Evidence for easy-plane XY ferromagnetism in heavy-fermion quantum-critical CeRh6Ge4

We report $^{73}$Ge nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the heavy-fermion quantum-critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. NQR and NMR spectral measurements at the two non-equivalent Ge sites reveal electric field gradient tensors and the directions of their principal axes relative to the hexagonal basal plane. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ experiments reveal a clear critical slowing down approaching the ferromagnetic transition. $1/T_1$ in the paramagnetic state is found to be predominantly caused by fluctuating 4$f$-local moments. The Knight shift shows Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperature and a deviation from this below $T^\ast$ $\approx$ 25 K possibly due to a mixture of crystalline electric field effects and Kondo screening. Order-parameter-like behavior of hyperfine fields at the Ge sites and ferromagnetic signal enhancement are observed in Zeeman-perturbed NQR, with uniform ferromagnetic order and a small ordered moment of $\approx$ 0.26 $\mu_B$/Ce confined within the $ab$-plane. The ordered moment shows a notable in-plane magnetic stiffness against out-of-plane radiofrequency fields and has an (XY-type) in-plane isotropic nature. Our results reveal a strong easy-plane anisotropy of 4$f$-electron moment and suggest an involved interplay of hybridization and local moment physics in this quantum critical heavy-fermion ferromagnet.

Nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of strain-tuned iron-based superconductors (Druckabh\"{a}ngige Untersuchung eisenbasierter Supraleiter mittels Kernspinresonanz)

Final report for a Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Eigenestelle Grant, summarizing work mainly on uniaxial-pressure-dependent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations of BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We have conducted systematic $^{75}$As NMR experiments in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under in-situ controlled conditions of uniaxial pressure. We find that the electric field gradient (EFG), spin--lattice relaxation rate T$_1^{-1}$, spin--spin relaxation rate T$_2^{-1}$, and Knight shift $K$ at the As site are sensitive to applied uniaxial pressure. These properties allow us to locally probe the nematic susceptibility, as well as orbital and spin degrees of freedom. Our spectral measurements in the magnetic state provide no evidence for spin reorientation below the T$_N$ for both positive and negative applied uniaxial pressure up to the point of sample failure.

Local aging effects in PuB$_{4}$: Growing inhomogeneity and slow dynamics of local-field fluctuations probed by $^{239}$Pu NMR

The effect of self-irradiation damage can influence many properties of a radioactive material. Actinide materials involving the decay through alpha radiation have been frequently studied using techniques such as transport, thermodynamics, and x-ray diffraction. The use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study such effects, however, has seen relatively little attention. Here, we use $^{239}$Pu NMR to study the local influence of self-damage in a single crystal of the candidate topological insulator plutonium tetraboride (PuB$_{4}$). We first characterize the anisotropy of the $^{239}$Pu resonance in a single crystal and confirm the local axial site symmetry inferred from previous polycrystalline measurements. Aging effects are then evaluated over the timeframe of six years. We find that, though the static NMR spectra may show a slight modulation in their shape, their field-rotation pattern reveals no change in Pu local site symmetry over time, suggesting that aging has a surprisingly small impact on the spatial distribution of the static hyperfine field. By contrast, aging has a prominent impact on the NMR relaxation processes and signal intensity. Specifically, aging-induced damage manifests itself as an increase in the spin-lattice relaxation time $T_{1}$, an increased distribution of $T_{1}$, and a signal intensity that decreases linearly by 20 % per year. The spin-spin relaxation time $T_{2}$ in the aged sample shows a strong variation across the spectrum as well as a drastic shortening towards lower temperature, suggesting growth of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field that are linked to radiation-damage-induced inhomogeneity and could be responsible for the signal wipeout that develops over time.

Uniaxial stress study of spin and charge stripes in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ by $^{139}$La NMR and $^{63}$Cu NQR

We study the response of spin and charge order in single crystals of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ to uniaxial stress, through $^{139}$La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and $^{63}$Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), respectively. In unstressed La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, the low-temperature tetragonal structure onsets below $T_{\text{LTT}} = 57$K, while the charge order and the spin order transition temperatures are $T_\text{CO} = 54$K and $T_\text{SO} = 37$K, respectively. We find that uniaxial stress along the [110] lattice direction strongly suppresses $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{SO}}$, but has little effect on $T_\text{LTT}$. In other words, under stress along [110] a large splitting ($\approx 21$K) opens between $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{LTT}}$, showing that these transitions are not tightly linked. On the other hand, stress along [100] causes a slight suppression of $T_\text{LTT}$ but has essentially no effect on $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{SO}}$. Magnetic field $H$ along [110] stabilizes the spin order: the suppression of $T_\text{SO}$ under stress along [110] is slower under $H \parallel [110]$ than $H \parallel [001]$. We develop a Landau free energy model and interpret our findings as an interplay of symmetry breaking terms driven by the orientation of spins.

Revisiting the phase diagram of LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO on single crystals by thermodynamic methods

In this work we revisit the phase diagram of Co-doped LaFeAsO using single crystals and thermodynamic methods. From magnetic susceptibility studies we track the doping evolution of the antiferromagnetic phase, revealing a continuous suppression of $T_\mathrm{N}$ up to 5$\%$ Co doping. In order to study the evolution of the so-called nematic phase, the temperature dependence of the lengths changes along the $a$ and $b$ orthorhombic directions, $ΔL/L_0$, was determined by high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. The results clearly show a gradual reduction of the orthorhombic distortion $δ$ and of $T_\mathrm{S}$ with increasing Co content up to 4.5$\%$, while it is completely suppressed for 7.5$\%$ Co. Bulk superconductivity was found in a small doping region around 6$\%$ Co content, while both $T_\mathrm{c}$ and the superconducting volume fraction rapidly drop in the neighbouring doping regime. Ultimately, no microscopic coexistence between the superconducting and magnetic phases can be assessed within our resolution limit, in sharp contrast with other iron-pnictide families, e.g., electron- and hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$.

Mapping out the spin fluctuations in Co-doped LaFeAsO single crystals by NMR

We determine the phase diagram of LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO single crystals by using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Up to a nominal doping of $x=0.03$, it follows the phase diagram for F-doped polycrystals. Above $x=0.03$, the F-doped samples become superconducting, whereas for Co-doping the structural and magnetic transitions can be observed up to $x=0.042$, and superconductivity occurs only for higher doping levels and with reduced transition temperatures. For dopings up to $x=0.056$, we find evidence for short-range magnetic order. By means of relaxation-rate measurements, we map out the magnetic fluctuations that reveal the interplay of nematicity and magnetism. Above the nematic ordering, the spin fluctuations in LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO are identical to those in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, suggesting that nematicity in LaFeAsO is a result of the fluctuating spin density wave as well.

A unified phase diagram of F-doped LaFeAsO by means of NMR and NQR parameters

We present $^{75}$As Nuclear Magnetic and Quadrupole Resonance results (NMR, NQR) on a new set of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ polycrystalline samples. Improved synthesis conditions led to more homogenized samples with better control of the fluorine content. The structural$\equiv$nematic, magnetic, and superconducting transition temperatures have been determined by NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and AC susceptibility measurements. The so-determined phase diagram deviates from the published one especially for low F-doping concentrations. However, if the doping level is determined from the NQR spectra, both phase diagrams can be reconciled. The absence of bulk coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity and a nanoscale separation into low-doping-like and high-doping-like regions have been confirmed. Additional frequency dependent intensity, spin-spin, and spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements on underdoped samples at the boundary of magnetism and superconductivity indicate that orthorhombicity and magnetism originate from the low-doping-like regions, and superconductivity develops at first in the high-doping-like regions.

Local magnetic inhomogeneities observed via 75As NMR in Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 with H0 {\perp} c-axis

We present field-swept 75As Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements in the spin-density wave (SDW) state of Ba(Fe1-xNix)2As2 for x=0.0072. The large single crystals were aligned with the external field H0 perpendicular to the c axis. The spectra are increasingly broadened as a function of doping, and are well fit by a model of a commensurate SDW with local impurities.

Bulk magnetic order in a two dimensional Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8) nickelate, isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates

Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].
