D^\pm Production Asymmetry at the LHC from Heavy-Quark Recombination

The asymmetry in the forward region production cross section of D^\pm is calculated using the heavy-quark recombination mechanism for pp collisions at 7 TeV. By suitable choices of four non-perturbative parameters, our calculated results can reproduce those obtained at LHCb. We find A_p ~ -1% when integrated over 2.0 GeV < p_T < 18 GeV and 2.2< eta <4.75, which agrees with A_p=-0.96\pm0.26\pm0.18% as measured by LHCb. Furthermore, the calculated distributions in eta and p_T agree reasonably well with those obtained at LHCb.

Anomalous dimensions of the double parton fragmentation functions

Double parton fragmentation is a process in which a pair of partons produced in the short-distance process hadronize into the final state hadron. This process is important for quarkonium production when the transverse momentum is much greater than the quark mass. Resummation of logarithms of the ratio of these two scales requires the evolution equations for double parton fragmentation functions (DPFF). In this paper we complete the one-loop evaluation of the anomalous dimensions for the DPFF. We also consider possible mixing between the DPFF and single parton power suppressed gluon fragmentation and show that such effects are sub-leading.

The Systematics of Quarkonium Production at the LHC and Double Parton Fragmentation

In this paper we discuss the systematics of quarkonium production at the LHC. In particular, we focus on the necessity to sum logs of the form log(Q/p_perp) and log(p_perp/m_Q). We show that the former contributions are power suppressed, while the latter, whose contribution in fragmentation is well known, also arise in the short distance (i.e., non-fragmentation) production mechanisms. Though these contributions are suppressed by powers of m_Q/p_perp, they can be enhanced by inverse powers of v, the relative velocity between heavy quarks in the quarkonium. In the limit p_perp >> m_Q short distance production can be thought of as the fragmentation of a pair of partons (i.e., the heavy quark and anti-quark) into the final state quarkonium. We derive an all order factorization theorem for this process in terms of double parton fragmentation functions (DPFF) and calculate the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the DPFF.

Radiation reaction at 3.5 post-Newtonian order in effective field theory

We derive the radiation reaction forces on a compact binary inspiral through 3.5 order in the post-Newtonian expansion using the effective field theory approach. We utilize a recent formulation of Hamilton's variational principle that rigorously extends the usual Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms to dissipative systems, including the inspiral of a compact binary from the emission of gravitational waves. We find agreement with previous results, which thus provides a non-trivial confirmation of the extended variational principle. The results from this work nearly complete the equations of motion for the generic inspiral of a compact binary with spinning constituents through 3.5 post-Newtonian order, as derived entirely with effective field theory, with only the spin-orbit corrections to the potential at 3.5 post-Newtonian remaining.

Finite size corrections to the radiation reaction force in classical electrodynamics

We introduce an effective field theory approach that describes the motion of finite size objects under the influence of electromagnetic fields. We prove that leading order effects due to the finite radius $R$ of a spherically symmetric charge is order $R^2$ rather than order $R$ in any physical model, as widely claimed in the literature. This scaling arises as a consequence of Poincaré and gauge symmetries, which can be shown to exclude linear corrections. We use the formalism to calculate the leading order finite size correction to the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac force.

Leading SU(3) breaking in lightcone distribution amplitudes

The lightcone formalism including SU(3) breaking effects for the light pseudoscalar mesons is studied using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), where the conformal symmetries needed for the expansion can be clearly implemented. The lightcone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are well-defined at each order in the SCET power counting, lambda. Relations between the LCDAs are reproduced using the SCET formalism. Treating the SU(3) breaking perturbatively, the leading breaking effects can be described in a simple manner. As a result, a new relationship among the LCDAs for the light mesons pi, K, and eta is developed, valid to leading order in the SU(3) breaking.

Nonperturbative Charming Penguin Contributions to Isospin Asymmetries in Radiative B decays

Recent experimental data on the radiative decays B -> V gamma, where V is a light vector meson, find small isospin violation in B -> K^* gamma while isospin asymmetries in B -> rho gamma are of order 20%, with large uncertainties. Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we calculate isospin asymmetries in these radiative B decays up to O(1/m_b), also including O(v alpha_s) contributions from nonperturbative charming penguins (NPCP). In the absence of NPCP contributions, the theoretical predictions for the asymmetries are a few percent or less. Including the NPCP can significantly increase the isospin asymmetries for both B -> V gamma modes. We also consider the effect of the NPCP on the branching ratio and CP asymmetries in B^\pm -> V^\pm gamma.

Probing electroweak physics using B -> XM decays in the endpoint region

Using soft-collinear effective theory we describe at leading order in 1/m_b all the semi-inclusive hadronic B -> XM decays near the endpoint, where an energetic light meson M recoils against an inclusive jet X. We also include the decays involving eta, eta' mesons that receive additional contributions from gluonic operators. The predicted branching ratios and CP asymmetries depend on fewer hadronic parameters than the corresponding two-body B decays. This makes semi-inclusive hadronic B -> XM decays a powerful probe of the potential nonperturbative nature of charming penguins as well as a useful probe of new physics effects in electroweak flavor changing transitions. A comparison with B -> KX data from BaBar points to an enhanced charming penguin, albeit with large experimental errors.

Resummation of Large Endpoint Corrections to Color-Octet J/psi Photoproduction

An unresolved problem in J/psi phenomenology is a systematic understanding of the differential photoproduction cross section, dsigma/dz [gamma + p -> J/psi + X], where z= E_psi/E_gamma in the proton rest frame. In the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, fixed-order perturbative calculations of color-octet mechanisms suffer from large perturbative and nonperturbative corrections that grow rapidly in the endpoint region, z -> 1. In this paper, NRQCD and soft collinear effective theory are combined to resum these large corrections to the color-octet photoproduction cross section. We derive a factorization theorem for the endpoint differential cross section involving the parton distribution function and the color-octet J/psi shape functions. A one loop matching calculation explicitly confirms our factorization theorem at next-to-leading order. Large perturbative corrections are resummed using the renormalization group. The calculation of the color-octet contribution to dsigma/dz is in qualitative agreement with data. Quantitative tests of the universality of color-octet matrix elements require improved knowledge of shape functions entering these calculations as well as resummation of the color-singlet contribution which accounts for much of the total cross section and also peaks near the endpoint.

Semi-inclusive hadronic B decays in the endpoint region

We consider in the soft-collinear effective theory semi-inclusive hadronic B decays, B-> XM, in which an energetic light meson M near the endpoint recoils against an inclusive jet X. We focus on a subset of decays where the spectator quark from the B meson ends up in the jet. The branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries are computed to next-to-leading order accuracy in alpha_s and to leading order in 1/m_b. The contribution of charming penguins is extensively discussed, and a method to extract it in semi-inclusive decays is suggested. Subleading 1/m_b corrections and SU(3) breaking effects are discussed.

J/psi Photo-production at Large z in Soft Collinear Effective Theory

One of the outstanding problems in J/ψphysics is a systematic understanding of the differential photo-production cross section dsigma/dz(gamma + p -> J/psi + X), where z= E_psi/E_gamma in the proton rest frame. The theoretical prediction based on the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism has a color-octet contribution which grows rapidly in the endpoint region, z -> 1, spoiling perturbation theory. In addition there are subleading operators which are enhanced by powers of 1/(1-z) and they must be resummed to all orders. Here an update of a systematic analysis is presented. The approach used to organize the endpoint behavior of the photo-production cross section is based on a combination of NRQCD and soft collinear effective theory. While a final result is not yet available, an intermediate result indicates that better agreement between theory and data will be achieved in this framework.

SCET sum rules for heavy-to-light form factors

We consider a sum rule for heavy-to-light form factors in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Using the correlation function given by the time-ordered product of a heavy-to-light current and its hermitian conjugate, the heavy-to-light soft form factor zeta_P can be related to the leading-order B meson shape function. Using the scaling behavior of the heavy-to-light form factor in Lambda_QCD/m_b, we put a constraint on the behavior of the $B$ meson shape function near the endpoint. We employ the sum rule to estimate the size of zeta_P with the model for the shape function and find that it ranges from 0.01 to 0.07.

Quark mass effects in the soft-collinear effective theory and B -> X_s + photon in the endpoint region

We consider the effects of a light quark mass in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) and we apply them to B -> X_s gamma in the endpoint region. We find that the reparameterization invariance can be extended by including the collinear quark mass in the SCET Lagrangian. This symmetry constrains the theory with the quark mass terms, and we present explicit results at one loop. It also relates the Wilson coefficients of some mass operators to those of the leading operators, which are useful in organizing the subleading effects due to the quark mass in B -> X_s gamma. We present strange quark mass corrections to B -> X_s gamma in the endpoint region as an application. The forward scattering amplitude from the mass corrections is factorized, and it can be expressed as a convolution of the m_s^2/p_X^2-suppressed jet function and the leading-order shape function of the B meson. This contribution should be added to the existing subleading contributions from the B meson shape functions to obtain complete subleading corrections.

Exclusive Radiative Decays of Upsilon in SCET

We study exclusive radiative decays of the $Υ$ using soft-collinear effective theory and non-relativistic QCD. In contrast to inclusive radiative decays at the endpoint we find that color-octet contributions are power suppressed in exclusive decays, and can safely be neglected, greatly simplifying the analysis. We determine the complete set of Lorentz structures that can appear in the SCET Wilson coefficients and match onto them using results from a previous calculation. We run these coefficients from the scale $\mups$ to the scale $Λ\sim 1 \textrm{GeV}$, thereby summing large logarithms. Finally we use our results to predict the ratio of branching fractions $B(Υ\to γf_2)/B(J/ψ\to γf_2)$, $B(J/ψ\to γf_2)/B(ψ' \to γf_2)$, and the partial rate for $Υ\to γππ$.

Flavor-singlet light-cone amplitudes and radiative Upsilon decays in SCET

We study the evolution of flavor-singlet, light-cone amplitudes in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and reproduce results previously obtained by a different approach. We apply our calculation to the color-singlet contribution to the photon endpoint in radiative Upsilon decay. In a previous paper, we studied the color-singlet contributions to the endpoint, but neglected operator mixing, arguing that it should be a numerically small effect. Nevertheless the mixing needs to be included in a consistent calculation, and we do just that in this work. We find that the effects of mixing are indeed numerically small. This result combined with previous work on the color-octet contribution and the photon fragmentation contribution provides a consistent theoretical treatment of the photon spectrum in radiative Upsilon decay.

Predictions for nonleptonic Lambda_b and Theta_b decays

We study nonleptonic Lambda_b -> Lambda_c pi, Sigma_c pi and Sigma_c^* pi decays in the limit m_b, m_c, E_pi >> Lambda_{QCD} using the soft-collinear effective theory. Here Sigma_c = Sigma_c(2455) and Sigma_c^* = Sigma_c(2520). At leading order the Lambda_b -> Sigma_c^{(*)} pi rates vanish, while the Lambda_b -> Lambda_c pi rate is related to Lambda_b -> Lambda_c\ell\barν, and is expected to be larger than Gamma(B -> D^{(*)} pi). The dominant contributions to the Lambda_b -> Sigma_c^{(*)} pi rates are suppressed by Lambda_{QCD}^2/E_pi^2. We predict Gamma(Lambda_b -> Sigma_c^* pi) / Gamma(Lambda_b -> Sigma_c pi) = 2 + O[Lambda_{QCD}/m_Q, alpha_s(m_Q)], and the same ratio for Lambda_b -> Sigma_c^{(*)} rho and for Lambda_b -> Xi_c^{(',*)}K. ``Bow tie'' diagrams are shown to be suppressed. We comment on possible discovery channels for weakly decaying pentaquarks, Theta_{b,c} and their nearby heavy quark spin symmetry partners, Theta_{b,c}^*.

Resumming the color-octet contribution to e+ e- -> J/psi + X

Recent observations of the spectrum of J/psi produced in e+ e- collisions at the Upsilon(4S) resonance are in conflict with fixed-order calculations using the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) effective field theory. One problem is that leading order color-octet mechanisms predict an enhancement of the cross section for J/psi with maximal energy that is not observed in the data. However, in this region of phase space large perturbative corrections (Sudakov logarithms) as well as enhanced nonperturbative effects are important. In this paper we use the newly developed Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to systematically include these effects. We find that these corrections significantly broaden the color-octet contribution to the J/psi spectrum. Our calculation employs a one-stage renormalization group evolution rather than the two-stage evolution used in previous SCET calculations. We give a simple argument for why the two methods yield identical results to lowest order in the SCET power counting.
