Structural, electronic, magnetic and transport properties of equiatomic quaternary Heusler Alloy CoRhMnGe: Theory and Experiment

In this work, we present structural, electronic, magnetic, mechanical and transport properties of equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy, CoRhMnGe using both theoretical and experimental techniques. A detailed structural analysis is performed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS) spectroscopy. The alloy is found to crystallize in Y-type structure having space group $F\bar{4}3m$ (\# 216). The ab-initio simulation pedict half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics leading to large spin polarization. The calculated magnetization is found to be in fair agreement with experiment as well as those predicted by the Slater-Pauling rule, which is a prerequisite for half-metallicity. The magnetic transition temperature($\mathrm{T_{C}}$) is found to be $\sim 760$ K. Measured electrical resistivity in the temperature range 2-400 K also gives an indication of half-metallic behavior. Simulated resistivity matches fairly well with those measured, with the temperature dependant carrier relaxation time lying in the range $1-2$ fs. Effect of hydrostatic pressure on electronic structure, magnetic and mechanical properties are investigated in detail. The alloy is found to preserve half-metallic characteristics upto 30.27 GPa beyond which it transit to metallic phase. No magnetic phase transition is found to occur in the whole range of pressure. The system also satisfies the Born-Huang criteria for mechanical stability upto a limited range of pressure. All these properties make CoRhMnGe alloy promising for spintronics devices.

Hidden and coexistent magnetic phases in Kondo-type Cerium Hexaboride (CeB6)

The heavy fermion material CeB6 shows hidden magnetic ordered phases. Besides well-known Ferromagnetic(FM) and Antiferromagnetic(AFM) phases, CeB6 is speculated to form a unique antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) phase that is orbital in nature. Hidden from many characterization methods that cannot assess orbital ordering, debate continue on the origins. From electronic-structure calculations, we find that these three phases are energetically almost degenerate, suggesting that magnetic domain walls form, possibly with defect boundaries. Only calculations with spin-orbit coupling reproduce most band structures and Fermi surfaces, as found in experiment, indicating the importance of crystal-field splitting. Simulated ionization peaks, i.e., Ce f0 and f1 states, also agree with photoemission data. Small pressures stabilizes the AFM over the FM phase, which is the observed phase at low temperature. We propose to realize such small physical pressure under various situations e.g. effect of intrinsic defects such as vacancies, antisites, surface effects etc.

Bismuth based Half Heusler Alloys with giant thermoelectric figure of merit

Half Heusler (HH) thermoelectric alloys provide a wide platform to choose materials with non-toxic and earth abundant elements. This article presents an ab-initio theoretical evaluation of electrical and thermal transport properties of three Bismuth-based most promising thermoelectric alloys, selected out of 54 stable HH compounds. These are brand new compounds which are recently proposed to be stable (Nature Chem. 7, 308 (2015)) and may have interesting properties. The calculated band structure of the three compounds, namely HfRhBi, ZrIrBi and ZrRhBi, served as a hint for their promising thermoelectric properties. To gain confidence on the theoretical predictions of these unreported systems, we first checked our calculated results for a well studied similar compound, ZrNiSn, and showed reasonable agreement with the measured ones. HfRhBi and ZrIrBi turn out to be narrow band gap while ZrRhBi is a moderate band gap semiconductor. A detailed study of the carrier concentration and temperature dependance of the Seebeck coefficient (S), Power factor (S$^2 σ$), lattice ($κ_L$) and electronic ($κ_e$) thermal conductivity and hence the figure of merit (ZT) is carried out. In contrast to most promising known thermoelectric materials, we found high power factor for these materials (highest S$^2 σ\sim$17.36 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ for p-type ZrIrBi). All the three systems (specially p-type) show high figure of merit, with ZT value as high as 0.45 for ideal crystal. Maximum ZT and the corresponding optimal n- and p-type doping concentrations ($n_c$) are calculated for all the three compounds, which shall certainly pave guidance to future experimental work.

La-doped CH3NH3BaI3 : A Promising Transparent Conductor

Hybrid perovskites (CH3NH3PbI3) is one of the most promising novel materials for solar harvesting. Toxicity of lead (Pb), however, has always remained a concern. We investigated the electronic structure of complete replacement of Pb by alkaline earths (Ca, Sr, Ba) and found it to be wide band gapped (Eg) semiconductors (band gap ~ 3.7 to 4.0 eV), and hence not suitable as absorber material. This opens up a new avenue to explore these materials as transparent conductor (TC). We doped CH3NH3BaI3 (largest Eg) with La, which shifts its Fermi level (EF) at conduction band bottom and induces states at EF for conduction. This is precisely what is required for a transparent conductor. Optical and transport properties simulated from linear response (within Density Functional Theory (DFT)) calculations suggested it to be a very good TC material with a high figure of merit (σ/α), where σ is the electrical conductivity and α is the optical absorption coefficient. This claim is also supported by our calculated results on density of states at EF, effective mass, carrier concentration etc. at various La-doping. We propose CH3NH3(Ba1-xLax)I3 (x~12.5%) to be a good TC material to be used in a all perovskite solar cell.

Crystal structure, stability and optoelectronic properties of the organic-inorganic wide bandgap perovskite CH3NH3BaI3: Candidate for transparent conductor applications

Structural stability, electronic structure and optical properties of CH3NH3BaI3 hybrid perovskite is examined both from theory as well as experiment. Solution-processed thin films of CH3NH3BaI3 exhibited a high band gap of approximately 3.87 eV, which is in excellent agreement with the theoretical estimate of 4 eV. Also, the XRD patterns of the thin films match well with the l-peaks of the simulated pattern obtained from the relaxed unit cell of CH3NH3BaI3, crystallizing in the I4/mcm space group, with lattice parameters, a = 9.30 A, c = 13.94 A. Atom projected density of state and band structure calculations reveal the conduction and valence band edges to be comprised primarily of Barium d-orbitals and Iodine p-orbitals, respectively. The larger band gap of CH3NH3BaI3 compared to CH3NH3PbI3 can be attributed to the lower electro-negativity coupled with the lack of d-orbitals in the valence band of Ba{2+}. A more detailed analysis reveals the excellent chemical and mechanical stability of CH3NH3BaI3 against humidity, unlike its lead halide counterpart, which degrades under such conditions. The dopability of the CH3NH3BaI3 compound e.g. by doping La on the Ba site combined with its structural and mechanical stability under the ambient conditions, suggests this compound as a promising candidate for transparent conductor applications, especially for all perovskite solar cells.

Half-metallic, Co-based quaternary Heuslers for spintronics: defect- and pressure-induced transitions and properties

Heusler compounds offer potential as spintronic devices due to their spin-polarization and half-metallicity properties, where electron spin-majority (minority) manifold exhibits states (band gap) at the electronic chemical potential, yielding full spin-polarization in a single manifold. Yet, Heuslers often exhibit intrinsic disorder that degrades its half-metallicity and spin-polarization. Using density-functional theory, we analyze the electronic and magnetic properties of equiatomic Heusler ($L$2$_{1}$) CoMnCrAl and CoFeCrGe alloys for effects of hydrostatic pressure and intrinsic disorder (thermal antisites, binary swaps, and vacancies). Under pressure, CoMnCrAl undergoes a metallic transition, while half-metallicity in CoFeCrGe is retained for a limited range. Antisite disorder between Co-Al pairs in CoMnCrAl and Co-Ge pairs in CoFeCrGe is energetically the most favored, and retain half-metallic character in Co-excess samples. However, Co-deficient samples undergo a transition from half-metallic to metallic, with a discontinuity in the saturation magnetization. For binary swaps, configurations that compete with the ground state are identified and show no loss of half-metallicity; however, the minority-spin bandgap and magnetic moments vary depending on the atoms swapped. For single binary swaps, there is a significant energy cost in CoMnCrAl but with no loss of half metallicity. Although a few configurations in CoFeCrGe energetically compete with the ground statei, however the minority-spin bandgap and magnetic moments vary depending on the atoms swapped. These informations should help in controlling these potential spintronic materials.

Relation-theoretic metrical coincidence theorems

In this article, we generalize some frequently used metrical notions such as: completeness, closedness, continuity, g-continuity and compatibility to relation-theoretic setting and utilize these relatively weaker notions to prove results on the existence and uniqueness of coincidence points involving a pair of mappings defined on a metric space endowed with an arbitrary binary relation. Particularly, under universal relation our results deduce the classical coincidence point theorems of Goebel (Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci. Ser. Sci. Math. Astron. Phys. 16 (1968) 733-735) and Jungck (Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 9 (4) (1986) 771-779). In process our results generalize, extend, modify and unify several well-known results especially those obtained in Alam and Imdad (J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 17 (4) (2015) 693-702), Karapinar et al: (Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2014:92 (2014) 16 pp), Alam et al: (Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2014:216 (2014) 30 pp), Alam and Imdad (Fixed Point Theory, in press) and Berzig (J. Nonlinear contractions in metric spaces under locally T-transitive binary relations

In this paper, we present a variant of Boyd-Wong fixed point theorem in a metric space equipped with a locally T-transitive binary relation, which under universal relation reduces to Boyd-Wong (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 20 (1969) 458-464) and Jotic (Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 26 (1995) 947-952) fixed point theorems. Also, our results extend several other well-known fixed point theorems such as: Alam and Imdad (J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 17 (4) (2015) 693-702) and Karapinar and Roldan-Lopez-de-Hierro (J. Inequal. Appl. 2014:522 (2014) 12 pp) besides some others.

Electronic structure, magnetism and antisite disorder in CoFeCrGe and CoMnCrAl quaternary Heusler alloys

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of two quaternary Heusler alloys CoFeCrGe (CFCG) and CoMnCrAl (CMCA), promising candidates for spintronics applications. Magnetization measurement shows the saturation magnetization and transition temperature to be $3\; μ_B$, $866$ K and $0.9 \; μ_B$, $358$ K for CFCG and CMCA respectively. The magnetization values agree fairly well with our theoretical results and also obey the Slater-Pauling rule, a prerequisite for half metallicity. A striking difference between the two systems is their structure; CFCG crystallizes in fully ordered Y-type structure while CMCA has L2$_1$ disordered structure. The antisite disorder adds a somewhat unique property to the second compound, which arises due to the probabilistic mutual exchange of Al positions with Cr/Mn and such an effect is possibly expected due to comparable electronegativities of Al and Cr/Mn. {\it Ab-initio} simulation predicted a unique transition from half metallic ferromagnet to metallic antiferromagnet beyond a critical excess amount of Al in the alloy.

Comparable linear contractions in ordered metric spaces

A new spin gapless semiconductor: quaternary Heusler CoFeCrGa alloy

Despite a plethora of materials suggested for spintronic applications, a new class of materials has emerged, namely spin gapless semiconductors (SGS), that offers potentially more advantageous properties than existing ones. These magnetic semiconductors exhibit a finite band gap for one spin channel and a closed gap for the other. Here, supported by the first-principles, electronic-structure calculations, we report the first experimental evidence of SGS behavior in equiatomic quaternary CoFeCrGa, having a cubic Heusler (L21) structure but exhibiting chemical disorder (DO3 structure). CoFeCrGa is found to transform from SGS to half-metallic phase under pressure, which is attributed to unique electronic-structure features. The saturation magnetization (MS) obtained at 8 K agrees with the Slater-Pauling rule and the Curie temperature (TC) is found to exceed 400 K. Carrier concentration (up to 250 K) and electrical conductivity are observed to be nearly temperature independent, prerequisites for SGS. The anomalous Hall coefficient is estimated to be 185 S/cm at 5 K. Considering the SGS properties and high TC, this material appears to be promising for spintronic applications.

High spin polarization and large spin splitting in equiatomic quaternary CoFeCrAl Heusler alloy

In this paper, we investigate CoFeCrAl alloy by means of various experimental techniques and ab-initio calculations to look for half-metallic nature. The alloy is found to exist in the cubic Heusler structure, with presence of B2 ordering. Saturation magnetization (MS) value of about 2 Bohr magneton/f.u. is observed at 8 K under ambient pressure, which is in good agreement with the Slater-Pauling rule. MS values are found to be independent of pressure, which is a prerequisite for half-metals. The ab-initio electronic structure calculations predict half-metallic nature for the alloy with a spin slitting energy of 0.31 eV. Importantly, this system shows a high current spin polarization value of 0.67 [with error of 0.02], as deduced from the point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) measurements. Linear dependence of electrical resistivity with temperature indicates the possibility of reasonably high spin polarization at elevated temperatures (~150 K) as well. All these suggest that CoFeCrAl is a promising material for the spintronic devices.

Spin gapless semiconducting behavior in equiatomic quaternary CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy

Spin gapless semiconductors (SGS) form a new class of magnetic semiconductors, which has a band gap for one spin sub band and zero band gap for the other, and thus are useful for tunable spin transport based applications. In this paper, we report the first experimental evidence for spin gapless semiconducting behavior in CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy. Such a behavior is also confirmed by first principles band structure calculations. The most stable configuration obtained by the theoretical calculation is verified by experiment. The alloy is found to crystallize in the cubic Heusler structure (LiMgPdSn type) with some amount of disorder and has a saturation magnetization of 3.7 Bohr's magneton/f.u.. and Curie temperature of 620 K. The saturation magnetization is found to follow the Slater-Pauling behavior, one of the prerequisites for SGS. Nearly temperature-independent carrier concentration and electrical conductivity is observed from 5 to 300 K. An anomalous Hall coefficient of 162 S/cm is obtained at 5 K. Point contact Andreev reflection data has yielded the current spin polarization value of 0.64, which is found to be robust against the structural disorder. All these properties are quite promising for the spintronic applications such as spin injection and can bridge a gap between the contrasting behavior of half-metallic ferromagnets and semiconductors.

Green's function multiple-scattering theory with a truncated basis set: An Augmented-KKR formalism

Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function, multiple-scattering theory is an efficient site-centered, electronic-structure technique for addressing an assembly of $N$ scatterers. Wave-functions are expanded in a spherical-wave basis on each scattering center and indexed up to a maximum orbital and azimuthal number $L_{max}=(l,m)_{max}$, while scattering matrices, which determine spectral properties, are truncated at $L_{tr}=(l,m)_{tr}$ where phase shifts $δ_{l>l_{tr}}$ are negligible. Historically, $L_{max}$ is set equal to $L_{tr}$; however, a more proper procedure retains free-electron and single-site contributions for $L_{max}>L_{tr}$ with $δ_{l>l_{tr}}$ set to zero [Zhang and Butler, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 46}, 7433]. We present a numerically efficient and accurate \emph{augmented}-KKR Green's function formalism that solves the KKR secular equations by matrix inversion [$\mathcal{R}^3$ process with rank $N(l_{tr}+1)^2$] and includes higher-order $L$ contributions via linear algebra [$\mathcal{R}^2$ process with rank $N(l_{max}+1)^2$]. Augmented-KKR yields properly normalized wave-functions, numerically cheaper basis-set convergence, and a total charge density and electron count that agrees with Lloyd's formula. For fcc Cu, bcc Fe and L$1_0$ CoPt, we present the formalism and numerical results for accuracy and for the convergence of the total energies, Fermi energies, and magnetic moments versus $L_{max}$ for a given $L_{tr}$.

Interplay of force constants in the lattice dynamics of disordered alloys : An ab-initio study

A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, density of states (DOS) etc. bcc TaW and fcc NiPt alloys are considered as the two distinct test cases. Ta-Ta (W-W) bond distance in the alloy is predicted to be smaller (larger) than those in pure Ta (W), which, in turn, yields stiffer (softer) force constants for Ta (W). Pt-Pt force constants in the alloy, however, are predicted to be softer compared to Ni-Ni, due to a large bond distance of the former. Our calculated force constants, phonon spectra and DOS are compared with experiments and other theoretical results, wherever available. Correct trend of present results for the two alloys pave a path for further future studies in more complex alloy systems.

Fermi surfaces and Phase Stability of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$M$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (M=Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)

BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with transition-metal doping exhibits a variety of rich phenomenon from coupling of structure, magnetism, and superconductivity. Using density functional theory, we systematically compare the Fermi surfaces (FS), formation energies ($ΔE_f$), and density of states (DOS) of electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$M$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with M={Co, Ni, Cu, Zn} in tetragonal (I$4/mmm$) and orthorhombic (F$mmm$) structures in nonmagnetic (NM), antiferromagnetic (AFM), and paramagnetic (PM, disordered local moment) states. We explain changes to phase stability ($ΔE_f$) and Fermi surfaces (and nesting) due to chemical and magnetic disorder, and compare to observed/assessed properties and contrast alloy theory with that expected from rigid-band model. With alloying, the DOS changes from common-band (Co,Ni) to split-band (Cu,Zn), which dictates $ΔE_f$ and can overwhelm FS-nesting instabilities, as for Cu,Zn cases.
