Groupoid Fell bundles for product systems over quasi-lattice ordered groups

Consider a product system over the positive cone of a quasi-lattice ordered group. We construct a Fell bundle over an associated groupoid so that the cross-sectional algebra of the bundle is isomorphic to the Nica-Toeplitz algebra of the product system. Under the additional hypothesis that the left actions in the product system are implemented by injective homomorphisms, we show that the cross-sectional algebra of the restriction of the bundle to a natural boundary subgroupoid coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of the product system. We apply these results to improve on existing sufficient conditions for nuclearity of the Nica-Toeplitz algebra and the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra, and for the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra to coincide with its co-universal quotient.

Twisted Cyclic Cohomology and Modular Fredholm Modules

Connes and Cuntz showed in [Comm. Math. Phys. 114 (1988), 515-526] that suitable cyclic cocycles can be represented as Chern characters of finitely summable semifinite Fredholm modules. We show an analogous result in twisted cyclic cohomology using Chern characters of modular Fredholm modules. We present examples of modular Fredholm modules arising from Podleś spheres and from $SU_q(2)$.

Pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples and the harmonic oscillator

We define pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples, an analytic context broad enough to encompass a spectral description of a wide class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, as well as their noncommutative generalisations. Our main theorem shows that to each pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple we can associate a genuine spectral triple, and so a K-homology class. With some additional assumptions we can then apply the local index theorem. We give a range of examples and some applications. The example of the harmonic oscillator in particular shows that our main theorem applies to much more than just classical pseudo-Riemannian manifolds.

Riemannian manifolds in noncommutative geometry

We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.

The resolvent cocycle in twisted cyclic cohomology and a local index formula for the Podles sphere

We continue the investigation of twisted homology theories in the context of dimension drop phenomena. This work unifies previous equivariant index calculations in twisted cyclic cohomology. We do this by proving the existence of the resolvent cocycle, a finitely summable analogue of the JLO cocycle, under weaker smoothness hypotheses and in the more general setting of `modular' spectral triples. As an application we show that using our twisted resolvent cocycle, we can obtain a local index formula for the Podles sphere. The resulting twisted cyclic cocycle has non-vanishing Hochschild class which is in dimension 2.

The K-theory of Heegaard quantum lens spaces

Representing Z/N as roots of unity, we restrict a natural U(1)-action on the Heegaard quantum sphere to Z/N, and call the quotient spaces Heegaard quantum lens spaces. Then we use this representation of Z/N to construct an associated complex line bundle. This paper proves the stable non-triviality of these line bundles over any of the quantum lens spaces we consider. We use the pullback structure of the C*-algebra of the lens space to compute its K-theory via the Mayer-Vietoris sequence, and an explicit form of the Bass connecting homomorphism to prove the stable non-triviality of the bundles. On the algebraic side we prove the universality of the coordinate algebra of such a lens space for a particular set of generators and relations. We also prove the non-existence of non-trivial invertibles in the coordinate algebra of a lens space. Finally, we prolongate the Z/N-fibres of the Heegaard quantum sphere to U(1), and determine the algebraic structure of such a U(1)-prolongation.

A residue formula for the fundamental Hochschild 3-cocycle for SUq(2)

An analogue of a spectral triple over SUq(2) is constructed for which the usual assumption of bounded commutators with the Dirac operator fails. An analytic expression analogous to that for the Hochschild class of the Chern character for spectral triples yields a non-trivial twisted Hochschild 3-cocycle. The problems arising from the unbounded commutators are overcome by defining a residue functional using projections to cut down the Hilbert space.

Modular Index Invariants of Mumford Curves

We continue an investigation initiated by Consani-Marcolli of the relation between the algebraic geometry of p-adic Mumford curves and the noncommutative geometry of graph C*-algebras associated to the action of the uniformizing p-adic Schottky group on the Bruhat-Tits tree. We reconstruct invariants of Mumford curves related to valuations of generators of the associated Schottky group, by developing a graphical theory for KMS weights on the associated graph C*-algebra, and using modular index theory for KMS weights. We give explicit examples of the construction of graph weights for low genus Mumford curves. We then show that the theta functions of Mumford curves, and the induced currents on the Bruhat-Tits tree, define functions that generalize the graph weights. We show that such inhomogeneous graph weights can be constructed from spectral flows, and that one can reconstruct theta functions from such graphical data.

Twisted cyclic theory, equivariant KK theory and KMS States

Recently, examples of an index theory for KMS states of circle actions were discovered, \cite{CPR2,CRT}. We show that these examples are not isolated. Rather there is a general framework in which we use KMS states for circle actions on a C*-algebra A to construct Kasparov modules and semifinite spectral triples. By using a residue construction analogous to that used in the semifinite local index formula we associate to these triples a twisted cyclic cocycle on a dense subalgebra of A. This cocycle pairs with the equivariant KK-theory of the mapping cone algebra for the inclusion of the fixed point algebra of the circle action in A. The pairing is expressed in terms of spectral flow between a pair of unbounded self adjoint operators that are Fredholm in the semifinite sense. A novel aspect of our work is the discovery of an eta cocycle that forms a part of our twisted residue cocycle. To illustrate our theorems we observe firstly that they incorporate the results in \cite{CPR2,CRT} as special cases. Next we use the Araki-Woods III_λrepresentations of the Fermion algebra to show that there are examples which are not Cuntz-Krieger systems.

Reconstruction of manifolds in noncommutative geometry

We show that the algebra A of a commutative unital spectral triple (A,H,D) satisfying several additional conditions, slightly stronger than those proposed by Connes, is the algebra of smooth functions on a compact spin manifold.

Semifinite spectral triples associated with graph C*-algebras

We review the recent construction of semifinite spectral triples for graph C^*-algebras. These examples have inspired many other developments and we review some of these such as the relation between the semifinite index and the Kasparov product, examples of noncommutative manifolds, and an index theorem in twisted cyclic theory using a KMS state.

Noncommutative manifolds from graph and $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras

In previous papers, we constructed smooth (1,\infty)-summable semfinite spectral triples for graph algebras with a faithful trace, and (k,\infty)-summable semifinite spectral triples for k-graph algebras. In this paper we identify classes of graphs and k-graphs which satisfy a version of Connes' conditions for noncommutative manifolds.

The Noncommutative Geometry of k-graph C*-Algebras

This paper is comprised of two related parts. First we discuss which k-graph algebras have faithful gauge invariant traces, where the gauge action of $\T^k$ is the canonical one. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of such a trace, identify the C*-algebras of k-graphs satisfying this condition up to Morita equivalence, and compute their K-theory. For k-graphs with faithful gauge invariant trace, we construct a smooth $(k,\infty)$-summable semifinite spectral triple. We use the semifinite local index theorem to compute the pairing with K-theory. This numerical pairing can be obtained by applying the trace to a KK-pairing with values in the K-theory of the fixed point algebra of the $\T^k$ action. As with graph algebras, the index pairing is an invariant for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of the algebra.

KK-theory and Spectral Flow in von Neumann Algebras

We present a definition of spectral flow relative to any norm closed ideal J in any von Neumann algebra N. Given a path D(t) of selfadjoint operators in N which are invertible in N/J, the spectral flow produces a class in K_0(J). In the case when N is semifinite, the numerical spectral flow of the path coincides with the value of trace on the associated K-class. Given a semifinite spectral triple (A,H,D) relative to a semifinite von Neumann algebra N, we construct a class [D] in KK^1(A,N') such that, for a unitary u in A, the von Neumann spectral flow between D and u*Du is equal to the Kasparov product of [u] and [D].

The Chern Character of Semifinite Spectral Triples

In previous work we generalised both the odd and even local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. Our proofs are novel even in the setting of the original theorem and rely on the introduction of a function valued cocycle (called the resolvent cocycle) which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A. In this paper we show that this resolvent cocycle `almost' represents the Chern character, and assuming analytic continuation properties for zeta functions, we show that the associated residue cocycle, which appears in our statement of the local index theorem does represent the Chern character.

The Noncommutative Geometry of Graph $C^*$-Algebras I: The Index Theorem

We investigate conditions on a graph $C^*$-algebra for the existence of a faithful semifinite trace. Using such a trace and the natural gauge action of the circle on the graph algebra, we construct a smooth $(1,\infty)$-summable semfinite spectral triple. The local index theorem allows us to compute the pairing with $K$-theory. This produces invariants in the $K$-theory of the fixed point algebra, and these are invariants for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of $C^*(E)$.

The Local Index Formula in Semifinite von Neumann Algebras I: Spectral Flow

We generalise the local index formula of Connes and Moscovici to the case of spectral triples for a *-subalgebra \A of a general semifinite von Neumann algebra. In this setting it gives a formula for spectral flow along a path joining an unbounded self adjoint Breuer-Fredholm operator, affiliated to the von Neumann algebra, to a unitarily equivalent operator. Our proof is novel even in the setting of the original theorem and relies on the introduction of a function valued cocycle which is `almost' a (b,B)-cocycle in the cyclic cohomology of \A.
