Two-Sided Gravitational Mirror: Sealing off Curvature Singularities

A gravitational mirror is a non-singular finite redshift surface which bounces all incident null geodesics. While a white mirror (outward bouncing) resembles 't Hooft's brick wall, a black mirror (inward bouncing) offers a novel mechanism for sealing off curvature singularities. The geometry underlying a two-sided mirror is characterized by a single signature change, to be contrasted with the signature flip which governs the black hole geometry. To demonstrate the phenomenon analytically, we derive an exact, static, radially symmetric, two-sided mirror solution, which asymptotes the massless BTZ black hole background, and then probe the local structure of a massive mirror.

Spontaneously Induced General Relativity: Holographic Interior for Reissner-Nordstrom Exterior

If general relativity is spontaneously induced, that is if the reciprocal Newton constant serves as a VEV, the electrically charged black hole limit is governed by a Davidson-Gurwich phase transition which occurs precisely at the would have been outer horizon. The transition profile which connects the exterior Reissner-Nordstrom solution with the novel interior is analytically derived. The inner core is characterized by a vanishing spatial volume and constant surface gravity, and in some respects, resembles a maximally stretched horizon. The Komar mass residing inside any concentric interior sphere is proportional to the surface area of that sphere, and consequently, is non-negative definite and furthermore non-singular at the origin. The Kruskal structure is recovered, admitting the exact Hawking imaginary time periodicity, but unconventionally, with the conic defect defused at the origin. The corresponding holographic entropy packing locally saturates the 't Hooft-Susskind-Bousso holographic bound, thus making the core Nature's ultimate information storage.

Holographic Shell Model: Stack Data Structure inside Black Holes

We suggest that bits of information inhabit, universally and holographically, the entire black hole interior, a bit per a light sheet unit interval of order Planck area difference. The number of distinguishable (tagged by a binary code) configurations, counted within the context of a discrete holographic shell model, is given by the Catalan series. The area entropy formula is recovered, including the universal logarithmic correction, and the equipartition of mass per degree of freedom is proven. The black hole information storage resembles a stack data structure.

Holographic Entropy Packing inside a Black Hole

If general relativity is spontaneously induced, the black hole limit is governed by a phase transition which occurs precisely at the would have been horizon. The exterior Schwarzschild solution then connects with a novel core of vanishing spatial volume. The Kruskal structure, admitting the exact Hawking imaginary time periodicity, is recovered, with the conic defect defused at the origin, rather than at the horizon. The entropy stored inside \textbf{any} interior sphere is universal, equal to a quarter of its surface area, thus locally saturating the 't Hooft-Susskind holographic bound. The associated Komar mass and material energy functions are non-singular.

Hollowgraphy Driven Holography: Black Hole with Vanishing Volume Interior

Hawking-Bekenstein entropy formula seems to tell us that no quantum degrees of freedom can reside in the interior of a black hole. We suggest that this is a consequence of the fact that the volume of any interior sphere of finite surface area simply vanishes. Obviously, this is not the case in general relativity. However, we show that such a phenomenon does occur in various gravitational theories which admit a spontaneously induced general relativity. In such theories, due to a phase transition (one parameter family degenerates) which takes place precisely at the would have been horizon, the recovered exterior Schwarzschild solution connects, by means of a self-similar transition profile, with a novel 'hollow' interior exhibiting a vanishing spatial volume and a locally varying Newton constant. This constitutes the so-called 'hollowgraphy' driven holography.

Zero Cosmological Constant from Normalized General Relativity

Normalizing the Einstein-Hilbert action by the volume functional makes the theory invariant under constant shifts in the Lagrangian. The associated field equations then resemble unimodular gravity whose otherwise arbitrary cosmological constant is now determined as a Machian universal average. We prove that an empty space-time is necessarily Ricci tensor flat, and demonstrate the vanishing of the cosmological constant within the scalar field paradigm. The cosmological analysis, carried out at the mini-superspace level, reveals a vanishing cosmological constant for a Universe which cannot be closed as long as gravity is attractive. Finally, we give an example of a normalized theory of gravity which does give rise to a non-zero cosmological constant.

Brane Gravitational Extension of Dirac's "Extensible Model of the Electron"

A gravitational extension of Dirac's "Extensible model of the electron" is presented. The Dirac bubble, treated as a 3-dim electrically charged brane, is dynamically embedded within a 4-dim $Z_{2}$-symmetric Reissner-Nordstrom bulk. Crucial to our analysis is the gravitational extension of Dirac's brane variation prescription; its major effect is to induce a novel geometrically originated contribution to the energy-momentum tensor on the brane. In turn, the effective potential which governs the evolution of the bubble exhibits a global minimum, such that the size of the bubble stays finite (Planck scale) even at the limit where the mass approaches zero. This way, without fine-tuning, one avoids the problem so-called 'classical radius of the electron'.

Artifact Dark Matter from Unified Brane Gravity

Adopting Dirac's brane variation prescription, the energy-momentum tensor of a brane gets supplemented by a geometrical (embedding originated) dark component. While the masslessness of the graviton is preserved, and the Newton force law is recovered, the corresponding Newton constant is necessarily lower than the one which governs FRW cosmology. This has the potential to puzzle out cosmological dark matter, a subsequent conjecture concerning galactic dark matter follows.

On The Problem of Vacuum energy in Brane Theories

We point out that modern brane theories suffer from a severe vacuum energy problem. To be specific, the Casimir energy associated with the matter fields confined to the brane, is stemming from the one and the same localization mechanism which forms the brane itself, and is thus generically unavoidable. Possible practical solutions are discussed, including in particular spontaneously broken supersymmetry, and quantum mechanically induced brane tension.

Unified Brane Gravity: Cosmological Dark Matter from Scale Dependent Newton Constant

We analyze, within the framework of unified brane gravity, the weak-field perturbations caused by the presence of matter on a 3-brane. Although deviating from the Randall-Sundrum approach, the masslessness of the graviton is still preserved. In particular, the four-dimensional Newton force law is recovered, but serendipitously, the corresponding Newton constant is shown to be necessarily lower than the one which governs FRW cosmology. This has the potential to puzzle out cosmological dark matter. A subsequent conjecture concerning galactic dark matter follows.

Radiation Driven Inflation

A novel scalar field free approach to cosmic inflation is presented. The inflationary Universe and the radiation dominated Universe are shown, within the framework of unified brane cosmology, to be two different phases governed by one and the same energy density. The phase transition of second order (the Hubble constant exhibits a finite jump) appears naturally and serves as the exit mechanism. No re-heating is needed. The required number of e-folds is achieved without fine tuning.

SU(5) grand unification on a domain-wall brane from an E_6-invariant action

An SU(5) grand unification scheme for effective 3+1-dimensional fields dynamically localised on a domain-wall brane is constructed. This is achieved through the confluence of the clash-of-symmetries mechanism for symmetry breaking through domain-wall formation, and the Dvali-Shifman gauge-boson localisation idea. It requires an E_6 gauge-invariant action, yielding a domain-wall solution that has E_6 broken to differently embedded SO(10) x U(1) subgroups in the two bulk regions on opposite sides of the wall. On the wall itself, the unbroken symmetry is the intersection of the two bulk subgroups, and contains SU(5). A 4+1-dimensional fermion family in the 27 of E_6 gives rise to localised left-handed zero-modes in the 5^* + 10 + 1 + 1 representation of SU(5). The remaining ten fermion components of the 27 are delocalised exotic states, not appearing in the effective 3+1-dimensional theory on the domain-wall brane. The scheme is compatible with the type-2 Randall-Sundrum mechanism for graviton localisation; the single extra dimension is infinite.

Dirac Relaxation of the Israel Junction Conditions: Unified Randall-Sundrum Brane Theory

Following Dirac's brane variation prescription, the brane must not be deformed during the variation process, or else the linearity of the variation may be lost. Alternatively, the variation of the brane is done, in a special Dirac frame, by varying the bulk coordinate system itself. Imposing appropriate Dirac style boundary conditions on the constrained 'sandwiched' gravitational action, we show how Israel junction conditions get relaxed, but remarkably, all solutions of the original Israel equations are still respected. The Israel junction conditions are traded, in the $Z_2$-symmetric case, for a generalized Regge-Teitelboim type equation (plus a local conservation law), and in the generic $Z_2$-asymmetric case, for a pair of coupled Regge-Teitelboim equations. The Randall-Sundrum model and its derivatives, such as the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati and the Collins-Holdom models, get generalized accordingly. Furthermore, Randall-Sundrum and Regge-Teitelboim brane theories appear now to be two different faces of the one and the same unified brane theory. Within the framework of unified brane cosmology, we examine the dark matter/energy interpretation of the effective energy/momentum deviations from General Relativity.

Spontaneously Induced Gravity: From Rippled Dark Matter to Einstein Corpuscles

Suppose General Relativity, provocatively governed by a dimensional coupling constant, is a spontaneously induced theory of Gravity. Invoking Zee's mechanism, we represent the reciprocal Newton constant by a Brans Dicke scalar field, and let it damped oscillating towards its General Relativistic VEV. The corresponding cosmological evolution, in the Jordan frame, averagely resembles the familiar dark radiation -> dark matter -> dark energy domination sequence. The fingerprints of the theory are fine ripples, hopefully testable, in the FRW scale factor; they die away at the strict General Relativity limit. Also derived is the spherically symmetric static configuration associated with spontaneously induced General Relativity. At the stiff scalar potential limit, the exterior Schwarzschild solution is recovered. However, due to level crossing at the would have been horizon, it now connects with a novel dark core characterized by a locally varying Newton constant. The theory further predicts light Einstein-style gravitational corpuscles (elementary particles?) which become point-like at the GR-limit.

Geodesic Nucleation and Evolution of a de Sitter Brane

Within the framework of Geodesic Brane Gravity, the deviation from General Relativity is parameterized by the conserved bulk energy. The corresponding geodesic evolution/nucleation of a de-Sitter brane is shown to be exclusively driven by a double-well Higgs potential, rather than by a plain cosmological constant. The (hairy) horizon serves then as the locus of unbroken $Z_{2}$ symmetry. The quartic structure of the scalar potential, singled out on finiteness grounds of the total (including the dark component) energy density, chooses the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal.

The clash of symmetries in a Randall-Sundrum-like spacetime

We present a toy model that exhibits clash-of-symmetries style Higgs field kink configurations in a Randall-Sundrum-like spacetime. The model has two complex scalar fields Phi_{1,2}, with a sextic potential obeying global U(1)xU(1) and discrete Phi_1 <--> Phi_2 interchange symmetries. The scalar fields are coupled to 4+1 dimensional gravity endowed with a bulk cosmological constant. We show that the coupled Einstein-Higgs field equations have an interesting analytic solution provided the sextic potential adopts a particular form. The 4+1 metric is shown to be that of a smoothed-out Randall-Sundrum type of spacetime. The thin-brane Randall-Sundrum limit, whereby the Higgs field kinks become step functions, is carefully defined in terms of the fundamental parameters in the action. The ``clash of symmetries'' feature, defined in previous papers, is manifested here through the fact that both of the U(1) symmetries are spontaneously broken at all non-asymptotic points in the extra dimension $w$. One of the U(1)'s is asymptotically restored as w --> -infinity, with the other U(1) restored as w --> +infinity. The spontaneously broken discrete symmetry ensures topological stability. In the gauged version of this model we find new flat-space solutions, but in the warped metric case we have been unable to find any solutions with nonzero gauge fields.

Dirac Quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck Fourth Order Oscillator

As a model, the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator with equation of motion $d^4q/dt^4+(ω_1^2+ω_2^2)d^2q/dt^2 +ω_1^2ω_2^2 q=0$ is a quantum-mechanical prototype of a field theory containing both second and fourth order derivative terms. With its dynamical degrees of freedom obeying constraints due to the presence of higher order time derivatives, the model cannot be quantized canonically. We thus quantize it using the method of Dirac constraints to construct the correct quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian for the system, and find that the Hamiltonian diagonalizes in the positive and negative norm states that are characteristic of higher derivative field theories. However, we also find that the oscillator commutation relations become singular in the $ω_1 \to ω_2$ limit, a limit which corresponds to a prototype of a pure fourth order theory. Thus the particle content of the $ω_1 =ω_2$ theory cannot be inferred from that of the $ω_1 \neq ω_2$ theory; and in fact in the $ω_1 \to ω_2$ limit we find that all of the $ω_1 \neq ω_2$ negative norm states move off shell, with the spectrum of asymptotic in and out states of the equal frequency theory being found to be completely devoid of states with either negative energy or negative norm. As a byproduct of our work we find a Pais-Uhlenbeck analog of the zero energy theorem of Boulware, Horowitz and Strominger, and show how in the equal frequency Pais-Uhlenbeck theory the theorem can be transformed into a positive energy theorem instead.

Rippled Cosmological Dark Matter from Damped Oscillating Newton Constant

Let the reciprocal Newton 'constant' be an apparently non-dynamical Brans-Dicke scalar field damped oscillating towards its General Relativistic VEV. We show, without introducing additional matter fields or dust, that the corresponding cosmological evolution averagely resembles, in the Jordan frame, the familiar dark radiation -> dark matter -> dark energy domination sequence. The fingerprints of our theory are fine ripples, hopefully testable, in the FRW scale factor; they die away at the General Relativity limit. The possibility that the Brans-Dicke scalar also serves as the inflaton is favorably examined.
