KNO scaling of fluctuations in pp and pA, and eccentricities in heavy-ion collisions

Multiplicity fluctuations at midrapidity in p+p collisions at high energies are described by a negative binomial distribution and exhibit approximate Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. We find that these KNO fluctuations are important also for reproducing the multiplicity distribution in d+Au collisions observed at RHIC, adding to the Glauber fluctuations of the number of binary collisions or participants. We predict that the multiplicity distribution in p+Pb collisions at the LHC also deviates little from the KNO scaling function. Finally, we analyze various moments of the eccentricity of the particle production zone in A+A collisions at RHIC and LHC and find that particle production fluctuations increase fluctuation dominated moments such as the triangularity epsilon_3 substantially.

Initial conditions for dipole evolution beyond the McLerran-Venugopalan model

We derive the scattering amplitude N(r) for a QCD dipole on a dense target in the semi-classical approximation. We include the first subleading correction in the target thickness arising from ~ρ^4 operators in the effective action for the large-x valence charges. Our result for N(r) can be matched to a phenomenological proton fit by Albacete et al over a broad range of dipole sizes r and provides a definite prediction for the A-dependence for heavy-ion targets. We find a suppression of N(r) for finite A for dipole sizes a few times smaller than the inverse saturation scale, corresponding to a suppression of the classical bremsstrahlung tail.

Phenomenology of high gluon density QCD and heavy-ion physics at ISMD 2011: x smaller than ever !

I provide a brief summary of the theory presentations at ISMD 2011 related to the phenomenology of small-x QCD evolution and its application to particle production and fluctuations in high-energy hadron and heavy-ion collisions. I also mention some challenges for quantitative phenomenology which emerged from the LHC, such as understanding the long-range "ridge" in high-multiplicity p+p collisions, the transverse momentum distributions in p+p at semi-hard pT, and the origin and scale of density fluctuations in the initial state of heavy-ion collisions.

A model for gluon production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC with rcBK unintegrated gluon densities

This note is a physics manual for a recent numerical implementation of k_t-factorization with running-coupling BK unintegrated gluon distributions. We also compile some results for Pb+Pb collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.75 TeV, such as predictions for the centrality dependence of the charged particle multiplicity and transverse energy. The model can further be used to obtain initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations of A+A collisions at the LHC.

Renormalization group evolution of multi-gluon correlators in high energy QCD

Many-body QCD in leading high energy Regge asymptotics is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK hierarchy of renormalization group equations for the x evolution of multi-point Wilson line correlators. These correlators are universal and ubiquitous in final states in deeply inelastic scattering and hadronic collisions. For instance, recently measured di-hadron correlations at forward rapidity in deuteron-gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are sensitive to four and six point correlators of Wilson lines in the small x color fields of the dense nuclear target. We evaluate these correlators numerically by solving the functional Langevin equation that describes the Balitsky-JIMWLK hierarchy. We compare the results to mean-field Gaussian and large N_c approximations used in previous phenomenological studies. We comment on the implications of our results for quantitative studies of multi-gluon final states in high energy QCD.

CGC initial conditions at RHIC and LHC

Monte-Carlo implementations of kT -factorization formula with both KLN and running-coupling BK unintegrated gluon distributions for nucleus-nucleus collisions are used to analyze recent experimental data on the particle multiplicities from RHIC(Au+Au@200GeV) and LHC(Pb+Pb@2.76TeV). We also compare the predicted transverse energy at midrapidity to new data from ALICE.

Two-gluon correlations and initial conditions for small-x evolution

We derive the effective action of the hard large-x valence charges up to fourth order in their density. Such non-Gaussian weight functionals contribute at leading order in N_c to the connected two-gluon production diagrams which determine di-hadron correlations. The corresponding diagrams are not necessarily (highly) suppressed by the density of valence charges since their infrared divergences differ from those obtained in a Gaussian theory. Therefore, it appears prudent to include such higher dimensional operators when determining initial ensembles for JIMWLK evolution of higher n-point functions of Wilson lines.

How Wide is the Transition to Deconfinement?

Pure SU(3) glue theories exhibit a deconfining phase transition at a nonzero temperature, Tc. Using lattice measurements of the pressure, we develop a simple matrix model to describe the transition region, when T > Tc. This model, which involves three parameters, is used to compute the behavior of the 't Hooft loop. There is a Higgs phase in this region, where off diagonal color modes are heavy, and diagonal modes are light. Lattice measurements of the latter suggests that the transition region is narrow, extending only to about 1.2 Tc. This is in stark contrast to lattice measurements of the renormalized Polyakov loop, which indicates a much wider width. The possible implications for the differences in heavy ion collisions between RHIC and the LHC are discussed.

Quarkonium in a non-ideal hot QCD Plasma

Substantial anisotropies should occur in the hot expanding QCD plasma produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions due to non-vanishing shear viscosity. We discuss the form of the real-time, hard thermal loop resummed propagator for static gluons in the presence of such anisotropies and the consequences for quarkonium binding. It has been predicted that the propagator develops an imaginary part due to Landau damping at high temperature. This generates a much larger width of quarkonium states than the Appelquist-Politzer vacuum estimate corresponding to decay into three gluons. We argue that this might be observable in heavy-ion collisions as a suppression of the Upsilon(1S) --> e+ e- process. Lastly, we consider the heavy quark (singlet) free energy just above the deconfinement temperature. In the "semi-QGP", F(R) at distances beyond 1/T is expected to be suppressed by 1/N as compared to an ideal plasma.

The ridge in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We show that the key features of the CMS result on the ridge correlation seen for high multiplicity events in sqrt(s)=7TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be understood in the Color Glass Condensate framework of high energy QCD. The same formalism underlies the explanation of the ridge events seen in A+A collisions at RHIC, albeit it is likely that flow effects may enhance the magnitude of the signal in the latter.

Initial Conditions and Global Event Properties from Color Glass Condensate

Perturbative unitarization from non-linear effects is thought to deplete the gluon density for transverse momenta below the saturation scale. Such effects also modify the distribution of gluons produced in heavy-ion collisions in transverse impact parameter space. I discuss some of the consequences for the initial conditions for hydrodynamic models of heavy-ion collisions and for hard ``tomographic'' probes. Also, I stress the importance of realistic modelling of the fluctuations of the valence sources for the small-x fields in the impact parameter plane. Such models can now be combined with solutions of running-coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution to obtain controlled predictions for initial conditions at the LHC.

Forward dijets in high-energy collisions: evolution of QCD n-point functions beyond the dipole approximation

Present knowledge of QCD n-point functions of Wilson lines at high energies is rather limited. In practical applications, it is therefore customary to factorize higher n-point functions into products of two-point functions (dipoles) which satisfy the BK evolution equation. We employ the JIMWLK formalism to derive explicit evolution equations for the 4- and 6-point functions of fundamental Wilson lines and show that if the Gaussian approximation is carried out before the rapidity evolution step is taken, then many leading order N_c contributions are missed. Our evolution equations could specifically be used to improve calculations of forward dijet angular correlations, recently measured by the STAR collaboration in deuteron-gold collisions at the RHIC collider. Forward dijets in proton-proton collisions at the LHC probe QCD evolution at even smaller light-cone momentum fractions. Such correlations may provide insight into genuine differences between the JIMWLK and BK approaches.

Two-particle correlations in high energy collisions and the gluon four-point function

We derive the rapidity evolution equation for the gluon four-point function in the dilute regime and at small x from the JIMWLK functional equation. We show that beyond leading order in Nc the mean field (Gaussian) approximation where the four point function is factorized into a product of two point functions is violated. We calculate these factorization breaking terms and show that they contribute at leading order in Nc to correlations of two produced gluons as a function of their relative rapidity and azimuthal angle, for generic (rather than back-to-back) angles. Such two-particle correlations have been studied experimentally at the BNL-RHIC collider and could be scrutinized also for pp (and, in the future, also AA) collisions at the CERN-LHC accelerator.

Thermal Width of the $Υ$ at Large t' Hooft Coupling

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to show that the heavy quark (static) potential in a strongly-coupled plasma develops an imaginary part at finite temperature. Thus, deeply bound heavy quarkonia states acquire a small nonzero thermal width when the t'Hooft coupling $λ=g^2 N_c \gg 1$ and the number of colors $N_c \to \infty$. In the dual gravity description, this imaginary contribution comes from thermal fluctuations around the bottom of the classical sagging string in the bulk that connects the heavy quarks located at the boundary. We predict a strong suppression of $Υ$'s in heavy-ion collisions and discuss how this may be used to estimate the initial temperature.

Quarkonium in a viscous QGP

I discuss viscosity corrections to thermal effects on the static QCD potential within hard-thermal loop resummed perturbation theory and for a strongly coupled, large-N_c conformal field theory dual to five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. I also present model predictions for quarkonium binding energies in the deconfined phase and for suppression of R_{AA}(Upsilon --> e+ e-).

The Heavy Quark Potential as a Function of Shear Viscosity at Strong Coupling

We determine finite temperature corrections to the heavy-quark (static) potential as a function of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in a strongly coupled, large-$N_c$ conformal field theory dual to five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that these corrections are even smaller than those predicted by perturbative QCD at distances relevant for small bound states in a deconfined plasma. Obtaining the dominant temperature and viscosity dependence of quarkonium binding energies will require a theory where conformal invariance is broken in such a way that the free energy associated with a single heavy quark is not just a pure entropy contribution.

The imaginary part of the static gluon propagator in an anisotropic (viscous) QCD plasma

We determine viscosity corrections to the retarded, advanced and symmetric gluon self energies and to the static propagator in the weak-coupling "hard loop" approximation to high-temperature QCD. We apply these results to calculate the imaginary part of the heavy-quark potential which is found to be smaller (in magnitude) than at vanishing viscosity. This implies a smaller decay width of quarkonium bound states in an anisotropic plasma.

Quarkonium states in an anisotropic QCD plasma

We consider quarkonium in a hot QCD plasma which, due to expansion and non-zero viscosity, exhibits a local anisotropy in momentum space. At short distances the heavy-quark potential is known at tree level from the hard-thermal loop resummed gluon propagator in anisotropic perturbative QCD. The potential at long distances is modeled as a QCD string which is screened at the same scale as the Coulomb field. At asymptotic separation the potential energy is non-zero and inversely proportional to the temperature. We obtain numerical solutions of the three-dimensional Schroedinger equation for this potential. We find that quarkonium binding is stronger at non-vanishing viscosity and expansion rate, and that the anisotropy leads to polarization of the P-wave states.
