A Multi-Objective Learning Approach for Adaptive Waveform Selection in Integrated Sensing and Communications Systems

Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) has emerged as a key enabler for sixth generation (6G) wireless systems by jointly supporting data transmission and environmental awareness within a unified framework. However, communication and sensing functionalities impose inherently conflicting performance requirements, particularly in heterogeneous networks where users may demand sensing only, communication only, or joint services. Selecting a waveform that satisfies diverse service demands therefore becomes a challenging multi objective decision problem. In this paper, a multi objective learning approach for adaptive waveform selection in ISAC systems is proposed. A simulation driven evaluation framework is developed to assess multiple waveform candidates across communication, sensing, and joint performance metrics. Instead of enforcing scalar utility aggregation, waveform performance is represented in a multi dimensional objective space where Pareto optimal candidates are identified for each scenario. A dataset is generated by varying user demand distributions and channel conditions, and multi-label targets are constructed based on Pareto dominance. Machine learning models are trained to learn the mapping between network conditions and Pareto optimal waveform sets, enabling fast waveform selection under dynamic network states. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework effectively adapts waveform selection to heterogeneous service requirements while preserving sensing communication trade offs, providing a forward-looking perspective for 6G and beyond ISAC deployments.

6G Vision: An Ultra-Flexible Perspective

The upcoming sixth generation (6G) communications systems are expected to support an unprecedented variety of applications, pervading every aspect of human life. It is clearly not possible to fulfill the service requirements without actualizing a plethora of flexible options pertaining to the key enabler technologies themselves. At that point, this work presents an overview of the potential 6G key enablers from the flexibility perspective, categorizes them, and provides a general framework to incorporate them in the future networks. Furthermore, the role of artificial intelligence and integrated sensing and communications as key enablers of the presented framework is also discussed.

Fundamentals of Multi-Numerology 5G New Radio

The physical layer of 5G cellular communications systems is designed to achieve better flexibility in an effort to support diverse services and user requirements. OFDM waveform parameters are enriched with flexible multi-numerology structures. This paper describes the differences between Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems and new radio (NR) from the flexibility perspective. Research opportunities for multi-numerology systems are presented in a structured manner. Finally, inter-numerology interference (INI) results as a function of guard allocation and multi-numerology parameters are obtained through simulation.

Fairness-Aware Scheduling in Multi-Numerology Based 5G New Radio

Multi-numerology waveform based 5G New Radio (NR) systems offer great flexibility for different requirements of users and services. Providing fairness between users is not an easy task due to inter-numerology interference (INI) between multiple numerologies. This paper proposes two novel scheduling algorithms to provide fairness for all users, especially at the edges of numerologies. Signal-to-noise ratio (SIR) results for multi-numerology systems are obtained through computer simulations.

Selection of Waveform Parameters Using Machine Learning for 5G and Beyond

Flexibility is one of the essential requirements in future cellular communications technologies. Providing customized communications solutions for each user and service type cannot be possible without the flexibility in 5G and beyond. Different optimizations need to be done for the flexibility related structures of 5G and beyond systems. In this paper, a novel machine learning (ML) based selection mechanism for the configurable waveform parameters is designed from the flexibility perspective. Moreover, a simulation based dataset generation methodology is proposed for ML systems. Results of computer simulations are presented using the generated dataset.

Inter-Numerology Interference Analysis for 5G and Beyond

One of the defining characteristics of 5G is the flexibility it offers for supporting different services and communication scenarios. For this purpose, usage of multiple numerologies has been proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The flexibility provided by multi-numerology system comes at the cost of additional interference, known as inter-numerology interference (INI). This paper comprehensively explains the primary cause of INI, and then identifies and describes the factors affecting the amount of INI experienced by each numerology in the system. These factors include subcarrier spacing, number of used subcarriers, power offset, windowing operations and guard bands.
