The Geometry of Locally Bounded Rational Functions

This paper develops the geometry of locally bounded rational functions on non-singular real algebraic varieties. First various basic geometric and algebraic results regarding these functions are established in any dimension, culminating with a version of {\L}ojasiewicz's inequality. The geometry is further developed for the case of dimension 2, where it can be shown that there exist many of the usual correspondences between the algebra and geometry of these functions that one expects from complex algebraic geometry and from other classes of functions in real algebraic geometry such as regulous functions.

Algebraic Approximation of Cohen-Macaulay Algebras

This paper shows that Cohen-Macaulay algebras can be algebraically approximated in such a way that their Cohen-Macaulayness and minimal Betti numbers are preserved. This is achieved by showing that finitely generated modules over power series rings can be algebraically approximated in a manner that preserves their diagrams of initial exponents and their minimal Betti numbers. These results are also applied to obtain an approximation result for flat homomorphisms from rings of power series to Cohen-Macaulay algebras.

Finite determinacy and approximation of flat maps

This paper considers the problems of finite determinacy and approximation of flat analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces. It is shown that the flatness of analytic maps from germs of real or complex analytic spaces whose local rings are Cohen-Macaulay is finitely determined. Further, it is shown that flat maps from complete intersection and Cohen-Macaulay analytic germs can be arbitrarily closely approximated by algebraic and Nash maps respectively in such a way that the Hilbert-Samuel function of the special fibre is preserved. It is also proved that in the complex case the preservation of the Hilbert-Samuel function implies the preservation of Whitney's tangent cone.

Equisingular algebraic approximation of real and complex analytic germs

We show that a Cohen-Macaulay analytic singularity can be arbitrarily closely approximated by germs of Nash sets which are also Cohen-Macaulay and share the same Hilbert-Samuel function. We also prove that every analytic singularity is topologically equivalent to a Nash singularity with the same Hilbert-Samuel function.

On finite determinacy of complete intersection singularities

We give an elementary combinatorial proof of the following fact: Every real or complex analytic complete intersection germ X is equisingular -- in the sense of the Hilbert-Samuel function -- with a germ of an algebraic set defined by sufficiently long truncations of the defining equations of X.
