An Accurate Analytic Model for Traveling Wave Tube Dispersion Relation

Abstract -- We construct an analytical model for the dispersion of the hot modes in a traveling wave tube (TWT) based on the Lagrangian field theory, upgrading its constants to be frequency-dependent. The frequency dependence of the parameters of the TWT slow wave structure (SWS) is recovered from full-wave simulations by standard software (e.g., CST). We applied the model to study the hot modes of a helical-based TWT and found an excellent agreement between the results from our model and those from particle in cell (PIC) simulations. Our additional studies show that the proposed approach can be applied to various SWS geometries.

Experimental Demonstration of a New Oscillator Concept Based on Degenerate Band Edge in Microstrip Circuit

The first experimental demonstration of an oscillator based on a periodic, resonant microstrip circuit with a degenerate band edge (DBE) is presented. The DBE is a fourth-order exceptional degeneracy of the eigenmodes in a lossless periodic waveguide that is visible in the wavenumber-frequency dispersion diagram, and the periodic microstrip behaves as a frequency selective medium. The presence of the DBE condition and the associated DBE resonance allow for a stable, single-mode oscillation as well as stability with varying the load resistance.

Exceptional Degeneracy in a Waveguide Periodically Loaded with Discrete Gain and Radiation Loss Elements

We demonstrate that a periodic waveguide comprising of uniform lossless segments together with discrete gain and radiating elements supports exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). We provide analytical expressions for all possible conditions that guarantee the occurrence of an EPD, i.e., the coalescence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We show that EPDs are not only achieved using symmetric gain and radiation periodic loading, but they are also obtained using asymmetric gain and radiation loss conditions. We illustrate the characteristics of the degenerate electromagnetic modes, showing the dispersion diagram and discussing the tunability of the EPD frequency. We show a special condition, we refer to it as parity-time (PT)-glide symmetry, which leads to a degeneracy that is occurring at all frequencies of operation. The class of EPDs proposed in this work is very promising for many applications that incorporate discrete-distributed coherent sources and radiation-loss elements; operating in the vicinity of such special degeneracy conditions leads to potential performance enhancement in a variety of microwave and optical resonators, antennas, and devices and can be extended to a new class of active integrated antenna arrays and radiating laser arrays.

High Power Backward Wave Oscillator using Folded Waveguide with Distributed Power Extraction Operating at an Exceptional Point

The concept of exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is used to conceive a degenerate synchronization regime that is able to enhance the level of output power and power conversion efficiency for backward wave oscillators (BWOs) operating at millimeter-wave and Terahertz frequencies. Standard BWOs operating at such high frequency ranges typically generate output power not exceeding tens of watts with very poor power conversion efficiency in the order of 1%. The novel concept of degenerate synchronization for the BWO based on a folded waveguide is implemented by engineering distributed gain and power extraction along the slow-wave waveguide. The distributed power extraction along the folded waveguide is useful to satisfy the necessary conditions to have an EPD at the synchronization point. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results shows that BWO operating at an EPD regime is capable of generating output power exceeding 3 kwatts with conversion efficiency of exceeding 20% at frequency of 88.5 GHz.

Exceptional Degeneracies in Traveling Wave Tubes with Dispersive Slow-Wave Structure Including Space-Charge Effect

The interaction between a linear electron beam and a guided electromagnetic wave is studied in the contest of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) supported by such an interactive system. The study focuses on the case of a linear beam traveling wave tube (TWT) with a realistic helix waveguide slow-wave structure (SWS). The interaction is formulated by an analytical model that is a generalization of the Pierce model, assuming a one-dimensional electron flow along a dispersive single-mode guiding SWS and taking into account space-charge effects in the system. The augmented model using phase velocity and characteristic impedance obtained via full-wave simulations is validated by calculating gain versus frequency and comparing it with that from more complex electron beam simulators. This comparison also shows the accuracy of our new model compared with respect to the non-dispersive Pierce model. EPDs are then investigated using the augmented model, observing the coalescence of complex-valued wavenumbers and the system's eigenvectors. The point in the complex dispersion diagram at which the TWT-system starts/ceases to exhibit a convection instability, i.e., a mode starts/ceases to grow exponentially along the TWT, is the EPD. We also demonstrate the EPD existence by showing that the Puiseux fractional power series expansion well approximates the bifurcation of the dispersion diagram at the EPD. This latter concept also explains the "exceptional" sensitivity of the TWT-system to changes in the beam's electron velocity when operating near an EPD.

Exceptional Point of Degeneracy in Linear-Beam Tubes for High Power Backward-Wave Oscillators

Abstract An exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is induced in a system made of an electron beam interacting with an electromagnetic (EM) guided mode. This enables a degenerate synchronous regime in backward wave oscillators (BWOs) where the electron beams provides distributed gain to the EM mode with distributed power extraction. Current particle-in-cell simulation results demonstrate that BWOs operating at an EPD have a starting-oscillation current that scales quadratically to a non-vanishing value for long interaction lengths and therefore have higher power conversion efficiency at arbitrarily higher level of power generation compared to standard BWOs.

Distributed Degenerate Band Edge Oscillator

We propose a new class of oscillators by engineering the dispersion of two-coupled periodic waveguides to exhibit a degenerate band edge (DBE). The DBE is an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) of order four, i.e., representing the coalescence of four eigenmodes of a waveguide system without loss and gain. We present a distributed DBE oscillator realized in periodic coupled transmission lines with a unique mode selection scheme that leads to a stable single-frequency oscillation, even in the presence of load variation. The DBE oscillator potentially leads to a boost of the efficiency and performance of RF sources, thanks to the unique features associated to the EPD concept. This class of oscillators is promising for improving discrete-distributed coherent sources and can be extended to radiating structures to achieve a new class of active integrated antenna arrays.

Exceptional Point of Degeneracy in Backward-Wave Oscillator with Distributed Power Extraction

We show how an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) is formed in a system composed of an electron beam interacting with an electromagnetic mode guided in a slow wave structure (SWS) with distributed power extraction from the interaction zone. Based on this kind of EPD, a new regime of operation is devised for backward wave oscillators (BWOs) as a synchronous and degenerate regime between a backward electromagnetic mode and the charge wave modulating the electron beam. Degenerate synchronization under this EPD condition means that two complex modes of the interactive system do not share just the wavenumber, but they rather coalesce in both their wavenumbers and eigenvectors (polarization states). In principle this new condition guarantees full synchronization between the electromagnetic wave and the beam's charge wave for any amount of output power extracted from the beam, setting the threshold of this EPD-BWO to any arbitrary, desired, value. Indeed, we show that the presence of distributed radiation in the SWS results in having high-threshold electron-beam current to start oscillations which implies higher power generation. These findings have the potential to lead to highly efficient BWOs with very high output power and excellent spectral purity.

Exceptional Points of Degeneracy in Periodic Coupled Waveguides and the Interplay of Gain and Radiation Loss: Theoretical and Experimental Demonstration

We present a novel paradigm for dispersion engineering in coupled transmission lines (CTLs) based on exceptional points of degeneracy (EPDs). We develop a theory for fourth-order EPDs consisting of four Floquet-Bloch eigenmodes coalescing into one degenerate eigenmode. We present unique wave propagation properties associated to the EPD and develop a figure of merit to assess the practical occurrence of fourth-order EPDs in CTLs with tolerances and losses. We experimentally verify for the first time the existence of a fourth EPD (the degenerate band edge), through dispersion and transmission measurements in microstrip-based CTLs at microwave frequencies. In addition, we report that based on experimental observation and the developed figure of merit, the EPD features are still observable in structures that radiate (leak energy away), even in the presence of fabrication tolerances and dissipative losses. We investigate the gain and loss balance regime in CTLs as a mean of recovering an EPD in the presence of radiation and/or dissipative losses, without necessarily resorting to Parity-Time (PT)-symmetry regimes. The versatile EPD concept is promising in applications such as high intensity and power-efficiency oscillators, spatial power combiners, or low-threshold oscillators and opens new frontiers for boosting the performance of large coherent sources.

Exceptional Points of Degeneracy Induced by Linear Time-Periodic Variation Hamidreza

We present a general theory of exceptional points of degeneracy (EPD) in periodically time-variant systems that do not necessarily require the presence of loss or gain, and we show that even a single resonator with a time-periodic component may develop EPDs. An EPD is a special point in a system parameter space at which two or more eigenmodes coalesce in both their eigenvalues and eigenvectors into a single degenerate eigenmode. We demonstrate the conditions for EPDs to exist in time-periodic systems that are either lossless/gainless or with loss and/or gain and we show that a system with zero time-average loss/gain exhibits EPDs with purely real resonance frequencies, yet the resonator energy grows algebraically in time. We show the occurrence of EPDs in a single LC resonator while the introduced concept is general for any time-periodic system. These findings have significant importance in various electromagnetic/photonic systems and pave the way of applications in areas of sensors, amplifiers and modulators. A potential application of this time varying EPD is highlighted as a highly-sensitive sensor.
