1} \mathcal{T}_n$, we find geometric conditions on $\mathcal{S}$ or on $\mathcal{T}$, such that $\mathcal{S}_1 \subseteq \mathcal{T}_1$ implies that $\mathcal{S} \subseteq C\mathcal{S}$ for some constant $C$. For instance, under various symmetry conditions on $\mathcal{S}$, we can show that $C$ above can be chosen to equal $d$, the number of variables, and in some cases this is sharp. We also find an essentially unique self-dual matrix convex set $\mathcal{D}$, the self-dual matrix ball, for which corresponding inclusion and dilation results hold with constant $C=\sqrt{d}$. Our results have immediate implications to spectrahedral inclusion problems studied recently by Helton, Klep, McCullough and Schweighofer. Our constants do not depend on the ranks of the pencils determining the free spectrahedra in question, but rather on the "number of variables" $d$. There are also implications to the problem of existence of (unital) completely positive maps with prescribed values on a set of operators.

C*-envelopes of tensor algebras arising from stochastic matrices

In this paper we study the C*-envelope of the (non-self-adjoint) tensor algebra associated via subproduct systems to a finite irreducible stochastic matrix $P$. Firstly, we identify the boundary representations of the tensor algebra inside the Toeplitz algebra, also known as its non-commutative Choquet boundary. As an application, we provide examples of C*-envelopes that are not *-isomorphic to either the Toeplitz algebra or the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. This characterization required a new proof for the fact that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to $P$ is isomorphic to $C(\mathbb{T}, M_d(\mathbb{C}))$, filling a gap in a previous paper. We then proceed to classify the C*-envelopes of tensor algebras of stochastic matrices up to *-isomorphism and stable isomorphism, in terms of the underlying matrices. This is accomplished by determining the K-theory of these C*-algebras and by combining this information with results due to Paschke and Salinas in extension theory. This classification is applied to provide a clearer picture of the various C*-envelopes that can land between the Toeplitz and the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.

Isomorphisms of tensor algebras arising from weighted partial systems

We continue the study of isomorphisms of tensor algebras associated to a C*-correspondences in the sense of Muhly and Solel. Inspired by by recent work of Davidson, Ramsey and Shalit, we solve isomorphism problems for tensor algebras arising from weighted partial dynamical systems. We provide complete bounded / isometric classification results for tensor algebras arising from weighted partial systems, both in terms of the C*-correspondences associated to them, and in terms of the original dynamics. We use this to show that the isometric isomorphism and algebraic / bounded isomorphism problems are two distinct problems, that require separate criteria to be solved. Our methods yield alternative proofs to classification results for Peters' semi-crossed product due to Davidson and Katsoulis and for multiplicity-free graph tensor algebras due to Katsoulis, Kribs and Solel.

Operator algebras and subproduct systems arising from stochastic matrices

We study subproduct systems in the sense of Shalit and Solel arising from stochastic matrices on countable state spaces, and their associated operator algebras. We focus on the non-self-adjoint tensor algebra, and Viselter's generalization of the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra to the context of subproduct systems. Suppose that $X$ and $Y$ are Arveson-Stinespring subproduct systems associated to two stochastic matrices over a countable set $Ω$, and let $\mathcal{T}_+(X)$ and $\mathcal{T}_+(Y)$ be their tensor algebras. We show that every algebraic isomorphism from $\mathcal{T}_+(X)$ onto $\mathcal{T}_+(Y)$ is automatically bounded. Furthermore, $\mathcal{T}_+(X)$ and $\mathcal{T}_+(Y)$ are isometrically isomorphic if and only if $X$ and $Y$ are unitarily isomorphic up to a *-automorphism of $\ell^\infty(Ω)$. When $Ω$ is finite, we prove that $\mathcal{T}_+(X)$ and $\mathcal{T}_+(Y)$ are algebraically isomorphic if and only if there exists a similarity between $X$ and $Y$ up to a *-automorphism of $\ell^\infty(Ω)$. Moreover, we provide an explicit description of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}(X)$ in the case where $Ω$ is finite and the stochastic matrix is essential.
