Gravitational waves from a supercooled electroweak phase transition and their detection with pulsar timing arrays

We investigate the properties of a stochastic gravitational wave background produced by a first-order electroweak phase transition in the regime of extreme supercooling. We study a scenario whereby the percolation temperature that signifies the completion of the transition, $T_p$, can be as low as a few MeV (nucleosynthesis temperature), while most of the true vacuum bubbles are formed much earlier at the nucleation temperature, $T_n\sim 50$ GeV. This implies that the gravitational wave spectrum is mainly produced by the collisions of large bubbles and characterised by a large amplitude and a peak frequency as low as $f \sim 10^{-9}-10^{-7}$ Hz. We show that such a scenario can occur in (but not limited to) a model based on a non-linear realisation of the electroweak gauge group, such that the Higgs vacuum configuration is altered by a cubic coupling. In order to carefully quantify the evolution of the phase transition of this model over such a wide temperature range, we go beyond the usual fast transition approximation, taking into account the expansion of the Universe as well as the behaviour of the nucleation probability at low temperatures. Our computation shows that there exists a range of parameters for which the gravitational wave spectrum lies at the edge between the exclusion limits of current pulsar timing array experiments and the detection band of the future Square Kilometre Array observatory.

Constraining non-commutative space-time from GW150914

The gravitational wave signal GW150914, recently detected by LIGO and Virgo collaborations, is used to place a bound on the scale of quantum fuzziness of non-commutative space-time. We show that the leading non-commutative correction to the phase of the gravitational waves produced by a binary system appears at the 2nd order of the post- Newtonian expansion. This correction is proportional to $\Lambda^2 \equiv |\theta^{0i}|^2/(l_P t_P)^2$, where $\theta^{\mu \nu}$ is the antisymmetric tensor of non-commutativity. To comply with GW150914 data, we find that $\sqrt{\Lambda} \lesssim 6$, namely less than one order of magnitude above the Planck scale. This is the most stringent bound on non-commutative scale, exceeding the previous constraints from particle physics processes by $\sim 15$ orders of magnitude.

Gravitational Waves from the Phase Transition of a Non-linearly Realised Electroweak Gauge Symmetry

Within the Standard Model with non-linearly realised electroweak symmetry, the LHC Higgs boson may reside in a singlet representation of the gauge group. Several new interactions are then allowed, including anomalous Higgs self-couplings, which may drive the electroweak phase transition to be strongly first-order. In this paper we investigate the cosmological electroweak phase transition in a simplified model with an anomalous Higgs cubic self- coupling. We look at the feasibility of detecting gravitational waves produced during such a transition in the early universe by future space-based experiments. We find that for the range of relatively large cubic couplings, $111~{\rm GeV}~ \lesssim |\kappa| \lesssim 118~{\rm GeV}$, $\sim $mHz frequency gravitational waves can be observed by eLISA, while BBO will potentially be able to detect waves in a wider frequency range, $0.1-10~$mHz.

Scale-Invariant Models with One-Loop Neutrino Mass and Dark Matter Candidates

We construct a list of minimal scale-invariant models at the TeV scale that generate one-loop neutrino mass and give viable dark matter candidates. The models generically contain a singlet scalar and a $Z_2$-odd sector comprised of singlet, doublet and/or triplet SU(2) multiplets. The dark matter may reside in a single multiplet or arise as an admixture of several multiplets. We find fifteen independent models, for which the dark matter is a viable candidate and neutrino mass results from a diagram with just one of the irreducible scale-invariant one-loop topologies. Further "non-pure" cases give hybrid one-/two-loop masses. All models predict new TeV scale physics, including a singlet scalar that generically mixes with the Higgs boson.

Fermions in Rotating Reference Frames

Current quantisations of fermions in cylindrical coordinates are shown to be inadequate in calculating some single-particle expectation values. This paper develops an alternate quantisation, applicable to one-particle states, which is generalised to rotating frames in cylindrical coordinates. Using this quantization, an explicit calculation of the velocity of a flat space free fermion as observed by a rotating observer is presented. This calculation demonstrates the validity of this quantisation and the cancellation of non-inertial rotational effects in the velocity, naively expected from the mixing of particle and anti-particle field operators.

Observable Zitterbewegung in Curved Spacetimes

Zitterbewegung, as it was originally described by Schr\"odinger, is an unphysical, non-observable effect. We verify whether the effect can be observed in non-inertial reference frames/curved spacetimes, where the ambiguity in defining particle states results in a mixing of positive and negative frequency modes. We explicitly demonstrate that such a mixing is in fact necessary to obtain the correct classical value for a particle's velocity in a uniformly accelerated reference frame, whereas in cosmological spacetime a particle does indeed exhibit Zitterbewegung.
