Modelling fission with microscopic input: excitation-energy-dependent fission paths for neutron-induced reactions

To calculate transmission coefficients, current Hauser-Feshbach reaction codes assume a one-dimensional fission path that is both independent of excitation energy and universal across different fission channels. In contrast, microscopic fission studies typically explore multiple collective variables. Predicting observable fission quantities such as cross sections based on microscopic input thus requires a way to reduce the dimensionality of the latter. For spontaneous fission, the least action path (LAP) -- which minimizes the semiclassical action and maximizes the transmission coefficient -- is the solution. We demonstrate that the LAP does not generalize to other fission modes such as neutron-induced or $β$-delayed fission: at finite excitation energy, the LAP generally does not maximize the transmission. A microscopic PES can have multiple coexisting stationary-action paths. We show that these (i) can switch their action ordering as a function of excitation energy and (ii) yield different neutron-induced fission cross sections predictions, yet match known spontaneous fission lifetimes equally well. For the BSkG3 Skyrme-type energy density functional model, the transition from the axially symmetric LAP at zero excitation energy to a path exploiting the triaxial degree of freedom occurs at an excitation energy that is smaller than the neutron separation energy for essentially all actinides and the majority of unknown exotic nuclei.

Large-scale fission data generation with BSkG3

Modeling fission properties, such as barriers and rates, is highly challenging. The most microscopic methods available are based on energy density functionals (EDFs) and rely on a limited set of collective coordinates to describe the evolution of a fissioning nucleus from its ground state to scission. Leveraging the efficiency of the MOCCa nuclear structure code and the predictive power of the BSkG3 EDF, we systematically study fission properties of the heaviest nuclei (roughly 3,300) accounting for (1) axial, triaxial and octupole moment; (2) all nuclei, including odd and odd-odd systems; and (3) fission paths determined via the least-action principle. We present the set of primary fission barriers and spontaneous fission half-lives we obtain and discuss their implications for r-process nucleosynthesis.

Accurate spontaneous fission half-lives from a microscopic large-scale nuclear structure model

We demonstrate the ability of the BSkG3 model to predict large-scale fission properties. In particular, we focus on the description of spontaneous fission half-lives, which are crucial for modeling the r-process. To assess the model accuracy, we compare predicted and experimental values for all nuclei with available data. The combination of BSkG3 predictive power for ground state and fission properties, the inclusion of triaxial and octupole degrees of freedom, the use of microscopic collective inertias, and the minimization of the action make our approach sophisticated yet practical when it comes to large-scale astrophysical applications.

Moments of inertia of rare-earth nuclei and the nuclear time-odd mean fields within exact solutions of the adiabatic theory

We systematically analyse the nuclear moments of inertia determined within the Skyrme and Gogny density functional theories. The time-odd mean fields generated by collective rotation are self-consistently determined by a novel exact iterative solution of the adiabatic time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (ATDHFB) equations. Although details of the results depend on the functional used, the calculated moments of inertia are in good overall agreement with the experimental data, with no adjustable parameters. To show the essential importance of the time-odd mean fields, we compared the ATDHFB moments of inertia with those obtained from the Inglis-Belyaev formula. For Skyrme density functionals, we find strong correlations between the effective mass and the impact of the time-odd mean fields on the rotational and vibrational collective inertia.

Two-center harmonic oscillator basis for Skyrme-DFT calculations (I): formalism and Proof of Principle

We present a new method to solve the nuclear density functional theory (DFT) equations using a two-center harmonic oscillator for Skyrme-like functionals, incorporating pairing and Coulomb interactions. The goal is to efficiently determine the fission and fusion configurations in nuclei. The Coulomb exchange term is evaluated exactly, allowing for a novel approach to neck formation without the Slater approximation, commonly used in space coordinate-based approaches. The new method has been implemented in the code {\sc hfodd}, enabling direct comparison with standard one-center solutions. This first paper focuses on deriving and implementing a methodology based on stable, precise, and exact applications of harmonic oscillator bases for the two fragments, which can either overlap or be separated by arbitrarily large distances. The implementation is tested on two proof-of-principle examples using light nuclei, specifically, $^8$Be and $^{24}$Mg.

Variational approximations to exact solutions in shell-model valence spaces: systematic calculations in the $sd$-shell

We study the ability of variational approaches based on self-consistent mean-field and beyond-mean-field methods to reproduce exact energies and electromagnetic properties of the nuclei defined within the $sd$-shell valence space using the non-trivial USD Hamiltonian. In particular, Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB), variation after particle-number projection (VAPNP) and projected generator coordinate methods (PGCM) are compared to exact solutions {obtained by} the full diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. We analyze the role played by the proton-neutron ($pn$) mixing as well as the quadrupole and pairing degrees of freedom (including both isoscalar and isovector channels) in the description of the spectra of even-even, even-odd and odd-odd nuclei in the whole $sd$-shell.

Symmetry-projected variational calculations with the numerical suite TAURUS I. Variation after particle-number projection

We present the numerical code TAURUS_vap that solves the variation after particle-number projection equations for symmetry-unrestricted real Bogoliubov quasiparticle states represented in a spherical harmonic oscillator basis. The model space considered is invariant under spatial and isospin rotations but no specific set of orbits is assumed such that the code can carry out both valence-space and no-core calculations. In addition, no number parity is assumed for the Bogoliubov quasiparticle states such that the code can be used to describe even-even, odd-even and odd-odd nuclei. The variational procedure can be performed under several simultaneous constraints on the expectation values of a variety of operators such as the multipole deformations, the pairing field or the components of the angular momentum. To demonstrate the potential and versatility of the code, we perform several example calculations using an empirical shell-model interaction as well as a chiral interaction. The ability to perform advanced variational Bogoliubov calculations offered by this code will, we hope, be beneficial to the shell model and ab initio communities.
