Photometric properties of stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters: the role of the Mg-Al anticorrelation

We have computed low-mass stellar models and synthetic spectra for an initial chemical composition that includes the full C-N, O-Na, and Mg-Al abundance anticorrelations observed in second generation stars belonging to a number of massive Galactic globular clusters. This investigation extends a previous study that has addressed the effect of only the C-N and O-Na anticorrelations, seen in all globulars observed to date. We find that the impact of Mg-Al abundance variations at fixed [Fe/H] and Helium abundance is negligible on stellar models and isochrones (from the main sequence to the tip of the red giant branch) and bolometric corrections, when compared to the effect of C-N and O-Na variations. We identify a spectral feature at 490-520 nm, for low-mass main sequence stars, caused by MgH molecular bands. This feature has a vanishingly small effect on bolometric corrections for Johnson and Stroemgren filters that cover that spectral range. However, specific narrow-band filters able to target this wavelength region can be powerful tools to investigate the Mg-poor unevolved stars and highlight possible splittings of the MS due to variations of Mg abundances.

On the period distribution of cluster RR Lyrae stars to constrain their helium content: the case of omega Centauri

We present new sets of nonlinear, time-dependent convective hydrodynamical models of RR Lyrae stars assuming two metal (Z=0.0005, Z=0.001) and three helium abundances (Y=0.24, 0.30, 0.38). For each chemical composition we constructed a grid of fundamental (FU) and first overtone (FO) models covering a broad range of stellar masses and luminosities. To constrain the impact of the helium content on RR Lyrae properties, we adopted two observables --period distribution, luminosity amplitudes-- that are independent of distance and reddening. The current predictions confirm that the helium content has a marginal effect on the pulsation properties. The key parameter causing the difference between canonical and He-enhanced observables is the luminosity. We compared current predictions with the sample of 189 RR Lyrae stars in omega Cen and we found that the period range of He-enhanced models is systematically longer than observed. These findings apply to metal-poor and metal-intermediate He-enhanced models. To further constrain the impact of He-enhanced structures on the period distribution we also computed a series of synthetic HB models and we found that the predicted period distribution, based on a Gaussian sampling in mass, agrees quite well with observations. This applies not only to the minimum fundamentalized period of RR Lyrae stars (0.39 vs 0.34 day), but also to the fraction of Type II Cepheids (2% vs 3%). We also computed a series of synthetic HB models assuming a mixed HB population in which the 80% is made of canonical HB structures, while the 20% is made of He-enhanced (Y=0.30) HB structures. We found that the fraction of Type II Cepheids predicted by these models is almost a factor of two larger than observed (5% vs 3%). This indicates that the fraction of He-enhanced structures in omega Cen cannot be larger than 20%.

On the magnitude difference between the main sequence turn off and the red giant branch bump in Galactic globular clusters

We present new measurements of the magnitude of the main sequence turn off and the red giant branch bump in the luminosity function of a sample of Galactic globular clusters with updated estimates of [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe], employing photometric data collected with the Advanced Camera for Survey on board the HST. We compare measured and predicted values of the magnitude difference between these two features, a rarely employed diagnostic of the internal structure of low-mass stars at the beginning of their red giant evolution. Our analysis discloses a clear discrepancy between theory and observations, the theoretical red giant branch bump magnitudes being too bright by on average $\sim0.2$~mag. This corroborates results from the more widely studied magnitude difference between horizontal branch and red giant bump, avoiding the well known problems associated to the determination of the horizontal branch level from colour magnitude diagrams, and to uncertainties in the luminosity of horizontal branch stellar models. We briefly discuss several potential solutions of this discrepancy.

The impact of an updated $^{14}N(p,γ)^{15}O$ reaction rate on advanced evolutionary stages of low-mass stellar models

We have investigated the impact of the $^{14}N(p,γ)^{15}O$ reaction rate recently redetermined by the LUNA experiment, on the shell H-burning and core He-burning phases of low-mass, metal poor stellar models. The new reaction rate has small but noticeable effects, the largest one being a $\sim$7-8\% reduction of the red giant branch lifetimes. To different degrees, the lifetimes and luminosities of horizontal branch models, the mass of the stellar models evolving within the RR Lyrae instability strip, the luminosity of the red giant branch luminosity function bump, the theoretical calibrations of the R-parameter and tip of the red giant branch luminosity are also affected. Predictions for the tip of the red giant branch luminosity, in particular, are in very good agreement with the currently available empirical constraints.

The impact of enhanced He and CNONa abundances on globular cluster relative age-dating methods

The impact that unrecognised differences in the chemical patterns of Galactic globular clusters have on their relative age determinations is studied. The two most widely used relative age-dating methods, horizontal and vertical, together with the more recent relative MS-fitting method, were carefully analyzed on a purely theoretical basis. The BaSTI library was adopted to perform the present analysis. We find that relative ages derived using the horizontal and vertical methods are largely dependent on the initial He content and heavy element distribution. Unrecognized cluster-to-cluster chemical abundance differences can lead to an error in the derived relative ages as large as ~0.5 (or ~6 Gyr if an age of 12.8 Gyr is adopted for normalization), and even larger for some extreme cases. It is shown that the relative MS-fitting method is by far the age-dating technique for which undetected cluster-to-cluster differences in the He abundance have less impact. Present results are used in order to pose constraints on the maximum possible spread in the He and CNONa elements abundances on the basis of the estimates - taken from the literature - of the Galactic globular clusters relative age dispersion obtained with the various relative age-dating techniques. Finally, it is shown that the age-metallicity relation found for young Galactic globular clusters by the GC Treasury program is a real age sequence and cannot be produced by variations in the He and/or heavy element distribution.

A large stellar evolution database for population synthesis studies. IV. Integrated properties and spectra

This paper is the 4th in a series describing the latest additions to the BaSTI stellar evolution database, which consists of a large set of homogeneous models and tools for population synthesis studies. Here we present a new set of low and high resolution synthetic spectra based on the BaSTI stellar models, covering a large range of simple stellar populations (SSPs) for both scaled solar and alpha-enhanced metal mixtures. This enables a completely consistent study of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of both resolved and unresolved stellar populations, and allows us to make detailed tests on their integrated properties. Our low resolution spectra are suitable for deriving broadband magnitudes and colors in any photometric system. These spectra cover the full wavelength range (9-160000nm) and include all evolutionary stages up to the end of AGB evolution. Our high resolution spectra are suitable for studying the behaviour of line indices and we have tested them against a large sample of Galactic globular clusters. We find that the range of ages, iron abundances [Fe/H], and degree of alpha-enhancement predicted by the models matches observed values very well. We have also tested the global consistency of the BaSTI models by making detailed comparisons between ages and metallicities derived from isochrone fitting to observed CMDs, and from line index strengths, for the Galactic globular cluster 47Tuc and the open cluster M67. For 47Tuc we find reasonable agreement between the 2 methods, within the estimated errors. From the comparison with M67 we find non-negligible effects on derived line indices caused by statistical fluctuations, which are a result of the specific method used to populate an isochrone and assign appropriate spectra to individual stars. A Large Stellar Evolution Database for Population Synthesis Studies. III. Inclusion of the full Asymptotic Giant Branch phase and Web tools for stellar population analyses

Stellar evolution tracks and isochrones are key inputs for a wide range of astrophysical studies; in particular, they are essential to the interpretation of photometric and spectroscopic observations of resolved and unresolved stellar populations. We have made available to the astrophysical community a large, homogenous database of up-to-date stellar tracks and isochrones, and a set of programs useful in population synthesis studies. In this paper we first summarize the main properties of our stellar model database (BaSTI) already introduced in Pietrinferni et al. (2004) and Pietrinferni et al. (2006). We then discuss an important update of the database, i.e., the extension of all stellar models and isochrones until the end of the thermal pulses along the Asymptotic Giant Branch. This extension of the library is particularly relevant for stellar population analyses in the near-infrared, or longer wavelengths, where the contribution to the integrated photometric properties by cool and bright Asymptotic Giant Branch stars is significant. A few comparisons with empirical data are also presentend and briefly discussed. We then present three web-tools that allow an interactive access to the database, and make possible to compute user-specified evolutionary tracks, isochrones, stellar luminosity functions, plus synthetic Color-Magnitude-Diagrams and integrated magnitudes for arbitrary Star Formation Histories. All these web tools are available at the BaSTI database official site: http://www.oa-teramo.inaf.it/BASTI.

Evolutionary and structural properties of mirror star MACHOs

There can exist a hidden sector of the Universe in the form of parallel ''mirror'' world which has the same particle physics as the observable world and interacts with the latter only gravitationally. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds demand that the mirror sector should have a smaller temperature than the ordinary one. This implies that the mirror matter could play a role of dark matter, and in addition its chemical content should be dominated by helium. Here we study the evolutionary and structural properties of the mirror stars which essentially are similar to that of the ordinary stars but with higher helium contents. Being invisible in terms of photons, they could be observed only as MACHOs in the microlensing experiments. Using a numerical code, we compute evolution of stars with large helium abundances (Y = 0.30-0.80) and a wide range of masses, from 0.5 to 10 solar masses. We found that helium dominated mirror star should have much faster evolutionary time (up to a factor 30) than the ordinary star with the same mass. In addition, we show the diagrams of luminosities, effective temperatures, central temperatures and densities, and compute the masses of the He core at ignition and the minimum mass for carbon ignition, for different chemical compositions. The general conclusion is that mirror stars evolve faster as compared to ordinary ones, and explode earlier as type II supernovae, thus enriching the galactic halo of processed mirror gas with higher metallicity, with implications for MACHO observations and galaxy evolution.

Transforming observational data and theoretical isochrones into the ACS/WFC Vega-mag system

We propose a zero-point photometric calibration of the data from the ACS/WFC on board the Hubble Space Telescope, based on a spectrum of Vega and the most up to date in-flight transmission curves of the camera. This calibration is accurate at the level of a few hundredths of a magnitude. The main purpose of this effort is to transform the entire set of evolutionary models by Pietrinferni et al. (2004) into a simple observational photometric system for ACS/WFC data, and make them available to the astronomical community. We provide the zero points for the most used ACS/WFC bands, and give basic recipes for calibrating both the observed data and the models. We also present the Colour Magnitude Diagram (CMD) from ACS data of 5 Galactic globular clusters, spanning the metallicity range -2.2<[Fe/H]<-0.04, and provide fiducial points representing their sequences from several magnitudes below the turnoff to the red giant branch tip. The observed sequences are compared with the models in the newly defined photometric system.

Metallicities on the Double Main Sequence of omega Centauri Imply Large Helium Enhancement

Having shown in a recent paper that the main sequence of omega Centauri is split into two distinct branches, we now present spectroscopic results showing that the bluer sequence is_less_ metal-poor. We have carefully combined GIRAFFE@VLT spectra of 17 stars on each side of the split into a single spectrum for each branch, with adequate S/N to show clearly that the stars of the blue main sequence are less metal poor by 0.3 dex than those of the dominant red one. From an analysis of the individual spectra, we could not detect any abundance spread among the blue main sequence stars, while the red main sequence stars show a 0.2 dex spread in metallicity. We use stellar-structure models to show that only greatly enhanced helium can explain the color difference between the two main sequences, and we discuss ways in which this enhancement could have arisen.

Color transformations and bolometric corrections for Galactic halo stars: alpha-enhanced vs scaled-solar results

We have performed the first extensive analysis of the impact of an [alpha/Fe]>0 metal distribution on broadband colors in the parameter space (surface gravity, effective temperature, metal content) covered by Galactic globular cluster stars.A comparison of updated and homogeneous ATLAS9 UBVRIJHKL synthetic photometry, for both alpha-enhanced and scaled-solar metal distributions, has shown that it is impossible to reproduce alpha-enhanced (B-V) and (U-B) color transformations with simple rescalings of the scaled-solar ones. At [Fe/H]$\sim -$2.0 alpha-enhanced transformations are well reproduced by scaled-solar ones with the same [Fe/H], but this good agreement breaks down at [Fe/H] larger than about -1.6.As a general rule, (B-V) and (U-B) alpha-enhanced colors are bluer than scaled-solar ones at either the same [Fe/H] or [M/H], and the differences increase with increasing metallicity and decreasing T_eff. A preliminary analysis of the contribution of the various alpha elements to the stellar colors shows that the magnesium abundance (and to lesser extent oxygen and silicon) is the main responsible for these differences. On the contrary, the bolometric correction to the V band and more infrared colors predicted by alpha-enhanced transformations are well reproduced by scaled-solar results, due to their weak dependence on the metal content.Key parameters like the Turn Off and Zero Age Horizontal Branch V magnitudes, as well as the red Giant Branch tip I magnitude obtained from theoretical isochrones are in general unaffected when using the appropriate alpha-enhanced transformations in place of scaled-solar ones. We have also studied the effect of boundary conditions obtained from appropriate alpha-enhanced model atmospheres on the evolutionary tracks in the HR diagram.
