Phase structure of the one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory with second nearest-neighbor interactions

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory (LGT) model with hard-core bosons at half-filling, extending previous studies by including second nearest-neighbor (2NN) interactions. Using matrix product state techniques within the density matrix renormalization group, we compute charge gap, static structure factor, pair-pair correlation functions, and entanglement entropy for various interaction strengths and field parameters. We analyze two representative neatest-neighbor interaction strengths ($V_1$) that correspond to the Luttinger liquid (LL) and Mott insulator (MI) phases in the absence of the 2NN interactions. We introduce the 2NN coupling $V_2$ and investigate its impact on the system. Our results reveal very rich behavior. As the 2NN repulsion increases, in the case of small $V_1$, we observe a direct transition from the LL phase to a charge-ordered insulator (COI) phase with four-site ordering pattern, whereas for large $V_1$, we observe a transition from the MI phase with two-site ordering pattern (previously found with only $V_1$ included), going through an intermediate LL region, and finally reaching the COI regime. Additionally, the inclusion of 2NN interactions enhances charge order and suppresses pair coherence, evidenced by sharp peaks in the structure factor and rapid decay in pair-pair correlators. Our work extends the well-studied phase structure of 1D $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT models and demonstrates the interplay between gauge fields, confinement, and extended interactions.

Charge order on a triangular lattice with Mott physics and arbitrary charge density

Triangular-lattice systems attract a lot of attention due to various frustration-induced and strongly correlated effects. Here, we focus on the charge-ordering phenomenon by means of investigation of the extended Hubbard model with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). By considering the intersite nearest-neighbor interaction we have found a very rich phase diagram that contains large number of features, phases, and phase transitions. Among them are pinball-liquid (PL) phases where we distinguish charge-transfer-driven and Mott-localization-driven PLs; phase transitions that change their order as model parameters evolve (from discontinuous to continuous); very strong particle-hole asymmetry. Various features of the phase diagram are found to be better understood by means of the simple mean-field approximation (MFA). Moreover, besides helping with interpretation of the phase diagram, the MFA results together with results for the atomic-limit model are found to be able to set rather good expectations on how the DMFT phase diagram should look like. Nevertheless, a few features were not expected and are found within the DMFT, such as a small-region intermediate metallic phase on an electron-doped side of the phase diagram.

Particle-Hole Asymmetry and Pinball Liquid in a Triangular-Lattice Extended Hubbard Model within Mean-Field Approximation

Recently, triangular lattice models have received a lot of attention since they can describe a number of strongly-correlated materials that exhibit superconductivity and various magnetic and charge orders. In this research we present an extensive analysis of the charge-ordering phenomenon of the triangular-lattice extended Hubbard model with repulsive onsite and nearest-neighbor interaction, arbitrary charge concentration, and $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ supercell (3-sublattice assumption). The model is solved in the ground state with the mean-field approximation which allowed to identify $8$ charge-ordered phases and a large variety of phase transitions. An exotic pinball-liquid phase was found and described. Moreover, strong particle-hole asymmetry of the phase diagram is found to play an important role for triangular lattices. The detailed analysis of band structures, unavailable for more advanced methods, such as dynamical mean-field theory, allowed us to interpret the found triangular-lattice phases and provided a great insight into the mechanisms behind the phase transitions that can also be met when correlation effects are taken into account. The complexity of the mean-field phase diagram showed the importance and usefulness of the results for the further research with correlation effects included. Together with atomic-limit approximation it can serve them as both a starting point, and a tool to interpret results.

Spin-polarized superconducting phase in semiconducting system with next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the honeycomb lattice

The particles in the honeycomb lattice with on-site $s$-wave pairing exhibit many interesting behaviors, which can be described in the framework of the Hubbard model. Among others, at the half-filling, some critical value $|U_c|$ of pairing interaction $U<0$ exists that, for $U<U_c$, the superconducting phase becomes unstable. Introduction of the nonzero hopping $t'$ between next-nearest-neighbor sites strongly modifies the physical properties of the system. Here, we discuss the behavior of the system for $t' \neq 0$ (at the ground state), where the hopping between next-nearest neighbors leads to change of the order of phase transition between superconducting and normal phases from discontinuous to continuous one in the external magnetic field $h$. We show that this behavior is strongly dependent on $t'$ and associated with the Dirac cones in the non-interacting band structure of the system. For non-zero magnetic field and for some range of $t'$, a spin-polarized superconducting phase occurs in the ground state phase diagram (only at the half-filling and for $h\neq 0$).

Many-body correlations in one-dimensional optical lattices with alkaline-earth(-like) atoms

We explore the rich nature of correlations in the ground state of ultracold atoms trapped in state-dependent optical lattices. In particular, we consider interacting fermionic ytterbium or strontium atoms, realizing a two-orbital Hubbard model with two spin components. We analyze the model in one-dimensional setting with the experimentally relevant hierarchy of tunneling and interaction amplitudes by means of exact diagonalization and matrix product states approaches, and study the correlation functions in density, spin, and orbital sectors as functions of variable densities of atoms in the ground and metastable excited states. We show that in certain ranges of densities these atomic systems demonstrate strong density-wave, ferro- and antiferromagnetic, as well as antiferroorbital correlations.

Connection between the semiconductor--superconductor transition and the spin-polarized superconducting phase in the honeycomb lattice

The band structure of noninteracting fermions in the honeycomb lattice exhibits the Dirac cones at the corners of the Brillouin zone. As a consequence, fermions in this lattice manifest a semiconducting behavior below some critical value of the onsite attraction, $U_{c}$. However, above $U_{c}$, the superconducting phase can occur. We discuss an interplay between the semiconductor--superconductor transition and the possibility of realization of the spin-polarized superconductivity (the so-called Sarma phase). We show that the critical interaction can be tuned by the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping in the absence of the magnetic field. Moreover, a critical value of the NNN hopping exists, defining a range of parameters for which the semiconducting phase can emerge. In the weak coupling limit case, this quantum phase transition occurs for the absolute value of the NNN hopping equal to one third of the hopping between the nearest neighbors. Similarly, in the presence of the magnetic field, the Sarma phase can appear, but only in a range of parameters for which initially the semiconducting state is observed. Both of these aspects are attributed to the Lifshitz transition, which is induced by the NNN hopping as well as the external magnetic field.

Orbital ordering of ultracold alkaline-earth atoms in optical lattices

We report on a dynamical mean-field theoretical analysis of emerging low-temperature phases in multicomponent gases of fermionic alkaline-earth(-like) atoms in state-dependent optical lattices. Using the example of $^{173}$Yb atoms, we show that a two-orbital mixture with two nuclear spin components is a promising candidate for studies of not only magnetic but also staggered orbital ordering peculiar to certain solid-state materials. We calculate and study the phase diagram of the full Hamiltonian with parameters similar to existing experiments and reveal an antiferroorbital phase. This long-range-ordered phase is inherently stable, and we analyze the change of local and global observables across the corresponding transition lines, paving the way for experimental observations. Furthermore, we suggest a realistic extension of the system to include and probe a Jahn-Teller source field playing one of the key roles in real crystals.

Phase separations induced by a trapping potential in one-dimensional fermionic systems as a source of core-shell structures

Ultracold fermionic gases in optical lattices give a great opportunity for creating different types of novel states. One of them is phase separation induced by a trapping potential between different types of superfluid phases. The core-shell structures, occurring in systems with a trapping potential, are a good example of such separations. The types and the sequences of phases which emerge in such structures can depend on spin-imbalance, shape of the trap and on-site interaction strength. In this work, we investigate the properties of such structures within an attractive Fermi gas loaded in the optical lattice, in the presence of the trapping potential and their relations to the phase diagram of the homogeneous system. Moreover, we show how external and internal parameters of the system and parameters of the trap influence their properties. In particular, we show a possible occurrence of the core-shell structure in a system with a harmonic trap, containing the BCS and FFLO states. Additionally, we find a spatial separation of two superfuild states in the system, one in the BCS limit as well as the other one in the tightly bound local pairs (BEC) regime.

Suppression and revival of long-range ferromagnetic order in the multiorbital Fermi-Hubbard model

By means of dynamical mean-field theory allowing for complete account of SU(2) rotational symmetry of interactions between spin-1/2 particles, we observe a strong effect of suppression of ferromagnetic order in the multiorbital Fermi-Hubbard model in comparison with a widely used restriction to density-density interactions. In the case of orbital degeneracy, we show that the suppression effect is the strongest in the two-orbital model (with effective spin $S_{\rm eff}=1$) and significantly decreases when considering three orbitals ($S_{\rm eff}=3/2$), thus magnetic ordering can effectively revive for the same range of parameters, in agreement with arguments based on vanishing of quantum fluctuations in the limit of classical spins ($S_{\rm eff}\to\infty$). We analyze a connection to the double-exchange model and observe high importance of spin-flip processes there as well.

Reentrant Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluidity in the honeycomb lattice

We study superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in the honeycomb lattice that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain ground state phase diagrams including some unconventional superconducting phases such as the Fulde--Ferrell--Larkin--Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We show that this phase is characterized by atypical behaviour of the Cooper pairs total momentum in the external magnetic field. We show that the momentum changes its value as well as direction with change of the system parameters. We discuss the influence of van Hove singularities on the possibility of the reentrant FFLO phase occurrence, without a BCS precursor.

Phase transitions in quasi-one dimensional system with unconventional superconductivity

The paper is devoted to a study of superconducting properties of population-imbalanced fermionic mixtures in quasi-one dimensional optical lattices. The system can be effectively described by the attractive Hubbard model with the Zeeman magnetic field term. We investigated the ground state phase diagram of the model as a function of the chemical potential and the magnetic field. The ground state of the system exhibits the conventional BCS-type superconductivity as well as the unconventional so-called Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, in which the total momentum of Cooper pairs is non-zero. We determine the orders of transitions as well as the behavior of order parameters with a change of the model parameters.

Quantum engineering of Majorana quasiparticles in one-dimensional optical lattices

We propose a feasible way of engineering Majorana-type quasiparticles in ultracold fermionic gases on a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. For this purpose, imbalanced ultracold atoms interacting by the spin-orbit coupling should be hybridized with a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) molecular cloud. By constraining the profile of an internal defect potential we show that the Majorana-type excitations can be created or annihilated. This process is modelled within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. This study is relevant also to nanoscopic 1D superconductors where modification of the internal defect potential can be obtained by electrostatic means.

Magnetic Lifshitz transition and its consequences in multi-band iron-based superconductors

In this paper we address Lifshitz transition induced by applied external magnetic field in a case of iron-based superconductors, in which a difference between the Fermi level and the edges of the bands is relatively small. We introduce and investigate a two-band model with intra-band pairing in the relevant parameters regime to address a generic behaviour of a system with hole-like and electron-like bands in external magnetic field. Our results show that two Lifshitz transitions can develop in analysed systems and the first one occurs in the superconducting phase and takes place at approximately constant magnetic field. The chosen sets of the model parameters can describe characteristic band structure of iron-based superconductors and thus the obtained results can explain the experimental observations in FeSe and Co-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds.

Critical behaviour in one dimension: unconventional pairing, phase separation, BEC-BCS crossover and magnetic Lifshitz transition

We study the superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model (AHM) in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain the ground state phase diagrams including some unconventional superconducting phases such as the Fulde--Ferrell--Larkin--Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, and the $η$ phase (an extremal case of the FFLO phase), both for the case of a fixed chemical potential and for a fixed number of particles. It allows to determine optimal regimes for the FFLO phase as well as $η$-pairing stability. We also investigate the evolution from the weak coupling (BCS-like limit) to the strong coupling limit of tightly bound local pairs (BEC) with increasing attraction, at $T=0$. Finally, the obtained results show that despite of the occurrence of the Lifshitz transition induced by an external magnetic field, the superconducting state can still exist in the system, at higher magnetic field values.

Orbital magnetism of ultracold fermionic gases in a lattice: dynamical mean-field approach

We study finite-temperature properties of ultracold four-component mixtures of alkaline-earth-like atoms in optical lattices that can be effectively described by the two-band spin-$1/2$ Hubbard model including the Hund's exchange coupling term. Our main goal is to investigate the effect of exchange interactions on finite-temperature magnetic phases for a wide range of lattice fillings. We use the dynamical mean-field theory approach and its real-space generalization to obtain finite-temperature phase diagrams including transitions to magnetically-ordered phases. It allows to determine optimal experimental regimes for approaching long-range ferromagnetic ordering in ultracold gases. We also calculate the entropy in the vicinity of magnetically-ordered phases, which provides quantitative predictions for on-going and future experiments aiming at approaching and studying long-range ordered states in optical lattices.
