To gauge or to double gauge? Matrix models, global symmetry, and black hole cohomologies

We study the structure of the Hilbert space of gauged matrix models with a global symmetry. In the first part of the paper, we focus on bosonic matrix models with $U(2)$ gauge group and $SO(d)$ global symmetry, and consider singlets under both the gauge and global symmetry. We show how such "double-gauged'' matrix models can be described in terms of a simpler $SO(3)$ single-matrix model. In the second part of the paper, we consider the so-called BMN subsector of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory, which is closely related to the BMN matrix model. Among the 1/16 BPS operators in this sector, "non-graviton'' operators were recently discovered, which are expected to relate to the microstates of supersymmetric $AdS_5$ black holes. We show that a double gauging of this model, where one projects onto $SU(3)_R$ $R$-symmetry singlets, considerably simplifies the analysis of the non-graviton spectrum. In particular, for low values of $N$, we show that (almost) all graviton operators project out of the spectrum, while important classes of non-graviton operators remain. In the $N=3$ case, we obtain a closed form expression for the superconformal index of singlet non-gravitons, which reveals structural features of their spectrum.

Boundary Liouville Conformal Field Theory in Four Dimensions

Higher dimensional Euclidean Liouville conformal field theories (LCFTs) consist of a log-correlated real scalar field with a background charge and an exponential potential. We analyse the LCFT on a four-dimensional manifold with a boundary. We extend to the boundary, the conformally covariant GJMS operator and the ${\cal Q}$-curvature term in the LCFT action and classify the conformal boundary conditions. Working on a flat space with plate boundary, we calculate the dimensions of the boundary conformal primary operators, the two- and three-point functions of the displacement operator and the boundary conformal anomaly coefficients.

QCD Worldsheet Axion from the Bootstrap

The worldsheet axion plays a crucial role in the dynamics of the Yang-Mills confining flux tubes. According to the lattice measurements, its mass is of order the string tension and its coupling is close to a certain critical value. Using the S-matrix Bootstrap, we construct non-perturbative $2 \to 2$ branon scattering amplitudes which also feature a weakly coupled axion resonance with these properties. We study the extremal bootstrap amplitudes in detail and show that the axion plays a dominant role in their UV completion in two distinct regimes, in one of which it cannot be considered a parametrically light particle. We conjecture that the actual flux tube amplitudes exhibit a similar behavior.

A Microscopic Model of Black Hole Evaporation in Two Dimensions

We present a microscopic model of black hole (BH) `evaporation' in asymptotically $AdS_2$ spacetimes dual to the low energy sector of the SYK model. To describe evaporation, the SYK model is coupled to a bath comprising of $N_f$ free scalar fields $\Phi_i$. We consider a linear combination of couplings of the form $O_{SYK}(t)\sum_i\Phi_i(0,t)$, where $O_{SYK}$ involves products of the Kourkoulou-Maldacena operator $i J/N\sum_{k=1}^{N/2}s'_k\psi_{2k-1}(t)\psi_{2k}(t)$ specified by a spin vector $s'$. We discuss the time evolution of a product of (i) a pure state of the SYK system, namely a BH microstate characterized by a spin vector $s$ and an effective BH temperature $T_{BH}$, and (ii) a Calabrese-Cardy state of the bath characterized by an effective temperature $T_{bath}$. We take $T_{bath}\ll T_{BH}$, and $T_{BH}$ much lower than the characteristic UV scale $J$ of the SYK model, allowing a description in terms of the time reparameterization mode. Tracing over the bath degrees of freedom leads to a Feynman-Vernon type effective action for the SYK model, which we study in the low energy limit. The leading large $N$ behaviour of the time reparameterization mode is found, as well as the $O(1/\sqrt N)$ fluctuations. The latter are characterized by a non-Markovian non-linear stochastic differential equation with non-local Gaussian noise. In a restricted range of couplings, we find two classes of solutions which asymptotically approach (a) a BH at a lower temperature, and (b) a horizonless geometry. We identify these with partial and complete BH evaporation, respectively. Importantly, the asymptotic solution in both cases involves the scalar product of the spin vectors $s.s'$, which carries some information about the initial state. By repeating the dynamical process $O(N^2)$ times with different choices of the spin vector $s'$, one can in principle reconstruct the initial BH microstate.

Holographic dual to charged SYK from 3D Gravity and Chern-Simons

In this paper, we obtain a bulk dual to SYK model, including SYK model with $U(1)$ charge, by Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction from three dimensions. We show that KK reduction of the 3D Einstein action plus its boundary term gives the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model in 2D with the appropriate 1D boundary term. The size of the KK radius gets identified with the value of the dilaton in the resulting near-AdS$_2$ geometry. In presence of U(1) charge, the 3D model additionally includes a $U(1)$ Chern-Simons (CS) action. In order to describe a boundary theory with non-zero chemical potential, we also introduce a coupling between CS gauge field and bulk gravity. The 3D CS action plus the new coupling term with appropriate boundary terms reduce in two dimensions to a BF-type action plus a source term and boundary terms. The KK reduced 2D theory represents the soft sector of the charged SYK model. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes of combined $\textit{Diff} /\mathbb{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and $U(1)_{\rm local}/U(1)$ transformations are represented by combined large diffeomorphisms and large gauge transformations. The effective action of the former is reproduced by the action cost of the latter in the bulk dual, after appropriate identification of parameters. We compute chaotic correlators from the bulk and reproduce the result that the contribution from the "boundary photons" corresponds to zero Liapunov exponent.

Quantum quench and thermalization to GGE in arbitrary dimensions and the odd-even effect

In many quantum quench experiments involving cold atom systems the post-quench system can be described by a quantum field theory of free scalars or fermions, typically in a box or in an external potential. We work with free scalars in arbitrary dimensions generalizing the techniques employed in our earlier work \cite{Mandal:2015kxi} in 1+1 dimensions. In this paper, we generalize to $d$ spatial dimensions for arbitrary $d$. The system is considered in a box much larger than any other scale of interest. We start with the ground state, or a squeezed state, with a high mass and suddenly quench the system to zero mass ("critical quench"). We explicitly compute time-dependence of local correlators and show that at long times they are described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), which, in special cases, reduce to a thermal (Gibbs) ensemble. The equilibration of {\it local} correlators can be regarded as `subsystem thermalization' which we simply call 'thermalization' here (the notion of thermalization here also includes equlibration to GGE). The rate of approach to equilibrium is exponential or power law depending on whether $d$ is odd or even respectively. As in 1+1 dimensions, details of the quench protocol affect the long time behaviour; this underlines the importance of irrelevant operators at IR in non-equilibrium situations. We also discuss quenches from a high mass to a lower non-zero mass, and find that in this case the approach to equilibrium is given by a power law in time, for all spatial dimensions $d$, even or odd.

Gravitational collapse in SYK models and Choptuik-like phenomenon

SYK model is a quantum mechanical model of fermions which is solvable at strong coupling and plays an important role as perhaps the simplest holographic model of quantum gravity and black holes. The present work considers a deformed SYK model and a sudden quantum quench in the deformation parameter. The system, as in the undeformed case, permits a low energy description in terms of pseudo Nambu Goldstone modes. The bulk dual of such a system represents a gravitational collapse, which is characterized by a bulk matter stress tensor whose value near the boundary shows a sudden jump at the time of the quench. The resulting gravitational collapse forms a black hole only if the deformation parameter $Δε$ exceeds a certain critical value $Δε_c$ and forms a horizonless geometry otherwise. In case a black hole does form, the resulting Hawking temperature is given by a fractional power $T_{bh} \propto (Δε- Δε_c)^{1/2}$, which is reminiscent of the `Choptuik phenomenon' of critical gravitational collapse.

Spectral Form Factor in Non-Gaussian Random Matrix Theories

We consider Random Matrix Theories with non-Gaussian potentials that have a rich phase structure in the large $N$ limit. We calculate the Spectral Form Factor (SFF) in such models and present them as interesting examples of dynamical models that display multi-criticality at short time-scales and universality at large time scales. The models with quartic and sextic potentials are explicitly worked out. The disconnected part of the Spectral Form Factor (SFF) shows a change in its decay behavior exactly at the critical points of each model. The dip-time of the SFF is estimated in each of these models. The late time behavior of all polynomial potential matrix models is shown to display a certain universality. This is related to the universality in the short distance correlations of the mean-level densities. We speculate on the implications of such universality for chaotic quantum systems including the SYK model.
