Girasol, a Sky Imaging and Global Solar Irradiance Dataset

The energy available in Micro Grid (MG) that is powered by solar energy is tightly related to the weather conditions in the moment of generation. Very short-term forecast of solar irradiance provides the MG with the capability of automatically controlling the dispatch of energy. We propose to achieve this using a data acquisition systems (DAQ) that simultaneously records sky imaging and Global Solar Irradiance (GSI) measurements, with the objective of extracting features from clouds and use them to forecast the power produced by a Photovoltaic (PV) system. The DAQ system is nicknamed as the \emph{Girasol Machine} (Girasol means Sunflower in Spanish). The sky imaging system consists of a longwave infrared (IR) camera and a visible (VI) light camera with a fisheye lens attached to it. The cameras are installed inside a weatherproof enclosure that it is mounted on an outdoor tracker. The tracker updates its pan an tilt every second using a solar position algorithm to maintain the Sun in the center of the IR and VI images. A pyranometer is situated on a horizontal support next to the DAQ system to measure GSI. The dataset, composed of IR images, VI images, GSI measurements, and the Sun's positions, has been tagged with timestamps.

Color, Flavor, Temperature and Magnetic Field Dependence of QCD Phase Diagram: Magnetic Catalysis and its Inverse

We study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking for quarks in the fundamental representation of $SU(N_c)$ for $N_f$ number of light quark flavors. We also investigate the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature $T$ and/or in the presence of a constant external magnetic field $eB$. The unified formalism for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction model which encodes several well-established features of quantum chromodynamics to mimic the latter as closely as possible. Deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are triggered above a critical value of $N_f$ at $T=0=eB$. On the other hand, increasing temperature itself screens strong interactions, thus ensuring that a smaller value of $N_f$ is sufficient to restore chiral symmetry at higher temperatures. We also observe the well-known phenomenon of magnetic catalysis for a strong enough magnetic field. However, we note that if the effective coupling strength of the model decreases as a function of magnetic field, it can trigger inverse magnetic catalysis in a certain window of this functional dependence. Our model allows for the simultaneous onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and confinement for each case. Qualitative as well as quantitative predictions of our simple but effective model are in reasonably satisfactory agreement with lattice results and other reliable and refined predictions based upon intricate continuum studies of quantum chromodynamics.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin Transformations, Nielsen Identities, Their Equivalence and Implications for QCD

The Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs) represent an important tool for probing the gauge dependence of the correlation functions within the class of linear covariant gauges. Recently these transformations have been derived from first principles in the context of non-Abelian gauge theory (QCD) introducing a gauge invariant transverse gauge field expressible as an infinite power series in a Stueckelberg field. In this work we explicitly calculate the transformation for the gluon propagator, reproducing its dependence on the gauge parameter at the one loop level and elucidating the role of the extra fields involved in this theoretical framework. Later on, employing a unifying scheme based upon the BRST symmetry and a resulting generalized Slavnov-Taylor identity, we establish the equivalence between the LKFTs and the Nielsen identities which are also known to connect results in different gauges.

Masses of Light and Heavy Mesons and Baryons: A Unified Picture

We compute masses of positive parity spin-$1/2$ and $3/2$ baryons composed of $u$, $d$, $s$, $c$ and $b$ quarks in a quark-diaquark picture. The mathematical foundation for this analysis is implemented through a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction, which preserves key features of quantum chromodynamics, such as confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and low energy Goldberger-Treiman relations. This study requires a computation of diquark correlations containing these quarks which in turn are readily inferred from solving the Bethe-Salpeter equations of the corresponding mesons. Therefore, it serves as a unified formalism for a multitude of mesons and baryons. It builds on our previous works on the study of masses, decay constants and form factors of quarkonia and light mesons, employing the same model. We use two sets of parameters, one which remains exactly the same for both the light and heavy sector hadrons, and another where the coupling strength is allowed to evolve according to the available mass scales of quarks. Our results are in very good agreement with the existing experimental data as well as predictions of other theoretical approaches whenever comparison is possible.

Pion and Kaon Structure at the Electron-Ion Collider

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1 GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton in QCD; discuss the special role of the kaon, which lies near the boundary between dominance of strong and Higgs mass-generation mechanisms; and explain the need for a coherent effort in QCD phenomenology and continuum calculations, in exa-scale computing as provided by lattice QCD, and in experiments to make progress in understanding the origins of hadron masses and the distribution of that mass within them. We compare the unique capabilities foreseen at the electron-ion collider (EIC) with those at the hadron-electron ring accelerator (HERA), the only previous electron-proton collider; and describe five key experimental measurements, enabled by the EIC and aimed at delivering fundamental insights that will generate concrete answers to the questions of how mass and structure arise in the pion and kaon, the Standard Model's NG modes, whose surprisingly low mass is critical to the evolution of our Universe.

$γ^\ast γ\to η, η^\prime$ transition form factors

Using a continuum approach to the hadron bound-state problem, we calculate $γ^\ast γ\to η, η^\prime$ transition form factors on the entire domain of spacelike momenta, for comparison with existing experiments and in anticipation of new precision data from next-generation $e^+ e^-$ colliders. One novel feature is a model for the contribution to the Bethe-Salpeter kernel deriving from the non-Abelian anomaly, an element which is crucial for any computation of $η, η^\prime$ properties. The study also delivers predictions for the amplitudes that describe the light- and strange-quark distributions within the $η, η^\prime$. Our results compare favourably with available data. Important to this at large-$Q^2$ is a sound understanding of QCD evolution, which has a visible impact on the $η^\prime$ in particular. Our analysis also provides some insights into the properties of $η, η^\prime$ mesons and associated observable manifestations of the non-Abelian anomaly.

Tracking Elections: our experience during the presidential elections in Ecuador

The world's digital transformation has influenced not only the way we do business, but also the way we perform daily activities. In fact, the past Presidential elections in the United States as well as those in Great Britain (Brexit) and in Colombia (peace agreement referendum) are proof that social media play an important part in modern politics. In fact, this digital political field is filled by political movements and political candidates looking for popular support (number of followers), regular citizens' messages discussing social issues (trending topics flooding social media), or even political propaganda in favor or against politicians or political movements (advertisement). One of the issues with social media in this era is the presence of automatic accounts (bots) that artificially fill accounts with fake followers, create false trending topics, and share fake news or simply flood the net with propaganda. All this artificial information may influence people and sometimes may even censor people's real opinions undermining their freedom of speech. In this paper, we propose a methodology to track elections and a set of tools used to collect and analyze election data. In particular, this paper discusses our experiences during the Presidential Elections in Ecuador held in 2017. In fact, we show how all candidates prepared an online campaign in social media (Twitter) and how the political campaign altered a common follower rate subscription. We discuss that the high presence of followers during the period between the first and second round of elections may be altered by automatic accounts. Finally, we use bot detection systems and gathered more than 30,000 political motivated bots. In our data analysis, we show that these bots were mainly used for propaganda purposes in favor or against a particular candidate.

Partonic structure of neutral pseudoscalars via two photon transition form factors

The $γγ^\ast \to η_{c,b}$ transition form factors are computed using a continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory, and thereby unified with equivalent calculations of electromagnetic pion elastic and transition form factors. The resulting $γγ^\ast \to η_c$ form factor, $G_{η_c}(Q^2)$, is consistent with available data: significantly, at accessible momentum transfers, $Q^2 G_{η_c}(Q^2)$ lies well below its conformal limit. These observations confirm that the leading-twist parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) of heavy-heavy bound-states are compressed relative to the conformal limit. A clear understanding of the distribution of valence-quarks within mesons thus emerges; a picture which connects Goldstone modes, built from the lightest-quarks in Nature, with systems containing the heaviest valence-quarks that can now be studied experimentally, and highlights basic facts about manifestations of mass within the Standard Model.

Multiphoton amplitudes and generalized LKF transformation in scalar QED using the worldline formalism

We apply the worldline formalism to scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) to find a Bern-Kosower type master formula for generalized Compton scattering, on-shell and off-shell. Moreover, we use it to study the non-perturbative gauge parameter dependence of amplitudes in scalar QED and, as our main result, find a simple non-perturbative transformation rule under changes of this parameter in x-space in terms of conformal cross ratios. This generalizes the well-known Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). We also exemplify how the LKFT works in perturbation theory.

$η_{c}$ Elastic and Transition Form Factors: Contact Interaction and Algebraic Model

For the flavor-singlet heavy quark system of charmonia in the pseudoscalar ($η_c(1S)$) channel, we calculate the elastic (EFF) and transition form factors (TFF) ($η_c(1S) \rightarrow γγ^*$) for a wide range of photon momentum transfer squared ($Q^2$). The framework for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) and Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) treatment of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction (CI). We also employ an algebraic model (AM), developed earlier to describe the light quark systems. It correctly correlates infrared and ultraviolet dynamics of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The CI results agree with the lattice data for low $Q^2$. For $Q^2 \geqslant Q_0^2$, the results start deviating from the lattice results by more than $20 \%$. $Q_0^2 \thickapprox 2.5 {\rm GeV}^2$ for the EFF and $\thickapprox 25 {\rm GeV}^2$ for the TFF. We also present the results for the EFF, TFF as well as $η_c(1S)$ parton distribution amplitude for the AM. Wherever the comparison is possible, these results are in excellent agreement with the lattice, perturbative QCD, the results obtained through an SDE-BSE study, employing refined truncations, as well as the experimental findings of the BABAR experiment.

Charmonia in a Contact Interaction

For the flavour-singlet heavy quark system of charmonia, we compute the masses of the ground state mesons in four different channels: pseudo-scalar ($η_c(1S)$), vector ($J/Ψ(1S)$), scalar ($χ_{c_0}(1P)$) and axial vector ($χ_{c_{1}}(1P)$), as well as the weak decay constants of the $η_c(1S)$ and $J/Ψ(1S)$ and the charge radius of $η_c(1S)$. The framework for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDEs) treatment of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction (CI). The results found for the meson masses and the weak decay constants, for the spin-spin combinations studied, are in fairly good agreement with experimental data and earlier model calculations based upon Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations (BSEs) involving sophisticated interaction kernels. The charge radius of $η_c(1S)$ is consistent with the results from refined SDE studies and lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).

Multiphoton amplitudes and generalized LKF transformation in Scalar QED

We apply the worldline formalism to amplitudes in scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) involving open scalar lines, with an emphasis on their non-perturbative gauge dependence. At the tree-level, we study the scalar propagator interacting with any number of photons in configuration space as well as in momentum space. At one-loop we rederive, in an efficient way, the off-shell vertex in an arbitrary dimension and any covariant gauge. Generalizing the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT) for the non-perturbative propagator, we find simple non-perturbative transformation rules for arbitrary x-space amplitudes under a change of the covariant gauge parameter in terms of conformal cross ratios.

The effective QCD phase diagram and the critical end point

We study the QCD phase diagram on the plane of temperature T and quark chemical potential mu, modelling the strong interactions with the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. The phase transition line is found from the effective potential at finite T and mu taking into accounts the plasma screening effects. We find the location of the critical end point (CEP) to be (mu^CEP/T_c,T^CEP/T_c) sim (1.2,0.8), where T_c is the (pseudo)critical temperature for the crossover phase transition at vanishing mu. This location lies within the region found by lattice inspired calculations. The results show that in the linear sigma model, the CEP's location in the phase diagram is expectedly determined solely through chiral symmetry breaking. The same is likely to be true for all other models which do not exhibit confinement, provided the proper treatment of the plasma infrared properties for the description of chiral symmetry restoration is implemented. Similarly, we also expect these corrections to be substantially relevant in the QCD phase diagram.

The QCD phase diagram from Schwinger-Dyson Equations

We study the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). For this purpose we employ the Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDEs) technique and construct a truncation of the infinite tower of equations by demanding a matching with the lattice results for the quark-anti-quark condensate at finite temperature (T), for zero quark chemical potential (mu), that is, the region where lattice calculations are expected to provide reliable results. We compute the evolution of the phase diagram away from T=0 for increasing values of the chemical potential by following the evolution of the heat capacity as a function of T and mu. The behavior of this thermodynamic variable clearly demonstrates the existence of a cross-over for mu less than a critical value. However, the heat capacity develops a singularity near mu approx 0.22 GeV marking the onslaught of a first order phase transition characterized by the existence of a critical point. The critical line continues until mu approx 0.53 GeV where Tc=0 and thus chiral symmetry is finally restored.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Confinement Beyond Rainbow-Ladder Truncation

A non-perturbative construction of the 3-point fermion-boson vertex which obeys its Ward-Takahashi or Slavnov-Taylor identity, ensures the massless fermion and boson propagators transform according to their local gauge covariance relations, reproduces perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime and provides a gauge independent description for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) and confinement has been a long-standing goal in physically relevant gauge theories such as quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this paper, we demonstrate that the same simple and practical form of the vertex can achieve these objectives not only in 4-dimensional quenched QED (qQED4) but also in its 3-dimensional counterpart (qQED3). Employing this convenient form of the vertex \emph{ansatz} into the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator, we observe that it renders the critical coupling in qQED4 markedly gauge independent in contrast with the bare vertex and improves on the well-known Curtis-Pennington construction. Furthermore, our proposal yields gauge independent order parameters for confinement and DCSB in qQED3.

QCD phase diagram from finite energy sum rules

We study the QCD phase diagram at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential by relating the behavior of the light-quark condensate to the threshold energy for the onset of perturbative QCD. These parameters are connected to the chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement phase transition, respectively. This relation is obtained in the framework of finite energy QCD sum rules at finite temperature and density, with input from Schwinger-Dyson methods to determine the light-quark condensate. Results indicate that both critical temperatures are basically the same within some 3% accuracy. We also obtain bounds for the position of the critical end point, mu_{B c} >~ 300 MeV and T_c <~ 185 MeV.

Pion and kaon valence-quark parton distribution functions

A rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations, constrained by existing applications to hadron physics, is employed to compute the valence-quark parton distribution functions of the pion and kaon. Comparison is made to pi-N Drell-Yan data for the pion's u-quark distribution and to Drell-Yan data for the ratio u_K(x)/u_π(x): the environmental influence of this quantity is a parameter-free prediction, which agrees well with existing data. Our analysis unifies the computation of distribution functions with that of numerous other properties of pseudoscalar mesons.
