Emergence for diffeomorphisms with nonzero Lyapunov exponents

We consider the set of points with high pointwise emergence for $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms preserving a hyperbolic measure. We find a lower bound on the Hausdorff dimension of this set in terms of unstable Hausdorff dimension of the hyperbolic measure. If the measure is an SRB, we prove that the set of points with high emergence has full Hausdorff dimension.

Highly irregular orbits for subshifts of finite type: large intersections and emergence

In their recent paper [KNS2019], the first author, S. Kiriki, and T. Soma introduced a concept of pointwise emergence to measure the complexity of irregular orbits. They constructed a residual subset of the full shift with high pointwise emergence. In this paper we consider the set of points with high pointwise emergence for topologically mixing subshifts of finite type. We show that this set has full topological entropy, full Hausdorff dimension, and full topological pressure for any Hölder continuous potential. Furthermore, we show that this set belongs to a certain class of sets with large intersection property. This is a natural generalization of [FP2011] to pointwise emergence and Carathéodory dimension.

Statistical properties of Lorentz gases on aperiodic tilings, Part 1

We consider the Lorentz gas model of category A (that is, with no corners and of finite horizon) on aperiodic repetitive tilings of $\mathbb{R}^2$ of finite local complexity. We show that the compact factor of the collision map has the K property, from which we derive mixing for pattern-equivariant functions as well as the planar ergodicity of the Lorentz gas flow.

Equilibrium measures for some partially hyperbolic systems

We study thermodynamic formalism for topologically transitive partially hyperbolic systems in which the center-stable bundle satisfies a bounded expansion property, and show that every potential function satisfying the Bowen property has a unique equilibrium measure. Our method is to use tools from geometric measure theory to construct a suitable family of reference measures on unstable leaves as a dynamical analogue of Hausdorff measure, and then show that the averaged pushforwards of these measures converge to a measure that has the Gibbs property and is the unique equilibrium measure.

Thermodynamics via inducing

We consider continuous maps $f:X\to X$ on compact metric spaces admitting inducing schemes of hyperbolic type introduced in [15] as well as the induced maps $\tilde{f}:\tilde{X}\to\tilde{X}$ and the associated tower maps $\hat{f}:\hat{X} \to \hat {X}$. For a certain class of potential functions $φ$ on $X$, which includes all Hölder continuous functions, we establish thermodynamic formalism for each of the above three systems and we describe some relations between the corresponding equilibrium measures. Furthermore we study ergodic properties of these equilibrium measures including the Bernoulli property, decay of correlations, and the Central Limit Theorem (CLT). Finally, we prove analyticity of the pressure function for the three systems.

Equilibrium states in dynamical systems via geometric measure theory

Given a dynamical system with a uniformly hyperbolic (`chaotic') attractor, the physically relevant Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measure can be obtained as the limit of the dynamical evolution of the leaf volume along local unstable manifolds. We extend this geometric construction to the substantially broader class of equilibrium states corresponding to Hölder continuous potentials; these states arise naturally in statistical physics and play a crucial role in studying stochastic behavior of dynamical systems. The key step in our construction is to replace leaf volume with a reference measure that is obtained from a Carathéodory dimension structure via an analogue of the construction of Hausdorff measure. In particular, we give a new proof of existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states that does not use standard techniques based on Markov partitions or the specification property; our approach can be applied to systems that do not have Markov partitions and do not satisfy the specification property.
