A naturally light Higgs without light Top Partners

We demonstrate that the inclusion of a realistic lepton sector can relax significantly the upper bound on top partner masses in minimal composite Higgs models, induced by the lightness of the Higgs boson. To that extend, we present a comprehensive survey of the impact of different realizations of the fermion sectors on the Higgs potential, with a special emphasis on the role of the leptons. The non-negligible compositeness of the $τ_R$ in a general class of models that address the flavor structure of the lepton sector and the smallness of the corresponding FCNCs, can have a significant effect on the potential. We find that, with the $τ_R$ in the symmetric representation of $SO(5)$, an increase in the maximally allowed mass of the lightest top partner of $\gtrsim 1$ TeV is possible for minimal quark setups like the MCHM$_{5,10}$, without increasing the tuning. A light Higgs boson $m_H \sim(100-200)$ GeV is a natural prediction of such models, which thus provide a new setup that can evade ultra-light top partners without ad-hoc tuning in the Higgs mass. Moreover, we advocate a more minimal realization of the lepton sector than generally used in the literature, which still can avoid light partners due to its contributions to the Higgs mass in a different and very natural way, triggered by the seesaw mechanism. This allows to construct the most economical $SO(5)/SO(4)$ composite Higgs models possible. Using both a transparent 4D approach, as well as presenting numerical results in the 5D holographic description, we demonstrate that, including leptons, minimality and naturalness do not imply light partners. Leptonic effects, not considered before, could hence be crucial for the viability of composite models.

Higgs Production and Decay in Models of a Warped Extra Dimension with a Bulk Higgs

Warped extra-dimension models in which the Higgs boson is allowed to propagate in the bulk of a compact AdS$_5$ space are conjectured to be dual to models featuring a partially composite Higgs boson. They offer a framework with which to investigate the implications of changing the scaling dimension of the Higgs operator, which can be used to reduce the constraints from electroweak precision data. In the context of such models, we calculate the cross section for Higgs production in gluon fusion and the $H\toγγ$ decay rate and show that they are finite (at one-loop order) as a consequence of gauge invariance. The extended scalar sector comprising the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the Standard Model scalars is constructed in detail. The largest effects are due to virtual KK fermions, whose contributions to the cross section and decay rate introduce a quadratic sensitivity to the maximum allowed value $y_\ast$ of the random complex entries of the 5D anarchic Yukawa matrices. We find an enhancement of the gluon-fusion cross section and a reduction of the $H\toγγ$ rate as well as of the tree-level Higgs couplings to fermions and electroweak gauge bosons. We perform a detailed study of the correlated signal strengths for different production mechanisms and decay channels as functions of $y_\ast$, the mass scale of Kaluza-Klein resonances and the scaling dimension of the composite Higgs operator.

Physical Constraints on a Class of Two-Higgs Doublet Models with FCNC at tree level

We analyse the constraints and some of the phenomenological implications of a class of two Higgs doublet models where there are flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) at tree level but the potentially dangerous FCNC couplings are suppressed by small entries of the CKM matrix $V$. This class of models have the remarkable feature that, as a result of a discrete symmetry of the Lagrangian, the FCNC couplings are entirely fixed in the quark sector by $V$ and the ratio $v_2 /v_1$ of the vevs of the neutral Higgs. The discrete symmetry is extended to the leptonic sector, so that there are FCNC in the leptonic sector with their flavour structure fixed by the leptonic mixing matrix. We analyse a large number of processes, including decays mediated by charged Higgs at tree level, processes involving FCNC at tree level, as well as loop induced processes. We show that in this class of models one has new physical scalars beyond the standard Higgs boson, with masses reachable at the next round of experiments.

From Tevatron's top and lepton-based asymmetries to the LHC

We define a lepton-based asymmetry in semi-leptonic ttbar production at the LHC. We show that the ratio of this lepton-based asymmetry and the ttbar charge asymmetry, measured as a function of the lepton transverse momentum or the ttbar invariant mass is a robust observable in the Standard Model. It is stable against higher order corrections and mis-modeling effects. We show that this ratio can also be a powerful discriminant among different new physics models and between them and the Standard Model. Finally, we show that a related ratio defined at the Tevatron is also robust as a function of the ttbar invariant mass.

Composite Taus and Higgs Decays

In this talk, we describe the effects of extended fermion sectors, respecting custodial symmetry, on Higgs production and decay. The resulting protection for the Z->b_L b_L and Z->τ_R τ_R decays allows for potentially interesting signals in Higgs physics, while maintaining the good agreement of the Standard Model with precision tests. The setups can be motivated as the low energy effective theories of the composite Higgs models MCHM_5 and MCHM_10, where the spectra can be identified with the light custodians present in these theories. We will show that these describe the relevant physics in the fermion sectors in a simplified and transparent way. In contrast to previous studies of composite models, the impact of a realistic lepton sector on the Higgs decays is taken into account.

Custodial Leptons and Higgs Decays

We study the effects of extended fermion sectors, respecting custodial symmetry, on Higgs production and decay. The resulting protection for the Z->b_L b_L and Z->τ_Rτ_R decays allows for potentially interesting signals in Higgs physics, while maintaining the good agreement of the Standard Model with precision tests, without significant fine-tuning. Although being viable setups on their own, the models we study can particularly be motivated as the low energy effective theories of the composite Higgs models MCHM_5 and MCHM_10 or the corresponding gauge-Higgs unification models. The spectra can be identified with the light custodians present in these theories. These have the potential to describe the relevant physics in their fermion sectors in a simplified and transparent way. In contrast to previous studies of composite models, we consider the impact of a realistic lepton sector on the Higgs decays. We find significant modifications in the decays to τleptons and photons due to the new leptonic resonances. While from a pure low energy perspective an enhancement of the channel pp->h->γγturns out to be possible, if one considers constraints on the parameters from the full structure of the composite models, the decay mode into photons is always reduced. We also demonstrate that taking into account the non-linearity of the Higgs sector does not change the qualitative picture for the decays into τ-leptons or photons in the case of the dominant Higgs production mechanism.

New Higgs Production Mechanism in Composite Higgs Models

Composite Higgs models are only now starting to be probed at the Large Hadron Collider by Higgs searches. We point out that new resonances, abundant in these models, can mediate new production mechanisms for the composite Higgs. The new channels involve the exchange of a massive color octet and single production of new fermion resonances with subsequent decays into the Higgs and a Standard Model quark. The sizable cross section and very distinctive kinematics allow for a very clean extraction of the signal over the background with high statistical significance. Heavy gluon masses up to 2.8 TeV can be probed with data collected during 2012 and up to 5 TeV after the energy upgrade to $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.

The Effective Lagrangian for Bulk Fermions in Models with Extra Dimensions

We compute the dimension 6 effective Lagrangian arising from the tree level integration of an arbitrary number of bulk fermions in models with warped extra dimensions. The coefficients of the effective operators are written in terms of simple integrals of the metric and are valid for arbitrary warp factors, with or without an infrared brane, and for a general Higgs profile. All relevant tree level fermion effects in electroweak and flavor observables can be computed using this effective Lagrangian.

Single Vectorlike Quark Production at the LHC

A gluon resonance G of mass below 1 TeV could be the origin of the t\bar{t} forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron provided that new decay modes G->\bar{q}Q, with q a standard quark and Q its massive excitation, make G broad enough. We consider all the different cases, with q the top, the bottom or a light quark and dominant decay modes Q->Wq' or Q->Zq. We show that current experimental searches are unable to probe the model, but that minimal departures from these analyses can explore a large region of its parameter space for the current LHC luminosity. This includes the challenging case with the new quarks decaying mostly into light quark flavors. In some channels not only the heavy quark but also the massive gluon can be reconstructed, which would stablish the origin of the t\bar{t} asymmetry. Similar analyses can be applied to more general models with new massive gluons and vectorlike quarks.

Phenomenology of Non-Custodial Warped Models

We study the effect of bulk fermions on electroweak precision observables in a recently proposed model with warped extra dimensions and no custodial symmetry. We find that the top-quark mass, together with the corrections to the Zbb vertex and the one-loop contribution to the T parameter, which is finite, impose important constraints that single out a well defined region of parameter space. New massive vector bosons can be as light as 1.5 TeV and have large couplings to the t_R quark, and suppressed couplings to the t_L, b_L and lighter quarks. We discuss the implications for searches of models with warped extra dimensions at the LHC.

Stealth gluons at hadron colliders

We find that a heavy gluon G of mass 800-900 GeV with small, mostly axial-vector couplings to the light quarks and relatively large vector and axial-vector couplings to the top quark can explain the t \bar{t} forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron with no conflict with other top-quark or dijet data. The key ingredient is a complete treatment of energy-dependent width effects and a new decay mode G->qQ, where q is a standard quark and Q a vector-like quark of mass 400--600 GeV. We show that this new decay channel makes the heavy gluon invisible in the t\bar{t} mass invariant distribution and discuss its implications at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Gluon excitations in t tbar production at hadron colliders

We argue that a relatively light massive gluon with mass <= 1 TeV, small purely axial couplings to light quarks and sizable vector and axial couplings to the top quark can reproduce the large forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron without conflicting with the t tbar and the dijet invariant mass distributions measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. We show that realistic Higgsless models with warped extra dimensions naturally fulfil all the necessary ingredients to realize this scenario. While current data is unable to discover or exclude these heavy gluons with masses 850 GeV, they should be observed at the (7 TeV) LHC with a luminosity of the order of 300 pb^{-1}.

Tau Custodian searches at the LHC

The tau lepton can be more composite than naively expected in models of strong electroweak symmetry breaking with tri-bimaximal lepton mixing. New leptonic resonances required by custodial symmetry, the tau custodians, can then be the first signal of this lepton flavor realization. Tau custodians can be very light, decaying almost exclusively into taus. The LHC reach for these new leptons is up to masses of 240, 480 and 720 GeV for sqrt{s}=14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 30, 300 and 3000 fb^{-1}, respectively. Our analysis can be extended to any pair produced particles decaying mostly into taus and Standard Model bosons.

Neutrino Masses from an A4 Symmetry in Holographic Composite Higgs Models

We show that holographic composite Higgs Models with a discrete A4 symmetry naturally predict hierarchical charged lepton masses and an approximate tri-bimaximal lepton mixing with the correct scale of neutrino masses. They also satisfy current constraints from electroweak precision tests, lepton flavor violation and lepton mixing in a large region of parameter space. Two phenomenologically relevant features arise in these models. First, an extra suppression on the lepton Yukawa couplings makes the tau lepton more composite than naively expected from its mass. As a consequence new light leptonic resonances, with masses as low as few hundreds of GeV, large couplings to tau and a very characteristic collider phenomenology, are quite likely. Second, the discrete symmetry A4 together with the model structure provide a double-layer of flavor protection that allows to keep tree-level mediated processes below present experimental limits. One-loop processes violating lepton flavor, like mu -> e gamma, may be however observable at future experiments.
