Beamfocusing Capabilities of a Uniform Linear Array in the Holographic Regime

The use of multiantenna technologies in the near field offers the possibility of focusing the energy in spatial regions rather than just in angle. The objective of this paper is to provide a formal framework that allows to establish the region in space where this effect can take place and how efficient this focusing can be, assuming that the transmit architecture is a uniform linear array (ULA). A dyadic Green's channel model is adopted, and the amplitude differences between the receiver and each transmit antenna are effectively incorporated in the model. By considering a second-order expansion of the SNR around the intended receiver, a formal criterion is derived in order to establish whether beamfocusing is feasible or not. An analytic description is provided that determines the shape and position of the asymptotic ellipsoid where a minimum SNR is achieved. Further insights are provided by considering the holographic regime, whereby the number of elements of the ULA increase without bound while the distance between adjacent elements converges to zero. This asymptotic framework allows to simplify the analytical form of the beamfocusing feasibility region, which in turn provides some further insights into the shape of the coverage regions depending on the position of the intended receiver. In particular, it is shown that beamfocusing is only possible if the size of the ULA is at least $4.4\lambda$ where $\lambda$ is the transmission wavelength. Furthermore, a closed form analytical expression is provided that asymptotically determines the maximum distance where beamfocusing is feasible as a function of the elevation angle. In particular, beamfocusing is only feasible when the receiver is located between a minimum and a maximum distance from the array, where these upper and lower distance limits effectively depend on the angle of elevation

Available Degrees of Spatial Multiplexing of a Uniform Linear Array with Multiple Polarizations: A Holographic Perspective

The capabilities of multi-antenna technology have recently been significantly enhanced by the proliferation of extra large array architectures. The high dimensionality of these systems implies that communications take place in the nearfield regime, which poses some questions as to their effective perfomrance even under simple line of sight configurations. In order to study these limitations, a uniform linear array (ULA) is considered here, the elements of which are three infinitesimal dipoles transmitting different signals in the three spatial dimensions. The receiver consists of a single element with three orthogonal infinitesimal dipoles and full channel state information is assumed to be available at both ends. A capacity analysis is presented when the number of elements of the ULA increases without bound while the interelement distance converges to zero, so that the total aperture length is kept asymptotically fixed. In particular, the total number of available spatial eigenmodes is shown to depend crucially on the receiver position in space, and closed form expressions are provided for the different achievability regions. From the analysis it can be concluded that the use of three orthogonal polarizations at the transmitter guarantees the almost universal availability of two spatial streams, whereas the use of only two polarizations results in a more extensive region where maximum multiplexing gain is available.

Exploiting Multiple Polarizations in Extra Large Holographic MIMO

The proliferation of large multi-antenna configurations operating in high frequency bands has recently challenged the conventional far-field, rich-scattering paradigm of wireless channels. Extra large antenna arrays must usually work in the near field and in the absence of multipath, which are far from traditional assumptions in conventional wireless communication systems. The present study proposes to analyze the spatial multiplexing capabilities of large multi-antenna configurations under line-of-sight, near field conditions by considering the use of multiple orthogonal diversities at both transmitter and receiver. The analysis is carried out using a holographic approximation to the problem, whereby the number of radiating elements is assumed to become large while their separation becomes asymptotically negligible. This emulates the operation of a continuous aperture of infinitesimal radiating elements, also recently known as holographic surfaces. The present study characterizes the asymptotic MIMO channel as seen by extra large uniform linear and planar arrays, as well as their associated achievable rates assuming access to perfect channel state information (CSI). It is shown, in particular, that for a given distance between the receiver and the center of the array and a given signal quality, there exists an optimum dimension of the multi-antenna surface that maximizes the spectral efficiency.

Near-Field Beamfocusing with Polarized Antennas

One of the most relevant challenges in future 6G wireless networks is how to support a massive spatial multiplexing of a large number of user terminals. Recently, extremely large antenna arrays (ELAAs), also referred to as extra-large MIMO (XL-MIMO), have emerged as an potential enabler of this type of spatially multiplexed transmission. These massive configurations substantially increase the number of available spatial degrees of freedom (transmission modes) while also enabling to spatially focus the transmitted energy into a very small region, thanks to the properties of near-field propagation and the large number of transmitters. This work explores whether multiplexing of multiple orthogonal polarizations can enhance the system performance in the near-field. We concentrate on a simple scenario consisting of a Uniform Linear Array (ULA) and a single antenna element user equipment (UE). We demonstrate that the number of spatial degrees of freedom can be as large as 3 in the near-field of a Line of Sight (LoS) channel when both transmitter and receiver employ three orthogonal linear polarizations. In the far-field, however, the maximum number of spatial degrees of freedom tends to be only 2, due to the fact that the equivalent MIMO channel becomes rank deficient. We provide an analytical approximation to the achievable rate, which allows us to derive approximations to the optimal antenna spacing and array size that maximize the achievable rate

On the Degrees of Freedom of the MISO Interference Broadcast Channel with Delayed CSIT

The Maddah-Ali and Tse (MAT) scheme is a linear precoding strategy that exploits Interference Alignment and perfect, but delayed, channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), improving the degrees of freedom (DoF) that can be achieved for the broadcast channel (BC). Since its appearance, many works have extended the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA) to other multi-user channel configurations. However, little is known about the broadcast channel with multiple cells, i.e. the interference broadcast channel (IBC). In this work, the DoF are studied for the $K$-user $C$-cell multiple-input single-output (MISO) IBC with delayed CSIT (with $K/C$ users per cell). We show that the straightforward application of the MAT scheme over the IBC fails because it requires all interference to be received from the same source. Hence, in this case not all the interference can be cancelled, thus blocking the decoding of the received messages. We call this phenomenon as \textit{interference coupling}, forcing to use the MAT scheme by serving just one cell at a time. In this work, we propose an extension, namely the uncoupled MAT scheme (uMAT), exploiting multiple cells, uncoupling the interference, and achieving the best known DoF inner bound for almost all settings.

Receive Spatial Modulation for Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we consider the downlink of a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) single user transmission system operating in the millimeter wave outdoor narrowband channel environment. We propose a novel receive spatial modulation architecture aimed to reduce the power consumption at the user terminal, while attaining a significant throughput. The energy consumption reduction is obtained through the use of analog devices (amplitude detector), which reduces the number of radio frequency chains and analog-to-digital-converters (ADCs). The base station transmits spatial and modulation symbols per channel use. We show that the optimal spatial symbol detector is a threshold detector that can be implemented by using one bit ADC. We derive closed form expressions for the detection threshold at different signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regions showing that a simple threshold can be obtained at high SNR and its performance approaches the exact threshold. We derive expressions for the average bit error probability in the presence and absence of the threshold estimation error showing that a small number of pilot symbols is needed. A performance comparison is done between the proposed system and fully digital MIMO showing that a suitable constellation selection can reduce the performance gap.

DoF-Delay Trade-Off for the $K$-user MIMO Interference Channel With Delayed CSIT

The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the $K$-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel are studied when perfect, but delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Recent works have proposed schemes that achieve increasing DoF values, but at the cost of long communication delays. This work proposes three linear precoding strategies, formulated in such a way that the achievable DoF can be derived as a function of the transmission delay, thus elucidating its achievable DoF-delay trade-off. All strategies are based on the concept of interference alignment, and built upon three main ingredients: delayed CSIT precoding, user scheduling, and redundancy transmission. In this respect, the interference alignment is realized by exploiting delayed CSIT in order to align the interference at the non-intended receivers along the space-time domain. Finally, the latter part of this work settles that all the proposed strategies work also for constant channels, except for SISO. In such a case, the schemes can be made feasible by resorting to asymmetric complex signaling concepts. This conclusion removes the time-varying channels assumption unnecessarily common along all the literature on delayed CSIT.

Retrospective Interference Alignment for the MIMO Interference Broadcast Channel

The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Interference Broadcast Channel (IBC) with 2 cells and 2 users per cell are investigated when only delayed channel state information is available at the transmitter side (delayed CSIT). Retrospective Interference Alignment has shown the benefits in terms of DoF of exploiting delayed CSIT for interference, broadcast and also for the IBC. However, previous works studying the IBC with delayed CSIT do not exploit the fact that the users of each cell are served by a common transmitter. This work presents a four-phase precoding strategy taking this into consideration. Assuming that transmitters and receivers are equipped with $M,N$ antennas, respectively, new DoF inner bounds are proposed, outperforming the existing ones for $ρ= \frac{M}{N} > 2.6413$.

The DoF of the 3-user ($p,p+1$) MIMO Interference Channel

The \emph{degrees of freedom} (DoF) of the 3-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) with full channel state information (CSI) and constant channel coefficients are characterized when linear filters are employed and $(p,p+1)$ antennas are deployed at the transmitters and receivers, respectively. The point of departure of this paper is the work of Wang et al, which conjectured but not proved the DoF for the configuration tackled in this work. In this work we prove the optimal DoF by means of a transmission scheme based on asymmetric complex signaling (ACS) together with symbol extensions in time and interference alignment (IA) concepts. The paper deals with the $p=2,3$ cases, providing the transmit and receive filters and the tools needed for proving the achievability of the DoF for other values of $p$.

Retrospective Interference Alignment for the 3-user MIMO Interference Channel with delayed CSIT

The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the 3-user multiple input multiple output interference channel (3-user MIMO IC) are investigated where there is delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). We generalize the ideas of Maleki et al. about {\it Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA)} to be applied to the MIMO IC, where transmitters and receivers are equipped with $(M,N)$ antennas, respectively. We propose a two-phase transmission scheme where the number of slots per phase and number of transmitted symbols are optimized by solving a maximization problem. Finally, we review the existing achievable DoF results in the literature as a function of the ratio between transmitting and receiving antennas $ρ=M/N$. The proposed scheme improves all other strategies when $ρ\in \left(\frac{1}{2}, \frac{31}{32} \right]$.

On the Degrees of freedom of the K-user MISO Interference Channel with imperfect delayed CSIT

This work investigates the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the K-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel (IC) with imperfect delayed channel state information at the transmitters (dCSIT). For this setting, new DoF inner bonds are provided, and benchmarked with cooperation-based outer bounds. The achievability result is based on a precoding scheme that aligns the interfering received signals through time, exploiting the concept of Retrospective Interference Alignment (RIA). The proposed approach outperforms all previous known schemes. Furthermore, we study the proposed scheme under channel estimation errors (CEE) on the reported dCSIT, and derive a closed-form expression for the achievable DoF with imperfect dCSIT.

Degrees of Freedom Region of the MIMO X channel with an Arbitrary Number of Antennas

We characterize the total degrees of freedom (DoF) of the full-rank MIMO X channel with arbitrary number of antennas at each node. We elucidate that the existing outer bound is tight for any antenna configuration and provide transmit and receive filter designs that attain this outer bound. The proposed achievable scheme exploits channel extensions in terms of both, symbol and asymmetric complex signaling when the communication is carried out over a constant channel case, and is also applicable to time varying channels. The proposed scheme represents a general framework for the derivation of the total DoF of any two-by-two multiuser channels. Furthermore, the rank-deficient MIMO channels case is naturally addressed, and it is shown that the total DoF of the interference (IC) and MIMO X channels are in general superior to the full rank MIMO case
