Electronic Structure of UTe$_2$ Studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ was studied by resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The partial $\mathrm{U}~5f$ density of states of UTe$_2$ were imaged by the $\mathrm{U}~4d$--$5f$ RPES and it was found that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ state has an itinerant character, but there exists an incoherent peak due to the strong electron correlation effects. Furthermore, an anomalous admixture of the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states into the $\mathrm{Te}~5p$ bands was observed at a higher binding energy, which cannot be explained by band structure calculations. On the other hand, the band structure of UTe$_2$ was obtained by ARPES and its overall band structure were mostly explained by band structure calculations. These results suggest that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states of UTe$_2$ have itinerant but strongly-correlated nature with enhanced hybridization with the $\mathrm{Te}~5p$ states.

125Te-NMR Study on a Single Crystal of Heavy Fermion Superconductor UTe2

We report 125Te-NMR studies on a newly discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2. Using a single crystal, we have measured the 125Te-NMR Knight shift K and spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 for fields along the three orthorhombic crystal axes. The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (K) and dynamical susceptibilities (1/T1) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T2, when the field is applied along the easy axis of magnetization (=a axis). This behavior suggests the development of longitudinal magnetic fluctuations along the a axis at very low frequencies below 20 K.

Metamagnetic Transition in Heavy Fermion Superconductor UTe2

We have studied the magnetization of the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ up to 56 T in pulsed-magnetic fields. A first-order metamagnetic transition has been clearly observed at $H_{\rm m}$ =34.9 T when the magnetic field $H$ is applied along the orthorhombic hard-magnetization $b$-axis. The transition has a critical end point at $\sim$11 K and 34.8 T, where the first order transition terminates and changes into a crossover regime. Using the thermodynamic Maxwell relation, we have evaluated the field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat directly related to the superconducting pairing. From the analysis, we found a significant enhancement of the effective mass centered at $H_{\rm m}$, which is reminiscent of the field-reentrant superconductivity of the ferromagnet URhGe in transverse fields. We discuss the origin of their field-robust superconductivity.

Unconventional Superconductivity in Heavy Fermion UTe2

We grew single crystals of the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2, and measured the resistivity, specific heat and magnetoresistance. Superconductivity (SC) was clearly detected at Tsc=1.65K as sharp drop of the resistivity in a high quality sample of RRR=35. The specific heat shows a large jump at Tsc indicating strong coupling. The large Sommerfeld coefficient, 117mJ K-2mol-1 extrapolated in the normal state and the temperature dependence of C/T below Tsc are the signature of unconventional SC. The discrepancy in the entropy balance at Tsc between SC and normal states points out that hidden features must occur. Surprisingly, a large residual value of the Sommerfeld coefficient seems quite robust (gamma_0/gamma ~ 0.5). The large upper critical field Hc2 along the three principal axes favors spin-triplet SC. For H // b-axis, our experiments do not reproduce the huge upturn of Hc2 reported previously. This discrepancy may reflect that Hc2 is very sensitive to the sample quality. A new perspective in UTe2 is the proximity of a Kondo semiconducting phase predicted by the LDA band structure calculations.

Magnetic field effect on the chiral magnetism of noncentrosymmetric UPtGe: experiment and theory

The effect of differently oriented magnetic field on chiral incommensurate helimagnet UPtGe is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The magnetization measurements up to the field above the saturation have revealed an isotropic magnetic response below 20 T and a remarkable nonmonotonic anisotropy in high fields. Moreover, the two principally different phase transitions from the noncollinear incommensurate to the field-induced ferromagnetic state have been observed. These properties are successfully explained by density-functional theory calculations taking into account the noncollinearity of the magnetic structures, arbitrary directed magnetic field, and relativistic effects. We also estimate the strength of different competing magnetic interactions and discuss possible scenarios of the field-induced phase transformations.

Microscopic Observation of Heavy Quasiparticle Formation in the Intermediate Valence Compound EuNi$_2$P$_2$: $^{31}$P NMR Study

We report $^{31}$P NMR measurements under various magnetic fields up to 7 T for the intermediate valence compound EuNi$_2$P$_2$, which shows heavy electronic states at low temperatures. In the high-temperature region above 40 K, the Knight shift followed the Curie--Weiss law reflecting localized $4f$ states. In addition, the behavior corresponding to the temperature variation of the average valence of Eu was observed in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. With the occurrence of the Kondo effect, $1/T_1$ was clearly reduced below 40 K, and the Knight shift becomes almost constant at low temperatures. From these results, the formation of heavy quasiparticles by the hybridization of Eu $4f$ electrons and conduction electrons was clarified from microscopic viewpoints. Furthermore, a characteristic spin fluctuation was observed at low temperatures, which would be associated with valence fluctuations caused by the intermediate valence state of EuNi$_2$P$_2$.

Splitting Fermi Surfaces and Heavy Electronic States in Non-Centrosymmetric U3Ni3Sn4

We report the single-crystal growth of the non-centrosymmetric paramagnet U3Ni3Sn4 by the Bridgman method and the Fermi surface properties detected by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiments. We have also investigated single-crystal U3Ni3Sn4 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies reveals many closed Fermi surfaces, which are nearly spherical in topology. The experimental results are in good agreement with local density approximation (LDA) band structure calculations based on the 5f-itinerant model. The band structure calculation predicts many Fermi surfaces, mostly with spherical shape, derived from 12 bands crossing the Fermi energy. To our knowledge, the splitting of Fermi surfaces due to the non-centrosymmetric crystal in 5f-electron systems is experimentally detected for the first time. The temperature dependence of the dHvA amplitude reveals a large cyclotron effective mass of up to 35m0, indicating the heavy electronic state of U3Ni3Sn4 due to the proximity of the quantum critical point. From the field dependence of the dHvA amplitude, a mean free path of conduction electrons of up to 1950A is detected, reflecting the good quality of the grown crystal. The small splitting energy related to the antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction is most likely due to the large cyclotron effective mass.

Consecutive magnetic phase diagram of UCoGe-URhGe-UIrGe system

We prepared single crystals in UCo1-xRhxGe and UIr1-xRhxGe systems to establish a complex dU-U-T (dU-U is the shortest interatomic uranium distance and T is temperature) magnetic phase diagram. This recognized a characteristic maximum in magnetic susceptibility at temperature Tmax along the b axis as an important parameter. Three magnetically ordered regions can be distinguished within this scope; first a ferromagnetic region with Curie temperature < Tmax, second a ferromagnetic region with Curie temperature = Tmax and finally an antiferromagnetic region existing on the UIrGe side with Néel temperature < Tmax.

Dimensionality driven enhancement of ferromagnetic superconductivity in URhGe

In most unconventional superconductors, like the high-Tc cuprates, iron pnictides, or heavy fermion systems, superconductivity emerges in the proximity of an electronic instability. Identifying unambiguously the pairing mechanism remains nevertheless an enormous challenge. Among these systems, the orthorhombic uranium ferromagnetic superconductors have a unique position, notably because magnetic fields couple directly to ferromagnetic order, leading to the fascinating discovery of the re-emergence of superconductivity in URhGe at high field. Here we show that uniaxial stress is a remarkable tool allowing fine-tuning of the pairing strength. With a relatively small stress, the superconducting phase diagram is spectacularly modified, with a merging of the low and high field superconducting states and a significant enhancement of superconductivity. The superconducting critical temperature increases both at zero field and under field, reaching 1K, more than twice higher than at ambient pressure. The enhancement of superconductivity is directly related to a change of the magnetic dimensionality with an increase of the transverse magnetic susceptibility, demonstrating that in addition to the Ising-type longitudinal ferromagnetic fluctuations, transverse magnetic fluctuations also play an important role in the superconducting pairing.

Quasiparticle Excitations and Evidence for Superconducting Double Transitions in Monocrystalline U0.97Th0.03Be13

Superconducting (SC) gap symmetry and magnetic response of cubic U0.97Th0.03Be13 are studied by means of high-precision heat-capacity and dc magnetization measurements using a single crystal, in order to address the long-standing question of its second phase transition at Tc2 in the SC state below Tc1. The absence (presence) of an anomaly at Tc2 in the field-cooling (zero-field-cooling) magnetization indicates that this transition is between two different SC states. There is a qualitative difference in the field variation of the transition temperatures; Tc2(H) is isotropic whereas Tc1(H) exhibits a weak anisotropy between [001] and [111] directions. In the low temperature phase below Tc2(H), the angle-resolved heat-capacity $C(T,H, ϕ)$ reveals that the gap is fully opened over the Fermi surface, narrowing down the possible gap symmetry.

Switching of magnetic ground states across the UIr1-xRhxGe alloy system

We investigated the evolution of magnetism in the UIr1-xRhxGe system by the systematic study of high-quality single crystals. Lattice parameters of both parent compounds are very similar resulting in almost identical nearest interatomic uranium distance close to the Hill limit. We established the x-T phase diagram of the UIr1-xRhxGe system and found a discontinuous antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic boundary at xcrit = 0.56 where a local minimum in ordering temperature and maximum of the Sommerfeld coefficient 175 mJ/mol K2 occurs in the UCoGe-URhGe-UIrGe system, signaling an increase in magnetic fluctuations. However, a quantum critical point is not realized because of the finite ordering temperature at xcrit. A magnon gap on the antiferromagnetic side abruptly suppresses magnetic fluctuations. We find a field-induced first order transition in the vicinity of the critical magnetic field along the b axis in the entire UIr1-xRhxGe system including the ferromagnetic region UCo0.6Rh0.4Ge - URhGe.

Magnetic structure of divalent europium compound EuGa$_4$ studied by single crystal time-of-flight neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa$_4$ was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. In spite of high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections were appeared at the positions with the diffraction indices of $h+k+l{\neq}2n$ below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is ${\bf q}=(0~0~0)$. Continuous evolution of magnetic reflection intensity below $T_{\rm N}$ follows a squared Brillouin function for $S$=7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa$_4$ was revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4$~μ_{\rm B}$ of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice. The present study reveals a well-localized divalent Eu magnetism in EuGa$_4$ and demonstrates a high ability of SENJU to investigate materials with high neutron absorption.

Large Upper Critical Field of Superconductivity in the Single Crystal U6Co

We grew single crystals of U6Co by the self-flux method and measured the magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat. The magnetic susceptibility shows very small anisotropy and weak temperature dependence, indicating small spin-susceptibility. Superconductivity was clearly observed in the resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat at Tc~2.3K. The upper critical field was remarkably large, 7.9 and 6.6T for H || [001] and [110], respectively, in the tetragonal structure, indicating that the ellipsoidal Fermi surface is slightly suppressed along the [001] direction according to the effective mass model. The specific heat shows a large jump at Tc with Delta C/gamma Tc = 1.58, and the field dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures shows an almost linear increase. These experimental results are well explained by the BCS model in the dirty limit condition. U6Co is most likely a conventional s-wave superconductor with a full superconducting gap.
