On an integrable two-component Camassa-Holm shallow water system

The interest in the Camassa-Holm equation inspired the search for various generalizations of this equation with interesting properties and applications. In this letter we deal with such a two-component integrable system of coupled equations. First we derive the system in the context of shallow water theory. Then we show that while small initial data develop into global solutions, for some initial data wave breaking occurs. We also discuss the solitary wave solutions. Finally, we present an explicit construction for the peakon solutions in the short wave limit of system.

The hydrodynamical relevance of the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations

In recent years two nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations have attracted a lot of attention due to their integrable structure. We prove that both equations arise in the modeling of the propagation of shallow water waves over a flat bed. The equations capture stronger nonlinear effects than the classical nonlinear dispersive Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney and Korteweg-de Vries equations. In particular, they accomodate wave breaking phenomena.

Generalised Fourier transform for the Camassa-Holm hierarchy

The squared eigenfunctions of the spectral problem associated to the Camassa-Holm equation represent a complete basis of functions, which helps to describe the Inverse Scattering Transform for the Camassa-Holm hierarchy as a Generalised Fourier transform. The main result of this work is the derivation of the completeness relation for the squared solutions of the Camassa-Holm spectral problem. We show that all the fundamental properties of the Camassa-Holm equation such as the integrals of motion, the description of the equations of the whole hierarchy and their Hamiltonian structures can be naturally expressed making use of the completeness relation and the recursion operator, whose eigenfunctions are the squared solutions.

The Camassa-Holm equation as a geodesic flow for the $H^1$ right-invariant metric

The fundamental role played by the Lie groups in mechanics, and especially by the dual space of the Lie algebra of the group and the coadjoint action are illustrated through the Camassa-Holm equation (CH). In 1996 Misiołek observed that CH is a geodesic flow equation on the group of diffeomorphisms, preserving the $H^1$ metric. This example is analogous to the Euler equations in hydrodynamics, which describe geodesic flow for a right-invariant metric on the infinite-dimensional group of diffeomorphisms preserving the volume element of the domain of fluid flow and to the Euler equations of rigid body whith a fixed point, describing geodesics for a left-invariant metric on SO(3). The momentum map and an explicit parametrization of the Virasoro group, related to recently obtained solutions for the CH equation are presented.

Inverse Scattering Transform for the Camassa-Holm equation

An Inverse Scattering Method is developed for the Camassa-Holm equation. As an illustration of our approach the solutions corresponding to the reflectionless potentials are explicitly constructed in terms of the scattering data. The main difference with respect to the standard Inverse Scattering Transform lies in the fact that we have a weighted spectral problem. We therefore have to develop different asymptotic expansions.

Global solutions of the Hunter-Saxton equation

We construct a continuous semigroup of weak, dissipative solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equations modeling nematic liquid crystals. A new distance functional, determined by a problem of optimal transportation, yields sharp estimates on the continuity of solutions with respect to the initial data.

Geodesic Flow on the Diffeomorphism Group of the circle

We show that certain right-invariant metrics endow the infinite-dimensional Lie group of all smooth orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle with a Riemannian structure. The study of the Riemannian exponential map allows us to prove infinite-dimensional counterparts of results from classical Riemannian geometry: the Riemannian exponential map is a smooth local diffeomorphism and the length-minimizing property of the geodesics holds.

Edge waves along a sloping beach

We construct a family of explicit rotational solutions to the nonlinear governing equations for water waves, describing edge waves propagating over a plane-sloping beach. A detailed analysis of the edge wave dynamics and of the run-up pattern is made possible by the use of the Lagrangian approach to the water motion. A graphical representation of the edge wave is also presented.
