An Inexact Variance-Reduced Method For Stochastic Quasi-Variational Inequality Problems With An Application In Healthcare

This paper is focused on a stochastic quasi-variational inequality (SQVI) problem with a continuous and strongly-monotone mapping over a closed and convex set where the projection onto the constraint set may not be easy to compute. We present an inexact variance reduced stochastic scheme to solve SQVI problems and analyzed its convergence rate and oracle complexity. A linear rate of convergence is obtained by progressively increasing sample-size and approximating the projection operator. Moreover, we show how a competition among blood donation organizations can be modeled as an SQVI and we provide some preliminary simulation results to validate our findings.

Probability Maximization via Minkowski Functionals: Convex Representations and Tractable Resolution

In this paper, we consider the maximization of a probability $\mathbb{P}\{ ζ\mid ζ\in \mathbf{K}(\mathbf x)\}$ over a closed and convex set $\mathcal X$, a special case of the chance-constrained optimization problem. We define $\mathbf{K}(\mathbf x)$ as $\mathbf{K}(\mathbf x) \triangleq \{ ζ\in \mathcal{K} \mid c(\mathbf{x},ζ) \geq 0 \}$ where $ζ$ is uniformly distributed on a convex and compact set $\mathcal{K}$ and $c(\mathbf{x},ζ)$ is defined as either {$c(\mathbf{x},ζ) \triangleq 1-|ζ^T\mathbf{x}|^m$, $m\geq 0$} (Setting A) or $c(\mathbf{x},ζ) \triangleq T\mathbf{x} -ζ$ (Setting B). We show that in either setting, $\mathbb{P}\{ ζ\mid ζ\in \mathbf{K(x)}\}$ can be expressed as the expectation of a suitably defined function $F(\mathbf{x},ξ)$ with respect to an appropriately defined Gaussian density (or its variant), i.e. $\mathbb{E}_{\tilde p} [F(\mathbf x,ξ)]$. We then develop a convex representation of the original problem requiring the minimization of ${g(\mathbb{E}[F(\mathbf{x},ξ)])}$ over $\mathcal X$ where $g$ is an appropriately defined smooth convex function. Traditional stochastic approximation schemes cannot contend with the minimization of ${g(\mathbb{E}[F(\cdot,ξ)])}$ over $\mathcal X$, since conditionally unbiased sampled gradients are unavailable. We then develop a regularized variance-reduced stochastic approximation (r-VRSA) scheme that obviates the need for such unbiasedness by combining iterative regularization with variance-reduction. Notably, (r-VRSA) is characterized by both almost-sure convergence guarantees, a convergence rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/k^{1/2-a})$ in expected sub-optimality where $a > 0$, and a sample complexity of $\mathcal{O}(1/ε^{6+δ})$ where $δ> 0$.

Inexact-Proximal Accelerated Gradient Method for Stochastic Nonconvex Constrained Optimization Problems

Stochastic nonconvex optimization problems with nonlinear constraints have a broad range of applications in intelligent transportation, cyber-security, and smart grids. In this paper, first, we propose an inexact-proximal accelerated gradient method to solve a nonconvex stochastic composite optimization problem where the objective is the sum of smooth and nonsmooth functions, the constraint functions are assumed to be deterministic and the solution to the proximal map of the nonsmooth part is calculated inexactly at each iteration. We demonstrate an asymptotic sublinear rate of convergence for stochastic settings using increasing sample-size considering the error in the proximal operator diminishes at an appropriate rate. Then we customize the proposed method for solving stochastic nonconvex optimization problems with nonlinear constraints and demonstrate a convergence rate guarantee. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A Stochastic Variance-reduced Accelerated Primal-dual Method for Finite-sum Saddle-point Problems

In this paper, we propose a variance-reduced primal-dual algorithm with Bregman distance for solving convex-concave saddle-point problems with finite-sum structure and nonbilinear coupling function. This type of problems typically arises in machine learning and game theory. Based on some standard assumptions, the algorithm is proved to converge with oracle complexity of $O\left(\frac{\sqrt n}ε\right)$ and $O\left(\frac{n}{\sqrt ε}+\frac{1}{ε^{1.5}}\right)$ using constant and non-constant parameters, respectively where $n$ is the number of function components. Compared with existing methods, our framework yields a significant improvement over the number of required primal-dual gradient samples to achieve $ε$-accuracy of the primal-dual gap. We tested our method for solving a distributionally robust optimization problem to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Primal-Dual Incremental Gradient Method for Nonsmooth and Convex Optimization Problems

In this paper, we consider a nonsmooth convex finite-sum problem with a conic constraint. To overcome the challenge of projecting onto the constraint set and computing the full (sub)gradient, we introduce a primal-dual incremental gradient scheme where only a component function and two constraints are used to update each primal-dual sub-iteration in a cyclic order. We demonstrate an asymptotic sublinear rate of convergence in terms of suboptimality and infeasibility which is an improvement over the state-of-the-art incremental gradient schemes in this setting. Numerical results suggest that the proposed scheme compares well with competitive methods.

A Variable Sample-size Stochastic Quasi-Newton Method for Smooth and Nonsmooth Stochastic Convex Optimization

Classical theory for quasi-Newton schemes has focused on smooth deterministic unconstrained optimization while recent forays into stochastic convex optimization have largely resided in smooth, unconstrained, and strongly convex regimes. Naturally, there is a compelling need to address nonsmoothness, the lack of strong convexity, and the presence of constraints. Accordingly, this paper presents a quasi-Newton framework that can process merely convex and possibly nonsmooth (but smoothable) stochastic convex problems. We propose a framework that combines iterative smoothing and regularization with a variance-reduced scheme reliant on using increasing sample-sizes of gradients. We make the following contributions. (i) We develop a regularized and smoothed variable sample-size BFGS update (rsL-BFGS) that generates a sequence of Hessian approximations and can accommodate nonsmooth convex objectives by utilizing iterative regularization and smoothing. (ii) In strongly convex regimes with state-dependent noise, the proposed variable sample-size stochastic quasi-Newton scheme admits a non-asymptotic linear rate of convergence while the oracle complexity of computing an $ε$-solution is $\mathcal{O}(κ^{m+1}/ε)$ where $κ$ is the condition number and $m\geq 1$. In nonsmooth (but smoothable) regimes, using Moreau smoothing retains the linear convergence rate. To contend with the possible unavailability of Lipschitzian and strong convexity parameters, we also provide sublinear rates; (iii) In merely convex but smooth settings, the regularized VS-SQN scheme rVS-SQN displays a rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/k^{(1-\varepsilon)})$. When the smoothness requirements are weakened, the rate for the regularized and smoothed VS-SQN scheme worsens to $\mathcal{O}(k^{-1/3})$. Such statements allow for a state-dependent noise assumption under a quadratic growth property.

A Proximal-Point Algorithm with Variable Sample-sizes (PPAWSS) for Monotone Stochastic Variational Inequality Problems

We consider a stochastic variational inequality (SVI) problem with a continuous and monotone mapping over a closed and convex set. In strongly monotone regimes, we present a variable sample-size averaging scheme (VS-Ave) that achieves a linear rate with an optimal oracle complexity. In addition, the iteration complexity is shown to display a muted dependence on the condition number compared with standard variance-reduced projection schemes. To contend with merely monotone maps, we develop amongst the first proximal-point algorithms with variable sample-sizes (PPAWSS), where increasingly accurate solutions of strongly monotone SVIs are obtained via (VS-Ave) at every step. This allows for achieving a sublinear convergence rate that matches that obtained for deterministic monotone VIs. Preliminary numerical evidence suggests that the schemes compares well with competing schemes.

Inverse Quadratic Transportation Problem

Many research has been conducted about quadratic programming and inverse optimization. In this paper we present the combination aspect of these subjects, applying on transportation problem. First, we obtain the inverse form of quadratic tranportation problem under $L_1$ norm by using duality as well as introducing the optimal value. Then, we do the same process for inverse quadratic transportation problem (IQTP) under $L_\infty$ norm.
