CoFeVSb: A Promising Candidate for Spin Valve and Thermoelectric Applications

We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of a novel quaternary Heusler system CoFeVSb from the view point of room temperature spintronics and thermoelectric applications. It crystallizes in cubic structure with small DO$_3$-type disorder. The presence of disorder is confirmed by room temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction(XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. Magnetization data reveal high ordering temperature with a saturation magnetization of 2.2 $μ_B$/f.u. Resistivity measurements reflect half-metallic nature. Double hysteresis loop along with asymmetry in the magnetoresistance(MR) data reveals room temperature spin-valve feature, which remains stable even at 300 K. Hall measurements show anomalous behavior with significant contribution from intrinsic Berry phase. This compound also large room temperature power factor ($\sim0.62$ mWatt/m/K$^{2}$) and ultra low lattice thermal conductivity ($\sim0.4$ W/m/K), making it a promising candidate for thermoelectric application. Ab-initio calculations suggest weak half-metallic behavior and reduced magnetization (in agreement with experiment) in presence of DO$_3$ disorder. We have also found an energetically competing ferromagnetic FM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) interface structure within an otherwise FM matrix: one of the prerequisites for spin valve behavior. Coexistence of so many promising features in a single system is rare, and hence CoFeVSb gives a fertile platform to explore numerous applications in future.

Coexistence of Multifold and Multidimensional Topological Phonons in KMgBO$_{3}$

Topological interpretations of phonons facilitate a new platform for novel concepts in phonon physics. Though there are ubiquitous set of reports on topological electronic excitations, the same for phonons are extremely limited. Here, we propose a new candidate material, KMgBO 3 , which showcase the co-existence of several multifold and multidimensional topological phonon excitations, which are protected by spatial and non-spatial symmetries. This includes zero dimensional double, triple and quadratic Weyl phonon nodes, one dimensional nodal line/loop and two dimensional doubly degenerate nodal surface states. Nodal line/loop emerges from the spin- 12 phonon nodes, while the two dimensional doubly degenerate nodal surface arises from a combination of two fold screw rotational and time reversal symmetries. Application of strain breaks the C 3 rotational symmetry, which annihilates the spin-1 double Weyl nodes, but preserves other topological features. Interestingly, strain helps to create two extra single Weyl nodes, which in turn preserve the total chirality. Alloying also breaks certain symmetries, destroying most of the topological phonon features in the present case. Thus, KMgBO 3 is a promising candidate which hosts various Weyl points, large Fermi arcs with a very clean phonon spectra and tunable topological phonon excitations, and hence certainly worth for future theoretical/experimental investigation of topological phononics.

Colossal Anomalous Hall Conductivity and Topological Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Kagome Metal Nd$_3$Al

Historically, the genesis of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials has always been a fascinating yet controversial topic in the solid state physics community. Recent progress on the understanding of this topic has revealed an intimate connection between the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states and the intrinsic AHE. Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time reversal symmetry is a classic example, which is expected to show large contributions to Berry curvature around the topological nodes and hence to the AHE. Here, we report a kagome metallic ferromagnet Nd$_3$Al, with a large unconventional positive magnetoresistance (~ 80 %) and colossal anomalous Hall conductivity of 1.8x10^5 S/cm (largest ever reported to the best of our knowledge). We also show that the magnetic state of this compound is quite different from its analogues in many respects. While the compound is predominantly an itinerant ferromagnet, its low temperature phase exhibits topological band structure, enhanced skew scattering as well as topological spin texture arising in the spin frustrated kagome lattice. Various experimental findings such as topological Hall effect, non-saturating positive magnetoresistance etc. give strong indication to this scenario. Ab-initio calculations broadly confirm the experimental findings by revealing the presence of flat bands and Weyl points originating from the itinerant Nd moments. The non-trivial band structure, enhanced skew scattering and the spin texture in a clean polycrystalline sample are found be responsible for the colossal Hall conductivity and topological Hall effect.

Intra-unitcell cluster-cluster magnetic compensation and large exchange bias in cubic alloys

Composite quantum materials are the ideal examples of multifunctional systems which simultaneously host more than one novel quantum phenomenon in physics. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study to demonstrate the presence of an extremely large exchange bias in the range 0.8 T - 2.7 T and a fully compensated magnetic state (FCF) in a special type of Pt and Ni doped Mn$_3$In cubic alloy. Here, oppositely aligned uncompensated moments in two different atomic clusters sum up to zero which are responsible for the FCF state. Our Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the existence of several possible ferrimagnetic configurations with the FCF as the energetically most stable one. The microscopic origin of the large exchange bias can be interpreted in terms of the exchange interaction between the FCF background and the uncompensated ferrimagnetic clusters stabilized due to its negligible energy difference with respect to the FCF phase. We utilize pulsed magnetic field up to 60 T and 30 T static field magnetization measurements to confirm the intrinsic nature of exchange bias in our system. Finally, our Hall effect measurements demonstrate the importance of uncompensated noncoplanar interfacial moments for the realization of large EB. The present finding of gigantic exchange bias in a unique compensated ferrimagnetic system opens up a direction for the design of novel quantum phenomena for the technological applications.

Intertwined non-trivial band topology and giant Rashba spin splitting

Composite quantum compounds (CQCs) have become an important avenue for the investigation of inter-correlation between two distinct phenomenon in physics. Topological superconductors, axion insulators etc. are few such CQCs which have recently drawn tremendous attention in the community. Topological nontriviality and Rashba spin physics are two different quantum phenomena but can be intertwined within a CQC platform. In this letter, we present a general symmetry based mechanism, supported by \textit{ab-initio} calculations to achieve intertwined giant Rashba splitting and topological non-trivial states simultaneously in a single crystalline system. Such co-existent properties can further be tuned to achieve other rich phenomenon. We have achieved Rashba splitting energy ($ΔE$) and Rashba coefficient ($α$) values as large as 161 meV and 4.87 eV$Å$ respectively in conjunction with Weyl semimetal phase in KSnSb$_{0.625}$Bi$_{0.375}$. Interestingly, these values are even larger than the values reported for widely studied topologically trivial Rashba semiconductor BiTeI. The advantage of our present analysis is that one can achieve various topological phases without compromising the Rashba parameters, within this CQC platform.

Co-existence of Topological Non-trivial and Spin Gapless Semiconducting Behavior in MnPO$_4$: A Composite Quantum Compound

Composite quantum compounds (CQC) are classic example of quantum materials which host more than one apparently distinct quantum phenomenon in physics. Magnetism, topological superconductivity, Rashba physics etc. are few such quantum phenomenon which are ubiquitously observed in several functional materials and can co-exist in CQCs. In this letter, we use {\it ab-initio} calculations to predict the co-existence of two incompatible phenomena, namely topologically non-trivial Weyl semimetal and spin gapless semiconducting (SGS) behavior, in a single crystalline system. SGS belong to a special class of spintronics material which exhibit a unique band structure involving a semiconducting state for one spin channel and a gapless state for the other. We report such a SGS behavior in conjunction with the topologically non-trivial multi-Weyl Fermions in MnPO$_4$. Interestingly, these Weyl nodes are located very close to the Fermi level with the minimal trivial band density. A drumhead like surface state originating from a nodal loop around Y-point in the Brillouin zone is observed. A large value of the simulated anomalous Hall conductivity (1265 $Ω^{-1} cm^{-1}$) indirectly reflects the topological non-trivial behavior of this compound. Such co-existent quantum phenomena are not common in condensed matter systems and hence it opens up a fertile ground to explore and achieve newer functional materials.

High T$_C$ ferromagnetic inverse Heusler alloys: A comparative study of Fe$_2$RhSi and Fe$_2$RhGe

We report the results of experimental investigations on structural, magnetic, resistivity, caloric properties of Fe$_2$RhZ (Z=Si,Ge) along with \textit{ab-initio} band structure calculations using first principle simulations. Both these alloys are found to crystallize in inverse Heusler structure but with disorder in tetrahedral sites between Fe and Rh. Fe$_2$RhSi has saturation moment of 5.00 $μ_B$ and while its counterpart has 5.19 $μ_B$. Resistivity measurement reveals metallic nature in both of them. Theoretical simulations using generalized gradient approximation(GGA) predict inverse Heusler structure with ferromagnetic ordering as ground state for both the alloys. However it underestimates the experimentally observed moments. GGA+$U$ approach, with Hubbard $U$ values estimated from density functional perturbation theory helps to improve the comparison of the experimental results. Fe$_2$RhSi is found to be half metallic ferromagnet while Fe$_2$RhGe is not. Varying $U$ values on Fe and Rh sites does not change the net moment much in Fe$_2$RhSi, unlike in Fe$_2$RhGe. Relatively small exchange splitting of orbitals in Fe$_2$RhGe compared to that of Fe$_2$RhSi is the reason for not opening the band gap in the minority spin channel in the former. High ordering temperature and moment make Fe$_2$RhSi useful for spintronics applications.

Symmetry protection and giant Fermi arcs from multifold fermions in binary, ternary, and quaternary compounds

Higher-fold chiral fermions that go beyond two-fold Weyl fermions have recently been reported in crystalline systems. Here, we focus on such excitations in several binary, ternary and quaternary alloys/compounds with CoGe, BiSbPt and KMgBO3 as the representative examples that belong to the crystal space group (SG) 198. We found distinct three-fold, four-fold and six-fold chiral fermions in the bulk via Density Functional computations. We provide general symmetry arguments for the protection of these degeneracies with special emphasis on the four-fold fermions. Our surface spectra simulations show that the size of Fermi arcs resulting from these chiral fermions are large, robust and untouched from the bulk states due to the near absence of trivial bulk Fermi pockets. All these features make these systems -- especially CoGe and KMgBO3 -- promising topological semimetal candidates to realize higher-fold fermions in future photo-emission and transport experiments.

Bipolar Magnetic Semiconducting Behavior in VNbRuAl: A New Spintronic Material for Spin Filters

We report the theoretical prediction of a new class of spintronic materials, namely bipolar magnetic semiconductor (BMS), which is also supported by our experimental data. BMS acquires a unique band structure with unequal band gaps for spin up and down channels, and thus are useful for tunable spin transport based applications such as spin filters. The valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB) in BMS approach the Fermi level through opposite spin channels, and hence facilitate to achieve reversible spin polarization which are controllable via applied gate voltage. We report the quaternary Heusler alloy VNbRuAl to exactly possess the band structure of BMS. The alloy is found to crystallize in LiMgPdSn prototype structure (space group $F\bar{4}3m$) with B$2$ disorder and lattice parameter 6.15 Å. The resistivity and Hall measurements show a two channel semiconducting behavior and a quasi linear dependence of negative magneto resistance (MR) indicating the possible semiconducting nature. Interestingly, VNbRuAl also shows a fully compensated ferrimagnetic (FCF) behavior with vanishing net magnetization (m$_s$$\sim$ $10^{-3}$ $μ_B/f.u.$) and significantly high ordering temperature ($> 900$ K). Unlike conventional FCF, vanishing moment in this case appears to be the result of a combination of long range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering and the inherent B2 disorder of the crystal. This study opens up the possibility of finding a class of materials for AFM spintronics, with great significance both from fundamental and applied fronts.

A Multimodal Memes Classification: A Survey and Open Research Issues

Memes are graphics and text overlapped so that together they present concepts that become dubious if one of them is absent. It is spread mostly on social media platforms, in the form of jokes, sarcasm, motivating, etc. After the success of BERT in Natural Language Processing (NLP), researchers inclined to Visual-Linguistic (VL) multimodal problems like memes classification, image captioning, Visual Question Answering (VQA), and many more. Unfortunately, many memes get uploaded each day on social media platforms that need automatic censoring to curb misinformation and hate. Recently, this issue has attracted the attention of researchers and practitioners. State-of-the-art methods that performed significantly on other VL dataset, tends to fail on memes classification. In this context, this work aims to conduct a comprehensive study on memes classification, generally on the VL multimodal problems and cutting edge solutions. We propose a generalized framework for VL problems. We cover the early and next-generation works on VL problems. Finally, we identify and articulate several open research issues and challenges. This is the first study that presents the generalized view of the advanced classification techniques concerning memes classification to the best of our knowledge. We believe this study presents a clear road-map for the Machine Learning (ML) research community to implement and enhance memes classification techniques.

Robust topological Hall effect driven by tunable noncoplanar magnetic state in Mn-Pt-In inverse tetragonal Heusler alloys

Manipulation of magnetic ground states by effective control of competing magnetic interactions has led to the finding of many exotic magnetic states. In this direction, the tetragonal Heusler compounds consisting of multiple magnetic sublattices and crystal symmetry favoring chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provide an ideal base to realize non-trivial magnetic structures. Here, we present the observation of a large robust topological Hall effect (THE) in the multi-sublattice Mn$_{2-x}$PtIn Heusler magnets. The topological Hall resistivity, which originates from the non-vanishing real space Berry curvature in the presence of non-zero scalar spin chirality, systematically decreases with decreasing the magnitude of the canting angle of the magnetic moments at different sublattices. With help of first principle calculations, magnetic and neutron diffraction measurements, we establish that the presence of a tunable non-coplanar magnetic structure arising from the competing Heisenberg exchanges and chiral DMI from the D$_{2d}$ symmetry structure is responsible for the observed THE. The robustness of the THE with respect to the degree of non-collinearity adds up a new degree of freedom for designing THE based spintronic devices.

Symmetry driven topological phases in XAgBi (X=Ba,Sr): An Ab-initio hybrid functional calculations

Density functional theory (DFT) approaches have been ubiquitously used to predict topological order and non-trivial band crossings in real materials, like Dirac, Weyl semimetals and so on. However, use of less accurate exchange-correlation functional often yields false prediction of non-trivial band order leading to misguide the experimental judgment about such materials. Using relatively more accurate hybrid functional exchange-correlation, we explore a set of (already) experimentally synthesized materials (crystallizing in space group P6_3/mmc) Our calculations based on more accurate functional helps to correct various previous predictions for this material class. Based on point group symmetry analysis and ab-initio calculations, we systematically show how lattice symmetry breaking via alloy engineering manifests different fermionic behavior, namely Dirac, triple point and Weyl in a single material. Out of various compounds, XAgBi (X=Ba,Sr) turn out to be two ideal candidates, in which the topological nodal point lie very close to the Fermi level, within minimal/no extra Fermi pocket. We further studied the surface states and Fermi arc topology on the surface of Dirac, triple point and Weyl semimetallic phases of BaAgBi. We firmly believe that, while the crystal symmetry is essential to protect the band crossings, the use of accurate exchange correlation functional in any DFT calculation is an important necessity for correct prediction of band order which can be trusted and explored in future experiments.

Unique Dirac and Triple point fermiology in simple transition metals and their binary alloys

Noble metal surfaces (Au, Ag and Cu etc.) have been extensively studied for the Shockley type surface states (SSs). Very recently, some of these Shockley SSs have been understood from the topological consideration, with the knowledge of global properties of electronic structure. In this letter, we show the existence of Dirac like excitations in the elemental noble metal Ru, Re and Os based on symmetry analysis and first principle calculations. The unique SSs driven Fermi arcs have been investigated in details for these metals. Our calculated SSs and Fermi arcs are consistent with the previous transport and photo-emission results. We attribute these Dirac excitation mediated Fermi arc topology to be the possible reasons behind several existing transport anomalies, such as large non-saturating magneto resistance, anomalous Nernst electromotive force and its giant oscillations, magnetic breakdown etc. We further show that the Dirac like excitations in these elemental metal can further be tuned to three component Fermionic excitations, using symmetry allowed alloy mechanism.

First-principles concentration-wave approach to predict incipient order in high-entropy alloys: case of Ti$_{0.25}$CrFeNiAl$_{x}$

Multi-principal-element alloys, including high-entropy alloys, experience segregation or partially-ordering as they are cooled to lower temperatures. For Ti$_{0.25}$CrFeNiAl$_{x}$, experiments suggest a partially-ordered B2 phase, whereas CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) predicts a region of L2$_{1}$+B2 coexistence. We employ first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) based electronic-structure approach to assess stability of phases of alloys with arbitrary compositions and Bravais lattices (A1/A2/A3). In addition, DFT-based linear-response theory has been utilized to predict Warren-Cowley short-range order (SRO) in these alloys, which reveals potentially competing long-range ordered phases. The resulting SRO is uniquely analyzed using concentration-waves analysis for occupation probabilities in partially-ordered states, which is then be assessed for phase stability by direct DFT calculations. Our results are in good agreement with experiments and CALPHAD in Al-poor regions ($x \le 0.75$) and with CALPHAD in Al-rich region ($0.75 \le {x} \le 1$), and they suggest more careful experiments in Al-rich region are needed. Our DFT-based electronic-structure and SRO predictions supported by concentration-wave analysis are shown to be a powerful method for fast assessment of competing phases and their stability in multi-principal-element alloys.

Exotic multiferroic properties of spinel structured $AB_2O_4$ compounds: A Monte Carlo Study

Spinel structured compounds, $AB_2O_4$, are special because of their exotic multiferroic properties. In $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$), a switchable polarization has been observed experimentally due to a non-collinear magnetic spin order. In this article, we demonstrated the microscopic origin behind such magnetic spin order, hysteresis, polarisation and the so-called magnetic compensation effect in $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$, $Ni$) using Monte Carlo simulation. With a careful choice of the exchange interaction, we were able to explain various experimental findings such as magnetization vs. temperature (T) behavior, conical stability, unique magnetic ordering and polarization in a representative compound $CoCr_2O_4$ which is the best known multiferroic compound in the $AB_2O_4$ spinel family. We have also studied the effect of $Fe$-substitution in $CoCr_2O_4$, with an onset of few exotic phenomena such as magnetic compensation and sign reversible exchange bias effect. These effects are investigated using an effective interactions mimicking the effect of substitution. Two other compounds in this family, $CoMn_2O_4$ and $CoFe_2O_4$, are also studied where no conical magnetic order and polarisation was observed, as hence provide a distinct contrast. Here all calculations are done using the polarisation calculated by the spin-current model. This model has certain limitation and it works quite good for low temperature and low magnetic field. But the model despite its limitation it can reproduce sign reversible exchange bias and magnetic compensation like phenomena quite well.

Optoelectronic Properties and Defect Physics of Lead-free Photovoltaic Absorbers Cs$_2$Au$^{I}$Au$^{III}$X$_6$ (X=I, Br)

Stability and toxicity issues with the hybrid lead iodide perovskite MAPbI$_3$ necessitate a hunt for potential alternatives. Here, we shed light on promising photovoltaic properties of gold mixed-valence halide perovskites Cs$_2$Au$_2$X$_6$ (X = I, Br, Cl). They satisfy fundamental requirements such as nontoxicity, better stability, a band gap in the visible range, and a low excitonic binding energy. Our study shows a favorable electronic structure, resulting in a high optical-transition strength, and thus a sharp rise in the absorption spectrum near the band gap. This, in turn, yields a very high short-circuit current density and hence higher simulated efficiency compared with MAPbI$_3$. However, careful investigation of defect physics reveals the possibility of deep-level defects (such as V$_X$ , V$_{Cs}$, X$_{Au}$, X$_{Cs}$, Au$_i$, and Au$_X$ , X = I, Br), depending on the growth conditions. These can act as carrier traps and become detrimental to photovoltaic performance. The present study should help in taking necessary precautions in synthesizing these compounds in a controlled chemical environment, which should minimize performance limiting defects and pave the way for future studies on this class of materials.
