On GIT quotients of the symplectic group, stability and bifurcations of symmetric orbits

We provide topological obstructions to the existence of orbit cylinders of symmetric orbits, for mechanical systems preserved by antisymplectic involutions (e.g. the restricted three-body problem). Such cylinders induce continuous paths which do not cross the bifurcation locus of suitable GIT quotients of the symplectic group, which are branched manifolds whose topology provide the desired obstructions. Namely, the complement of the corresponding loci consist of several connected components which we enumerate and explicitly describe; by construction these cannot be joined by a path induced by an orbit cylinder. Our construction extends the notions from Krein theory (which only applies for elliptic orbits), to allow also for the case of symmetric orbits which are hyperbolic. This gives a general theoretical framework for the study of stability and bifurcations of symmetric orbits, with a view towards practical and numerical implementations within the context of space mission design. We shall explore this in upcoming work.

A generalized Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem

We prove a generalization of the classical Poincaré--Birkhoff theorem for Liouville domains, in arbitrary even dimensions. This is inspired by the existence of global hypersurfaces of section for the spatial case of the restricted three-body problem (as proved by the authors in arXiv:2011.10386).

Planarity in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We obtain several results for (iterated) planar contact manifolds in higher dimensions: (1) Iterated planar contact manifolds are not weakly symplectically semi-fillable. This generalizes a 3-dimensional result of Etnyre to a higher-dimensional setting. (2) They do not arise as nonseparating weak contact-type hypersurfaces in closed symplectic manifolds. This generalizes a result by Albers-Bramham-Wendl. (3) They satisfy the Weinstein conjecture, i.e. every contact form admits a closed Reeb orbit. This is proved by an alternative approach as that of [Acu], and is a higher-dimensional generalization of a result of Abbas-Cieliebak-Hofer. The results follow as applications from a suitable symplectic handle attachment, which bears some independent interest.

5-dimensional Bourgeois contact structures are tight

Given a contact structure on a manifold $V$ together with a supporting open book decomposition, Bourgeois gave an explicit construction for a contact structure on $V \times \mathbb{T}^2$. We prove that all such structures are universally tight in dimension $5$, independent on whether the original contact manifold is tight or overtwisted.

SFT computations and intersection theory in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We construct infinitely many non-diffeomorphic examples of $5$-dimensional contact manifolds which are tight, admit no strong fillings, and do not have Giroux torsion. We obtain obstruction results for symplectic cobordisms, for which we give a proof not relying on the polyfold abstract perturbation scheme for SFT. These results are part of the author's PhD thesis, and are the first applications of higher-dimensional Siefring intersection theory for holomorphic curves and hypersurfaces.

Algebraic and Giroux torsion in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We construct examples in any odd dimension of contact manifolds with finite and non-zero algebraic torsion (in the sense of Latschev-Wendl), which are therefore tight and do not admit strong symplectic fillings. We prove that Giroux torsion implies algebraic $1$-torsion in any odd dimension, which proves a conjecture by Massot-Niederkrueger-Wendl. These results are part of the author's PhD thesis.

Holomorphic curves in the presence of holomorphic hypersurface foliations

We prove a result which establishes restrictions on the pseudoholomorphic curves which can exist in a stable Hamiltonian manifold in the presence of certain $\mathbb{R}$-invariant foliations of the symplectization by holomorphic hypersurfaces. This result has applications in the first author's work on algebraic torsion in higher dimensional contact manifolds.

Algebraic Torsion in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We construct examples in any odd dimension of contact manifolds with finite and non-zero algebraic torsion (in the sense of Latschev-Wendl), which are therefore tight and do not admit strong symplectic fillings. We prove that Giroux torsion implies algebraic $1$-torsion in any odd dimension, which proves a conjecture by Massot-Niederkrueger-Wendl. We construct infinitely many non-diffeomorphic examples of $5$-dimensional contact manifolds which are tight, admit no strong fillings, and do not have Giroux torsion. We obtain obstruction results for symplectic cobordisms, for which we give a proof not relying on SFT machinery. We give a tentative definition of a higher-dimensional spinal open book decomposition, based on the $3$-dimensional one of Lisi-van Horn Morris-Wendl. An appendix written in co-authorship with Richard Siefring gives a basic outline of the intersection theory for punctured holomorphic curves and hypersurfaces, which generalizes his $3$-dimensional results of Siefring to higher dimensions. From the intersection theory we obtain an application to codimension-$2$ holomorphic foliations, which we use to restrict the behaviour of holomorphic curves in our examples.

On sums of three squares

We prove that a positive integer not of the form, 4^{k}(8m+7) can be expressible as a sum of three or fewer squares by using some results of Kane and Sun on mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers.

On a generalization of P(3,n)

By using techniques of poset representation theory, we present a formula for the number of partitions of a positive integer into three polygonal numbers.
