An iterative method bridging DFT, disorder averaging, and experiment in intercalated materials: application to Au-intercalated graphene

Intercalation can strongly modify the electronic dispersion of a host material, as directly revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We develop a general iterative method combining density functional theory (DFT), tight-binding (TB), disorder averaging within the self-consistent T-matrix approximation (SCTMA), and experiment, to construct an effective model of the intercalated system. DFT identifies the relevant microscopic degrees of freedom and constrains selected model parameters, while comparison of SCTMA calculations with experiment guides their further refinement. We apply this method to graphene intercalated with Au clusters and show that it reproduces the main ARPES signatures of the Au-cluster phase, including the broadening of the V12an Hove singularity and the emergence of kink-like features in the dispersion. The essential microscopic ingredients identified by the analysis are the hybridization between selected intercalant orbitals and the graphene states, together with an intercalation-induced local scattering potential.

Odd-Parity Quasiparticle Interference in the Superconductive Surface State of UTe2

Although no known material exhibits intrinsic topological superconductivity, wherein spin-triplet odd-parity electron pairing occurs, UTe2 is now the leading representative of this class. Conventionally, the parity of the superconducting order parameter may be established by using Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging. However, odd-parity superconductors should support a topological quasiparticle surface band (QSB) at energies within the maximum superconducting energy gap. QPI would then be dominated by the electronic structure of the QSB and only reveal the characteristics of the bulk order parameter excursively. Here, we visualize quasiparticle interference patterns of UTe2 and find that, at the (0-11) cleave surface, a new band of Bogoliubov quasiparticles appears only in the superconducting state. QPI visualization then allows study of dispersion of states within this QSB, which we demonstrate exists only within the range of Fermi momenta projected onto the (0-11) surface. Finally, we develop a theoretical framework to predict the QPI signatures of such a QSB at the (0-11) surface of UTe2. Its predictions are most consistent with the experimental results if the bulk superconducting gap function exhibits time-reversal conserving, odd-parity, a-axis nodal, B3u symmetry.

Detection of finite frequency current moments with a dissipative resonant circuit

We consider the measurement of higher current moments with a dissipative resonant circuit, which is coupled inductively to a mesoscopic device in the coherent regime. Information about the higher current moments is coded in the histograms of the charge on the capacitor plates of the resonant circuit. Dissipation is included via the Caldeira-Leggett model, and it is essential to include it in order for the charge fluctuations (or the measured noise) to remain finite. We identify which combination of current correlators enter the measurement of the third moment. The latter remains stable for zero damping. Results are illustrated briefly for a quantum point contact.

Quantum dot dephasing by fractional quantum Hall edge states

We consider the dephasing rate of an electron level in a quantum dot, placed next to a fluctuating edge current in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Using perturbation theory, we show that this rate has an anomalous dependence on the bias voltage applied to the neighboring quantum point contact, which originates from the Luttinger liquid physics which describes the Hall fluid. General expressions are obtained using a screened Coulomb interaction. The dephasing rate is strictly proportional to the zero frequency backscattering current noise, which allows to describe exactly the weak to strong backscattering crossover using the Bethe-Ansatz solution.

Measurement of finite frequency noise cross-correlations with a resonant circuit

The measurement of finite frequency noise cross-correlations represents an experimental challenge in mesoscopic physics. Here we propose a generalisation of the resonant LC circuit setup of Lesovik and Loosen which allow to probe directly such cross-correlations by measuring the charge fluctuations on the plates of a capacitor. The measuring circuit collects noise contributions at the resonant frequency of the LC circuit. Auto-correlation noise can be canceled out by switching the wires and making two distinct measurements. The measured cross-correlations then depend of four non-symmetrized correlators. This detection method is applied to a normal metal three terminal device. We subsequently discuss to what extent the measurement circuit can detect electron-antibunching and what singularities appear in the spectral density of noise cross-correlations.

An electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect

We compute the interference pattern of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Our theoretical proposal is inspired by a remarkable experiment on edge states in the Integer Quantum Hall effect (IQHE). The Luttinger liquid model is solved via two independent methods: refermionization at nu=1/2 and the Bethe Ansatz solution available for Laughlin fractions. The current differs strongly from that of single electrons in the strong backscattering regime. The Fano factor is periodic in the flux, and it exhibits a sharp transition from sub-Poissonian (charge e/2) to Poissonian (charge e) in the neighborhood of destructive interferences.

Photo-assisted shot noise in the fractional quantum Hall regime

The effect of an ac perturbation on the shot noise of a fractional quantum Hall fluid is studied at finite temperature. For a normal metal, it is known that the zero-frequency noise derivative exhibits steps as a function of bias voltage. In contrast, at Laughlin fractions, the backscattering noise exhibits evenly spaced singularities, which are reminiscent of tunneling density-of-states singularities for quasiparticles. The spacing is determined by the quasiparticle charge $νe$ and the ratio of the dc bias with respect to the drive frequency. Photo-assisted transport can thus be considered as a probe for effective charges of the quantum Hall effect.

Electron injection in a nanotube with leads: finite frequency noise-correlations and anomalous charges

The non-equilibrium transport properties of a carbon nanotube which is connected to Fermi liquid leads, where electrons are injected in the bulk, are computed. A previous work which considered an infinite nanotube showed that the zero frequency noise correlations, measured at opposite ends of the nanotube, could be used to extract the anomalous charges of the chiral excitations which propagate in the nanotube. Here, the presence of the leads have the effect that such-noise cross-correlations vanish at zero frequency. Nevertheless, information concerning the anomalous charges can be recovered when considering the spectral density of noise correlations at finite frequencies, which is computed perturbatively in the tunneling amplitude. The spectrum of the noise cross-correlations is shown to depend crucially on the ratio of the time of flight of quasiparticles traveling in the nanotube to the ``voltage'' time which defines the width of the quasiparticle wave-packets injected when an electron tunnels. Potential applications toward the measurement of such anomalous charges in non-chiral Luttinger liquids (nanotubes or semiconductor quantum wires) are discussed.
