A condensed matter realization of the axial magnetic effect

The axial magnetic effect, i.e., the generation of an energy current parallel to an axial magnetic field coupling with opposite signs to left- and right-handed fermions is a non-dissipative transport phenomenon intimately related to the gravitational contribution to the axial anomaly. An axial magnetic field emerges naturally in condensed matter in the so called Weyl semi-metals. We present a measurable implementation of the axial magnetic effect. We show that the edge states of a Weyl semimetal at finite temperature possess a temperature dependent angular momentum in the direction of the vector potential intrinsic to the system. Such a realization provides a plausible context for the experimental confirmation of the elusive gravitational anomaly.

Repulsive Casimir Effect with Chern insulators

We theoretically predict that the Casimir force in vacuum between two Chern insulator plates can be repulsive (attractive) at long distances whenever the sign of the Chern numbers characterizing the two plates are opposite (equal). A unique feature of this system is that the sign of the force can be tuned simply by turning over one of the plates or alternatively by electrostatic doping. We calculate and take into account the full optical response of the plates and argue that such repulsion is a general phenomena for these systems as it relies on the quantized zero frequency Hall conductivity. We show that achieving repulsion is possible with thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$, that were recently discovered to be Chern insulators with quantized Hall conductivity.

Floquet Fractional Chern Insulator in Doped Graphene

Fractional Chern insulators are theoretically predicted states of electronic matter with emergent topological order. They exhibit the same universal properties as the fractional quantum Hall effect, but dispose of the need to apply a strong magnetic field. However, despite intense theoretical work, an experimental realization for these exotic states of matter is still lacking. Here we show that doped graphene turns into a fractional Chern insulator, when irradiated with high-intensity circularly polarized light. We derive the effective steady state band structure of light-driven graphene using Floquet theory and subsequently study the interacting system with exact numerical diagonalization. The fractional Chern insulator state equivalent to the 1/3 Laughlin state appears at 7/12 total filling of the honeycomb lattice (1/6 filling of the upper band). The state also features spontaneous ferromagnetism and is thus an example of the spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry along with a topological phase transition.

Interaction driven phases in the honeycomb lattice from exact diagonalization

We investigate the fate of interaction driven phases in the half-filled honeycomb lattice for finite systems via exact diagonalization with nearest and next nearest neighbour interactions. We find evidence for a charge density wave phase, a Kekulé bond order and a sublattice charge modulated phase in agreement with previously reported mean-field phase diagrams. No clear sign of an interaction driven Chern insulator phase (Haldane phase) is found despite being predicted by the same mean-field analysis. We characterize these phases by their ground state degeneracy and by calculating charge order and bond order correlation functions.

Charge instabilities and topological phases in the extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with enlarged unit cell

We study spontaneous symmetry breaking in a system of spinless fermions in the Honeycomb lattice paying special emphasis to the role of an enlarged unit cell on time reversal symmetry broken phases. We use a tight binding model with nearest neighbor hopping t and Hubbard interaction V1 and V2 and extract the phase diagram as a function of electron density and interaction within a mean field variational approach. The analysis completes the previous work done in Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 106402 (2011) where phases with non--trivial topological properties were found with only a nearest neighbor interaction V1 in the absence of charge decouplings. We see that the topological phases are suppressed by the presence of metallic charge density fluctuations. The addition of next to nearest neighbor interaction V2 restores the topological non-trivial phases.

Enhancing the stability of a fractional Chern insulator against competing phases

We construct a two-band lattice model whose bands can carry the Chern numbers C=0,pm1,pm2. By means of numerical exact diagonalization, we show that the most favorable situation that selects fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) is not necessarily the one that mimics Landau levels, namely a flat band with Chern number 1. First, we find that the gap, measured in units of the on-site electron-electron repulsion, can increase by almost two orders of magnitude when the bands are flat and carry a Chern number C=2 instead of C=1. Second, we show that giving a width to the bands can help to stabilize a FCI. Finally, we put forward a tool to characterize the real-space density profile of the ground state that is useful to distinguish FCI from other competing phases of matter supporting charge density waves or phase separation.

Finite frequency magnetoelectric response of three dimensional Topological Insulators

Topological insulators with a time reversal symmetry breaking perturbation near the surface present a magnetoelectric response that is quantized when the frequency of the probing fields is much smaller than the surface gap induced by the perturbation. In this work we describe the intrinsic finite frequency magnetoelectric response of topological insulators for frequencies of the order and larger than the surface gap, including the experimentally relevant case where the system is metallic. This response affects physical observable quantities and will give rise to new finite frequency phenomena of intrinsic topological origin.

Consequences of a condensed matter realization of Lorentz violating QED in Weyl semi-metals

In Lorentz violating quantum electrodynamics (QED) it is known that a radiatively induced Chern-Simons term appears in the effective action for the gauge field, which is finite but undetermined. This ambiguity is shown to be absent in a condensed matter realization of such a theory in Weyl semi-metals due to the existence of a full microscopic model from which this effective theory emerges. Physically observable consequences such as birefringence are also discussed in this scenario.

Effect of finite temperature and uniaxial anisotropy on the Casimir effect with three-dimensional topological insulators

In this work we study the Casimir effect with three-dimensional topological insulators including the effects of temperature and uniaxial anisotropy. Although precise experimental values for the optical properties of these materials are yet to be established, qualitative analysis is still possible. We find qualitatively that the reported repulsive behavior and the equilibrium point are robust features of the system, and are favored by low temperatures and the enhancement of the optical response parallel to the optical axis. The dependence of the equilibrium point with temperature and with the topological magnetoelectric polarizability characteristic of three-dimensional topological insulators is also discussed.

Topological Fermi liquids from Coulomb interactions in the doped Honeycomb lattice

We get an anomalous Hall metallic state in the Honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbors only arising as a spontaneously broken symmetry state from a local nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction V . The key ingredient is to enlarge the unit cell to host six atoms that permits Kekulé distortions and supports self-consistent currents creating non trivial magnetic configurations with total zero flux. We find within a variational mean field approach a metallic phase with broken time reversal symmetry (T) very close in parameter space to a Pomeranchuk instability. Within the T broken region the predominant configuration is an anomalous Hall phase with non zero Hall conductivity, a realization of a topological Fermi liquid. A T broken phase with zero Hall conductivity is stable in a small region of the parameter space for lower values of V .

Tunable Casimir repulsion with three dimensional topological insulators

In this Letter, we show that switching between repulsive and attractive Casimir forces by means of external tunable parameters could be realized with two topological insulator plates. We find two regimes where a repulsive (attractive) force is found at small (large) distances between the plates, canceling out at a critical distance. For a frequency range where the effective electromagnetic action is valid, this distance appears at length scales corresponding to $1-ε(ω) (2/π)αθ$.

Topological insulating phases in mono and bilayer graphene

We analyze the influence of different quadratic interactions giving rise to time reversal invariant topological insulating phases in mono and bilayer graphene. We make use of the effective action formalism to determine the dependence of the Chern Simons coefficient on the different interactions.

Renormalization of Coulomb interaction in graphene: computing observable quantities

We address the computation of physical observables in graphene in the presence of Coulomb interactions of density-density type modeled with a static Coulomb potential within a quantum field theory perturbative renormalization scheme. We show that all the divergences encountered in the physical quantities are associated to the one loop electron self-energy and can be determined without ambiguities by a proper renormalization of the Fermi velocity. The renormalization of the photon polarization to second order in perturbation theory - a quantity directly related to the optical conductivity - is given as an example.

Effect of Coulomb interactions on the optical properties of doped graphene

Recent optical conductivity experiments of doped graphene in the infrared regime reveal a strong background in the energy region between the intra and interband transitions difficult to explain within conventional pictures. We propose a phenomenological model taking into account the marginal Fermi liquid nature of the quasiparticles in graphene near the neutrality point that can explain qualitatively the observed features. We also study the electronic Raman signal and suggest that it will also be anomalous.
