Impact parameter dependence of color charge correlations in the proton

The impact parameter dependence of color charge correlators in the proton is obtained from the light front formalism in light cone gauge. We include NLO corrections due to the $|qqqg\rangle$ Fock state via light-cone perturbation theory. Near the center of the proton, the $b$-dependence of the correlations is very different from a "transverse profile function". The resulting $t$-dependence of exclusive $J/Ψ$ photoproduction transitions from exponential to power law at $|t| \approx 1$ GeV$^2$. This prediction could be tested at upcoming DIS facilities or in nucleus-proton ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs).

An incorrect pre-asymptotic RG flow of scattering amplitudes in QCD towards the unitarity limit

Scattering amplitudes in QCD exhibit a definite RG flow with energy towards the unitarity limit. In this paper we put forward an evolution equation which allows one to modify continuously the pre-asymptotic RG flow towards "saturation" of Wilson line correlators. It preserves the linearly unstable zero field fixed point and the unitarity limit attractor. We present the evolution equations in a form suitable for efficient numerical solution. Hence, the proposed evolution equation in principle permits phenomenological comparisons of our incorrect pre-asymptotic RG flows to the BK/JIMWLK flow of QCD. Ultimately, it may lead to observational constraints on the approach to unitarity, constraining it to be specifically the one of QCD. However, it appears that single-inclusive particle spectra in the forward region of p+A collisions at RHIC alone do not provide stringent constraints on the evolution.

New opportunities at the photon energy frontier

Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) involving heavy ions and protons are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions. UPC photons can be used for many purposes, including probing low-$x$ gluons via photoproduction of dijets and vector mesons, probes of beyond-standard-model processes, such as those enabled by light-by-light scattering, and studies of two-photon production of the Higgs.

Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

Sub-femtometer scale color charge correlations in the proton

Color charge correlations in the proton at moderately small $x\sim 0.1$ are extracted from its light-cone wave function. The charge fluctuations are far from Gaussian and they exhibit interesting dependence on impact parameter and on the relative transverse momentum (or distance) of the gluon probes. We provide initial conditions for small-$x$ Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude with impact parameter and $\hat r \cdot \hat b$ dependence, and with non-zero $C$-odd component due to three-gluon exchange. Lastly, we compute the (forward) Weizsaecker-Williams gluon distributions, including the distribution of linearly polarized gluons, up to fourth order in $A^+$. The correction due to the quartic correlator provides a transverse momentum scale, $q > 0.5$ GeV, for nearly maximal polarization.

Multi-quark matrix elements in the proton and three gluon exchange for exclusive $η_c$ production in photon-proton diffractive scattering

Exclusive production of a $η_c$ pseudo-scalar meson in $γ^{(*)} + p \to η_c + p$ scattering at high energies involves a ${\cal C}$-odd exchange in the $t$-channel. We formulate the description of this process within the high-energy framework of eikonal dipole scattering. We obtain expressions for the light-cone wave function of the $η_c$ required in this framework as well as for the ${\cal C}$-odd amplitudes due to exchange of a single photon, of a photon plus two gluons, and of three gluons. We relate these amplitudes to correlators of the $+$ component of the quark current in the light-cone wave function of the proton. For high transverse momenta these correlators correspond to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) given by diagrams where all exchanged gauge bosons attach to a single quark in the proton. Diagrams involving multi-quark matrix elements potentially sensitive to correlations, screen infrared singularities. Moreover, they are numerically important for configurations where the exchanged bosons nearly share the total momentum transfer. Using two simple models for the three quark Fock state of the proton at $x\simeq0.1$, we find that single photon exchange dominates for $|t|<1.5$~GeV$^2$. Here, the quark GPD could be measured cleanly in $γ^{(*)} + p \to η_c + p$ via single photon exchange. For higher momentum transfer three gluon (`Odderon') exchange is dominant.

Centrality and energy dependence of charged particles in p+A and A+A collisions from running coupling $k_{T}$-factorization

We extend the numerical analysis of the energy and centrality dependence of particle multiplicities at midrapidity in high-energy p+A and A+A collisions from a running coupling $k_T$-factorization formula made in~\cite{Dumitru:2018gjm} by considering two unintegrated gluon distributions that were left out. While a good agreement with the experimental data in A+A collisions is achieved, improving the description of those observables in p+A collisions calls for a better understanding of the proton unintegrated gluon distribution at larger values of $x$ and also the use of a realistic impact parameter dependence.

Extracting many-body color charge correlators in the proton from exclusive DIS at large Bjorken x

We construct a general QCD light front formalism to compute many-body color charge correlators in the proton. These form factors can be extracted from deeply inelastic scattering measurements of exclusive final states in analogy to electromagnetic form factors extracted in elastic electron scattering experiments. Particularly noteworthy is the potential to extract a novel Odderon form factor, either indirectly from exclusive $J/Ψ$ measurements, or directly from exclusive measurements of the $η_c$ or tensor mesons at large Bjorken x. Besides the intrinsic information conveyed by these color charge correlators on the spatio-temporal tomography at the sub-femtoscopic scale at large x, the corresponding cumulants extend the domain of validity of McLerran-Venugopalan type weight functionals from small x and large nuclei to nucleons and light nuclei at large $x$, as well as to non-zero momentum transfer. This may significantly reduce nonperturbative systematic uncertainties in the initial conditions for QCD evolution equations at small $x$ and could be of strong relevance for the phenomenology of present and future collider experiments.

Measuring the Weizsaecker-Williams distribution of linearly polarized gluons at an EIC through dijet azimuthal asymmetries

The production of a hard dijet with small transverse momentum imbalance in semi-inclusive DIS probes the conventional and linearly polarized Weizsaecker-Williams (WW) Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) gluon distributions. The latter, in particular, gives rise to an azimuthal dependence of the dijet cross-section. In this paper we analyze the feasibility of a measurement of these TMDs through dijet production in DIS on a nucleus at an Electron-Ion Collider. We introduce the MCDijet Monte-Carlo generator to sample quark-antiquark dijet configurations based on leading order parton level cross-sections with WW gluon distributions that solve the non-linear small-x QCD evolution equations. These configurations are fragmented to hadrons using PYTHIA, and final state jets are reconstructed. We report on background studies and on the effect of kinematic cuts introduced to remove beam jet remnants. We estimate that with an integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1}/A one can determine the distribution of linearly polarized gluons with a statistical accuracy of approximately 5%.

Particle multiplicities in the central region of high-energy collisions from $k_T$-factorization with running coupling corrections

Horowitz and Kovchegov have derived a $k_T$-factorization formula for particle production at small $x$ which includes running coupling corrections. We perform a first numerical analysis to confront the theory with data on the energy and centrality dependence of particle multiplicities at midrapidity in high-energy p+A (and A+A) collisions. Moreover, we point out a strikingly different dependence of the multiplicity per participant on $N_\text{part}$ in p+Pb vs.\ Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies, and argue that the observed behavior follows rather naturally from the convolution of the gluon distributions of an asymmetric vs. symmetric projectile and target.

Cos(4 phi) azimuthal anisotropy in small-x DIS dijet production beyond the leading power TMD limit

We determine the first correction to the quadrupole operator in high-energy QCD beyond the TMD limit of Weizsaecker-Williams and linearly polarized gluon distributions. These functions give rise to isotropic resp. ~ cos 2 phi angular distributions in DIS dijet production. On the other hand, the correction produces a ~ cos 4 phi angular dependence which is suppressed by one additional power of the dijet transverse momentum scale (squared) P^2.

The small-x gluon distribution in centrality biased pA and pp collisions

The nuclear modification factor $R_{pA}(p_T)$ provides information on the small-$x$ gluon distribution of a nucleus at hadron colliders. Several experiments have recently measured the nuclear modification factor not only in minimum bias but also for central $pA$ collisions. In this paper we analyze the bias on the configurations of soft gluon fields introduced by a centrality selection via the number of hard particles. Such bias can be viewed as reweighting of configurations of small-$x$ gluons. We find that the biased nuclear modification factor ${\cal Q}_{pA}(p_T)$ for central collisions is above $R_{pA}(p_T)$ for minimum bias events, and that it may redevelop a "Cronin peak" even at small $x$. The magnitude of the peak is predicted to increase approximately like $1/{A_{\perp}}^ν$, $ν\sim0.6\pm0.1$, if one is able to select more compact configurations of the projectile proton where its gluons occupy a smaller transverse area $A_\perp$. We predict an enhanced ${\cal Q}_{pp}(p_T)-1 \sim 1/(p_T^2)^ν$ and a Cronin peak even for central $pp$ collisions.

Prompt photon - jet angular correlations at central rapidities in p+A collisions

Photon-jet azimuthal correlations in proton-nucleus collisions are a promising tool for gaining information on the gluon distribution of the nucleus in the regime of non-linear color fields. We compute such correlations from the process $g+A\to q \bar{q} γ$ in the rapidity regime where both the projectile and target light-cone momentum fractions are small. By integrating over the phase space of the quark which emits the photon, subject to the restriction that the photon picks up most of the transverse momentum (to pass an isolation cut), we effectively obtain a $g+A\to q γ$ process. For nearly back-to-back photon-jet configurations we find that it dominates over the leading order process $q+A\to q γ$ by two less powers of $Q_\perp / Q_S$, where $\boldsymbol{Q}_\perp$ and $Q_S$ denote the net photon-jet pair momentum and the saturation scale of the nucleus, respectively. We determine the transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions involved in $g+A\to q γ$ and the scale where they are evaluated. Finally, we provide analytic expressions for $\langle\cos nϕ\rangle$ moments, where $ϕ$ is the angle between $\boldsymbol{Q}_\perp$ and the average photon-jet transverse momentum $\tilde{\boldsymbol{P}}_\perp$, and first qualitative estimates of their transverse momentum dependence.

Bulk viscous corrections to screening and damping in the deconfined phase at high temperature

Non-equilibrium corrections in a hot QCD medium modify the "hard thermal loops" (HTL) which determine the resummed propagators for gluons with soft momenta as well as the Debye screening and Landau damping mass scales. We focus on bulk viscous corrections to a thermal fixed point. The screening and damping mass scales are sensitive to the bulk pressure and perhaps to (pseudo-) critical dynamical scaling of the bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second-order critical point. This would affect the properties of quarkonium bound states in the deconfined phase.

The Weizsäcker-Williams distribution of linearly polarized gluons (and its fluctuations) at small x

The conventional and linearly polarized Weizsäcker-Williams gluon distributions at small x are defined from the two-point function of the gluon field in light-cone gauge. They appear in the cross section for dijet production in deep inelastic scattering at high energy. We determine these functions in the small-x limit from solutions of the JIMWLK evolution equations and show that they exhibit approximate geometric scaling. Also, we discuss the functional distributions of these WW gluon distributions over the JIMWLK ensemble at rapidity $Y\sim 1/α_s$. These are determined by a 2d Liouville action for the logarithm of the covariant gauge function $g^2 \mathrm{tr}\,A^+(q)A^+(-q)$. For transverse momenta on the order of the saturation scale we observe large variations across configurations (evolution trajectories) of the linearly polarized distribution up to several times its average, and even to negative values.

Fluctuations of the gluon distribution from the small-x effective action

The computation of observables in high energy QCD involves an average over stochastic semiclassical small-x gluon fields. The weight of various configurations is determined by the effective action. We introduce a method to study fluctuations of observables, functionals of the small-x fields, which does not explicitly involve dipoles. We integrate out those fluctuations of the gluon field under which a given observable is invariant. Thereby we obtain the effective potential for that observable describing its fluctuations about the saddle point. We determine explicitly the effective potential for the covariant gauge gluon distribution both for the McLerran-Venugopalan (MV) model and for a (non-local) Gaussian approximation for the small-x effective action. This provides insight into the correlation of fluctuations of the number of hard gluons versus their typical transverse momentum. We find that the spectral shape of the fluctuations of the gluon distribution is fundamentally different in the MV model, where there is a pile-up of gluons near the saturation scale, versus the solution of the small-x JIMWLK renormalization group, which generates essentially scale invariant fluctuations above the absorptive boundary set by the saturation scale.

Bulk viscous corrections to screening and damping in QCD at high temperatures

Non-equilibrium corrections to the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in a hot and dense QCD medium modify the "hard thermal loops" (HTL). The HTLs determine the retarded, advanced, and symmetric (time-ordered) propagators for gluons with soft momenta as well as the Debye screening and Landau damping mass scales. We compute such corrections to a thermal as well as to a non-thermal fixed point. The screening and damping mass scales are sensitive to the bulk pressure and hence to (pseudo-) critical dynamical scaling of the bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second-order critical point. This could be reflected in the properties of quarkonium bound states in the deconfined phase and in the dynamics of soft gluon fields.

Particle production in high-energy collisions beyond the shockwave limit

We compute next to eikonal (NE) and next to next to eikonal (NNE) corrections to the Lipatov vertex due to a finite target thickness. These arise from electric field insertions into the eikonal Wilson lines. We then derive a $k_T$-factorization formula for single inclusive gluon production at NNE accuracy and find that nuclear effects are absent. We also analyze NNE corrections to two-gluon production where some of the contributions are found to exhibit corrections proportional to $A^{2/3}$.
