Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone inflation with $Z_N$ symmetric waterfall fields

We propose a hybrid inflation model where a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson inflaton couples to $N$ waterfall scalar fields respecting a $Z_N$ symmetry. We identify the phases for the inflation and the consequent waterfall transition, concretely, in $Z_2$, $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ cases. From the Coleman-Weinberg potential for the inflaton, we show that the quadratically divergent corrections coming from the waterfall sector are cancelled due to the $Z_N$ symmetry, while the logarithmically divergent corrections are absent only for $N>2$, ensuring the radiative stability of the inflaton potential. We show the parameter space for a successful inflation with the loop-corrected inflaton potential in each model and compare the results between different discrete symmetries. We further analyze the vacuum structure of the models and the reheating process due to the $Z_N$-invariant Higgs-portal couplings for the waterfall fields. We find that the maximum temperature can be smaller than the mass of the waterfall field condensate such that the $Z_N$ symmetry is not restored after reheating and there is no domain wall problem in the models. We also comment on the possibility of multi-component dark matter from the $Z_N$ partners of the waterfall field condensate.

Fermion (non)reheating with a quartic inflaton potential

Any viable inflationary model must account for reheating of the universe prior to the onset of primordial nucleosynthesis. In this work, we study the (p)reheating mechanism for an inflaton field with a quartic minimum of the T-model kind with coupling $λ$, prior to and post fragmentation, making a clear distinction between the two regimes. We assume that the main particle production channel corresponds to the decay into a pair of spin 1/2 fermions via Yukawa-like interactions. On top of its decays, we also consider the self-interaction of the inflaton, which sources the resonant growth of inflaton inhomogeneities, possibly leading to its eventual fragmentation. By means of a combination of non-perturbative (Heisenberg/Bogoliubov) and perturbative (Boltzmann) methods, we find that for Yukawa couplings that seemed to be intuitively perturbative, such as $y\gtrsim 10^{-8}$ ($y^2/λ\gtrsim 3\times10^{-5}$), parametric resonance, kinematic blocking, and Pauli suppression effects cannot be ignored. Additionally, we show that achieving $ρ_ϕ\sim ρ_ψ$ prior to fragmentation requires large couplings, $y\gtrsim 0.2$ ($y^2/λ\gtrsim 10^{10}$), which needs a detailed study of backreaction and radiative corrections. Thus the rest of our work constitutes studying post-fragmentation fermion production where we conclude that, in general, reheating in this setup is not possible and thus we conclude that in order to successfully reheat, one must invoke a coupling to a integer- and/or 0-spin particle like a scalar boson.

Inflation models with Peccei-Quinn symmetry and axion kinetic misalignment

We propose a consistent framework with the $U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry for obtaining the initial condition for axion kinetic misalignment from inflation. We introduce a PQ complex scalar field and an extra Higgs doublet, which are conformally coupled to gravity, and three right-handed neutrinos for the seesaw mechanism. In the DFSZ type scenarios for the axion, we obtain the PQ anomalies from the Standard Model quarks carrying nonzero PQ charges in some of two Higgs doublet models, solving the strong CP problem by the QCD potential for the axion. Assuming that the PQ symmetry is explicitly violated in the scalar potential by quantum gravity effects, we show that a sufficiently large initial axion velocity can be obtained at the end inflation while avoiding the axion quality problem. As inflation is driven by the radial distance from the origin in the space of scalar fields close to the pole of the kinetic terms in the Einstein frame, we obtain successful inflationary predictions and set the initial axion velocity at the end of inflation. Focusing on the pure PQ inflation with a small running quartic coupling for the PQ field, we discuss the post-inflationary dynamics for the inflaton and the axion. As a result, we show that a sufficiently high reheating temperature, can be obtained dominantly from the Higgs-portal couplings to the PQ field, while being consistent with axion kinetic misalignment, the stability for the Higgs fields during inflation and the non-restoration of the PQ symmetry after reheating.

Peccei-Quinn Inflation at the Pole and Axion Kinetic Misalignment

We propose a minimal extension of the Standard Model with the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) scalar field and explain the relic density of the QCD axion through the kinetic misalignment with a relatively small axion decay constant. To this purpose, we consider a slow-roll inflation from the radial component of the PQ field with the PQ conserving potential near the pole of its kinetic term and investigate the post-inflationary dynamics of the PQ field for reheating. The angular mode of the PQ field, identified with the QCD axion, receives a nonzero velocity during inflation due to the PQ violating potential, evolving with an approximately conserved Noether PQ charge. We determine the reheating temperature from the perturbative decays and scattering processes of the inflaton and obtain dark radiation from the axions produced from the inflaton scattering at a testable level in the future Cosmic Microwave Background experiments. We show the correlation between the reheating temperature, the initial velocity of the axion and the axion decay constant, realizing the axion kinetic misalignment for the correct relic density.

Higgs Inflation at the Pole

We propose a novel possibility for Higgs inflation where the perturbative unitarity below the Planck scale is ensured by construction and the successful predictions for inflation are accommodated. The conformal gravity coupling for the Higgs field leads to the proximity of the effective Planck mass to zero in the Jordan frame during inflation, corresponding to a pole in the Higgs kinetic term in the Einstein frame. Requiring the Higgs potential to vanish at the conformal pole in the effective theory in the Jordan frame, we make a robust prediction of the successful Higgs inflation. For a successful Higgs inflation at the pole, we take the running quartic coupling for the Higgs field to be small enough at the inflation scale, being consistent with the low-energy data, but we need a nontrivial extension of the SM with extra scalar or gauge fields in order to keep the running Higgs quartic coupling small during inflation. Performing the perturbative analysis of reheating with the known couplings of the SM particles to the Higgs boson, we show that a concrete realization of the Higgs pole inflation can be pinned down by the reheating processes with a general equation of state for the Higgs inflaton. We illustrate some extensions of the simple Higgs pole inflation to the general pole expansions, the running Higgs quartic coupling in the Standard Model and its extension with a singlet scalar field, a supergravity embedding of the Higgs pole inflation.

The $SU(2)_D$ lepton portals for muon $g-2$, $W$ boson mass and dark matter

We propose a novel model which extends the Standard Model (SM) by introducing a $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry. In this model, a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet can contribute to the muon $g-2$ anomaly and the $W$ boson mass, remaining in tune with the recent experimental results. At the same time, the isospin charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ becomes a plausible candidate for Dark Matter(DM). We find that the resulting parameter space can fit the muon $g-2$, the $W$ boson mass and the DM constraints simultaneously.

The $SU(2)_D$ lepton portals for muon $g-2$, $W$ boson mass and dark matter

We propose a novel model for lepton flavor and dark matter based on the $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry and vector-like leptons in its fundamental representations. We introduce a dark $SU(2)_D$ Higgs doublet and a Higgs bi-doublet for the mass mixing between the vector-like lepton and the lepton. As a result, the seesaw lepton masses are generated and there are sizable one-loop contributions to the muon $g-2$ via the $SU(2)_D$ gauge bosons and the relatively heavy vector-like lepton, as indicated in Fermilab E989. The tree-level mass mixing between the $Z$ boson and the isospin neutral gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ in our model accounts for the shift in the $W$ boson mass, being consistent with Tevatron CDFII. Finally, we show that the isospin charged gauge boson of $SU(2)_D$ becomes a plausible candidate for dark matter with a small mass splitting tied up to the modified $W$ boson mass, and there is a viable parameter space where the favored corrections to the muon $g-2$ and the $W$ boson mass and the dark matter constraints are simultaneously fulfilled.

Reheating and Dark Matter Freeze-in in the Higgs-$R^2$ Inflation Model

We study the post-inflationary dynamics for reheating and freeze-in dark matter in the Higgs-$R^2$ inflation model. Taking the perturbative approach for reheating, we determine the evolution of the temperature for radiation bath produced during reheating and determine the maximum and reheating temperatures of the Universe. Adopting a singlet scalar dark matter with a conformal non-minimal coupling and a vanishing Higgs-portal coupling, we discuss the freeze-in production of dark matter both from the non-thermal scattering during reheating and the thermal scattering after reheating. We find that thermal scattering is dominant for dark matter production in our model due to the high reheating temperature. The reheating temperature in our model is determined dominantly by the Higgs condensate to be up to about $10^{14}\,{\rm GeV}$ and dark matter with masses up to about $10^9\,{\rm GeV}$ can be produced with a correct relic density.

Inflation and Supersymmetry Breaking in Higgs-$R^2$ Supergravity

We propose a new construction of the supergravity inflation as an UV completion of the Higgs-$R^2$ inflation. In the dual description of $R^2$-supergravity, we show that there appear dual chiral superfields containing the scalaron or sigma field in the Starobinsky inflation, which unitarizes the supersymmetric Higgs inflation with a large non-minimal coupling up to the Planck scale. We find that a successful slow-roll inflation is achievable in the Higgs-sigma field space, but under the condition that higher curvature terms are introduced to cure the tachyonic mass problems for spectator singlet scalar fields. We also discuss supersymmetry breaking and its transmission to the visible sector as a result of the couplings of the dual chiral superfields and the non-minimal gravity coupling of the Higgs fields.

Cosmology of Linear Higgs-Sigma Models with Conformal Invariance

We consider general linear Higgs-sigma models as ultra-violet completions of the Higgs inflation. We introduce general higher curvature terms beyond Einstein gravity and recast them into a class of linear Higgs-sigma models in the scalar-dual formulation where conformal symmetry is manifest. Integrating out the sigma field in this class of linear sigma models, we obtain the same Higgs inflation Lagrangian of non-linear sigma model type in the effective theory. We show that the successful inflation for sigma field singles out the sigma-field potential derived from the $R^2$ term and the tracker solution for dark energy at late times can be realized for the $R^{p+1}$ term with $-1<p<0$. We also discuss the implications of Higgs-sigma interactions for the inflation and the vacuum stability in the Standard Model.

Flux-mediated Dark Matter

We propose a new mechanism to communicate between fermion dark matter and the Standard Model (SM) only through the four-form flux. The four-form couplings are responsible for the relaxation of the Higgs mass to the correct value and the initial displacement of the reheating pseudo-scalar field from the minimum. We show that the simultaneous presence of the pseudo-scalar coupling to fermion dark matter and the flux-induced Higgs mixing gives rise to unsuppressed annihilations of dark matter into the SM particles at present, whereas the direct detection bounds from XENON1T can be avoided. We suggest exploring the interesting bulk parameter space of the model for which dark matter annihilates dominantly into a pair of singlet-like scalars with similar mass as for dark matter.
