Carroll-Cotton Tensors and Gravitational Radiation at Null Infinity

We provide a first-principles definition of Cotton tensors on conformal Carroll geometries by gauging the conformal Carroll algebra. On the mathematical side, this analysis yields a conformally covariant object designed to quantify deviations from conformal flatness in Carrollian geometries. On the physical side, it offers a powerful geometric tool to describe gravitational radiative degrees of freedom at the conformal boundary of four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Unlike the Bondi news, whose fully-covariant definition requires amendment by supplementary data that we identify with the Geroch tensor, the Carroll-Cotton tensors offer the natural geometric objects to quantify deviations from stationarity due to the emission of gravitational waves.

Kinetic Theory of Carroll Hydrodynamics

We develop the foundations of Carrollian statistical mechanics by considering a system of interacting instantonic space-filling branes on a flat background, thereby providing the closest Carrollian analogue to the Galilean gas of interacting particles that underpins Boltzmann's collision theory. By adapting Boltzmann's statistical approach within this framework, we provide a first-principles microscopic derivation of the so-called Carrollian fluid equations, which were previously obtained as the vanishing-speed-of-light limit of relativistic conservation laws. We then use this analysis as a basis for formulating the first elements of Carrollian thermodynamics.

Carrollian-holographic Derivation of Gravitational Flux-Balance Laws

We demonstrate that the BMS evolution equations for the mass and angular momentum aspects in asymptotically flat Einstein gravity follow from local Carroll, Weyl, and diffeomorphism invariance at the null conformal boundary, upon providing a minimalistic holographic dictionary as the sole input from the bulk. This result is a significant step in the quest for a flat-space holographic correspondence and offers a geometric implementation of the radiative degrees of freedom that source the boundary theory in the presence of bulk gravitational waves.

Tantum Gravity

We argue there is an interesting triple-scaling limit of quantum gravity, namely when Planck's constant scales to infinity while Newton's constant and the speed of light tend to zero, keeping fixed the gravitational coupling $G_N\,c^{-4}$ and the combination $\hbar\,c$. We refer to this limiting theory as ``tantum gravity'' and describe in this Letter some of its main properties and prospects for physics. Most notably, the laws of black hole thermodynamics survive this limit, which means that puzzles related to black holes and their evaporation could be addressed more easily in tantum gravity than in fully-fledged quantum gravity.

Superrotations at Spacelike Infinity

We propose a consistent set of boundary conditions for gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime at spacelike infinity, which yields an enhancement of the Bondi-Metzner Sachs group with smooth superrotations and new subleading symmetries. These boundary conditions are obtained by allowing fluctuations of the boundary structure which are responsible for divergences in the symplectic form, and a renormalization procedure is required to obtain finite canonical generators. The latter are then made integrable by incorporating boundary terms into the symplectic structure, which naturally derive from a linearized spin-two boundary field on a curved background with positive cosmological constant. Finally, we show that the canonical generators form a nonlinear algebra under the Poisson bracket and verify the consistency of this structure with the Jacobi identity.

Bridging Carrollian and Celestial Holography

Gravity in $4d$ asymptotically flat spacetime constitutes the archetypal example of a gravitational system with leaky boundary conditions. Pursuing our analysis of [1], we argue that the holographic description of such a system requires the coupling of the dual theory living at null infinity to some external sources encoding the radiation reaching the conformal boundary and responsible for the non-conservation of the charges. In particular, we show that the sourced Ward identities of a conformal Carrollian field theory living at null infinity reproduce the BMS flux-balance laws. We also derive the general form of low-point correlation functions for conformal Carrollian field theories and exhibit a new branch of solutions, which is argued to be the relevant one for holographic purposes. We then relate our Carrollian approach to the celestial holography proposal by mapping the Carrollian Ward identities to those constraining celestial operators through a suitable integral transform.

Logarithmic Celestial Conformal Field Theory

We argue that the celestial conformal field theory exhibits patterns of a logarithmic conformal field theory. We uncover a Jordan block structure involving the celestial stress tensor and its logarithmic partner, a composite operator built from the stress tensor and the Liouville field. Using a limiting process whose parameter corresponds to the infrared cut-off of gravity, we perform some basic consistency checks, particularly the calculation of two-point correlators, which reveals the expected logarithmic behavior. We comment on the vanishing value of the central charge in the celestial conformal field theory and explain how the logarithmic partner is relevant for its well-behavedness.

The $Λ$-BMS$_4$ group of dS$_4$ and new boundary conditions for AdS$_4$

Using the dictionary between Bondi and Fefferman-Graham gauges, we identify the analogues of the Bondi news, Bondi mass and Bondi angular momentum aspects at the boundary of generic asymptotically locally (A)dS$_4$ spacetimes. We introduce the $Λ$-BMS$_4$ group as the residual symmetry group of the metric in Bondi gauge after boundary gauge fixing. This group consists of infinite-dimensional non-abelian supertranslations and superrotations and it reduces in the asymptotically flat limit to the extended BMS$_4$ group. Furthermore, we present new boundary conditions for asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ spacetimes which admit $\mathbb R$ times the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms as the asymptotic symmetry group. The boundary conditions amount to fix 2 components of the holographic stress-tensor while allowing 2 components of the boundary metric to fluctuate. They correspond to a deformation of a holographic CFT$_3$ which is coupled to a fluctuating spatial metric of fixed area.

Carrollian Perspective on Celestial Holography

We show that a $3d$ sourced conformal Carrollian field theory has the right kinematic properties to holographically describe gravity in $4d$ asymptotically flat spacetime. The external sources encode the leaks of gravitational radiation at null infinity. The Ward identities of this theory are shown to reproduce those of the $2d$ celestial CFT after relating Carrollian to celestial operators. This suggests a new set of interplays between gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime, sourced conformal Carrollian field theory and celestial CFT.

Leaky covariant phase spaces: Theory and application to $Λ$-BMS symmetry

The present thesis aims at providing a unified description of radiative phase spaces in General Relativity for any value of the cosmological constant using covariant phase space methods. We start by considering generic asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetimes with leaky boundary conditions in the Starobinsky/Fefferman-Graham gauge. The boundary structure is allowed to fluctuate and plays the role of source yielding some flux of gravitational radiation at the boundary. The holographic renormalization procedure is employed to obtain finite surface charges for the whole class of boundary diffeomorphisms and Weyl rescalings. We then propose a boundary gauge fixing isolating the radiative boundary degrees of freedom without constraining the Cauchy problem in asymptotically dS spacetimes. The residual gauge transformations form the infinite-dimensional $Λ$-BMS algebroid, which reduces to the Generalized BMS algebra of smooth supertranslations and super-Lorentz transformations in the flat limit. The analysis is repeated in the Bondi gauge in which we identify the analogues of the Bondi news, mass and angular momentum aspects in the presence of a cosmological constant. We give a prescription to perform the flat limit of the phase space and demonstrate how to use this connection to renormalize the corresponding phase space of asymptotically locally flat spacetimes at null infinity including smooth super-Lorentz transformations. In that context, we discuss the memory effects associated with super-Lorentz vacuum transitions and finally provide a new definition of the BMS charges whose fluxes are compatible with soft theorems.

Charge Algebra in Al(A)dS$_n$ Spacetimes

The gravitational charge algebra of generic asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetimes is derived in $n$ dimensions. The analysis is performed in the Starobinsky/Fefferman-Graham gauge, without assuming any further boundary condition than the minimal falloffs for conformal compactification. In particular, the boundary structure is allowed to fluctuate and plays the role of source yielding some symplectic flux at the boundary. Using the holographic renormalization procedure, the divergences are removed from the symplectic structure, which leads to finite expressions. The charges associated with boundary diffeomorphisms are generically non-vanishing, non-integrable and not conserved, while those associated with boundary Weyl rescalings are non-vanishing only in odd dimensions due to the presence of Weyl anomalies in the dual theory. The charge algebra exhibits a field-dependent $2$-cocycle in odd dimensions. When the general framework is restricted to three-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the $2$-cocycle reduces to the Brown-Henneaux central extension. The analysis is also specified to leaky boundary conditions in asymptotically locally (A)dS spacetimes that lead to the $Λ$-BMS asymptotic symmetry group. In the flat limit, the latter contracts into the BMS group in $n$ dimensions.

The $Λ$-BMS$_4$ Charge Algebra

The surface charge algebra of generic asymptotically locally (A)dS$_4$ spacetimes without matter is derived without assuming any boundary conditions. Surface charges associated with Weyl rescalings are vanishing while the boundary diffeomorphism charge algebra is non-trivially represented without central extension. The $Λ$-BMS$_4$ charge algebra is obtained after specifying a boundary foliation and a boundary measure. The existence of the flat limit requires the addition of corner terms in the action and symplectic structure that are defined from the boundary foliation and measure. The flat limit then reproduces the BMS$_4$ charge algebra of supertranslations and super-Lorentz transformations acting on asymptotically locally flat spacetimes. The BMS$_4$ surface charges represent the BMS$_4$ algebra without central extension at the corners of null infinity under the standard Dirac bracket, which implies that the BMS$_4$ flux algebra admits no non-trivial central extension.

Superboost transitions, refraction memory and super-Lorentz charge algebra

We derive a closed-form expression of the orbit of Minkowski spacetime under arbitrary Diff$(S^2)$ super-Lorentz transformations and supertranslations. Such vacua are labelled by the superboost, superrotation and supertranslation fields. Impulsive transitions among vacua are related to the refraction memory effect and the displacement memory effect. A phase space is defined whose asymptotic symmetry group consists of arbitrary Diff$(S^2)$ super-Lorentz transformations and supertranslations. It requires a renormalization of the symplectic structure. We show that our final surface charge expressions are consistent with the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems. We contrast the leading BMS triangle structure to the mixed overleading/subleading BMS square structure.

Asymptotically flat spacetimes with BMS$_3$ symmetry

We construct the phase space of 3-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes that forms the bulk metric representation of the BMS group consisting of both supertranslations and superrotations. The asymptotic symmetry group is a unique copy of the BMS group at both null infinities and spatial infinity. The BMS phase space obeys a notion of holographic causality and can be parametrized by boundary null fields. This automatically leads to the antipodal identification of bulk fields between past and future null infinity in the absence of a global conical defect.
