Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in the Effective Field Theory Approach at the LHC

We discuss how to perform consistent extractions of anomalous triple gauge couplings (aTGC) from electroweak boson pair production at the LHC in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). After recasting recent ATLAS and CMS searches in $pp\to WZ (WW) \to \ell' ν\ell^+\ell^- (ν_{\ell})$ channels, we find that: (a) working consistently at order $Λ^{-2}$ in the SMEFT expansion the existing aTGC bounds from Higgs and LEP-2 data are not improved, (b) the strong limits quoted by the experimental collaboration are due to the partial $Λ^{-4}$ corrections (dimension-6 squared contributions). Using helicity selection rule arguments we are able to explain the suppression in some of the interference terms, and discuss conditions on New Physics (NP) models that can benefit from such LHC analyses. Furthermore, standard analyses assume implicitly a quite large NP scale, an assumption that can be relaxed by imposing cuts on the underlying scale of the process ($\sqrt{\hat{s}}$). In practice, we find almost no correlation between $\sqrt{\hat{s}}$ and the experimentally accessible quantities, which complicates the SMEFT interpretation. Nevertheless, we provide a method to set (conservative) aTGC bounds in this situation, and recast the present searches accordingly. Finally, we introduce a simple NP model for aTGC to compare the bounds obtained directly in the model with those from the SMEFT analysis.

Lepton Flavor Non-Universality in B decays from Dynamical Yukawas

The basic features of quark and lepton mass matrices can be successfully explained by natural minima of a generic potential with dynamical Yukawa fields invariant under the $[\mathrm{SU(3)}]^5\times \mathcal{O}(3)$ flavor symmetry. If this symmetry is gauged, in order to avoid potentially dangerous Goldstone bosons, and small perturbations are added to exactly fit the observed pattern of fermion masses, the spectrum of massive flavor gauge bosons can naturally explain the hints for new physics in $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ transitions, including $R_K$. In particular, the desired pattern of the Standard Model Yukawa couplings is compatible with a gauged $\mathrm{U(1)}_q$ in the quark sector, and $\mathrm{U(1)}_{μ-τ}$ in the lepton sector spontaneously broken around the TeV scale. In order to explain the aforementioned experimental hints, the corresponding neutral gauge bosons are required to mix, yielding to potentially observable signals in dimuon resonance searches at the LHC.

Confronting lepton flavor universality violation in B decays with high-$p_T$ tau lepton searches at LHC

We confront the indications of lepton flavor universality (LFU) violation observed in semi-tauonic $B$ meson decays with new physics (NP) searches using high $p_T$ tau leptons at the LHC. Using effective field theory arguments we correlate possible non-standard contributions to semi-tauonic charged currents with the $τ^+ τ^-$ signature at high energy hadron colliders. Several representative standard model extensions put forward to explain the anomaly are examined in detail: (i) weak triplet of color-neutral vector resonances, (ii) second Higgs doublet and (iii) scalar or (iv) vector leptoquark. We find that, in general, $τ^+ τ^-$ searches pose a serious challenge to NP explanations of the LFU anomaly. Recasting existing 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC analyses, stringent limits are set on all considered simplified models. Future projections of the $τ^+ τ^-$ constraints as well as caveats in interpreting them within more elaborate models are also discussed.

Toward a coherent solution of diphoton and flavor anomalies

We propose a coherent explanation for the 750 GeV diphoton anomaly and the hints of deviations from Lepton Flavor Universality in B decays in terms a new strongly interacting sector with vectorlike confinement. The diphoton excess arises from the decay of one of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the new sector, while the flavor anomalies are a manifestation of the exchange of the corresponding vector resonances (with masses in the 1.5-2.5 TeV range). We provide explicit examples (with detailed particle content and group structure) of the new sector, discussing both the low-energy flavor-physics phenomenology and the signatures at high $p_T$. We show that specific models can provide an excellent fit to all available data. A key feature of all realizations is a sizable broad excess in the tails of $τ^+ τ^-$ invariant mass distribution in $p p \to τ^+ τ^-$, that should be accessible at the LHC in the near future.

Knocking on New Physics' door with a Scalar Resonance

We speculate about the origin of the recent excess at ~750 GeV in diphoton resonance searches observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments using the first 13 TeV data. Its interpretation as a new scalar resonance produced in gluon fusion and decaying to photons is consistent with all relevant exclusion bounds from the 8 TeV LHC run. We provide a simple phenomenological framework to parametrize the properties of the new resonance and show in a model-independent way that, if the scalar is produced in gluon fusion, additional new colored and charged particles are required. Finally, we discuss some interpretations in various concrete setups, such as a singlet (pseudo-) scalar, composite Higgs, and the MSSM.

Global constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings in effective field theory approach

We present a combined analysis of LHC Higgs data (signal strengths) together with LEP-2 WW production measurements. To characterize possible deviations from the Standard Model (SM) predictions, we employ the framework of an Effective Field Theory (EFT) where the SM is extended by higher-dimensional operators suppressed by the mass scale of new physics $Λ$. The analysis is performed consistently at the order $Λ^{-2}$ in the EFT expansion keeping all the relevant operators. While the two data sets suffer from flat directions, together they impose stringent model-independent constraints on the anomalous triple gauge couplings. As a side product, we provide the results of the combined fit in different EFT bases.

Pseudo-observables in electroweak Higgs production

We discuss how the leading electroweak Higgs production processes at the LHC, namely vector-boson fusion and Higgs+W/Z associated production, can be characterized in generic extensions of the Standard Model by a proper set of pseudo-observables (PO). We analyze the symmetry properties of these PO and their relation with the PO set appearing in Higgs decays. We discuss in detail the kinematical studies necessary to extract the production PO from data, and present a first estimate of the LHC sensitivity on these observables in the high-luminosity phase. The impact of QCD corrections and the kinematical studies necessary to test the validity of the momentum expansion at the basis of the PO decomposition are also discussed.

New Physics Models Facing Lepton Flavor Violating Higgs Decays at the Percent Level

We speculate about the possible interpretations of the recently observed excess in the $h \to τμ$ decay. We derive a robust lower bound on the Higgs boson coupling strength to a tau and a muon, even in presence of the most general new physics affecting other Higgs properties. Then we reevaluate complementary indirect constraints coming from low energy observables as well as from theoretical considerations. In particular, the tentative signal should lead to $τ\to μγ$ at rates which could be observed at Belle II. In turn we show that, barring fine-tuned cancellations, the effect can only be accommodated within models with an extended scalar sector. These general conclusions are demonstrated using a number of explicit new physics models. Finally we show how, given the $h \to τμ$ signal, the current and future searches for $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to e$ nuclear conversions unambiguously constrain the allowed rates for $h \to τe$.

Higgs Pseudo Observables and Radiative Corrections

We show how leading radiative corrections can be implemented in the general description of $h\to 4\ell$ decays by means of Pseudo Observables (PO). With the inclusion of such corrections, the PO description of $h\to 4\ell$ decays can be matched to next-to-leading-order electroweak calculations both within and beyond the Standard Model (SM). In particular, we demonstrate that with the inclusion of such corrections the complete next-to-leading-order Standard Model prediction for the $h\to 2e2μ$ dilepton mass spectrum is recovered within 1% accuracy. The impact of radiative corrections for non-standard PO is also briefly discussed.

On the breaking of Lepton Flavor Universality in B decays

In view of recent experimental indications of violations of Lepton Flavor Universality (LFU) in $B$ decays, we analyze constraints and implications of LFU interactions, both using an effective theory approach, and an explicit dynamical model. We show that a simple dynamical model based on a $SU(2)_L$ triplet of massive vector bosons, coupled predominantly to third generation fermions (both quarks and leptons), can significantly improve the description of present data. In particular, the model decreases the tension between data and SM predictions concerning: i) the breaking of $τ$-$μ$ universality in $B\to D^{(*)} \ell ν$ decays; ii) the breaking of $μ$-$e$ universality in $B \to K \ell^+\ell^-$ decays; iii) the difference between exclusive and inclusive determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. The minimal version of the model is in tension with ATLAS and CMS direct searches for the new massive vectors (decaying into $τ^+τ^-$ pairs), but this tension can be decreased with additional non-standard degrees of freedom. Further predictions of the model both at low- and high-energies, in view of future high-statistics data, are discussed.

Dark Matter and Gauged Flavor Symmetries

We investigate the phenomenology of flavored dark matter (DM). DM stability is guaranteed by an accidental ${\mathcal Z}_3$ symmetry, a subgroup of the standard model (SM) flavor group that is not broken by the SM Yukawa interactions. We consider an explicit realization where the quark part of the SM flavor group is fully gauged. If the dominant interactions between DM and visible sector are through flavor gauge bosons, as we show for Dirac fermion flavored DM, then the DM mass is bounded between roughly $0.5$ TeV and $5$ TeV if the DM multiplet mass is split only radiatively. In general, however, no such relation exists. We demonstrate this using scalar flavored DM where the main interaction with the SM is through the Higgs portal. For both cases we derive constraints from flavor, cosmology, direct and indirect DM detection, and collider searches.

Electroweak bounds on Higgs pseudo-observables and $h \to 4 \ell$ decays

We analyze the bounds on the Higgs pseudo-observables following from electroweak constraints, under the assumption that the Higgs particle is the massive excitation of an $SU(2)_L$ doublet. Using such bounds, detailed predictions for $h\to 4\ell$ decay rates, dilepton spectra, and lepton-universality ratios are presented.

Pseudo-observables in Higgs decays

We define a set of pseudo-observables characterizing the properties of Higgs decays in generic extensions of the Standard Model with no new particles below the Higgs mass. The pseudo-observables can be determined from experimental data, providing a systematic generalization of the "kappa-framework" so far adopted by the LHC experiments. The pseudo-observables are defined from on-shell decay amplitudes, allow for a systematic inclusion of higher-order QED and QCD corrections, and can be computed in any Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach to Higgs physics. We analyze the reduction of the number of independent pseudo-observables following from the hypotheses of lepton-universality, CP invariance, custodial symmetry, and linearly realized electroweak symmetry breaking. We outline the importance of kinematical studies of $h\to 4\ell$ decays for the extraction of such parameters and present their predictions in the linear EFT framework.

Probing anomalous $t\bar t Z$ interactions with rare meson decays

Anomalous couplings of the $Z$ boson to top quarks are only marginally constrained by direct searches and are still sensitive to new particle dynamics at the TeV scale. Employing an effective field theory approach we consider the dimension-six operators which generate deviations from the standard-model vector and axial-vector interactions. We show that rare $B$ and $K$ meson decays together with electroweak precision observables provide strong constraints on these couplings. We also consider constraints from t-channel single-top production.

Cornering Scalar Leptoquarks at LHC

We study implications of large lepton-quark-leptoquark couplings for direct leptoquark searches at Large Hadron Collider. We present all existing flavor constraints on the strength of these couplings assuming that leptoquarks under consideration interact exclusively with charged leptons and quarks of the same generation. We find that these leptoquarks can have sizeable couplings to the Standard Model fermions. This insures a self consistency of our study. We discuss the leptoquark production mechanisms at LHC and demonstrate the importance of inclusion of a t-channel pair production and, in particular, a single leptoquark production through a recast of an existing CMS search at LHC for the second generation leptoquark. Our recast yields the best direct limit on Yukawa coupling of the second generation leptoquark that couples to a muon and a strange quark to date.

Disentangling Flavor Violation in the Top-Higgs Sector at the LHC

We study the LHC phenomenology of flavor changing Yukawa couplings between top quark, Higgs boson, and either an up or charm quark. Such $tuh$ or $tch$ couplings arise for instance in models in which Higgs sector is extended by the existence of additional Higgs bosons or by higher dimensional operators. We emphasize the importance of anomalous single top plus Higgs production in these scenarios, in addition to the more widely studied $t \to h j$ decays. By recasting existing CMS searches in multilepton and diphoton plus lepton final states, we show that bounds on $tuh$ couplings are improved by a factor of 1.5 when single top plus Higgs production is accounted for. We also recast the CMS search for vector boson plus Higgs production into new, competitive constraints on $tuh$ and $tch$ couplings, setting the limits of $BR(t\to hu) < 0.7%$ and $BR(t\to hc) <1.2%$. We then investigate the sensitivity of future searches in multilepton channel and in fully hadronic channel. In multilepton searches, studying the lepton rapidity distributions and charge assignments can be used to discriminate between $tuh$ couplings, for which anomalous single top production is relevant, and $tch$ couplings, for which it is suppressed by the parton distribution function of the charm quark. An analysis of fully hadronic $t+h$ production and $t\to h j$ decay can be competitive with the multilepton search at 100 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV data if jet substructure techniques are employed to reconstruct boosted top quarks and Higgs bosons. To show this we develop a modified version of the HEPTopTagger algorithm, optimized for tagging $t \to h j$ decays. Our sensitivity estimates on $BR(t\to hu)$ ($BR(t\to hc)$) at 100 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV data for multilepton searches, vector boson plus Higgs search and fully hadronic search are $0.22%$ ($0.33%$), $0.15%$ ($0.19%$) and $0.36%$ ($0.48%$), respectively.

Constraining Higgs mediated dark matter interactions

We perform an analysis of Higgs portal models of dark matter (DM), where DM is light enough to contribute to invisible Higgs decays. Using effective field theory we show that DM can be a thermal relic only if there are additional light particles present with masses below a few 100 GeV. We give three concrete examples of viable Higgs portal models of light DM: (i) the SM extended by DM scalar along with an electroweak triplet and a singlet, (ii) a Two Higgs Doublet Model of type II with additional scalar DM, (iii) SM with DM and an extra scalar singlet that is lighter than DM. In all three examples the Br(h to invisible) constraint is not too restrictive, because it is governed by different parameters than the relic abundance. Additional light particles can have implications for flavor violation and collider searches.

Light Higgs and Vector-like Quarks without Prejudice

Light vector-like quarks with non-renormalizable couplings to the Higgs are a common feature of models trying to address the electroweak (EW) hierarchy problem by treating the Higgs as a pseudo-goldstone boson of a global (approximate) symmetry. We systematically investigate the implications of the leading dimension five operators on Higgs phenomenology in presence of dynamical up- and down-type weak singlet as well as weak doublet vector-like quarks. After taking into account constraints from precision EW and flavour observables we show that contrary to the renormalizable models, significant modifications of Higgs properties are still possible and could shed light on the role of vector-like quarks in solutions to the EW hierarchy problem. We also briefly discuss implications of higher dimensional operators for direct vector-like quark searches at the LHC.
