Quantum Geometric Tensor Preconditioning for Stable Training of Recurrent Neural Quantum States

Neural Quantum States (NQS) provide a powerful neural network-based variational framework for representing many-body wave functions and solving for ground states. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are particularly promising owing to their relatively low computational cost and their autoregressive property, which enables perfect sampling. Recently, RNNs have been reported to be unstable under curvature-based optimizers such as the minimum-step stochastic reconfiguration (minSR) method. In this paper, we address this perceived limitation and show that minSR can be stabilized through simple regularization techniques, enabling robust training of RNN-based NQS with only a few samples. Our approach outperforms the Adam optimizer on the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model and the one-dimensional cluster state, and provides competitive results on the two-dimensional Heisenberg and $J_1-J_2$ models. This work offers a promising pathway for using modern optimization techniques with autoregressive NQS to address open questions in quantum simulation.

Superfluid phase transition of nanoscale-confined helium-3

We theoretically investigate the superfluid phase transition of helium-3 under nanoscale confinement of one spatial dimension realized in recent experiments. Instead of the 3x3 complex matrix order parameter found in the three-dimensional system, the quasi two-dimensional superfluid is described by a reduced 3x2 complex matrix. It features a nodal quasiparticle spectrum, regardless of the value of the order parameter. The origin of the 3x2 order parameter is first illustrated via the two-particle Cooper problem, where Cooper pairs in the $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals are shown to have a lower bound state energy than those in $p_z$ orbitals, hinting at their energetically favorable role at the phase transition. We then compute the Landau free energy under confinement within the mean-field approximation and show that the critical temperature for condensation of the 3x2 order parameter is larger than for other competing phases. Through exact minimization of the mean-field free energy, we show that mean-field theory predicts precisely two energetically degenerate superfluid orders to emerge at the transition that are not related by symmetry: the A-phase and the planar phase. Beyond the mean-field approximation, we show that strong-coupling corrections favor the A-phase observed in experiment, whereas weak-coupling perturbative renormalization group predicts the planar phase to be stable.

Selberg trace formula in hyperbolic band theory

We apply Selberg's trace formula to solve problems in hyperbolic band theory, a recently developed extension of Bloch theory to model band structures on experimentally realized hyperbolic lattices. For this purpose we incorporate the higher-dimensional crystal momentum into the trace formula and evaluate the summation for periodic orbits on the Bolza surface of genus two. We apply the technique to compute partition functions on the Bolza surface and propose an approximate relation between the lowest bands on the Bolza surface and on the $\{8,3\}$ hyperbolic lattice. We discuss the role of automorphism symmetry and its manifestation in the trace formula.
