Non-uniform $\alpha$-Robust Alikhanov Mixed FEM with Optimal Convergence for the Time-Fractional Allen--Cahn Equation

We investigate a mixed finite element method for the spatial discretization of a time-fractional Allen--Cahn equation defined on a convex polyhedral domain, combined with a nonuniform Alikhanov scheme for the temporal approximation. Under suitable regularity assumptions on the initial data that are weaker than those typically imposed in the literature, we establish regularity results for the solution and its flux. We then derive optimal $L^2$-error estimates, up to a logarithmic factor, for both the solution and the flux. The estimates are robust with respect to the fractional order $\alpha$, in the sense that the associated constants remain bounded as $\alpha \to 1^{-}$. Numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical findings.

On a Non-Uniform $\alpha$-Robust IMEX-L1 Mixed FEM for Time-Fractional PIDEs

A non-uniform implicit-explicit L1 mixed finite element method (IMEX-L1-MFEM) is investigated for a class of time-fractional partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) with space-time dependent coefficients and non-self-adjoint elliptic part. The proposed fully discrete method combines an IMEX-L1 method on a graded mesh in the temporal variable with a mixed finite element method in spatial variables. The focus of the study is to analyze stability results and to establish optimal error estimates, up to a logarithmic factor, for both the solution and the flux in $L^2$-norm when the initial data $u_0\in H_0^1(\Omega)\cap H^2(\Omega)$. Additionally, an error estimate in $L^\infty$-norm is derived for 2D problems. All the derived estimates and bounds in this article remain valid as $\alpha\to 1^{-}$, where $\alpha$ is the order of the Caputo fractional derivative. Finally, the results of several numerical experiments conducted at the end of this paper are confirming our theoretical findings.

Optimal error analysis of a non-uniform IMEX-L1 finite element method for time fractional PDEs and PIDEs

Stability and optimal convergence analysis of a non-uniform implicit-explicit L1 finite element method (IMEX-L1-FEM) is studied for a class of time-fractional linear partial differential/integro-differential equations with non-self-adjoint elliptic part having (space-time) variable coefficients. The proposed scheme is based on a combination of an IMEX-L1 method on graded mesh in the temporal direction and a finite element method in the spatial direction. With the help of a discrete fractional Gr\"{o}nwall inequality, global almost optimal error estimates in $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms are derived for the problem with initial data $u_0 \in H_0^1(\Omega)\cap H^2(\Omega)$. The novelty of our approach is based on managing the interaction of the L1 approximation of the fractional derivative and the time discrete elliptic operator to derive the optimal estimate in $H^1$-norm directly. Furthermore, a super convergence result is established when the elliptic operator is self-adjoint with time and space varying coefficients, and as a consequence, an $L^\infty$ error estimate is obtained for 2D problems that too with the initial condition is in $ H_0^1(\Omega)\cap H^2(\Omega)$. All results proved in this paper are valid uniformly as $\alpha\longrightarrow 1^{-}$, where $\alpha$ is the order of the Caputo fractional derivative. Numerical experiments are presented to validate our theoretical findings.
