Current driven quantum criticality in itinerant electron ferromagnets

We determine the effect of an in-plane current flow on the critical properties of a 2d itinerant electron system near a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic quantum critical point. We study a model in which a nonequilibrium steady state is established as a result of exchange of particles and energy with an underlying substrate. the current $\vec{j}$ gives rise not only to an effective temperature equal to the voltage drop over a distance of order the mean free path, but also to symmetry breaking terms of the form $\vec{j}\cdot \vec{nabla}$ in the effective action. The effect of the symmetry breaking on the fluctuational and critical properties is found to be small although (in agreement with previous results) if rotational degrees of freedom are important, the current can make the classically ordered state dynamically unstable.

Coulomb Gas on the Keldysh Contour: Anderson-Yuval-Hamann representation of the Nonequilibrium Two Level System

The nonequilibrium tunnelling center model of a localized electronic level coupled to a fluctuating two-state system and to two electronic reservoirs, is solved via an Anderson-Yuval-Hamann mapping onto a plasma of alternating positive and negative charges time-ordered along the two "Keldysh" contours needed to describe nonequilibrium physics. The interaction between charges depends both on whether their time separation is small or large compared to a dephasing scale defined in terms of the chemical potential difference between the electronic reservoirs and on whether their time separation is larger or smaller than a decoherence scale defined in terms of the current flowing from one reservoir to another. A renormalization group transformation appropriate to the nonequilibrium problem is defined. An important feature is the presence in the model of a new coupling, essentially the decoherence rate, which acquires an additive renormalization similar to that of the energy in equilibrium problems. The method is used to study interplay between the dephasing-induced formation of independent resonances tied to the two chemical potentials and the decoherence which cuts off the scaling and leads to effectively classical long-time behavior. We determine the effect of departures from equilibrium on the localization-delocalization phase transition.

Nonequilibrium quantum criticality in open electronic systems

A theory is presented of quantum criticality in open (coupled to reservoirs) itinerant electron magnets, with nonequilibrium drive provided by current flow across the system. Both departures from equilibrium at conventional (equilibrium) quantum critical points and the physics of phase transitions induced by the nonequilibrium drive are treated. Nonequilibrium-induced phase transitions are found to have the same leading critical behavior as conventional thermal phase transitions.

Spin dynamics and violation of the fluctuation dissipation theorem in a non-equilibrium ohmic spin boson model

We present results for the dynamics of an impurity spin coupled to a magnetic field and to two ohmic baths which are out-of equilibrium due to the application of a bias voltage. Both the non-equilibrium steady state and the rate constants describing the approach to steady state are found to depend sensitively on the relative strengths of a magnetic field and a voltage dependent decoherence rate. Computation of physical quantities including the frequency dependent ratio of response to correlation functions and the probabilities of the two spin states allows the extraction of voltage dependent effective temperatures. The temperatures extracted from different quantities differ from one another in magnitude and their dependence on parameters, and in general are non-monotonic.

Molecular transistor coupled to phonons and Luttinger-liquid leads

We study the effects of electron-phonon interactions on the transport properties of a molecular quantum dot coupled to two Luttinger-liquid leads. In particular, we investigate the effects on the steady state current and DC noise characteristics. We consider both equilibrated and unequilibrated on-dot phonons. The density matrix formalism is applied in the high temperature approximation and the resulting semi-classical rate equation is numerically solved for various strengths of electron-electron interactions in the leads and electron-phonon coupling. The current and the noise are in general smeared out and suppressed due to intralead electron interaction. On the other hand, the Fano factor, which measures the noise normalized by the current, is more enhanced as the intralead interaction becomes stronger. As the electron-phonon coupling becomes greater than order one, the Fano factor exhibits super-Poissonian behaviour.

Electron/Nuclear spin domain walls in quantum Hall systems

Motivated by recent all optical NMR experiments\cite{Awschalom1,Awschalom2} on GaAs quantum wells, we propose new experiments that would involve creating spatially modulated nuclear spin profiles. Due to the hyperfine coupling these would appear as spatially modulated Overhauser fields for the electrons that could have an amplitude large enough to cancel or even reverse the external Zeeman field at some places. We discuss 2D electron gas transport in the quantum Hall regime at filling factor $ν= 1$, and demonstrate the existence of collective modes and topological excitations induced in the electron gas by various nuclear spin patterns. We calculate the 1/T$_1$ relaxation rate of the nuclear spins due to coupling with these low lying collective modes and also discuss how transport and the low energy modes would be affected by a highly anisotropic g-tensor, which is special to a GaAs quantum well grown in the $\lbrack 110 \rbrack$ direction.

Interedge Phase Coherence in Quantum Hall Line Junctions

Kang et al. have recently observed a remarkable zero-bias anomaly in the spectrum for electron tunneling between two 2D electron gases separated laterally by a narrow but high barrier in the presence of a perpendicular quantising magnetic field. We argue that this is a result of interedge phase coherence analogous to the interlayer phase coherence in quantum Hall (QHE) bilayer systems. The disruption of the QHE by the barrier is 'healed' by strong coulomb exchange enhancement of the weak tunneling through the barrier.
