Impact of QCD uncertainties on antiproton spectra from dark-matter annihilation

Dark-matter particles that annihilate or decay can undergo complex sequences of processes, including strong and electromagnetic radiation, hadronisation, and hadron decays, before particles that are stable on astrophysical time scales are produced. Antiprotons produced in this way may leave footprints in experiments such as AMS--02. Several groups have reported an excess of events in the antiproton flux in the rigidity range of $10$--$20$ GV. However, the theoretical modeling of baryon production is not straightforward and relies in part on phenomenological models in Monte Carlo event generators. In this work, we assess the impact of QCD uncertainties on the spectra of antiprotons from dark-matter annihilation. As a proof-of-principle, we show that for a two-parameter model that depends only on the thermally-averaged annihilation cross section ($\langle σv \rangle$) and the dark-matter mass ($M_χ$), QCD uncertainties can affect the best-fit mass by up to $\sim 14 \%$ (with large uncertainties for large DM masses), depending on the choice of $M_χ$ and the annihilation channel ($b\bar{b}$ or $W^+ W^-$), and $\langle σv \rangle$ by up to $\sim 10\%$. For comparison, changes to the underlying diffusion parameters are found to be within $1\%$--$5\%$, and the results are also quite resilient to the choice of cosmic-ray propagation model. These findings indicate that QCD uncertainties need to be included in future DM analyses. To facilitate full-fledged analyses, we provide the spectra in tabulated form including QCD uncertainties and code snippets to perform mass interpolations and quick DM fits. The code can be found in this \href{https://github.com/ajueid/qcd-dm.github.io.git}{github} repository.

Lepton portal dark matter at muon colliders: Total rates and generic features for phenomenologically viable scenarios

Lepton portal dark matter (DM) models are a class of models where the DM candidates solely couple to charged leptons through a mediator carrying a lepton number. These models are very interesting since they avoid constraints from direct detection experiments even for coupling of order ${\cal O}(1)$, they have small annihilation cross sections, and can be probed efficiently at lepton colliders. In this work, we consider a minimal lepton portal DM model which consists of extending the SM with two $SU(2)_L$ singlets: a charged scalar singlet and an electrically neutral right-handed fermion. We systematically study the production mechanisms of DM at multi-TeV muon colliders. After considering all the possible theoretical and experimental constraints and studying the phenomenology of lepton flavour violation and DM in the muon-philic scenario, we analyse the production rates of 54 channels (26 channels for prompt DM production and 28 channels for charged scalar production) at multi-TeV muon colliders. Finally, we discuss the possible collider signatures of some channels and the corresponding backgrounds. We find that at least 9 channels for DM production can be very efficient in testing DM with masses up to about $1$ TeV.

Scalar leptoquarks at the LHC and flavour anomalies: a comparison of pair-production modes at NLO-QCD

We analyse scalar leptoquark pair production at the LHC with predictions including $t$-channel lepton exchange contributions up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD. In particular, we calculate NLO-QCD predictions for off-diagonal production channels, {\it i.e.}\ channels that involve two different leptoquark eigenstates and are driven solely by diagrams involving Standard Model leptons in the $t$-channel at leading order, as opposed to diagonal channels where a pair of the same leptoquark eigenstate is produced. We find that reliable theoretical predictions for both channels require NLO accuracy. The relative importance of the off-diagonal modes depends strongly on the considered scenario. In a generic model involving $R_2$ and $S_3$ leptoquarks, at large values of the Yukawa couplings off-diagonal contributions initiated by valence quarks can be up to an order of magnitude higher than the diagonal production. However, we also find that in phenomenologically viable scenarios addressing the flavour anomalies off-diagonal production is generally negligible, with a few exceptions of 10\%--30\% of the total rate depending on the treatment of the charm density in the proton.

Comprehensive study of the light charged Higgs boson in the type-I two-Higgs-doublet model

In the type-I two-Higgs-doublet model, existing theoretical and experimental constraints still permit the light charged Higgs boson with a mass below the top quark mass. We present a complete roadmap for the light charged Higgs boson at the LHC through the comprehensive phenomenology study, focusing on the normal scenario where the lighter \textit{CP}-even Higgs boson is the observed Higgs boson. In type-I, it is challenging to simultaneously accommodate the light mass of the charged Higgs boson and the constraints from theory, electroweak precision data, Higgs data, $b\to s γ$, and direct search bounds. Consequently, the parameter space is extremely curtailed, which predicts somewhat definite phenomenological signatures. We find that the mass of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson, $M_A$, is the most crucial factor in the phenomenology of the charged Higgs boson. If $M_A$ is light, the charged Higgs boson decays mainly into $A W^\pm$. When $M_A$ is above the $A W^\pm$ threshold, the dominant decay mode is into $ τ^\pm ν$. Over the whole viable parameter space, we study all the possible production and decay modes of charged Higgs bosons at the LHC, and suggest three efficient channels: (i) $pp \to H^+ H^-\to [τν] [τν]$; (ii) $pp \to HA/HH/AA \to H^\pm W^\mp H^\pm W^\mp \to [τν] [τν] W W$; (iii) $pp \to H^+ H^-\to [b \bar b W ] [b \bar b W ] $. Based on the sophisticated signal-background analyses including detector simulation, we showed that the significance of the first final state is large, that of the second one is marginal around three, but the third one suffers from huge $t\bar t$ related backgrounds.

Estimating QCD uncertainties on antiproton spectra from dark-matter annihilation

In this talk, we discuss the physics modeling of antiproton spectra arising from dark matter (DM) annihilation or decay in a model-independent manner. The modeling of antiproton spectra contains some intrinsic uncertainties related to QCD parton showers and hadronisation of baryons. We briefly assess the sources of these uncertainties and their impact on antiproton energy spectra for a few selected DM scenarios. The results are provided in tabulated form for future analyses.

Leptoquark manoeuvres in the dark: a simultaneous solution of the dark matter problem and the $R_{D^{(*)}}$ anomalies

The measured branching fractions of $B$-mesons into leptonic final states derived by the LHCb collaboration hint towards the breakdown of lepton flavour universality. In this work we take at face value the so-called $R_{D^{(*)}}$ observables that are defined as the ratios of neutral $B$-meson charged-current decays into a charged $D$-meson, a charged lepton and a neutrino final state in the tau and muon channels. A well-studied and simple solution to this charged current anomaly is to introduce a scalar leptoquark $S_1$ that couples to the second and third generation of fermions. We investigate how $S_1$ can also serve as a mediator between the Standard Model and a dark sector. We study this scenario in detail and estimate the constraints arising from collider searches for leptoquarks, collider searches for missing energy signals, direct detection experiments and the dark matter relic abundance. We stress that the production of a pair of leptoquarks that decays into different final states (i.e. the commonly called "mixed" channels) provides critical information for identifying the underlying dynamics, and we exemplify this by studying the $t τb ν$ and the resonant $S_1$ plus missing energy channels. We find that direct detection data provides non-negligible constraints on the leptoquark coupling to the dark sector, which in turn affects the relic abundance. We also show that the correct relic abundance can not only arise via standard freeze-out, but also through conversion-driven freeze-out. We illustrate the rich phenomenology of the model with a few selected benchmark points, providing a broad stroke of the interesting connection between lepton flavour violation and dark matter.

Studying QCD modeling of uncertainties in particle spectra from dark-matter annihilation into jets

Motivated by various excesses observed by the Fermi-LAT and AMS collaborations, we perform a detailed analysis of QCD uncertainties on particle spectra from dark-matter annihilation (or decay) into jets. When annihilated to SM particles, the final-state annihilation products undergo various complicated processes such as QED and QCD bremsstrahlung, hadronisation, and hadron decays. These processes contain some intrinsic uncertainties which are usually difficult to model and which are neglected in physical analyses. First, we perform several re-tunings of the fragmentation function parameters. Then, we estimate two kinds of uncertainties: {\it (i)} perturbative from QCD showers and {\it (ii)} non-perturbative from hadronisation function. The results are tabulated for a wide range of dark matter masses, $m_χ\in [10, 10^5]~{\rm GeV}$, and annihilation channels. They can be found on Zenodo: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3764809

Type-X two Higgs doublet model in light of the muon $\mathbf{g-2}$: confronting Higgs and collider data

The recent Fermilab measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment yields $4.2 σ$ deviations from the SM prediction when combined with the BNL E821 experiment results. In the Type-X two Higgs doublet model, we study the consequence of imposing the observed muon $g-2$, along with the constraints from theoretical stabilities, electroweak oblique parameters, Higgs precision data, and direct searches. For a comprehensive study, we scan the whole parameter space in two scenarios, the normal scenario where $h_{\rm SM} = h$ and the inverted scenario where $h_{\rm SM}=H$, where $h$ ($H$) is the light (heavy) CP-even Higgs boson. We found that large $\tanβ$ (above 100) and light pseudoscalar mass $M_A$ are required to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly. This breaks the theoretical stability unless the scalar masses satisfy $M_A^2 \simeq M_{H^\pm}^2 \simeq m_{12}^2 \tanβ\approx M_{H/h}^2$. The direct search bounds at the LEP and LHC exclude the light $A$ window with $M_A \lesssim 62.5~$GeV. We also show that the observed electron anomalous magnetic moment is consistent with the model prediction, but the lepton flavor universality data in the $τ$ and $Z$ decays are not. For a separate exploration of the model, we propose the golden mode $pp \to A h/AH \to 4 τ$ at the HL-LHC.

Studies of nonresonant Higgs pair production at electron-proton colliders

The measurement of the Higgs quartic coupling modifier between a Higgs boson pair and a vector boson pair, $κ_{2V}$, is expected to be achieved from vector-boson fusion (VBF) production of a Higgs boson pair. However, this process involves another unmeasured parameter, the trilinear Higgs self-coupling modifier $κ_{λ}$. A sensitivity analysis should target both parameters. Since the LHC cannot avoid the gluon fusion pollution, which becomes severe for non-SM $κ_{λ}$, an electron-proton collider is more appropriate for the comprehensive measurement. In this regard, we study the VBF production of a Higgs boson pair in the $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final state at the LHeC and FCC-he. Performing detailed analysis using the simulated dataset, we devise the search strategy specialized at the LHeC and FCC-he and give a prediction for the sensitivity to both $κ_{2V}$ and $κ_{λ}$. We find that the two electron-proton colliders have high potential: the LHeC has similar exclusion prospects as the HL-LHC; the FCC-he is extremely efficient, excluding the parameter space outside $κ_{2V} \in [0.8, 1.2]$ and $κ_{λ}\in [1, 2.5]$ at 95% C.L. for the total luminosity of $10$ ab$^{-1}$ and 10% uncertainty on the background yields.

Phenomenology of Minimal Leptophilic Dark Matter Models at Linear Colliders

We discuss the phenomenology of a minimal model for GeV-scale Majorana dark matter (DM) coupled to the standard model lepton sector via a charged scalar singlet. The theoretical framework extends the Standard Model by two $SU(2)_L$ singlets: one charged Higgs boson and a singlet right-handed fermion. The latter plays the role of the DM candidate. We show that there is an anti-correlation between the spin-independent DM-Nucleus scattering cross-section ($σ_{\rm SI}$) and the DM relic density. We suggest a scenario that can be tested in both electron-electron and electron-positron collisions using the production of same-sign charged Higgs pairs and mono-Higgs in association with right-handed neutrinos.

Searching for GeV-scale Majorana Dark Matter: inter spem et metum

We suggest a minimal model for GeV-scale Majorana Dark Matter (DM) coupled to the standard model lepton sector via a charged scalar singlet. We show that there is an anti-correlation between the spin-independent DM-Nucleus scattering cross-section ($σ_{\mathrm{SI}}$) and the DM relic density for parameters values allowed by various theoretical and experimental constraints. Moreover, we find that even when DM couplings are of order unity, $σ_{\mathrm{SI}}$ is below the current experimental bound but above the neutrino floor. Furthermore, we show that the considered model can be probed at high-energy lepton colliders using e.g. the mono-Higgs production and same-sign charged Higgs pair production.

A Natural Scotogenic Model for Neutrino Mass \& Dark Matter

In this letter, we propose an extension of the scotogenic model where singlet Majorana particle can be dark matter (DM) without the need of a highly suppressed scalar coupling of the order $O(10^{-10})$. For that, the SM is extended with three singlet Majorana fermions, an inert scalar doublet, and two (a complex and a real) singlet scalars, with a global $Z_{4}$ symmetry that is spontaneously broken into $Z_{2}$ at a scale higher than the electroweak one by the vev of the complex singlet scalar. In this setup, the smallness of neutrino mass is achieved via the cancellation between three diagrams a la scotogenic, a DM candidate that is viable for a large mass range; and the phenomenology is richer than the minimal scotogenic model.

Proceedings of the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting in Korea

We document the activities performed during the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting, that was organised in KIAS (Seoul, Korea) on February 12-20, 2020. We detail the implementation of 12 new ATLAS and CMS searches in the MadAnalysis 5 Public Analysis Database, and the associated validation procedures. Those searches probe the production of extra gauge and scalar/pseudoscalar bosons, supersymmetry, seesaw models and deviations from the Standard Model in four-top production.

Particle spectra from dark matter annihilation: physics modeling and QCD uncertainties

In this talk, we discuss the physics modelling of particle spectra arising from dark matter (DM) annihilation or decay. In the context of the indirect searches of DM, the final state products will, in general, undergo a set of complicated processes such as resonance decays, QED/QCD radiation, hadronisation and hadron decays. This set of processes lead to stable particles (photons, positrons, anti-protons, and neutrinos among others) which travel for very long distances before reaching the detectors. The modelling of their spectra contains some uncertainties which are often neglected in the relevant analyses. We discuss the sources of these uncertainties and estimate their impact on photon energy spectra for benchmark DM scenarios with $m_χ\in [10, 1000]\,$GeV. Instructions for how to retrieve complete tables from Zenodo are also provided.

Two-Higgs-Doublet Model with Soft CP-violation Confronting Electric Dipole Moments and Colliders

We analyze CP-violating effects in both Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) measurements and future analyses at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) assuming a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with "soft" CP-violation. Our analysis of EDMs and current LHC constraints shows that, in the case of a 2HDM Type II and Type III, an $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ CP-violating phase in the Yukawa interaction between $H_1$ (the $125~\textrm{GeV}$ Higgs boson) and fermions is still allowed. For these scenarios, we study CP-violating effects in the neutron EDM and $t\bar{t}H_1$ production at the LHC. Our analysis shows that such an $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ CP-violating phase can be easily confirmed or excluded by future neutron EDM tests, with LHC data providing a complementary cross-check.

Affine gravitational scenario for dark matter decay

Since the current evidence of its existence is revealed only through its gravitational influence, the way dark matter couples to gravity must be then of primary importance. Here, unlike the standard model sector which is typically coupled to metric, dark matter is supposed to couple only to spacetime affine connection through a $Z_2$-symmetry breaking term. We show that this structure leads to a coupling between dark matter, which is considered scalar, and the standard model Higgs potential. This induces dark matter decays into standard model particles through the Higgs which acts as a portal between the visible and the dark sectors. We study thoroughly the resulting decay modes for various mass ranges, and provide relevant bounds on the nonminimal coupling to affine gravity in line with observational data. Moreover, we find that the coupling to Higgs can be sufficiently large to facilitate production of dark matter lighter than 10 GeV at current and future high energy colliders.

Phenomenology of the Inert Doublet Model with a global U(1) symmetry

The inert doublet model is a minimal dark matter model with strong theoretical motivations, where the stability of dark matter is usually achieved by imposing a $Z_2$ parity. We promote the $Z_2$ parity into a global $U(1)$ symmetry and study its phenomenological implications. There are two characteristic features of the model: both the CP-even and CP-odd neutral inert scalars, $h_1$ and $h_2$, become DM candidates; the number of model parameters is one less than that with $Z_2$ parity. We first analyze the constraints from LEP experiments, electroweak precision tests, theoretical stability, Higgs precision data, dark matter relic density, and direct detection experiments. It is found that if the model is required to explain at least 10% of the observed relic density, the theory is extremely limited such that the dark matter mass is about $70\;{\rm GeV}$ and the charged Higgs boson is not very heavy. Focusing on this narrow parameter space, we calculate the production cross sections of almost all the possible mono-$X$ and mono-$XX'$ processes at the LHC. The mono-$Wγ$ process is shown to have high discovery potential with the help of the decay of the intermediate-mass charged Higgs boson into $W^\pm h_{1,2}$. A search strategy is designed to increase the potential discovery of the model for the mono-$Wγ$ signal at both the HL-LHC and the FCC-hh. The optimal cut on $E_T^{\rm miss}/\sqrt{H_T}$ is suggested to maximize the signal significance, being about $0.76$ at the HL-LHC and about $7.5$ at the FCC-hh.
