Synthetic Prefixes to Mitigate Bias in Real-Time Neural Query Autocomplete

We introduce a data-centric approach for mitigating presentation bias in real-time neural query autocomplete systems through the use of synthetic prefixes. These prefixes are generated from complete user queries collected during regular search sessions where autocomplete was not active. This allows us to enrich the training data for learning to rank models with more diverse and less biased examples. This method addresses the inherent bias in engagement signals collected from live query autocomplete interactions, where model suggestions influence user behavior. Our neural ranker is optimized for real-time deployment under strict latency constraints and incorporates a rich set of features, including query popularity, seasonality, fuzzy match scores, and contextual signals such as department affinity, device type, and vertical alignment with previous user queries. To support efficient training, we introduce a task-specific simplification of the listwise loss, reducing computational complexity from $O(n^2)$ to $O(n)$ by leveraging the query autocomplete structure of having only one ground-truth selection per prefix. Deployed in a large-scale e-commerce setting, our system demonstrates statistically significant improvements in user engagement, as measured by mean reciprocal rank and related metrics. Our findings show that synthetic prefixes not only improve generalization but also provide a scalable path toward bias mitigation in other low-latency ranking tasks, including related searches and query recommendations.

Semantic De-boosting in e-commerce Query Autocomplete

In ecommerce search, query autocomplete plays a critical role to help users in their shopping journey. Often times, query autocomplete presents users with semantically similar queries, which can impede the user's ability to find diverse and relevant results. This paper proposes a novel strategy to enhance this service by refining the presentation of typeahead suggestions based on their semantic similarity. Our solution uniquely demotes semantically equivalent queries using an embedding similarity of query suggestions at runtime. This strategy ensures only distinct and varied queries are prioritized, thereby promoting more diverse suggestions for users. To maintain comprehensive query coverage, we incorporate this deduplication process within the query suggestion reranking step. This approach ensures that the broad spectrum of possible queries remains available to users, while eliminating the redundancy and repetitiveness in the suggestion list. In extending this work, we propose using the distance between query embeddings to offer even more diverse suggestions to users using an algorithm similar to maximal marginal relevance. This approach will further ensure the delivery of non-redundant, unique, and pertinent suggestions to users, thus enriching their search experience. We evaluated our method through rigorous AB testing, demonstrating substantial improvements in key metrics. Notably, we observed a statistically significant rise in the search Add-to-Cart rate, signifying an enhanced user engagement and conversion rate. Furthermore, we observed a statistically significant decrease in clicks to ATC, implying that the feature improved the efficiency of the customer's product search journey. Finally, we also noticed a marked reduction in the null page view rate, indicating the increased pertinence and efficiency of user search sessions.

Fluctuation-mediated spin-orbit torque enhancement in the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Ni0.35Cu0.65N

The role of spin fluctuations near magnetic phase transitions is crucial for generating various exotic phenomena, including anomalies in the extraordinary Hall effect, excess spin-current generation through the spin-Hall effect (SHE), and enhanced spin-pumping, amongst others. In this study, we experimentally investigate the temperature dependence of spin-orbit torques (SOTs) generated by Mn3Ni0.35Cu0.65N (MNCN), a member of the noncollinear antiferromagnetic family that exhibits unconventional magnetotransport properties. Our work uncovers a strong and nontrivial temperature dependence of SOTs, peaking near the Néel temperature of MNCN, which cannot be explained by conventional intrinsic and extrinsic scattering mechanisms of the SHE. Notably, we measure a maximum SOT efficiency of 30%, which is substantially larger than that of commonly studied nonmagnetic materials such as Pt. Theoretical calculations confirm a negligible SHE and a strong orbital Hall effect that can explain the observed SOTs. We propose a previously unidentified mechanism wherein fluctuating antiferromagnetic moments trigger the generation of substantial orbital currents near the Néel temperature due to the emergence of scalar spin chirality. Our findings present an approach for enhancing SOTs, which holds promise for magnetic memory applications by leveraging antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations to amplify both orbital and spin currents.

Seasonality Based Reranking of E-commerce Autocomplete Using Natural Language Queries

Query autocomplete (QAC) also known as typeahead, suggests list of complete queries as user types prefix in the search box. It is one of the key features of modern search engines specially in e-commerce. One of the goals of typeahead is to suggest relevant queries to users which are seasonally important. In this paper we propose a neural network based natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to incorporate seasonality as a signal and present end to end evaluation of the QAC ranking model. Incorporating seasonality into autocomplete ranking model can improve autocomplete relevance and business metric.

Higher-order Hall response arises from octupole order and scalar spin chirality in a noncollinear antiferromagnet

Noncollinear antiferromagnets can generate a transverse electrical response known as the anomalous Hall effect, even though they possess almost no net magnetization. The microscopic origin of this behaviour, however, has remained unclear because conventional measurement geometries mix different contributions to the measured response. Here, we show that applying magnetic fields in selected in-plane directions allows us to disentangle the mechanisms underlying the Hall effect in a representative noncollinear antiferromagnet. By suppressing any dipole-related signal, we isolate a purely octupole-driven Hall response that exhibits a characteristic three-fold angular symmetry. At low magnetic fields, we further observe an additional Hall-like contribution that arises from the scalar spin chirality associated with noncoplanar spin textures. Combining symmetry analysis, first-principles calculations, and transport measurements, we reveal that octupole order, dipole moments, and chirality coexist and contribute in distinct field regimes. These findings establish a framework for identifying and controlling complex magnetic order parameters for spintronic applications.

Mechanism of electrical switching of ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers

We study current-induced switching of the Néel vector in CoO/Pt bilayers to understand the underlaying antiferromagnetic switching mechanism. Surprisingly, we find that for ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers electrical pulses along the same path can lead to an increase or decrease of the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, depending on the current density of the pulse. By comparing the results of these electrical measurements to XMLD-PEEM imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure before and after the application of current pulses, we reveal the reorientation of the Néel vector in ultra-thin CoO(4 nm). This allows us to determine that even opposite resistance changes can result from a thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism. Importantly, our spatially resolved imaging shows that regions where the current pulses are applied and regions further away exhibit different switched spin structures, which can be explained by a spin-orbit torque based switching mechanism that can dominate in very thin films.

Laser-induced Creation of antiferromagnetic 180-degree domains in NiO/Pt bilayers

We demonstrate how the antiferromagnetic order in heterostructures of NiO/Pt thin films can be modified by optical pulses. We irradiate our samples with laser light and identify an optically induced creation of antiferromagnetic domains by imaging the created domain structure utilizing the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism effect. We study the effect of different laser polarizations on the domain formation and identify a polarization-independent creation of 180° domain walls and domains with 180° different Néel vector orientation. By varying the irradiation parameters, we determine the switching mechanism to be thermally induced and demonstrate the reversibility. We thus demonstrate experimentally the possibility to optically create antiferromagnetic domains, an important step towards future functionalization of all optical switching mechanisms in antiferromagnets.

A Unified Fading Model Using Infinitely Divisible Distributions

This paper proposes to unify fading distributions by modeling the magnitude-squared of the instantaneous channel gain as an infinitely divisible random variable. A random variable is said to be infinitely divisible, if it can be written as a sum of $n \geq 1$ independent and identically distributed random variables, for each $n$. Infinitely divisible random variables have many interesting mathematical properties, which can be applied in the performance analysis of wireless systems. It is shown that the proposed unification subsumes several unifications of fading distributions previously proposed in the wireless communications literature. In fact, almost every distribution used to model multipath, shadowing and composite multipath/shadowing is shown to be included in the class of infinitely divisible random variables.

Stochastic Ordering of Fading Channels Through the Shannon Transform

A new stochastic order between two fading distributions is introduced. A fading channel dominates another in the ergodic capacity ordering sense, if the Shannon transform of the first is greater than that of the second at all values of average signal to noise ratio. It is shown that some parametric fading models such as the Nakagami-m, Rician, and Hoyt are distributions that are monotonic in their line of sight parameters with respect to the ergodic capacity order. Some operations under which the ergodic capacity order is preserved are also discussed. Through these properties of the ergodic capacity order, it is possible to compare under two different fading scenarios, the ergodic capacity of a composite system involving multiple fading links with coding/decoding capabilities only at the transmitter/receiver. Such comparisons can be made even in cases when a closed form expression for the ergodic capacity of the composite system is not analytically tractable. Applications to multiple access channels, and extensions to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are also discussed.

A New Representation for the Symbol Error Rate

The symbol error rate of the minimum distance detector for an arbitrary multi-dimensional constellation impaired by additive white Gaussian noise is characterized as the product of a completely monotone function with a non-negative power of the signal to noise ratio. This representation is also shown to apply to cases when the impairing noise is compound Gaussian. Using this general result, it is proved that the symbol error rate is completely monotone if the rank of its constellation matrix is either one or two. Further, a necessary and sufficient condition for the complete monotonicity of the symbol error rate of a constellation of any dimension is also obtained. Applications to stochastic ordering of wireless system performance are also discussed.

Applications of Stochastic Ordering to Wireless Communications

Stochastic orders are binary relations defined on probability distributions which capture intuitive notions like being larger or being more variable. This paper introduces stochastic ordering of instantaneous SNRs of fading channels as a tool to compare the performance of communication systems over different channels. Stochastic orders unify existing performance metrics such as ergodic capacity, and metrics based on error rate functions for commonly used modulation schemes through their relation with convex, and completely monotonic (c.m.) functions. Toward this goal, performance metrics such as instantaneous error rates of M-QAM and M-PSK modulations are shown to be c.m. functions of the instantaneous SNR, while metrics such as the instantaneous capacity are seen to have a completely monotonic derivative (c.m.d.). It is shown that the commonly used parametric fading distributions for modeling line of sight (LoS), exhibit a monotonicity in the LoS parameter with respect to the stochastic Laplace transform order. Using stochastic orders, average performance of systems involving multiple random variables are compared over different channels, even when closed form expressions for such averages are not tractable. These include diversity combining schemes, relay networks, and signal detection over fading channels with non-Gaussian additive noise, which are investigated herein. Simulations are also provided to corroborate our results.
